HISTORY OF THE HO-CHUNK

THE HO-CHUNK NATION — A PART OF WISCONSIN SINCE THE BEGINNING

WHO ARE THE HOCAK (HO-CHUNK)

Since the beginning of our time, the people of this homeland called themselves “Hocak” (Ho-Chunk), meaning “People of the Big Voice” or “People of the Sacred Language.” Our homeland was called “Wazija Haci,” meaning “Those Who Dwell in the Pines.” The Hocak were farmers, fisherman, hunters and gatherers. Throughout our oral history, our homeland stretched from present-day Green Bay to Chicago to St. Louis to the Twin Cities. Wazija Haci was a vast homeland; the Hocak survived by moving with the seasons to sustain the foods necessary for survival. The Hocak would move their families and villages to various places, still maintaining cultural and religious practices. Teachings, music, stories and ceremonies were at the center of the Hocak way of life. We were called by the surrounding Algonquin-speaking tribes as “Winnebago,” and it was accepted by the early European settlers until constitutional reform occurred in 1993. The tribe officially changed their name to what we call ourselves, Hocak.

SINCE THE EUROPEAN ARRIVAL 1634-1981

These were trying times for the Hocak people. Many of our people died from sicknesses and were unable to live healthy lives. We were treated as we no longer had a stake in our homeland or capacity to live as a highly

productive society. During the 1820s, the federal government began the removal process. Five removals occurred during the 1820s through the 1860s, with the treaty abiding faction finally settling in Nebraska. The Hocak from Wazija Haci refused to be moved onto the reservations with the treaty abiding faction, and during this removal period, remained in Wisconsin, hiding to escape capture. As time progressed, Hocak from Wazija Haci faced other problems for wanting to remain; federal policies such as relocation, assimilation and government boarding schools did all they could to change our people to be a part of mainstream society. Prior to 1981, during the infant years of our former tribal government, we were faced with trying to deal with resolving our social, health and education and community concerns with little to no funding.

Today, there are more than 6,000 members of the Ho-Chunk Nation, and we hold title to more than 2,000 acres of land. As our forefathers, we love our homeland and strive to preserve our language and culture. Today, our gaming and enterprises give our Nation the opportunity to resolve our problems and create opportunities for the present and future generations of our people. GIFT CERTIFICATES: Certificates can be purchased with cash through any casino cashier’s cage.

GUEST LAUNDRY: Coin-operated washers and dryers are available for use, located on every floor, across from rooms 1401, 2401, 3401 and 4401.

HOUSEKEEPING: If you need extra pillows, hygiene products, hangers, linens, towels or blankets, dial “27982” for the operator. Pack ‘n Play and rollaway beds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a $10 fee (plus tax) for rollaway beds. (Rollaway beds may only be used in a room with a king bed, per relevant fire laws.)

ICE & VENDING MACHINES: Beverage vending machines and free ice machines are located on every floor, across from rooms 1401, 2401, 3401 and 4401.

GENERAL INFORMATION

INTERNET ACCESS: FREE Wi-Fi in all rooms and throughout the casino. Make sure your Wi-Fi is turned on and you will be directed to accept our terms.

MAIL: If you have something to send through the U.S. Mail just drop it off at the Front Desk. Our guest service representative will be glad to take care of it for you.

RV PARK: We have Premier, Luxury and Deluxe sites for your enjoyment. For your convenience we have pull-thru or back-in stalls, comfort station available with the showers, vending machines and laundry facilities.

ROOM PRODUCTS POLICIES: All rooms are inventoried prior to your arrival. Should any room items, such as bedding, linens, pillows and towels, become missing from your room past check-out, they will be considered purchase items and your credit card/debit card will be charged. ROOM DAMAGES POLICIES:

Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells Hotel reserves the right to charge guests the cost of rectifying damage caused by the deliberate or reckless act of the guest to the hotel’s property or structure. Should this damage come to light after the guest has departed, we reserve the right to make a charge to the guest’s credit card or send an invoice for the amount to the registered address.

LIABILITY POLICY

HOUSEKEEPING POLICIES: Ho-Chunk Hotel provides daily housekeeping service. If you do not wish to have daily service, you may call the Front Desk to request no service for that day or indicate by DO NOT DISTURB sign on your door. However, the management reserves the opportunity to check on multiple-night guests after 48 hours during which a DO NOT DISTURB sign has been posted. Ho-Chunk Hotel management reserves the right to inspect hotel rooms on a regular basis.

NO-SMOKING POLICY: Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells Hotel is A NONSMOKING ESTABLISHMENT. A smoke removal fee of up to $250 will be assessed to your account if you smoke in the room.

NO-PETS POLICY: Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells Hotel does not allow pets in the resort or its rooms unless the animal is a registered service animal. Service animals must

be registered with the guest upon check-in. Unregistered and/or unattended animals can incur a charge of up to (but not limited to) $250 for additional cleaning. The guests will be asked to leave the premises if pets are confirmed by hotel staff to be in the rooms. If the animal is unattended, the animal will be removed by the Sauk County Humane Society.

DEBIT CARD POLICY: If the credit/debit card you are using for check-in is attached to a bank or checking account, a hold will be placed on the account for the full anticipated dollar amount to be owed to the Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells Hotel, including estimated incidentals, through your date of check-out, and such funds will not be released for approximately 14 days from the date of check-out or longer at the discretion of your financial institution. Your bank may charge additional fees.
