FIRE SAFETY
Behind your guest room door, you will find a floor plan of the guest room corridor on which your guest room is located. Please study it carefully and then take a moment to walk this corridor and familiarize yourself with it. Take special notice of the number of doors to reach the exit and which direction to turn, as the corridor may have smoke in it, making it nearly impossible to identify the exit door from any other door in that area. Also note the location of the fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull boxes and the automatic closing fire/smoke doors.
Please acquaint yourself with the following procedures. They will help you in the unlikely event of an emergency:
PRE-PLAN YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE. Locate and check out both the nearest exit door and the stairwell. Count the guest room doors between your room and the exit. Remember, the balcony may also be used as an exit.
KNOW WHERE YOU PLACED YOUR GUEST ROOM KEY. You will need your key in the event that you wish to reenter your room during an emergency. Get in the habit of leaving your key in the same place, preferably on the night stand.
IF YOU DISCOVER SMOKE OR FIRE:
1. Call the Front Desk immediately.
2. Feel the door. If it’s hot, don’t open it.
3. If the door is not hot, place your foot against the door and open it slightly.
4. Look and smell for smoke and odors. Remember, you may be able to exit the stairwell by crawling. There is always less smoke near the floor.
5. Leave your room and close your door.
6. If you are able, pull the nearest fire alarm box.
7. Use exit stairways or fire escapes.
8. Don’t panic! If you see no fire or smoke in the corridor, guests should proceed out of the building at the nearest exit. Once outside, gather near the flag pole by the front of the building and let a staff person know you are out of the building. Do not re-enter the building if the alarm shuts off. Only re-enter when told by a manager that it is safe to do so.
9. If the halls are too smoky, stay in your room. Dial 0 or 911 to inform emergency personnel you are trapped in your room.
a. Fill the bathtub with water; however, never get into the tub.
b. Stuff towels in all openings and around all doors. Use wet tissue to insulate small openings.
c. Wet down anything that is hot, such as doors and walls.
d. Open glass doors only at intervals for fresh air. If smoke becomes dense, stick your head out of the door or window.
e. Await help from the fire department.
TORNADO PROCEDURES
In the event of a tornado, take the following steps immediately:
• Find Shelter! Go to the basement or a place that is on the lowest level in the middle of the Lodge, like an interior hall.
• Avoid windows and doors. Move away from outside walls and stay clear of windows, doors or other glass.
• Protect your head. Try to take shelter under something strong that can protect your head, like a heavy table or a workbench. At the very least, use your arms and hands to protect your head.
• Stay put until either the threat passes or you are advised that it is all clear.
• If damage has occurred, remain away from these areas until they are declared clear by emergency personnel. Keep away from exposed wires.
• If you are caught in your room with no time to get out, go into the bathroom, close the door and sit on the floor or in the tub.
• Cabin guests are advised to find a low-lying ditch if there is not adequate time to reach the Lodge.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
Please do not leave coolers or food on the balconies, in rooms or on the porches in Cabins. Make sure your door is securely shut and locked when you are not in your room. The animals are not afraid to enter the Lodge and are capable of opening doors (even on an upper level)!

PARK HISTORY
The vast gorges and towering cliffs of Hocking Hills have been a natural wonder to Ohioans for generations. Evidence even suggests that as long as 7,000 years ago members of the native Adena Tribe inhabited the Hocking cliffs.
By the mid 1700s, Native American tribes, such as the Wyandot, Delaware and Shawnee, traveled through these hills. Natives called the river “Hockinghock,” meaning “Bottle River,” which refers to the shape that glacial melt had carved the sandstone gorges.
After the Greenville Treaty of 1795, numerous settlers moved into the Hocking region, establishing Hocking County in 1818. By 1835, powder and grist mills were constructed at Cedar Falls, leading to wider development of the area.
In 1870, the cave areas had already become well-known recreational attractions. The first land purchase by the state of Ohio for preserving the natural resources of the park was made in 1924; the first parcel included the now famous Old Man’s Cave. Subsequent purchases expanded the public lands as State Forest Parks protected by the Department of Forestry.
After the creation of The Ohio Department of Natural Resources in 1949, the Division of Parks and Watercraft assumed management of the Hocking Hills State Park and Natural Area complex, which today include seven areas: Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Old Man’s Cave, Whispering Cave, Conkle’s Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House.
A dining lodge and cottages were built for the park in 1972. However, the dining lodge was closed after it caught fire in 2016. A new lodge and hotel was opened in October, 2022.
NATURAL HISTORY
The natural history of the park is as fascinating as it is beautiful. Amongst the sandstone, visitors can learn about Ohio’s natural history from our naturalists or the historical markers present throughout the park.
The scenic landmarks of the seven areas in the Hocking Hills State Park complex are all made up of water-carved Black Hand Sandstone. The bedrock of this sandstone was deposited over 350 million years ago and used to cover all of Ohio. Millions of years of uplift and stream erosion chiseled away the rock, leading to the stunning gorges and cliffs seen today.
The sandstone contains a softer more malleable middle zone and a harder top and bottom zone. The recess caves at Ash Cave, Old Man’s Cave, Whispering Cave and Cantwell Cliff are all carved into the softer middle zone. Weathering and erosion widened cracks found in the middle layer of sandstone to create the unusual formations found at the Rock House.
Other features of the rock include cross-bedding, honeycomb weathering and slump blocks. Cross-bedding is a cross section of an ancient sand bar in the sandstone. Honeycomb weathering appears as small holes in rock walls that look like a beehive comb; this pattern is formed after water washes out small pockets of loosely cemented sand grains. The huge slump blocks of rock littering the streams tumble from nearby cliffs when cracks widen and a block is no longer supported by the main cliff.
GEOLOGY OF THE HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK REGION
Glaciers never physically reached the park area, but their impact can be found in the vegetation that grows within the gorges. Glacial runoff brought towering eastern hemlocks, the Canada yew and the yellow and black birch trees to Hocking.
