From the Head of School and the Chair of the Board At ASIJ, we want our students to embrace their passions, to explore everything from complex math and digital music production to food science and sustainability, with the best teachers, in well-resourced facilities, and using compassion and creativity to inspire their classmates. We want students to feel ready to apply what they are learning to real-world problems and to their lives outside of ASIJ. In order to augment excellent teaching and learning, we continually evolve what and how we teach to meet students where they are, to best use technology, and to develop our Portrait of a Learner competencies within our students whether they are three or 19 years old. Our ability to inspire our students to be lifelong learners and global citizens is bolstered by the many members of the ASIJ community who show their commitment through their partnership, volunteerism, and philanthropy. Thank you for strengthening our school and embodying one of the facets of ASIJ’s mission: make a difference. In the school year, we experienced record-breaking giving during our allcommunity giving day and to our Annual Fund. We established five new endowed funds and welcomed new members to our Gate Society. Hundreds of members of our parent and alumni communities volunteered throughout the year at events on and off-campus, connecting Mustangs far and wide. Last spring, the community viewed the concept shared by Ennead for ASIJ’s future campus. We are excited by the bold path ASIJ is charting as it continues every day to help students to grow as inquisitive people and resilient problem-solvers. We are excited and humbled to serve you and support the school’s vision to Know, Value, and Care for every child. Please feel welcome to reach out with your questions and ideas, and do consider getting involved in the community by lending your time and talent however you can. Wishing you a great school year.

Annual Fund 2022-23

Annual Fund Gifts to ASIJ’s Annual Fund are used in the current fiscal year. They help bridge the gap between tuition and operating expenses, and give the school flexibility to allocate funds where they are needed most. The Annual Fund has grown steadily, thanks to the generosity of the ASIJ community.

Endowment Gifts to ASIJ’s endowment provide a sustainable source of funding for the school. Though ASIJ was established over 120 years ago, its endowment is a newer philanthropic opportunity. Currently, the endowment principal is invested. Per board policy, the first draw will be taken at the end of next fiscal year, after the principal has had a chance to grow. Every endowment gift increases the value of the total endowment and can be designated to support specific areas aligned to donors’ interests and in keeping with the school’s priorities and mission.

Scientific Sequences This past year, ASIJ eighth graders worked with twelfth graders in AP Biology and Synthetic Biology classes to learn to modify genes using CRISPR-CAS9, a technology that can be thought of as genetic scissors to open a DNA sequence to introduce modifications. High school students mentored the middle school students as they went through an experiment exploring the sickle cell anemia gene mutation. Cross-divisional learning like this not only strengthens the Mustang community, it is also a great opportunity for the Synthetic Biology students to solidify their knowledge by teaching it to middle school students. High school student-scientists have many opportunities to teach and learn at ASIJ. For nearly a decade, ASIJ students have entered the annual international iGEM competition, in which high school, university, and postgraduate students are challenged to fix a gene mutation for a real human disease. This past year, ASIJ’s iGEM team, a group students must apply to join, built a tool to help detect breast cancer. Their work earned them a Gold Medal at the international iGEM Jamboree, at which they also listened to and learned from some of the finest university and postgraduate labs in the world. Students on the iGEM team choose to work for several weeks over the summer and nearly every day after school on their projects. They have impressive, in many cases university-level, resources and equipment in faculty member and iGEM advisor Beth Crissy’s classroom, made possible by our annual giving. Building a thorough scope and sequence of coursework between divisions helps a Mustang’s coursework to culminate

in high-end experiences like these. In fact, two students who were eighth graders last year participating in the CRISPR experiment are now on the iGEM team, working side-by-side the upperclassmen in their second and third years as iGEM members. “[All the students on the team] will say that iGEM brought them together in this weird friend group. Some of them would never ordinarily overlap. They all love science,” said Beth. In addition to partnering with the eighth grade, high school science students also guide first grade buddies through experiments throughout the year. “The little kids don’t want us, the teachers, at all. They just want their high school buddies,” gushed Beth. “This year, we’ll try to incorporate vertical farming,” she continued, gesturing to the hydroponic gardens in the corner of the classroom. “The first graders love to do “cool stuff” in the lab and they love having relationships with high school buddies,” explained first-grade teacher Russell Walsh. “And it’s beneficial for us as first-grade teachers to build crossdivisional relationships and dive deep into scientific concepts and processes,” said Melissa Boks, the first-grade teacher who started the partnership with Beth originally. The partnership’s first year of first graders are now in ninth grade. In this way and many others, curriculum coordinators, coteachers, and other kinds of partnerships work to co-design learning experiences that not only meet the needs of all of our students, but engage them in learning that can in turn change the world.

It’s a really valuable experience for the middle school students to be able to get exposure to science and for the high school students to be able to communicate, be able to teach these concepts, because it’s only when we teach the concepts that we fully understand it. We have to know basically everything so that we can explain it in the most simple way, the most easy-tounderstand way, –Kai '23. Watch a video about this project

Endowment While the Annual Fund is the school’s fundraising priority and essential to the yearly fiscal health of the school’s operating budget, a robust endowment will ensure ASIJ’s long-term financial security. Though ASIJ was established over 120 years ago, its endowment is a newer philanthropic opportunity. We give thanks to the donors who established funds within the endowment this year, either for the purpose of ensuring a specific program in perpetuity or providing the school flexibility to use funds where it sees most need. Japan Center co-directors Mariko Yokosuka and Kyoko Takano.

Japan Center Stage Many important Japanese cultural traditions are part of ASIJ curricular and co-curricular activities, often led by experts who have honed their crafts from generations-old teaching. Kyoko Takano, co-director of the school’s Japan Center, is one such master of a craft. Kyoko has been studying Nihon Buyo, a traditional Japanese dance, since she was 16 years old. She finished her high school education through the Takarazuka Music School, an all-girls school providing a rigorous training in dance (modern, tap, ballet, and Japanese), singing, and acting. After graduation, she performed with Takarazuka Revue Company, an all-female performing company for which Kyoko often played the male lead role in their stage productions. Kyoko had long dreamed of receiving a natori, a professional stage name. Natori is only bestowed on qualified students who have passed the various required examinations, which are not easy and take years of practice. However, Kyoko stopped performing, got married, and raised her children, who are ASIJ alumnae. Twenty years later, as her children were older, Kyoko started to get involved in the elementary school’s Nihon Buyo classes and the high school spring musical. She decided it was time to restart her performance career again and work towards her lifelong goal of achieving natori.

ASIJ middle schoolers have been traveling to the Kiyosato Educational Experiment Project since the 1970s. Generations of students will remember learning to live together in nature, taking in majestic views of the Yatsugatake Mountains, and enjoying Kiyosato’s famous ice cream.

A favorite activity at the ELC is introducing our youngest students to real-life sumo wrestlers and explaining to them the art and commitment of the sport.

Kyoko asked her Nihon Buyo master, the renowned Juraku Hanayagi, to come to ASIJ and she worked as his assistant in classes and continued her practice of dance. When she was working from home during the first phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, she devoted the hours she saved from commuting to practice. She eventually passed the Hanayagi School exam and debuted at the National Theater in February 2023 in a Kabuki-style performance. Her long-time dream of achieving natori came true! Kyoko’s natori is Hanayagi Raku Sanjyo – Hanayagi for the school, Raku for her teacher, and Sanjyo from her Takarazuka stage name.

Master swordsman Suiju Kaito taught Grade 7 students about batto, the practice of drawing and cutting with a katana sword, and bushido, the way of the samurai.

MS and HS students learned Kyogen, classical Japanese comedy theater, from the Yamamoto family and their company, living national treasures who are widely acclaimed for their artistry and designated Preservers of Intangible Cultural Properties. Their performance marked the 45th year of Kyogen at ASIJ.

Flexing Space The art of teaching is perpetually changing, and as the intangible qualities of a classroom change, the furniture and spaces need to be flexible, too. Rooms need to easily adapt for independent work, collaborative discussions, and small groups, often in one class period. ASIJ is brimming with smart, inspired students. At the same time that we are making classrooms more effective for student-led, teacher-framed learning, we are also finding more spaces across campus to bring lessons to life in settings outside of the traditional classroom. The middle school administrative suite was reconfigured over the summer to make room for student-led collaborations with faculty and staff. What was once the middle school principal’s office is now a collaborative space for student council and other club meetings, conversations with teachers, and more. Also, the middle school’s curriculum coordinator has moved into the administrative suite, facilitating even further the integration of Portrait of a Learner competencies and Deep Learning within the curriculum.

Across the hall sits a newly-configured Student Center. Featuring soothing lighting, positive mantras on the walls, and non-traditional seating options, including a hammock, the Student Center houses the school’s two middle school counselors. The full-time counselors regularly meet with students to provide support academically, socially, and emotionally. Their program remains as robust as past years, and the new Student Center offers more space for students to gather and a dedicated area for group counseling at this sometimes-turbulent time of adolescence. The biggest community space within the Middle School is the Commons, an inviting area illuminated by skylights. The Commons is the setting of varied scenes: students quietly studying, intense concentration on a 2,000-piece puzzle, energized showings of musical and drama performances, and lounging. The Commons now features foosball tables and oversized lawn games, allowing for organic socializing and just plain fun.

Other campus enhancements:

ASIJ’s commitment is to Know, Value, and Care for every student. Faculty and staff care about students as learners and also as people. Every division works to create a sense of community and connectedness for all students, and advisory sessions and social and emotional learning are cornerstones of the curriculum. Alongside academic content, students are taught to develop Portrait of a Learner competencies, qualities to help them thrive in real-world situations.

25 new laser-illuminated classroom projectors were installed to replace older aging ones

Additional robotics equipment was purchased for the VEX robotics team and classes

New HS library furniture was purchased to provide a variety of seating options and work stations, including interlocking wedge tables that can be reconfigured as needed, lightweight chairs with storable desks for flexible working spaces, and cozy egg-shaped chairs for enhanced focusing

Myriad new software licenses support things like personalized learning in second-grade math, cocurricular registration processes, and technology integration in music classes

Athletics upgrades include items like sound absorption panels in the pool area and new basketball hoops

April Appreciation Every April, the PTA Annual Fund Committee and the Advancement Office invite the community to give to the Annual Fund to share gratitude for ASIJ’s faculty and staff.

and in April then have the opportunity to send messages of appreciation to an individual teacher, member of staff, or group of people who work at school.

Gifts to the Annual Fund support teachers and students every day, and families who make a gift throughout the year

Nearly 150 messages of gratitude were shared with faculty and staff. Below are just a few:

Our daughter really enjoys the English class with you, which has never really been her favorite in the past. She appreciates your method and style of teaching which makes the topics easy to grasp. She finds the feedback and constructive criticism you provide to be extremely helpful and it motivates her to improve and continue making an effort...Thank you for your hard work!

As a parent, it is so comforting to know that he feels he has a trusted adult in you, that you are someone who can help him solve problems and he can talk to, and that you are looking out for him! We are so grateful!

Thank you so much for being such a loving and thoughtful teacher and for making Kindergarten a wonderful class!

Thank you for all that you do as a teacher to help [our daughter] in her learning journey. She really enjoys how you integrate economics and psychology into the Modern World Foundations curriculum and get her to think about the world in a complex, multi-faceted way. You are appreciated.

We wanted to thank you for all your patience and kindness with [our son] this year. He really has learned a lot from guidance. It is so awesome to hear him say things like “I want to talk about how I’m feeling” or to hear him empathize with his brother with “I know how that feels.”

[My daughter] is so happy and lucky to have you as her teacher and she looks forward to going to school every day!

Inquiry and Agency Our teachers inspire our students to be lifelong learners, and they understand the importance of perpetual education for themselves, too. In addition to the 18 major professional development events and 72 online courses and workshops faculty attended last year, nine consultants worked with ASIJ faculty. One of those was Trevor Mackenzie, author of Dive Into Inquiry, which inspires educators to scaffold student-led, teacher-framed lessons. “Trevor’s work with the Elementary School last year provided teachers with professional development that has helped to continue to foster a culture of learning in the elementary school that embraces inquiry-based practices. These practices have helped center the student, empowering them to take ownership of their learning,” explained ES curriculum coordinator Lennie Davis. The Elementary School has been focusing on student inquiry within deep learning for more than three years now, supported by Trevor via continuing professional development throughout the school year. This focus has led to a difference in the questions students are asking, the roles they are undertaking in classroom groups, their enthusiasm and excitement. For example, fifth graders worked in small groups to research and prepare arguments for assertions they chose based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and observations they made while investigating the Chofu campus. This project seamlessly aligned inquiry and student agency with ASIJ’s Portrait of a Learner competencies, which students will use to thrive in today’s world.

“Students are co-creating the learning experiences with the teacher as a guide. These experiences include student voice and interest while ensuring that core learning is still being met,” said Lennie. Research shows that children learn more content when they have agency in their lessons, a point reinforced by ASIJ students’ continued aptitude in traditional standardized testing. As Scott Wilcox, deputy head of school for learning, explained proudly, “when you happen to take a test like that, our kids do really well because they’re great thinkers.”

Kids may forget the content they learn, but what they don’t forget is: I am empowered as a learner, I have agency, and I can act upon the world around me and make a difference. Often in traditional school, kids lose that – or they don’t gain that. If you go through 14 years of school and what you learn is to look to the teacher to tell you the answer or tell you what to do next, that is the opposite of empowerment. If our students don’t feel empowered to make a difference or see themselves as having agency in their own lives or as people who can make an impact in the world around them, we’re in real trouble. –Scott Wilcox, Deputy Head of School for Learning

PTA Impact The PTA relies on volunteers to run its many events and activities. Many different opportunities are available, whether you’d like to volunteer to support the arts or athletics, showcase a hobby or a professional expertise, support the school through fundraising, and much more. Opportunities vary from hour- to year-long commitments.

The PTA Annual Fund Committee was established in 2021 and focuses on building the parent community of giving at ASIJ. Committee members act as ambassadors for the ASIJ Annual Fund, answer questions about the school’s fundraising, and promote participation in the Annual Fund. The committee meets with the ASIJ Advancement Office throughout the year and focuses their outreach on Giving Tuesday in the fall and April Appreciation in the spring.
