When We Keep Learning, We Keep Belonging
In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an advisory declaring loneliness a public health epidemic. The health risks, the report explained, are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. For older adults, social connections can be inherently harder to come by due to living situations, mobility and health issues, and transportation access.
The danger isn’t in aging itself, but in the disconnection that accompanies loneliness. And while many older adults may not identify as lonely, disconnection often starts with a lack of structure, stimulation, or meaningful interaction with others.
Many organizations offer programs as powerful alternatives to the threat
of disconnection and loneliness. At Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO), through courses, creativity, and a peer-led structure, members stay mentally active and find a sense of belonging. To see it in action, we asked three members to share their stories.
Following Curiosity, Finding Purpose
Barb Drake, a retired high school principal, found PLATO after the pandemic. With time on her hands and a desire for something new, she sought enriching opportunities that were thought-provoking and not easily done alone. One of those activities was PLATO’s social justice course. “I would never have read the books I’ve read, except for being in these classes,” she
says. “I would have looked at them and thought, ‘That’s way too deep for me.’ But in the end, you read and you learn, and you expand your whole concept of the world.”
Barb hadn’t expected a class to push her beyond the page, but it did. The readings and discussions prompted her to get involved in her community in new ways, including canvassing. The experience changed her view of what she was capable of and what issues really mattered to people.
Listening to community members share their concerns shifted how Barb saw her own role in the community. “Sometimes, older people sell themselves short,” she says. “But they have a lot of
power.” More than just learning, it was an opportunity for Barb to engage with her world in a deeper, more connected way.
Writing a New Chapter Like Barb, Tom Sieger wasn’t ready to slow down after retiring from a career in public health. A former co-worker led him to PLATO, where he found a writing workshop that offered the structure and support he needed to bring a dream to life.
For years, Tom had a budding idea to write about Wisconsin’s Driftless Area and the family dairy farms that shaped his childhood summers. With steady encouragement and thoughtful feedback from fellow workshop members, he published a novella: Elegy
to Woodstock Wisconsin and the Decline of the Family Dairy Farm
“The fellow writers added so much value and improved upon my writing,” he says. “We’ve gotten to the point where we look forward to chatting and catching up with each other and discussing what’s going on.” And even though the workshop was virtual, it didn’t lessen the connection. In fact, it kept people engaged. One writer even joined regularly from Alabama.
Harkening back to his public health days, Tom says, “We used to say that one of the most important predictors of good health in your later life are your social connections.” The writing matters, but it’s the relationships that keep him coming back.
Showing Up for Each Other
A sense of belonging is the greatest strength in a volunteer-powered model. Members volunteer their time and talents, leading every course, lecture, and event. Tim Otis knows this is key to a program’s value and impact. A decades-long member, Tim has served as board president, taught courses, and helped shape PLATO’s member-led structure.
Tim has seen firsthand how powerful it is when people give back and how meaningful it is to be part of a community where everyone plays a role. “What makes people want to get involved?” he asks. “If they feel like what they’re doing is making a difference.” Contribution becomes connection, and connection, in turn, becomes community.
An Antidote to Loneliness
Loneliness may be a modern epidemic, but these stories are examples of resistance—of belonging. They remind us that when people learn and create together and serve one another, disconnection doesn’t stand a chance.

Aging with Confidence THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING
Aging is a natural part of life, but how we think about it can have a deep effect on wellness as we age. Positive thinking about aging is not just optimism, it’s a powerful tool that promotes physical health, emotional well-being, and even longevity. Research by Becca Levy, PhD, at the Yale School of Public Health shows that people with positive perceptions of growing older live an average of seven and a half years longer than those with negative attitudes. To fully embrace aging, we must also address ageism: widespread stereotypes based on age.
Ageism is often subtle. You might notice it in assumptions that older people can’t learn technology, jokes about memory loss or incontinence, even the idea that there’s greater value in youth. According to Ann Albert, executive director of AgeBetter, Inc., over time, these messages can become internalized and shape how we see ourselves.
“We know that ageism can have a negative impact on health and emotional well-being, including problems with anxiety, depression, and lost confidence in our abilities as we grow older,” says
Ann. “Challenging stereotypes and our own beliefs about aging can help break the cycle.”
That starts with recognizing and addressing ageist attitudes with kindness and an intention to enlighten rather than shame. Ann says, “Gently reminding people about all the great things about growing older can diffuse negative comments about aging. We can all be positive influences and role models who are aging with vitality. We’re full of wisdom and resilience and so much to share with others.”
Ann encourages people to think about aging as a progression rather than as a decline and to stay curious, pursue new goals, and maintain social and mental engagement.
When we shift our mindset and push back against ageism, we don’t just improve our own experiences, we help reshape cultural attitudes. We really can flip the script on aging.

The BEAT GOES ON...
by Kelly Cheramy
There were many reasons that a new wellness class offered by Attic Angel caught Mary Webster’s attention, from heartbeats to drumbeats and music to amusement.
Initially, Mary’s intrigue with cardio drumming centered on the benefits she could achieve by getting her heart going, even while seated. The lively music and entertaining class leaders
make the class a joy to experience. “It’s great fun,” says Mary, a 10-year resident of Prairie Point and an Angel from the class of 1978.
But there’s one thing that makes the class extra special: Mary keeps the beat with the drumsticks from her husband’s childhood toy drum. Dating back to about 1930, the wooden drum became part of Mary’s life when she married
Chuck Webster, in 1975, nearly 50 years ago. The couple treasured their roots as much as their adventures together, and the drum is on display with artifacts from their travels around the world.
Chuck, who can be seen in the wall photos as a somewhat accidental model for American Breeders Service (now ABS Global) magazine, passed away in 2013. Mary’s heart still seems to skip a
beat when she talks about the love of her life.
Some might think using Chuck’s drumsticks for a wellness class is of no consequence, but for Mary, it’s a way to extend their marriage even after his death. “I like the closeness of being with him,” she says. In other words, it’s a way for the beat to go on.
Kelly Cheramy, now retired, was the outreach coordinator for Attic Angel Community.

Living Better with Serious Illness How Palliative Care Can Help
by Dr. Hilary Bingol
Is someone you love living with a serious illness? Daily challenges can feel overwhelming—for them and you. Whether it’s a parent, spouse, sibling, or friend, it’s hard to know how to support them as they struggle with pain, fatigue or emotional distress, side effects of their treatment, or similar symptoms. Fortunately, there’s a way to help them feel and cope better, no matter how long they’ve lived with the illness.
What’s Palliative Care?
Palliative care is a medical specialty that focuses on relieving the symptoms and stress of serious, life-limiting illnesses. Although the patient’s comfort and quality of life are key goals, palliative care is not the same as hospice care or home health. It’s a consultation service available at any stage of a life-limiting illness, including while people continue to receive aggressive or curative treatment for their illness.
Who Can Benefit?
Palliative care is ideal for people struggling with cancer, heart or lung disease, kidney or liver failure, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, MS, stroke, or similar conditions. It can be especially helpful when:
• symptoms are not well controlled and interfere with daily life.
• medications are not effective enough and may need fine-tuning.
• an illness causes frequent ER visits or hospitalizations.
• the illness makes it hard to get to medical appointments.
• it’s unclear what to expect as the illness progresses.
Bob’s Turning Point: Palliative Care for a Surprising Diagnosis
Just months from retiring from his trucking career, Bob developed breathing trouble. He assumed it was asthma, but tests soon revealed an uncommon and more serious diagnosis: an aggressive form of ALS affecting his
diaphragm muscle and breathing. It became too difficult for Bob to work as his breathing symptoms limited how active he could be.
Bob had many questions about how to cope as his illness progressed. His wife knew about Agrace Hospice Care, but he was expected to live much longer than six months, the usual starting point for end-of-life care. Instead, Bob turned to Agrace for a palliative care consultation, which is available at any point during a serious illness.
Nicole, an Agrace Palliative Care nurse practitioner, visited Bob at his home to talk about how he was getting along: symptoms, medications, and what was important to him in day-to-day living. She learned that he wanted to be able to go to his grandkids’ soccer matches and do as much of his own personal care as possible, even though it exhausted him. He preferred not to have certain treatments that would leave him unable to do those things.
Nicole considered ways to help Bob meet his goals, and she shared ideas with Bob and his wife as well as Bob’s doctor and the specialists who were treating him. With this background, the whole medical team could work together to support him.
Knowing Bob’s symptoms and care needs would change over time, Nicole made follow-up visits once a month. They talked about the progress of the illness as well as Bob’s treatment options and preferences for care as the ALS progressed. Nicole shared her visit summaries and ideas with Bob’s doctors, who would direct any changes to his care.
Bob and his wife also talked with Nicole about what the future could be like with his illness and how treatments aligned with his goals. Agrace Palliative Care became a trusted resource to
help him feel and cope better with his unexpected illness.
Could In-Home Palliative Care Help Your Loved One?
Agrace Palliative Care consultations are for adult patients being treated for serious, life-altering illnesses who are struggling to manage their symptoms or side effects of treatment. They may help people who:
• have lingering discomfort even after trying several standard treatments.
• have troubling behaviors related to dementia.
• need help with the emotional challenges of their illness.
• would benefit from discussing what’s important to them and future treatment options.
Living with a serious illness shouldn’t mean living without comfort or without a plan. Consultations and follow-up visits from Agrace are available across southern Wisconsin and are covered by Medicare and most private insurance providers (there may be a co-pay).
Dr. Hilary Bingol is vice president of medical services at Agrace. To learn more, contact Agrace at (800) 930-2770 or visit Agrace.org/PalliativeCare.
