Hemlängtan is one of those endearing Swedish combination words that creates a new meaning when two words are brought together.

Literally “home longing,” hemlängtan is a feeling of homesickness when one is kept apart from home or other familiar surroundings.

Of course, this is a universal experience. There are references to the melancholy longing for home, or by extension the sadness of missing something or someone, in many cultures throughout time.

Homesickness is mentioned in the Old Testament and Homer’s Odyssey. The Portugese word for it is saudade. Hemlängtan was at the core of Kristina’s sadness while adapting to new life in Minnesota as described in Vilhelm Moberg’s novels The Emigrants and The New Land.

For many, the American Swedish Institute is a place of comfort and inspiration. When we closed our doors on March 14, little did we know how long this physical separation from our members, volunteers and visitors would last. I think it needs to be said that these weeks of not being together with those we serve and those with whom we work closely have been achingly difficult. ASI is, after all, focused on a mission of being a gathering place for all people. We have longed to be with you and have heard from so many that you are missing this place, too.

During these past months, my exceptional colleagues have created new ways to bring us together — virtually, of course — through online classes, lectures and exhibits. Hundreds of people from near and far, from the West Coast to Europe, have been taking Swedish lessons, enjoying cooking classes and hearing from experts on such wide-ranging topics as the history of the Vikings to Swedish gardens. We have helped families celebrate Midsommar at home, learn a new handcraft and enjoy a virtual cocktail party.

The exhibition Swedish Dads, which was intended at first only for our galleries, is now installed not only online but also outdoors on our perimeter fence for the public’s benefit.

These past months have led us to understand that ASI has a reach not only into our local community but well beyond our physical campus. This gives

us possibilities to offer unique content and to serve an increasingly diverse and geographically distributed audience, including the Phillips West and south Minneapolis neighborhoods that we are a part of. I am so grateful to my colleagues, both staff and board, for their dedicated efforts these past months as we navigate these uncharted waters.

It is with great joy that we look to September 10, when we will reopen ASI and Fika café and finally welcome people through our front doors! To thank our supporters, we have decided to make this a Members-Only Day with extended hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Going forward, we have also adjusted our regular public hours to be open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are ready for you, and you can expect us to have taken many precautions for your health and safety.

We will depend upon your help, too, and ask you to reserve a time for your visit in advance, wear a mask and observe social distancing. Our reopening plan is described elsewhere in this issue of Posten.

I am pleased to say we have extended our 90th anniversary exhibition, extra/ordinary, through January 2021, adapting it for the holiday season.

This imaginative exhibition, more than a year in planning, brings forth many rarely seen objects from our collections and the stories they tell. Some rooms not on public display for decades are now open. This special exhibition has many surprises and insights into the history of our community and the important role that ASI plays in documenting and sharing its history.

We have weathered these last months only because of the thoughtful and generous support of our members and donors. We know that ASI is important to you, which gives us great confidence in the future. Your support will continue to be critical to our fiscal health since we have been unable to garner the earned revenue on which we greatly depend. We are eager to see you soon, whether on campus or in one of our virtual classrooms. Välkomna tillbaka! Tack för allt!

Online and Outside — free admission, through October 4 Explore 15 of the portraits from this acclaimed photography series — virtually on ASI’s website or in person, outside ASI along the historic fence on Park Avenue — and read the experiences of each dad with text in English, Swedish, Spanish and Somali.

The series, by Swedish photographer Johan Bävman, is based on portraits of dads who belong to the small percentage who choose to stay at home with their child for at least six months. Read more about this project, Johan and the dads on page 6-7.

Osher Gallery — free admission, September 8 through November 1 This quilt exhibition builds upon symbols of liberation, resistance and empowerment, offering a visually compelling account of the breadth of experiences and struggles that comprise Black history in an honest and critical way.

Through artistic expression, utilizing the canvas of quilts, the artists of Women of Color Quilters Network have produced works reflecting social commentary on the Civil Rights Movement and issues of race in America. The quilts are symbols of liberation, resistance and empowerment, layered with memories and meanings.

This chapter of American history stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of determined people and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds. The book celebrates all the brave people who put their lives at risk to secure freedom for African Americans.

We’ve missed you and have been working hard during the closure to create a plan that keeps everyone safe while at ASI. This included meeting regularly with our colleagues in the Twin Cities' culture sector to share ideas on how to address museum safety during these times. It’s been wonderful to connect with them, and those that have started to open have provided insight into what’s working — this has helped shape our own reopening plan.

We’re now ready and excited to welcome visitors back, and we’ve extended the extra/ ordinary exhibition for you to explore objects from ASI’s collection and the stories behind them. During any visit, you’ll also notice we’ve made some changes, so thank you

in advance for following the new Visitor Playbook, reading signs, wearing a mask and asking staff for help. We may have to make changes quickly, so make sure you always check our website for the most up-to-date information.

Handwashing. We ask that visitors wash hands before arrival and use hand sanitizer stations throughout their visit.

Limited Capacity. The Turnblad Mansion has so many unique spaces to explore, but some may be closed or have new capacity limits. There will be signs to help safely guide visitors through the museum.

Swedish Dads

Meet the dads behind this internationally acclaimed photography series In 2013, while on parental leave with his oldest son, Viggo, Malmö-based photographer Johan Bävman was looking for role models to help him navigate his new reality of fatherhood. Johan, like all parents in Sweden, benefits from one of the most generous parental leave systems in the world, which allows parents to stay home with each child for a total of 480 days. Swedish parents can choose to split the leave as they wish; however 90 of these days are reserved for each parent and cannot be transferred.

In spite of this generous allowance, only a fraction of Swedish fathers use the entirety of their parental leave, and only 14% of parents choose to share the days equally.

Johan found himself among this minority as he chose to stay home with his son for nine months. During this time, he found himself battling loneliness and uncertainty in his new role, and worried about not being the dad that he wanted to be.

“When I understood how few dads take advantage of Sweden’s parental leave system, I realized how important this topic was to document and discuss — not only for those in Sweden but for other countries as well.

I wanted to find out why these men have chosen to stay at home so much longer than the majority of Swedish dads.”

Out of this experience, Johan created Swedish Dads, a special series of 45 portraits that capture the real, often unique moments

of fatherhood from Swedish fathers who have chosen to stay home with their children for six months or longer. Fifteen of these photos were compiled into an exhibition that has traveled to more than 70 countries and is now on view in a special digital gallery on ASI’s website and outside ASI along the historic fence on Park Avenue.

What began as a few selfies of Johan and his son soon grew into a nearly three-year project that brought him into contact with Swedish fathers from all walks of life and ultimately became an important platform for contributing to discussions around parenting and gender equality present in both Sweden and the United States.

The images in this series are dynamic, often relatable, and make you think. In choosing the 15 photos that made up the touring exhibition, Johan said “I wanted to find good variety between laughter and love and the hard work that you have to put in to become a good father.”

Like Johan, Said also experienced a sense of uncertainty being home. “As a Swedish Muslim living in an immigrant neighborhood, I feel a little bit alone as a dad on parental leave. I only know other women in the neighborhood who are home on parental leave with their children, no men.”

Johan shared that Said traveled to Palestine to open the exhibition in Ramallah on behalf of Johan. “He became a superstar over there … he become a local role model that other dads could relate to. He makes a difference wherever he goes.”

Johan keeps in touch with all the dads from the series, especially Said. Johan first met Said through another assignment to photograph the recreation center where Said works as a role model for youth and young men in the neighborhood. Johan shared the admiration he has for Said: “When I met him again weeks later to photograph for Swedish Dads I understood even more the difference he makes in his

role as a present dad. I realized that he was so important for the story and that he really had to fight for so much more then I had to do.”

The initiative, curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi and organized by Women of Color Quilters Network and the Textile Center, explores the themes of police brutality and racism in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd.

Other host venues include the Weisman Art Museum, the Division of Indian Work, Homewood Studios, the Merchandising and Design Gallery at St. Catherine’s University and Studio 106 with a culminating exhibition at the University of Minnesota’s Katherine E. Nash Gallery in 2021.

As 'Paneless' as Possible.

Window Restoration in the Turnblad Mansion Curt Pederson, ASI’s Senior Curator of Historic Properties, explores what it takes to keep the Turnblad Mansion’s windows in tip-top shape in a special new video series.

When the Turnblad family built their mansion in the early 1900s, they spared no expense to make sure their castle was of the highest caliber in craftsmanship and design. This included ensuring that the building’s 100+ windows were of the best quality. Crystal clear quarter-inch thick glass panes — many of them curved in impressive form — illuminate nearly every room. Each window was built with old-growth white pine that was then coated to a gleam in natural shellac imported from India. Built directly into each window are unique

hand-operated steel and copper locking mechanisms called a mortise barrel bolts.

More than 100 years later, the Turnblad’s design choices continue to add to the visitor experience — especially for those visitors curious about the building’s architecture.

They also require ASI to employ a complex web of specialized preservation activities to maintain this historic asset. If a window begins to show some wear after more than a century of Minnesota weather, any work needed to restore the window to its original glory requires the expertise of highly skilled and specialized conservators.

In 2019, as part of a long-range plan to restore and preserve the Turnblad Mansion and Carriage House in their entirety, ASI launched a project to restore the Mansion’s many windows. To do so, ASI contracted with Fresh Air Finishers, a Twin Cities-based restoration company whose expertise and experience were a perfect fit.

Their work embodies ASI’s commitment to preserve the historic Turnblad Mansion in its original state and has already yielded impressive results, with two of the Mansion’s more heavily damaged windows now gleaming as if new. Fresh Air Finishers restored weather-damaged wood through a specialized technique that keeps the original wood material intact instead of replacing it with new wood. They removed the

historic panes of glass, re-glazed them, and returned them to their original frames. The original mortise barrel bolts, long frozen by corrosion, have been cleaned, restored, and now work as if installed yesterday.

This window project is the focus of the first episode of a new short video series called Mansion Musings. For each video, Curt Pederson, ASI’s Curator of Historic Properties, will be joined by a host of historic preservation specialists to explore (and boil down!) a quirky, complex or little known activity that takes place as part of ASI’s long-range campus restoration plan.

For the first episode, Curt was joined by David and Jamie from Fresh Air Finishers.

For 90 years, ASI and the community have worked to preserve the Turnblad Mansion for the future. With your support, this historic building — and all it represents — will remain a gathering place for all people for another 100 years.

Nordic Handcraft The American Swedish Institute’s Nordic Handcraft workshops bring Nordic-inspired handcraft traditions to life. Grounded in the Swedish slöjd (handcraft) tradition, our instructors offer innovative and creative takes on traditional folk arts.

VIRTUAL: Wire Whisk with Kayla McDaniels* Wednesday, September 9, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Try out the traditional Scandinavian art of luffarslöjd, or wire work, while making a practical wire whisk for your kitchen! Traditionally made by traveling peddlers, wire objects have been found in Scandinavian homes and farmsteads for hundreds of years. With a pair of pliers and a few dowels, you will transform stainless steel wire into a useful object to put to use. Materials are included in the class fee and will be available for pick up at ASI or can be shipped for a $5 fee.

Register at least one week in advance if you would like the materials shipped. $35 ASI members / $40 non-members OUTDOORS: Green Woodcarving 101 with Josh Torkelson Saturday, September 12, 1 – 3:30 p.m.

This quick overview of the fundamentals of woodcarving will introduce you to the tools, terminology and concepts of working with green wood in the Scandinavian tradition. With a carving knife in hand, you’ll practice simple knife grips safely and maybe even finish a small butter spreader. This is a great opportunity for new carvers to try out a Swedish style carving knife and find out if woodcarving is a good fit for them! This class welcomes students ages 14 and up, if registered alongside an accompanying adult. Students will meet outdoors, using

COVID-appropriate safety precautions. Cancellation policies may vary for this class — please see the website registration page for more information. $30 ASI members / $35 non-members OUTDOORS: Green Woodcarving 102 with Josh Torkelson Sundays, September 13, 20, 27, 1 – 4 p.m.

Learn foundational skills for working with fresh cut green wood with traditional hand tools. From discussions about safe tool use and acquiring green wood, to contemplation on design and decoration, this four part class will offer a foundation to any aspiring or emerging woodworker. Designed to be a next step for students who have taken ASI’s Green Woodcarving 101 class or have otherwise dabbled in carving. Students need some hand strength and flexibility to take part in this course and are encouraged to provide their own tools. Meets outside at ASI with social distancing precautions. $155 ASI members / $175 nonmembers, $20 materials fee paid to instructor VIRTUAL: Visible Mending with Maddy Bartsch* Thursday, September 17, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The movement toward visible mending uses the beauty of patches and stitching to give clothing new life while placing the mends front and center. Maddy will walk students through the basic concepts and techniques behind visible mending and also take time to address specific questions. Students may use supplies they already have at home or may purchase a kit of mending tools and materials for $10, available for pick up or shipping (for an additional $5 fee). Students who are providing their own materials may want to have on hand: Thread, fabric patches, needles, scissors, pins, fabric pencil or chalk, thimble, needle threader, mending ruler and an iron. $5 ASI members / $10 non-members

OUTDOORS: Nature-Patterned Fused Glass Plates with Susan Tracy Saturday, September 26, 1 – 4 p.m.

This workshop introduces the art of glass fusing and slumping. We'll use a simple pattern from nature to design a pair of vibrant six-inch fused glass plates using creativity, cutting tools and the heat of a kiln.

The plates will be fused and slumped by the instructor after the workshop and available for pick up in October from ASI. This class will take place outside under open tents on ASI’s front lawn, with COVIDappropriate safety measures. This class has a rain date of Sunday, October 4. $55 ASI members / $65 non-members; $40 materials fee VIRTUAL Stenciled Textiles with Kirsten Aune* Saturday, October 10, 2 – 4 p.m.

Dive into the art of fabric stenciling with Duluth textile artist Kirsten Aune during this remote class. Taking inspiration from Kirsten’s colorful, bold patterns and modern Scandinavian design, students will create their own designs for use on a simple project such as a pillow or small purse. From cutting stencils to finishing projects with hand printed patterns, this class will provide an overview of fabric stenciling techniques that can be applied to home and apparel projects. Students provide their own tools and materials; please contact ASI for the list. $55 ASI members / $65 non-members VIRTUAL: Coiled Baskets with Teresa Audet* Tuesday, October 13, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Try out a simple basket-making technique and create a small coiled basket in a few hours! Students will receive a kit with a pre-drilled wooden base, then build the sides of the basket using rope, twine and simple hand stitching techniques to hold the coiled basket sides together. Your finished basket will be about 5” x 5”. A great project for ages 13 and up! Materials are included in the class fee and will be available for pick up at ASI or can be shipped for a $5 fee. Register at least one week in advance if you would like the materials shipped. $60 ASI members / $70 non-members VIRTUAL: Sámi Inspired Color Band Bracelet with Liz Bucheit* Saturday, October 17, 2 – 4 p.m.

Braid and finish a beautiful bracelet inspired by the Sámi art of tenntråd, or pewter wire art. Students will receive a kit with all the materials to make a bracelet out of natural materials including pewter wire, reindeer leather and an antler button, plus a reusable clamp for future braiding projects. Materials are included in the class fee and will be available for pick up at ASI or can be shipped for a $5 fee. Register at least one week in advance if you would like the materials shipped. $100 ASI members / $110 non-members VIRTUAL: Paper Quilled Hearts with Kayla McDaniels* Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Try out paper quilling, the art of coiling and assembling thin strips of paper, to create a delicate heart ornament or window decoration. As Kayla demonstrates the fundamentals of paper quilling, students will work alongside from home to create their own quilled hearts with supplied kits. Students will be encouraged to send one heart back to CATALOG

Call for Kindertransport stories from Minnesota Kindertransport (German for "Children's Transport") was the organized rescue effort that brought thousands of Jewish children from Nazi Europe to Great Britain, Sweden and other countries in the late 1930s.

In 2021, the exhibition, Kindertransport — Rescuing Children on the Brink of War will be on display at ASI from July 24 to October 31. This exhibition explores the difficult and often heartbreaking journeys using original artifacts, personal stories and engaging media. We are researching how Minnesotans and their families were personally affected by the Kindertransport.

Gather Virtually During the American Swedish Institute's New Programs During these uncharted times, ASI has turned its programs on their heads to create experiences that bring us together virtually. Programs such as Cocktails at the Castle, Makers Mornings and Swedish-language classes invite participants to learn something new and connect with others from their own homes.

We’re continuing ASI’s role as a gathering place for all, even if we gather on Zoom. This summer, we launched two programs with ASI’s mission in mind: Art and Anecdotes and Stories in a Snapshot.

The Youth & Family Team strove to offer opportunities for adults who feel isolated at home due to the coronavirus. For virtual gatherings, we knew our goals needed to include: • Connect by sharing their experiences related to ASI. Swedish-American culture and/ or Sweden • Practice and nurture visual literacy; experiences to interact with ASI’s material collection in meaningful and interactive ways • Capturing stories from ASI’s community

The exhibition, Kindertransport — Rescuing Children on the Brink of War was created and organized by Yeshiva University Museum and the Leo Baeck Institute, New York, and is being co-presented in Minnesota by the Greenberg Family Fund for Holocaust Awareness at Beth El Synagogue, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and the American Swedish Institute.

During Stories in a Snapshot, participants gather at 2 p.m. every Tuesday for this free, interactive program, allowing visitors a glimpse at photos from ASI’s collection.

Art and Anecdotes invites preschoolers and their adults to engage in art exploration and creative, collaborative storytelling. Together, we examine artwork and historic photographs from ASI’s collection using visual thinking strategies. These increase a child’s engagement and help nurture the ability to relate to art and celebrate different viewpoints. We also use the talents of our Program Associate, Ingrid Aune, who holds a degree in Vocal Music, to engage participants in music and movement.

The second half of the program is based on the TimeSlips approach to storytelling based on historic photographs. Participants are freed from the idea of “right” and “wrong” answers as we explore what they imagine is taking place in the picture. Preschoolers can live in the moment as they draw from their experiences or imaginations to create incredible stories together.

Cinnamon Bun Day October 4 Swedes, and those across the globe who share this love, devote an entire day — every year on October 4 — to cinnamon buns! Kanelbullens dag (Cinnamon Bun Day) started in 1999 when the Home Baking Council (Hembakningsrådet) celebrated its 40th anniversary. Created to celebrate Sweden’s rich tradition of bullar, or buns, it has now has become an observed yearly tradition for Swedes (plus Swedish-Americans and all other cinnamon bun aficionados) to bake and eat these delicious pastries. Take ASI’s virtual Nordic Table class on October 2 or October 4 and watch for recipes so you can participate and eat from the comfort of your home.

For centuries, families have created woven paper heart ornaments to decorate their Christmas trees. During our upcoming Jul exhibition, An extra/ordinary Holiday in extraordinary Times, we invite you to help fill the ASI lobby with handmade paper heart ornaments.

The ASI staff has missed you tremendously during our closure. As we come together to celebrate this first Jul season following many difficult months, we hope for help creating a visual representation of our love of people like you who make up our community dedicated volunteers, neighbors, community partners, ASI members, makers, families, and individuals who attend our programs.

Community is at the core of the American Swedish Institute. Please help us continue a beloved Nordic tradition and honor the ASI community by creating heart ornaments to fill our lobby.

You can find templates for a variety of paper hearts at ASImn.org/paperhearts.

Pick your favorite design, create as many ornaments as you wish, and send your hearts to ASI. All hearts must be created with inspiration from the templates on the website and measure 4.5 to 6 inches wide.

ASI online language classes: “A silver lining in the cloud of the pandemic” ASI may have closed its physical doors in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the language program has opened virtual ones.

To allow our continuing students the chance to maintain their Swedish and Finnish even while the building was closed, language classes were quickly shifted to the online platform Zoom for the spring and summer and this fall term. What we did not expect was the influx of new students from outside the Twin Cities area! We are so pleased to now have students from states all over the U.S. including: Arizona, California, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, Washington DC, Wisconsin and more – there is even a student tuning in from Germany!

Language Programs Coordinator Liz Stopka checked in with some of these new students to find out why they are taking language classes online with ASI. Why are these new students studying Swedish online with ASI? Students are learning Swedish for multiple reasons. Many students mentioned a family connection to Sweden, whether it be a Swedish partner, a Swedish son or daughter-in-law, or ancestors who immigrated to the U.S. long ago. Many students have visited Sweden or have friends there. Some hope to live there someday. Several students mentioned their interest in Swedish and Nordic culture. And some are

studying Swedish for the simple joy of learning a new language, and all that can teach you about the world.

Outside of certain parts of the U.S., it can be difficult to find Swedish classes. Many students mentioned the lack of classes in their area combined with their feeling that language learning apps were not enough as reasons that they decided to take an online class with ASI. What are students saying about the online classroom experience?

• “I've really enjoyed the virtual classes and feel much more comfortable meeting online with 10 other strangers than I would have originally thought … Our class has built, despite the distance, a certain group dynamic and a comfortable space where we can ask questions, make mistakes and challenge ourselves if we want to.”
