HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WALKING SHOE FOR YOU

We interviewed a licensed podiatrist to help you choose the best walking shoes for women. When choosing from the many options available, you should consider which is best for your foot type (i.e., wide or narrow), how much walking you will be doing, and the type of ground on which you'll be standing.

1. Consider your foot type: If you have flat feet, look for a shoe with arch support or add an arch support insert. If you have high arches, look for a cushioned shoe to absorb shock.

2. Think about the surface you'll be walking on: If you mostly walk on smooth surfaces like sidewalks or pavement, look for a comfortable, lightweight sneaker with good cushioning. However, if you do more walking on uneven terrain like trails, you'll want a sturdier shoe with good traction to prevent slipping.

3. Make sure the fit is right: Your walking shoes should be comfortable from the start and not need "breaking in." Try them on with the socks or stockings you intend to wear while walking and walking around the store to ensure they feel good. Also, remember that your feet may swell slightly during exercise, so choosing a shoe that will accommodate this by being slightly larger than your normal size is important.
