Great writing is about more than just slick storytelling and side-splitting gags. What brings kids back to a show time after time are great characters. Characters they love, care about and want to be, or be with… Great characters make a show last longer too. The engine of every story in every episode comes down to three things: what your characters want, need and fear. When you know those things about them, you can create endless stories for them. This session is about how to make kids fall in love with your characters… and buyers fall in love with your show.

DAY 02 HAPPENINGS
Happenings ASIA TV FORUM & MARKET AND SCREENSINGPORE 2014 OPENS At the opening ceremony of Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) and ScreenSingapore 2014, Lawrence Wong, Second Minister for Communications and Information, hailed “an exciting time for Asia’s media industry”. “The outlook for the industry is positive,” Wong added. “A more affluent and discerning middle class is spending more on entertainment. Markets like China, India and Indonesia are growing rapidly. International players are all looking for ways to make inroads into the region.” Wong also revealed that as part of Singapore’s 50th birthday next year, there will be a bumper crop of more than 24 Singapore films hitting big screens, double the average annual output. Optimism around the media industry’s business outlook is reflected in the expected record attendance at this year’s ATF and ScreenSingapore. “A number of countries will also be making their first representation at the market this year,” said Michelle Lim, managing director of Reed Exhibitions. “These include Bangladesh, Croatia, Finland, Nepal and Poland.” “An integrated market like ATF and ScreenSingapore, which showcases television and film content on an integrated market floor, provides a platform for exposure, collaboration opportunities, networking and trade,” Lim added. “Already a mainstay for the global entertainment content industry, this annual event will no doubt continue to drive and elevate Asian content and innovation in the region and beyond.” This year’s ATF and ScreenSingapore, along with the Asian Television Awards (ATA) and the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), are part of the inaugural Singapore Media Festival (SMF). “Through the festival, we hope to create more opportunities for businesses, celebrate the best of Asian TV and film talent, and give Singapore audiences the chance to watch first-rate films with a distinctive Southeast Asian flair,” said Wong.

BUYER's TAKE We focus on live-action TV series and movies and have good volume deals with major players in Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Now that we have a stronghold in live-action TV series from Asia, we will focus on bringing first-run movies from Korea and Japan to the US. We know there are good shows outside of our big markets of Japan, Taiwan and Korea, and that’s what we are after. We know all the players in our traditional markets but outside of that, we are rookies. Southeast Asia is a market we do not know very well; China is a market we are getting to know a bit better. ATF is giving me a good opportunity to meet producers, broadcasters, over-the-top (OTT) players and cable operators in the region whom we would like to cooperate and partner with to become a global online video platform. USD100M MEDIA FUND LAUNCHED AT ATF Yu Dong, founder and chairman of Nasdaq-listed Bona Film Group Limited; Singapore private equity (PE) investment firm Tembusu Partners; and local media entrepreneur, Calvin Cheng, have launched a USD100 million fund targeted at China’s media and entertainment industry. Based in Singapore, the media fund will leverage on the country’s legal framework and status as a financial hub to attract investors from and outside the region. “This year, box-office revenue in China hit RMB30 billion (USD4.8 billion),” said Yu. “China’s media and entertainment industry is forecast to overtake Japan’s by 2018, and
MEDIA LEADERS’ LUNCH At the Media Leaders’ Lunch hosted by the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore, Michelle Lim, managing director of Reed Exhibitions, highlighted the longterm partnerships that have been created amongst diverse industry players at ATF. Lim thanked the participants for making ATF and ScreenSingapore the leading content market in Asia with “so much buzz, so many ideas, and so much inspiration and imagination”. Gabriel Lim, CEO of MDA, added that he is “blown away” by the creative talent and passion in this exciting and vibrant industry. He welcomed the guests to meet him and his team for any assistance “to create long, successful and fulfilling partnerships”.
become the second largest in the world, behind only the US. It is already the second largest film market in the world, and China’s TV industry is set to surpass the UK and Germany by 2016.” Cheng pointed out that around 20 cinema screens are being added in China per day. There are currently around 20,000 screens in China, compared to 40,000 in the US. “If it were to have the same number of screens as the US per capita, it would have 135,000 screens,” he said. “There is an amazing room for growth.” The closed-end, five-year media fund will be formalised on 31 March 2015, with fundraising to begin shortly after. Anchor investors are likely to include Bona Film Group and Thailand’s Chia Tai Group. The fund will invest in media companies, content and technologies and promote international coproductions or joint ventures between China and countries such as Singapore and the US.
ATF is very exciting this year as almost all broadcasters and content providers from Thailand are here after last year’s auction of 24 digital terrestrial television (DTT) licences. We are not looking for any particular format. In our country, people like to watch entertainment content, but we want to add more edutainment content. Even though local content is the most popular in Thailand, Asian content, particularly those from Korea, are also very popular. Globalisation has connected people everywhere and we are looking for opportunities to work with content providers from all over the world. Chokchai Punjarungroj CEO Amarin Television Co Ltd, Thaiand

The first film will hit cinemas in late 2015, and the sequel during Chinese New Year in 2016. Starting from Singapore’s independence in 1965, the movie will bring audiences through history in a story that covers the nation’s challenges, celebrations and progress in the past 50 years.
“I want to tell our story from 1965 – how we had to fight for survival on our own after separating from Malaysia, how that changed our lives, the challenges we faced, and how we’ve arrived at where we are today,” he continued. “The story will also show how we’ve progressed from speaking dialects in kampongs, to a society that communicates primarily in English and Mandarin.”

AZTECA PRESENTS SPANISH PORTFOLIO Azteca is showcasing new Spanish-language TV programming for the international market at ATF. Hit telenovela A Love To Remember (Siempre Tuya … Acapulco) is directed by Elisa Salinas and produced by Rita Fusaro. It is a story of wickedness, greed, selfishness and a series of injustices propelling a heroine to fight for the love of her life. Azteca will also be presenting telenovelas Asi En El Barrio Como En El Cielo and Un Escenario Para El Amor. Asi En El Barrio Como En El Cielo tells the story of an immensely wealthy family who become poor and a moderately poor family who become millionaires overnight. Un Escenario Para El Amor, meanwhile, is a story of love and deceit, starring Erick Chapa, Gloria Stalina and Betty Monroe.
Rounding off Azteca’s slate of programmes are the reality and entertainment format I’m Your Double (Soy Tu Doble) and the comedy series The Man Of Your Dreams (El Hombre De Tus Sueños). “The demand for drama is on a high, but finding the know-how to actually keep the audience interested every day is a challenge,” said Khairul Anwar Salleh, vice president of the Malay Segment Content Management Group at Astro. “That’s why we collaborated with Azteca, because they know how to. This collaboration does not stop at production only, but we also sent our team to Mexico to understand the programming side of things.”
The Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA), a non-profit organisation for media content producers, is collaborating with Australia-based crowd-funding portal Pozible. Through this alliance, Pozible provides SAAVA members with additional privileges, including lower fees and special marketing efforts for creative projects. “Production costs are quite low in our region, and the amounts that can be raised from crowd-funding can become quite significant in comparison to the budget,” said Singapore-based producer and co-founder of SAAVA, Justin Deimen of Advent Media Group. “There are so many amazing stories in Southeast Asia that needs to be told, and we hope this collaboration with Pozible encourages the creation of many new films.” SAAVA has also formed an alliance with the Motion Picture Association of Cambodia (MPAC), enabling producers, directors, talents, distributors and exhibitors in the kingdom to become SAAVA members. The two associations are planning joint workshops and fostering more co-productions between the countries. SAAVA is also helping to set up a film institute in Phnom Penh. Meanwhile, co-founder of SAAVA Chan Gin Kai, and American producer Ross Campbell, have agreed to co-produce an English language feature film titled The 100 Yards. The film is a sports-themed drama targeted at the growing international demand for faith-based and impact content.

GREAT MINDS SHARE CHU YU-NING: THE MAN BEHIND THE DRAMA
(From left) Jeffrey Merrihue, CEO and co-founder of MOFILM; Jon Landau, Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe winning producer; Vivek Rampal, global director of BP Castrol
BRANDED CONTENT AND THE POWER OF STORYTELLING An engaging discussion among a panel of three industry heavyweights shed light and some laughter on the subject of branded content, a topic of increasing relevance and interest to many brands today. Building brands has always been about creating content and distributing it, said Vivek Rampal, BP Castrol’s global director, who is responsible for marketing at Passenger Car Oils, a USD9 billion business operating directly in 45 countries. Today, brands can no longer simply opt for one singular way of creating and distributing content. Rampal added that what brands really need to have today is an engagement strategy, one that involves identifying their target audience, talking to them, and finding out what interests them before deciding what kind of content to create.
To contextualise these developments, Jeffrey Merrihue, CEO and co-founder of MOFILM, pointed to the paradigm shift among younger millennial audiences. Besides moving their consumption of media from television to other devices and portable platforms, there is also a greater degree of audience fragmentation as viewers are now able to choose what they watch. This has had an impact on the pattern of content distribution as well as the types of content produced. No stranger to the creation of exceptional content, Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe winning producer, Jon Landau, said that it is about evoking an emotional response from the audience through storytelling, and creating interest and loyalty as a result. This applies to both film and branded entertainment. Looking ahead, Merrihue said that the next ten years will see the production of longer content and less conventional advertisements as the nature of branding evolves to become less intrusive, with stories well told as the way to go.

The importance of evolving to stay relevant was underscored during Taiwanese director Chu Yu-Ning’s session yesterday. He makes it a point to immerse himself in a wide variety of experiences, and some of his successful dramas resemble his relationships. “I think my relationships are similar to those of Li Da Ren, the male lead in In Time With You,” he said. “Many of my female friends like confiding in me, especially about their love lives. On the eve of her wedding, one of my close female friends told me she would call off her wedding if I said I wanted to marry her!” As someone who always thinks he can do better, Chu attempts different styles with each project he undertakes. His wildly popular ‘idol dramas’ have won multiple Golden Bell Awards. To build on the success of Taiwanese idol dramas, he believes there is a need for creativity to invigorate the industry with fresh and appealing content.

FILMMAKING FOR THE NEW GLOBAL AUDIENCE Jon Landau, Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe winning producer, holds the distinction of having produced the two highest grossing movies of all time, Titanic and Avatar, as well as a string of major blockbusters. Growing up around movies, he understands the power of a good story well told and the thrill of engaging and immersing the global audience. What was the most valuable advice that you have inherited from your family?
that speak to everyone, not just the North American audiences.
than they thought it would be, they would really have a great time.
Their emphasis was always on-thescript and story. Often, people get caught up with the technology, visual effects and location. Movies are about people and stories. That is what I’ve learnt from my parents.
What are the other constraints?
Can you share a little about your upcoming projects?
How has the industry changed since Titanic and Avatar? The industry has changed in the way movies are made. In Titanic, we built the set and the ship. It was 800 feet long. Today, just like when we did Avatar, [any story is possible using advanced digital technologies]. They unlock imagination. Whatever people take up can probably be accomplished with visual effects and that is a very exciting prospect. Secondly, you now [have a multitude of competing] distribution avenues that include the internet, Youtube and Netflix. While that is a challenge for some, it is also a great opportunity for many others. What are the new challenges that you, as a film producer, face today? We are dependent more and more on an international marketplace. We need to make movies with themes
We have financial responsibilities as filmmakers; we have to be respectful of costs. But over time, as technology costs continue to come down, we will have a more successful run at it. The ultimate constraint in any movie is budget. Hollywood films are increasingly being co-produced in Asia to tap on emerging markets. Is this trend here to stay and do you have plans for international co-production in the region? The trend is here to stay and it speaks to how you not only rely on international business or the box office but also opportunities in production. I would love to find the right picture to do a co-production. How would you define a successful production? A successful production is one that exceeds the audiences’ expectations. It is for an audience to go to the movies and go, “Boy, I had a good time!” If they expected the movie to be great, and it turns out even better
We are doing three Avatar sequels that we’re very excited about. We have Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang all coming back to join us in the cast and we look forward to taking people on a new journey back to Pandora. Finally, do you have any words of wisdom for young directors or producers out there? Technology has made filmmaking possible for anybody. We can make movies today with our mobile phones and our cameras. We can edit them on our computers. The best thing for aspiring filmmakers to do is to go out there to make movies. But where people make a mistake is to show their movies to a very small circle of people who don’t necessarily give them honest feedback. So, to make movies, show them to as many people as you can and get their responses. And only in doing that will you really know how you are doing on your film. You have to hear what they are saying so you can make your own creative choices.

IN THE THICK OF ANIMATION No stranger to the field of content creation, Tom Beattie has worn many hats over the span of his career, working on all of Tiger Aspect Production’s kids programming output from development to delivery. His notable projects include Mr Bean: The Animated Series (winner of multiple BAFTA Awards), Charlie and Lola, and Bosom Pals. Growing up on television classics like Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo and Bananaman, Beattie has the enviable dream job as head of Animation and Children’s Programming at Tiger Aspect Production, an Endemol Company and one of the UK’s most successful and prolific independent television producers. “I love the UK animated series called Bananaman,” he says. “For me, it was funny and an achievable superhero. It was even ahead of its time for promoting healthy eating!” Beattie’s first job in the industry was as a runner. He had started in commercials and pop video live action production and went on to take an extensive range of roles including assistant director, production coordinator, line producer and head of production, Along the way, he moved from advertising and liveaction film production to animation. “I have always had a passion for animation,” he says. “[I love] the endless possibilities that [one] can achieve with animation and the challenge to create those endless possibilities on schedule and budget.” Working with a large crew on longer projects also appealed to him. While Tiger Aspect has created some of the most iconic animation and children programmes, Beattie insists that there is no formula. “If there was, we’d all be very rich. You’ve just got to work on programmes that you believe in, and are passionate about,” he says. “It’s a long road and you can’t create and produce shows for the wrong reasons.” This principle guided the idea of turning the Mr Bean life-action programme into an animated series. “Mr Bean live action
Mr Bean Series 2 (Tiger Aspect Production)
was – and is – a popular show worldwide,” Beattie explains. “Tiger Aspect wanted to give it longevity and offer the fans new content. An animated series was a natural progression… for this, we needed a quality of animation to show [Mr Bean’s] facial and body expression.” Beattie finds that the best part of what he does is the opportunity to work on various aspects of many different projects as well as the chance to meet and work with people from varying disciplines such as illustrators, publishers, voice artists and actors. Looking ahead, Beattie sees growth in “short-form content that doesn’t stick to the very specific restraints of TV schedules” driven by the fact that kids are now consuming content in short bursts on many different platforms.
On the other hand, “it’s easier than ever before for people to create, animate and publish online,” he adds. Even aspiring creators can now bypass the usual routes to deliver more home-grown content and original programming to an audience. Beattie also highlights the implementation of a government tax break, which has widened the window of possibilities for UK’s animation industry. “Hopefully we can retain talent and continue to create more home-grown quality programmes for a worldwide audience.”

DAY 02 FEATURES
FEATURES THE ASIAN DIGITAL SPACE: WHO’S DOING WHAT IN ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT Today’s entertainment industry may have been fragmented by technology-enabled delivery choices – terrestrial broadcasters’ digital transmissions via cable, satellite or over-the-air; IPTV over dedicated networks; and over-the-top (OTT) streaming over public internet. Yet, regardless of the delivery platform, network or even the viewer’s screen, content itself remains a key success factor, especially in the evolving online entertainment space. This is an area where global OTT players like Hulu, Netflix and YouTube have made great strides, investing considerably in both the quality and quantity of content. In the last few months alone, Netflix has announced or launched exclusive or original content ranging from kids shows to animated series, and from documentaries to dramas, through a slew of partnerships with content creators. Earlier this year, Netflix raked in four Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, and three wins for documentary The Square. Orange is the New Black (Lionsgate Television)
AGAINST THE OTTS “We work alongside some of the most inspired and uncompromising visionaries in Hollywood,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix, at the awards presentation. A case in point is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, the sequel to the acclaimed Lee Ang martial arts epic, which will premiere online exclusively on Netflix next year. Renowned martial arts choreographer and director Yuen Woo Ping will direct the film, which stars Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Yu Shu Lien, and Donnie Yen.
Asian OTT players have been equally busy. China-based iQiyi plans to buy distribution rights to more than 1,000 US movie titles in 2015. “American movies are hugely popular in China,” says the internet and mobile video service provider’s CEO Yu Gong. “This summer, US films overtook Chinese and other international titles to become the most popular titles for paying viewers on iQiyi’s platform.” Significantly, iQiyi launched its in-house film production studio in July and plans to co-produce up to eight films this year. In addition, the Baidu subsidiary is already working on nearly 30 TV shows with several major studios.
Yu describes how iQiyi Pictures will harness internet-based operations such as crowdfunding, film data research, online ticket booking and e-commerce services. This is a step up from traditional film companies that typically just run production, distribution and promotion functions. Another Chinese OTT giant, Youku Tudou, has set up Heyi Film, its movie production and investment arm. Heyi is working with major production companies to co-produce films for both online and cinema distribution, funding new filmmakers and bringing online hits to the big screen. These initiatives include nine ‘internet movies’ each year.

The quest for original content has also landed Youku Tudou the exclusive rights from Talpa Holding to produce The Voice Kids format in China, adding to its 30 shows and 500 episodes of original content.
content and popularity throughout Asia. On the other hand, Kim Young-gook, managing director of KBS Global Hallyu Centre, noted the important role of online media in helping KBS to promote and deliver its content to a global audience.
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
Ultimately, digital copyrights and online broadcasting rights to popular content hold the key to profits. An online video industry insider in China told English language newspaper Global Times early this year that acquiring copyrights to programmes can account for as much as 60% of spending on new video content.
“Customised content in the emerging online entertainment industry is vitally important to our continued leadership in the internet television space,” says Sunny Zhu Xiangyang, Youku Tudou’s chief content officer. “Creating a multi-screen entertainment ecosystem is one of our most important strategic initiatives.” The OTT channels’ quest for differentiated programming underscores the gradual dovetailing of their roles with those of traditional pay-TV operators and terrestrial broadcasters. For instance, YouTube’s head of Partnership & Operations, Gautam Anand, recently proposed cooperation with Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) to “develop creative content delivery strategies that diversify TV content for online audiences”. Partners since 2011, YouTube has benefited from KBS World’s quality
Even then, it is difficult for online platforms bidding for the same shows to stand out or build a loyal viewer base. This explains the decision by Hunan Satellite TV – owner of a vast store of production and copyright assets – to stop selling broadcasting rights to online video sites and rely on its Hunantv.com internet platform to broadcast its shows. “Hunantv.com has built an entertainment product line that integrates news, online video, social networking, online games and wireless value-added services across internet, mobile and digital TV platforms, with four flagship products – Mango Entertainment, Mango TV, Mango World and Mango Games,” says Zhang Ruobo, president, general manager and CEO of Hunantv.com. The Mango
TV platform alone is eyeing turnover of RMB2.4 billion in 2016, a whopping 458% increase over 2014 revenues. Hunan Satellite TV itself co-produced the just-concluded second season of Youku Tudou’s popular web comedy series Surprise to leverage the internet TV company’s online influence. In his opening keynote at ATF 2013, Youku Tudou’s Zhu shared how his company “went through big data analysis and chose the most successful production team and the best comedy title to create a very successful branded programme. The first season of Surprise hit 300 million views and the average views per episode was 23 million.” This year, Youku Tudou invested RMB300 million (USD48 million) in its own productions, co-productions as well as user-generated content. It is developing a multi-screen strategy; diversifying its revenue streams and services; and producing differentiated content. “Based on our understanding of the audience, we are [showing] a series of popular programmes such as comedies, TV series, micro-movies and variety shows. That is where our investments will be,” Zhu added.

FEATURES
Are You Normal? (Tencent with All3Media International)
NEW KIDS WITH BYTE Apart from familiar names in the broadcast, IPTV and OTT sectors, tech giants are also entering the online fray – a natural progression from their success in other internet sectors. For example, Samsung has launched its Seasons video-on-demand (VOD) app in Malaysia and the Philippines. The app delivers TV drama content to viewers’ smart TV or other Samsung mobile devices. Popular drama series available on the service include Orphan Black, Misfits, Call the Midwife and Doll & Em. Another prominent tech company, SoftBank Internet and Media Inc (SIMI) is acquiring online video portal DramaFever, which has negotiated deals to select premium content from more than 70 major broadcasters and distributors worldwide. These often include exclusivity rights and same-day or next-day distribution. “In five short years since going live, DramaFever has built an impressive internet-based streaming video business operating at scale,” says Nikesh Arora, vice chairman of SoftBank Corp and CEO of SIMI, who plans to bring DramaFever’s video content to an even larger global audience. “This is a [triumph] for our content partners who have demonstrated that engaging stories and characters transcend languages and borders,” says DramaFever’s co-founder and co-CEO, Suk Park.
Meanwhile, Tencent, owner of QQ.com and WeChat, will produce and broadcast the Chinese version of All3Media’s factual entertainment format Are You Normal? Series 2 in 2015, having tasted success with the format’s debut this year along with a related social platform app.
company has acquired SnappyTV’s technology to enable content partners – TV broadcasters, businesses, and event producers – to inject the best video content into real-time conversations directly from the TV to the user’s mobile device.
As a VOD service, Tencent is expanding its web empire by producing original content and pursuing opportunities in China’s flourishing video streaming industry.
“The rise of Twitter as the default second screen was driven by television audiences,” says Tony Broderick, head of TV Partnerships for Twitter Australia. “Having worked on shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, I saw first hand and on a daily basis the way that audiences naturally gravitated towards Twitter to discuss what they were watching. And this makes sense due to the fact that Twitter is live, public, conversational.”
“Are You Normal? Series 1 proved to be a huge success in 2014, and received 330 million views and 114 million unique viewers, a record for a VOD-produced programme in China,” says Benny Luo, deputy creative director of Tencent’s online video department. “Due to this massive success, for Series 2, we won’t be making much changes to the format, except to design a set and visual identity that is even younger, fresher, cooler than in Series 1.”
SOCIAL CONNECTIONS “Tencent’s input in the interactive activity in China [with the social media app] was invaluable and really proved the appeal of this survey-based show,” says Sabrina Duguet, senior vice president of International Format Sales at UKbased All3Media International. The growing popularity of social media as an interactive complement to TV programming has not escaped Twitter’s attention either. The
Clearly, no single company can fully serve the diverse needs of audiences who not only demand a variety of content but also expect a good and engaging viewing experience anytime, anywhere, and from different devices. Youku.com president Wei Ming sums up a sensible plan. “We are integrating unique content with animation, games, live interactive features and other services to create a holistic offline to online entertainment experience for our viewers,” he says. “Via traditional TV programming combined with the internet, we are continuing to promote an entirely new industry chain that will redefine [the] online entertainment space.”

DAY 02 FEATURES
FEATURES KIDS CO-PRODUCTIONS WITH ASIAN PARTNERS
Asian companies are playing an increasingly important role in putting together international kids co-productions, writes Andy Fry.
NHK’s ongoing alliance with Qatar-based children’s channel JCC; Zodiak Kids’ partnership with Korea’s FunnyFlux on Tickety Toc; DQ Entertainment’s work with ZDF Enterprises on Jungle Book; and Scrawl Studios’ association with Francebased Cyber Group Studios on Zou are just a few examples in recent years. Malaysian studio Inspidea has also been busy, popping up on projects like Pet Squad, a production in partnership with the UK and Canada. But what does it take for a kids coproduction between East and West to really fly? “We’ve worked with partners in markets like Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and India,” says Steve DeNure, president and COO of DHX Media. “We have a huge goodwill and curiosity regarding Asia because of the amazing studios and great skill sets in the region. One of the most interesting projects we’ve worked on recently is SheZow, an Australia-Malaysia-US animation co-pro that we distributed.”
SheZow (DHX Media)
DAY 02 FEATURES 29
DeNure believes that the key to getting an East-West co-pro right is “choosing the right project and then finding a way to blend the two creative sensibilities. If your ambition is to have global success, you’re probably looking at design and animation being done in Asia and script and storyboards in North America. The global market is now very used to North American pacing.” As a follow-up to Zou, Cyber Group Studios is working with Asian partners on Mia, a CGI pre-school project based on a software character from Kutoka Interactive. “This involves Spacetoon in the Middle East and LAlune Studios in Malaysia and India,” says Pierre Sissman, CEO of the company.
Pet Squad (Inspidea)
For him, a key point is to make sure the production process is 100% secure. “Work closely with the original producer using the same technical pipe to avoid any production issues,” he says. For Cake Entertainment CEO Tom Van Waveren, a number of things go into ensuring a successful co-production, most of which are applicable to any combination of nationalities. “From the outset, make sure the different commissioning editors are expecting the same show,” says Waveren, who has been involved with Bottersnikes and Gumbles, a co-pro involving the UK, Australia, and the Hong Kong subsidiary of a US company. “I’ve seen co-pros go wrong because different channels expect the show to appeal to different ages. I also think it’s important to work with companies that are similar in size and culture. If one company is trying to build a brand and the other is just trying to push through production quickly, things can go wrong.”
Tickety Toc (FunnyFlux)
In terms of what Asian partners bring, Reitg adds, “Historically it was manpower but now it’s transmedia expertise… apps and games. Countries like Singapore and Malaysia are also bringing investment. They are definitely becoming central players.”
Zou (Cyber Group Studios)
Finally, he echoes Sissman when he stresses the importance of communication. “Often you have a number of executives involved who don’t have English as their first language. So if you get an email that surprises you, don’t get annoyed. Just pick up the phone and you’ll probably find it’s all fine.” Like his peers, Imira Entertainment’s Barcelona-based co-pro specialist Sergi Reitg, also stresses communication: “I recommend several business trips both ways. Different countries organise in different ways and both sides need to understand that.”
“The key is making sure everyone understands the different business models,” says Reitg. “We have worked with DQ Entertainment in India on projects like Escape Hockey and we have another couple of projects in development with Asian partners. Canada and Europe have a lot of regulations that Asian partners need to be aware of. If you get that piece of the puzzle in place, it’s a great experience.”
Escape Hockey (Imira Entertainment)
Even then, DeNure is keeping commercial expectations in perspective: “It’s hugely competitive out there. So even if the creative process goes well, you’re not guaranteed huge returns internationally. I think unrealistic expectations about ROI is the single most difficult thing about many co-pros.”
