Carve wood, knit a sweater, create with glass, make a bracelet, make some earrings, experiment with natural dyes, experiment with watercolor painting, cook with mushrooms, launch Taco Night, try needle felting, craft a fall wreath, practice your Swedish, begin to speak Finnish, bring your kids and babies to the Castle! Nordic Handcraft The American Swedish Institute’s Nordic Handcraft workshops bring Nordic-inspired handcraft traditions to life. Grounded in the Swedish slöjd (handcraft) tradition, our instructors offer innovative and creative takes on traditional folk arts. ASI welcomes students from all backgrounds and offers scholarships to increase access to our programs. For more about scholarships and our current in-person safety precautions visit ASImn.org.

IN-PERSON Watercolor Zigzag Sketchbook: Counting the Castle with Tara Sweeney Thursday, September 9 & Friday, September 10, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Sketch your way inside and outside ASI’s Turnblad Mansion in this playful scavenger hunt as you combine watercolor and ink in a pocketsized sketchbook. Learn the basics of mingling watercolor and ink in a portable format with expert demonstrations, individualized support and plenty of inspiration. Take home a keepsake zigzag sketchbook as well as the know-how to keep sketching wherever you go.

All levels of ability welcome. This class has a materials list; please see the website.

IN-PERSON Craft & Cocktails Workshop: Intro. to Kolrosing with Kayla Ann Thursday, September 16, 6:30 – 8 p.m.

A decorative technique used in Scandinavia since at least Viking times, kolrosing is the art of scratching designs into wood and filling in the lines with earth, bark or coal dust to reveal the patterns. This Craft & Cocktails workshop will introduce basic kolrosing tools and techniques while you sip on a signature drink from FIKA Café. You’ll leave with a small wooden trivet and a new appreciation for this age-old decorative technique! $40 ASI members / $45 non-members

$170 ASI members / $190 non-members IN-PERSON Tomte Mugs with Sue Flanders and Ingrid Sundstrom Saturday, September 11, 1 – 3 p.m.

Decorate your own mugs with Tomte, the charming character from Swedish folklore.

Use colorful underglazes to paint Tomte (using a provided pattern or another design of choice) onto two bisque ware mugs prepared by potter Sue Flanders and then coat the mugs with a clear glaze. Nordic Handcraft VIRTUAL Pewter Thread Sparkle Hoop Earrings with Liz Bucheit* Saturday, September 18, 10 a.m. – noon CT Using pewter wire thread and a macramé style weave, create a pair of hoop earrings with a silver drop and sterling silver French hook ear wires. Finished hoops are approximately 1 inch in diameter and display a soft shimmery sparkle in sunlight and candlelight. This class includes a kit ($65 value); please see the website for more information. $110 ASI members / $120 non-members VIRTUAL Seasonal Fall Wreaths with Christine Hoffman* Thursday, September 22, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. CT Create a completely natural, unique fall wreath from foraged elements in your backyard! You can purchase a starter kit with a vine wreath and dried materials, or simply follow along from home. Christine will walk through the basic techniques of making a wreath and offer tips for collecting wild materials at the end of the growing season, leaving time for plenty of questions and feedback on student creations. $30 ASI members / $35 non-members; $20 optional kit IN-PERSON Glass Minnesota Coasters with Susan Tracy Saturday, September 25, 1 – 3:30 p.m.

Join glass artist Susan Tracy to make two fused-glass coasters with a Minnesota theme – a unique gift or decoration to show off your state pride! You’ll learn about the fundamentals of glass fusing while choosing glass in various colors and shapes to create designs and

patterns. After class, the instructor will fuse your creations and return them to ASI for pick up. $45 ASI members / $50 non-members; $30 materials fee VIRTUAL The King’s Sweater with Laura Ricketts* Sundays, September 26, October 3 & 10, 1 – 3 p.m. CT In April 1940, the Norwegian royal family, including Crown Prince Harald, escaped in the night during the Nazi invasion of Norway. In this class for advanced knitters, you will recreate the sweater three-year-old Prince Harald (now King Harald V of Norway) was wearing during their evacuation and trip to America. Knitting historian and designer Laura Ricketts has recreated the full pattern and will teach the process in three weekend sessions. Students provide their own materials; please see the website for more information. $95 ASI members / $105 non-members; includes $10 materials fee for pattern IN-PERSON Intergenerational Felted Mushroom Homes with Jen Newburg Saturday, October 2, 1 – 3 p.m.

Make cute and fluffy mushroom houses ready for imaginative play in this intergenerational class. Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating two mushroom-shaped houses using needle felting to poke colorful wool roving into place is a fun and easy craft for all ages!

Intergenerational Felted Mushroom Homes with Jen Newburg

IN-PERSON Plant-Based Dyeing for Beginners with Maddy Bartsch Saturday, October 9, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Have you wanted to try plant-based dyeing but didn’t know where to begin? Join us to learn the what, why and how before trying it out using plant-based dyes grown right here in Minnesota! We’ll try out both bundle dyeing and vat dyeing using provided textiles.

No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome! See website for list of things to bring. $55 ASI members / $65 non-members, $15 materials fee VIRTUAL Lecture: Intro. to Swedish Dalmålning with Pieper Fleck Bloomquist* Saturday, October 9, 2 – 4 p.m. CT Join folk artist Pieper Bloomquist for this lecture on the history of dalmålning and how Pieper has adapted these conventions to contemporary stories in her own paintings.

Pieper will also walk through how to get started

VIRTUAL Advanced Sámi-Inspired Bracelets with Liz Bucheit* Saturdays October 16 & 23, 1 – 4 p.m. CT Expand your technical jewelry expertise by creating a beautiful multi-braid bracelet with traditional materials used by Sámi craftspeople.

In this two-part class, you will use pewter thread to create a double coiled four-weave braid with twisted borders on black reindeer hide.

Moderate hand strength and dexterity required.

This class includes a kit ($125 value); please see the website for more information. $210 ASI members / $220 non-members VIRTUAL Needle Felted Moomin with Laura Berlage* Friday, October 22, 1 – 4 p.m. CT Create a fun felted character that would be at home in any of Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories.

Follow step-by-step instructions to transform hand-dyed wool from the instructor’s own sheep into a Moomin character that will fit in the palm of your hand. Needle felting is easy and therapeutic, and it’s fun to watch as your wooly friend comes to life. You will receive enough wool to make a second Moomin, perfect for continuing with this craft beyond class. Nordic Handcraft IN-PERSON Swedish Fritt Broderi with Natalie Norman Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Fritt broderi, or “free embroidery,” is a creative, open style of embroidery with historic roots. This class will use current motifs to play with color, shape and creativity to make a small sampler.

This class is suitable for both beginners and more experienced embroiders who want to try a new technique. The materials fee will cover everything you need, but you may also want to bring some of your own materials; see website for more info. $55 ASI members / $65 non-members; $5 materials fee IN-PERSON Green Woodcarving 101 with Sam Gathje Saturday, October 30, 2 – 4:30 p.m.

Get a taste of woodcarving in this half-day class. This quick overview to the fundamentals of woodcarving will introduce you to the tools, terminology and concepts of working with green wood. With a carving knife in hand, you’ll practice simple knife grips and maybe even finish a small butter spreader. This is a great opportunity for new carvers to find out if woodcarving is a good fit for them! Open to ages 16 and up; ages 12-15 welcome alongside a registered adult.

COMMUNITY CRAFT IN-PERSON Makers Night Wednesday, September 16 & Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Gather with other makers for a friendly and productive evening! Makers Night is a monthly opportunity for anyone interested in craft to settle in for an evening of working with their hands in community. Grab a project and share conversation, tips and questions.

VIRTUAL Makers Mornings* Every Tuesday, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. CT Join other makers online for this weekly opportunity to work, share and visit in a relaxed virtual setting. VIRTUAL Makers Mornings

YOUTH HANDCRAFT IN-PERSON Starting with Slöjd with Anna Ruhland Starting with Slöjd is a monthly program for early elementary children who are ready to start crafting! Whether we’re playing with wool, wire, clay or more, we’ll explore new tools, materials and skills that prepare kids for a lifelong love of handcraft, or slöjd. These dropoff programs are suitable for students in grades K-3. Pre-registration required. $10 ASI members / $15 non-members.

Sew a Felt Pencil Case Sunday, September 19, 1 – 2 p.m.

Sew and decorate a felt pencil case (which can of course hold other treasures too!) as we start the new school year.

Make a Fall Nature Mobile Sunday, October 17, 1 – 2 p.m.

Use natural materials to create a mobile to hang in your yard or home to celebrate fall!

We’ll practice threading and tying things together to assemble our fall mobiles, then take them home.

Nordic Table Nordic Table workshops celebrate and explore Nordic foodways — from heritage traditions to the contemporary “New Nordic” movement.

Demo classes show many steps or recipes in a short class; they are not intended for students to cook along during class. Students are welcome to register for demos and Q&As even if they cannot attend live; recordings of the programs will be shared after class and available to rewatch for one month.

Workshops are participatory classes with shopping lists provided one week in advance.

These classes are limited in size to facilitate instructor-student contact.

VIRTUAL Demo: Taco Night with Patrice Johnson* Thursday, September 23, 6:30 – 8 p.m. CT This evening of fun recipes highlights two recent Swedish food trends: 1) the beloved Swedish taco night and 2) plant-based eating. Swedes now eat more tacos than anyone else in Europe, and while Swedish tacos look similar to Tex-Mex style tacos, Swedes add their own twists. Patrice will demonstrate some vegetarian and vegan style recipes, aligned with Sweden’s increasing focus on eating a sustainable and plant-based diet.

VIRTUAL Demo: Mouthwatering Mushrooms with Erin Swenson-Klatt* Thursday, October 14, 1 – 2 p.m. CT Swedes love mushrooms — a quintessential fall ingredient in many dishes. Erin will talk a little about the tradition of mushroom foraging in Sweden and demonstrate a couple of recipes that highlight these forest treasures. Even if you find them in the grocery store instead of the woods, you’ll know just what to do with those wonderful svampar (mushrooms)!

VIRTUAL Workshop: Let the Right One In — Filmkväll with Patrice Johnson* Saturday, October 30, 4 – 6 p.m. CT Join Patrice for the second Nordic Table filmkväll (movie night) class, where you will cook a thematic menu in your own kitchen with Patrice’s guidance and settle in to watch the movie at home. This month’s movie is Let the Right One In, a horror-romance film to put you in the mood for Halloween. Please note: You’ll have to cue up the film yourself, but it’s widely available for streaming or from other sources.

A shopping list and recipe packet will be shared in advance.

VIRTUAL Q&A: The Swedish Pantry with Erin Swenson-Klatt* Thursday, September 30, 1 – 2 p.m. CT From unfamiliar baking ingredients to food in tubes, explore some of those specialty ingredients showing up in your Swedish cookbooks and recipes. We’ll discuss ingredients specific to the Swedish pantry and where to find them in the U.S., what they’re used for, and what can be substituted in case you don’t have an easy source. Bring your questions (and tips!) for this virtual Q&A over Zoom! $10 ASI members / $15 non-members

Language Classes Explore new worlds! ASI offers year-round opportunities to learn Swedish or Finnish, plus related classes taught in Swedish and English that tap into music, books, Scandinavian history and holiday traditions offering insight into Nordic culture. From traditional classes for adults to opportunities for young students and teens, we have something for all ages.

Online Language Classes for Adults* Fall Term 2021 starts the week of September 13 and runs for 9 weeks Välkommen / Tervetuloa to the online Swedish and Finnish classroom! Most classes are virtual, but select classes will meet in-person at ASI. Class fees are $125 for ASI members / $135 for non-members. Register one week before the term starts to receive the early bird discount ($10 off). We use the program Zoom for online classes. After you’ve registered, you will receive an email with more detailed information about how to enter the online classroom shortly before the starting date of your class. All class times are Central Time (CT).

VIRTUAL Ongoing: Fika på svenska — Swedish Language Table* 2nd Saturday morning of every month, 10 – 11:30 a.m. CT Fika på svenska is an online conversation table held entirely in Swedish. New topics each month explore Swedish language, culture, history and connections to Minnesota.

ASI’s Language Program Fall Kickoff VIRTUAL: Wednesday, September 8, 5:30 – 7 p.m. CT IN-PERSON: Thursday, September 9, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Join the language teachers — either in person in the ASI courtyard or virtually on Zoom — for an evening language program kickoff. Meet old friends or get to know new students, ask questions about fall term classes, speak a little svenska and suomea and — of course — have fun!

Free; RSVP required IN-PERSON Svenska Skolan Fall Term 2021 9 Saturdays, starting September 11, 9 – 11 a.m. (no class October 23 for MEA Weekend) Svenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language and culture program for ages 6-12 that offers an opportunity for children to practice Swedish in a fun and interactive environment. Instruction is tailored to meet the needs of children at all levels of Swedish.

Svenska Skolan Fall Term 2021 will meet in-person, outside — rain, shine or snow!

Meets for two hours per week with students receiving extra take-home activities. Advance registration required. We plan to be back to our regular capacity of teachers and students for fall term. $150 ASI members / $160 non-members

VIRTUAL Intro. to Finnish* Sunday, September 12, 12:45 – 2:45 p.m.

Are you looking for a quick and low-pressure way to get excited about a new language? This two-hour introductory workshop is the perfect way to get a feel for basic Finnish words and grammar. $15 ASI members / $18 non-members VIRTUAL Intro. to Swedish* Sunday, September 12, 3 – 5 p.m.

This two-hour introductory workshop is the perfect way to get a feel for Swedish — pick up a bit of grammar and learn how to pronounce some words as part of basic conversation. $15 ASI members / $18 non-members VIRTUAL Svenska för tonåringar* 9 Tuesdays starting September 14 Svenska för tonåringar (Swedish for teenagers) is a class for students ages 13-18 who are serious about learning Swedish. Perfect for future exchange students, those wanting to improve language skills to communicate with family and friends, or teens interested in learning more

about Swedish culture through language. In this course, students will speak, write and read in Swedish.

There are two sessions, which overlap for 30 minutes to have time as a larger group.

Required materials: Group 1 will use the Mål 1 textbok (övningsbok is not required) which can be purchased through the ASI Museum Store.

Group 2 will use the textbook Allt om Adam which is included in the price for the course.

Local students can buy/pick up their books from ASI, and we can arrange shipping for distance students.

Group 1: 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. CT — for students who are new to / have limited prior Swedish study. $100 ASI members / $110 non-members Group 2: 6:15 – 7:30 p.m. CT — for students who have already been studying Swedish. $125 ASI members / $135 non-members (textbook included)

Youth and Family IN-PERSON ASI’s Preschool Programs Explore Swedish (and Swedish-American) traditions with your little one. Together we’ll answer the questions of “What do Swedish families do throughout the year?” and “Why do they do it?” This program is specifically designed for children ages 3 – 5 and their important adults.

Programs will take place outside. Please dress according to the weather and for messy art projects. In case of severe weather, ASI will move this program indoors. Adult accompaniment is required (limit 2 adults per child). $15 ASI member child / $20 non-member child / Adults free The Flowers’ Festival Preschool Program Friday, September 3, 10 – 11:30 a.m.

Inspired by Elsa Beskow’s picture books, we will immerse ourselves in nature, stories and wonder.

Swedish Forest Friends Preschool Program Friday, October 1, 10 – 11:30 a.m.

Moose and reindeer and bears, oh my! Discover Sweden’s forest creatures through story time, music and crafts.

IN-PERSON Kids at the Castle It’s a morning playdate at the Castle! This action-packed kids and family creative playtime is inspired by the season and encourages adventurous young minds through circle time, storytelling, crafts, visual play, and music and movement.

IN-PERSON Mini-Transmission Dance Party Saturday, September 25, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Back by popular demand at ASI, Mini Transmission is a kids and family dance party hosted by popular DJ Jake Rudh, who has played seriously fun dance floor grooves in the Twin Cities over 20 years. Get ready to boogie, twist and twirl! $3 per person. Advanced registration required.

ASI Birthday Parties will return in 2022 Reservations begin Tuesday, September 7 Throw a fun and memorable party that your special birthday child (or grandchild) will love!

Let ASI Party Staff do the set-up, clean-up and facilitate all activities. Children can choose from Pippi, Vikings, Moomin, DIY Dala Horse or Swedish Birthday Cake party themes. Each party includes craft activities and playtime in the castle. Perfect for children 5 – 12 years old.

Public Programs Virtual Tours Kindertransport Exhibition Virtual Tours* September 14, September 28, October 12 & October 26 at 5 p.m. CT Explore the exhibition Kindertransport – Rescuing Children on the Brink of War during a live, virtual tour via Zoom. Each tour will feature an ASI staff member and a special guest for a highly interactive experience.

Kindertransport University Day September 19, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Join ASI for a day of learning with lectures by experts related to Kindertransport: Dr. Kyle Ward, Professor Minnesota State University, Mankato; Melissa Hacker, filmmaker; Beth Gendler, Executive Director of NCJW Minnesota; and Uri Berliner, Senior Business Editor at NPR. $125, includes boxed lunch and coffee/tea.

Kindertransports to Sweden, Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival film October TBD This documentary by Gülseren Sengezer is the story of four Jewish children who were sent to Sweden in 1939 on a Kindertransport.

Thousands of children were evacuated, 500 of them to Sweden. Those now-elderly children still live with feelings of loss, loneliness, deracination and guilt. Presented in partnership with the Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival. Robert Aronson, Chair at HIAS, the nation’s oldest refugee rights organization, talks about rescuing Jews from the pogroms in Eastern Europe.

Some programs have registration deadlines; we encourage all guests to register at least one week in advance of all programs. Confirmations for all registrations will be sent via email.

Waitlists ASI keeps waitlists for all filled classes, events, and workshops. Please call (612) 871-4907 to be added to a waitlist. ASI will only contact those on waitlists as space becomes available.

Virtual Programs Virtual programs are taught over Zoom. Participants do not need their own Zoom account, but do need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities. Some programs are recorded for documentation or teaching purposes. Complete login instructions are provided upon registration and one day before a program via email. If you have not received login information one day before your program, please contact ASI via phone or email during business hours and before the program begins to receive your login information.

Cancellation and Refund Policy Refunds are not available for cancellations made within one week (seven days) of a program, except in the case of COVID-exposure before in-person programs. While ASI makes every effort to ensure programs and classes run at capacity, ASI reserves the right to cancel a program one week prior to its start date if enrollment has not reached the required minimum. Registrants will be notified by phone or email if a program is cancelled. In the event that ASI cancels a program for any reason, registrants will receive a full refund.

Please allow up to one week for refunds to be processed. Cancellation and refund policies may vary for some programs.

Severe Weather ASI may close and cancel programs in the case of severe weather. ASI contacts program registrants

directly and posts closure information on our website and social media accounts. If ASI remains open for programming during inclement weather, absent registrants are not eligible for refunds.

Health and Safety Precautions ASI will follow up-to-date guidelines for all in person programs this summer. Please see our website at ASImn.org/registrationpolicies for more information about our current safety precautions and guidelines for program participants. ASI encourages vaccinations.

Kits Some virtual programs may use kits, included in the course fee. Kits will include some or all of the materials students need to make their project at home. Kits are available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute approximately one week before class or can be shipped for an additional fee; information for each individual class is available on the website.

Age Policy Most programs and events at ASI are open to all ages. Unless otherwise noted, Nordic Handcraft and Nordic Table workshops are open to ages 16 and older. Some intergenerational workshops may be open to younger registrants alongside registered adults; please see individual program descriptions for more information. Youth programs are designed for specific age groups; all youth registrants should meet age requirements at the time of the course.

Class Scholarships ASI is pleased to welcome students from historically underrepresented groups and cultural communities into our handcraft and food classes at a reduced tuition fee. Limited spaces in each class are available on a first come, first serve basis. Students are invited to use these scholarships up to two times per calendar year.
