Co-productions are the flavour of the moment in uS-Chinese film industry relations. There are major initiatives by China’s largest film companies to break into Hollywood and the English-language film market. At the same time Hollywood studios and uS independents alike are looking to China as one of the last growth markets for theatrical audiences. They alas see China as a source of production finance. However, the last months have delivered a succession of reality checks, not least of which has been a stern reminder from Chinese authorities that there needs to be more Chinese involvement in co-productions. Yesterday, the cast met with the press. giving nods to the film’s authenticity, Yu Dong, CEO and Founder, Bona Film group, said “This is China’s first movie on triads and everyone should give it a watch.”

Director wong jing added, “This movie is very different from the comedies I have always directed. when I direct comedies, my viewers are happy, but not exactly myself. This movie allows me and the viewers to be serious together and feel the movie together.”

Also confident of the film’s impact, producer Andrew Lau added, “As long as I put my heart to any movie, it can be something big and powerful.”

movING BItS BrINGS StorIES From INSIDE CHINA Singapore-based project studio, Moving Bits is currently working on The Eagle and the Dragon: Stories from Inside China.

A six-part factual series targeted for broadcast in fall 2013 in the uS, it is being developed together with America’s PBS and China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC).

Described by Smithsonian Channel as “one of the world’s best non-fiction producers telling today’s most compelling stories”, Moving Bits produced the documentary Chilean Mine Rescue, that incorporated interviews, ‘live’ shoots and CgI to tell the story.

Released in October 2011, it went on to win major awards, including Silver in the 2012 International TV & Film Awards of the New York Festival, an Award of Excellence in the 2012 Videographer Awards, and a CINE golden Eagle.

MirriAd PArtNErS WItH WHISPEr mEDIA to oFFEr DIGItAL BrAND INtEGrAtIoN IN SoUtHEASt ASIA with an increased interest in digital branded entertainment solutions across the region, uK-based media technology company MirriAd, together with their exclusive in-region partner, whisper Media, have announced the expansion of Digital Brand Integration services covering local and regional productions in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. whisper Media has commenced operations in jakarta and delivered broadcast campaigns in Indonesia. They will also be setting up additional operating offices in several other Southeast Asian markets to develop the digital brand integration business amongst key broadcasters and content producers in the region.

Since MirriAd appointed whisper Media, partnerships have already been in place with three of the region’s biggest broadcasters, Astro in Malaysia, SCTV in Indonesia, and Mediacorp in Singapore.

While I don’t think the family TV set is going away anytime soon, I do believe we are moving towards non-linear viewing (be it via TV set, computer, or handheld) becoming more dominant than linear viewing. I was making a presentation a couple of weeks ago to an aspiring young group of TV producers, and one of them asked, “What is Free TV?”.

In attempting to answer this question, I realised the separation simply isn’t that clear anymore.

In China, the new viewing trend for programmes online and on-demand has allowed foreign programmes, which are harder to get on television due to broadcast restrictions, a solid destination. As a result of this, Nelvana’s sales revenues in China this year are up considerably compared to last year.

Sanford Panitch, President, Fox International Productions , acknowledged the new exchanges and trends in content as he gave the opening keynote address at the pre-market conference yesterday.

Mr Panitch said an increasing reliance on technology by Asian consumers is an opportunity that is two-fold leading to more

cinema screens being built across the region and more having access to Hollywoodimported and local films. Mr Panitch added Asia’s contribution to the international box office market in Asia in 2010 was uS$8.8b seeing a rise to uS$9.5b in 2011. This in contrast was significantly more than the global international market output which was uS$12.2b in 2010 and uS$13.2b in 2011.

Despite the optimistic outlook, Mr Panitch said intellectual property piracy is a major hurdle to the momentum of growth in Asia. He added that it is critical to reinforce intellectual property laws as more Asian consumers continue to gain access to the Internet.

Similarly, Mr Panitch foresees growth of the digital platform. He said this will provide

unscripted shows like Amazing Race, Pawn Star and Survivor will continue to rule the small screens, said a senior programming executive at the ATF conference yesterday.

“Phenomenal success of such shows has led to a rise of a whole new genre and have become one of the most sought-after formats today among the international broadcasters,” said Christian Murphy, Senior Vice President,

International Programming & Marketing, A+E Networks, uSA. Mr Murphy added that the success behind such shows includes “original stories, authentic characters and human emotions [that] can easily relate to viewers from any corner of the world.”

more opportunities for consumer access to both home and out-of-home entertainment in emerging markets.

More players are trying to maximise Asia’s massive potential as they attempt to fill existing niches for Asian television channels.

Be it localisation of a mega-hit series or

creating a new series for an Asian audience, international channel operators will have to keep in mind the cultural diversity within Asia.

Additional challenges include deploying digital media to reach a wider range of audiences and creating content with universal appeal. “There is a huge competition, as media landscape has become complex.

Overcoming this challenge will depend on how effectively and innovatively packaged the programme is, [how it engages] the customers and delivering it to them,” he added.

A+E Networks also announced it is expanding its operations in Southeast Asia through a new joint venture with a media partner.

The uS media group is looking east to fund marketable productions with a global appeal.

BIG BrAND tHEorY Consumers are looking for feel-good, “fuzzy” entertainment according to The Thread, a study conducted by Starcom Mediavest group (SMg).

Silvia goh, Chief Content Curator of LiquidThread, a division of SMg revealed that the company had conducted an indepth study across 45 markets in top-tier cities. According to the study, consumers are looking for feel-good and useful entertainment. Surprisingly, as much as Chinese consumers enjoy watching Korean shows, it was also reported that they were not fans of tearjerkers.

The Thread also highlighted how programmes needed more personality and need to keep up to speed with social marketing. In China that means having a significant presence on weibo and weixin, not Facebook or Twitter.

Ms goh also talked about the Yangtze Study , a research effort that offers real insights into Chinese consumers in lower-tier cities across the country. A key takeaway from the research revealed that even lower-tier city consumers, not usually influenced by big brands, were influenced by the power of

branded entertainment; when the audience saw the content, they were induced to try it.

Ms goh is optimistic about the untapped potential and growing innovation of Asian content. Mr Cebulski began to show the latest trailer for Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black. He went on to unveil news of the movie arriving in Singapore early on 25 April 2013. judging by the response to the trailer, it will be worth the short wait!

tHE CoNtENt DIFFErENtIAtor New and established TV stations, globalTV Indonesia and South Korea’s Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) have been amassing viewership in their respective markets, thanks in part to content innovation. New kid on the block, globalTV has taken familiar formats in drama series and turned them into fresh offerings for viewers. MBC took things a step further, by strengthening its core assets in drama production and having the foresight to implement cultural distribution strategies that have raked returns beyond its home soil. globalTV Indonesia belongs to its parent corporation, MNC group. Together, the media conglomerate provides content for 40% of the country’s TV viewers. David Fernando Audy, President Director for globalTV Indonesia said the success of MNC group’s free-to-air channels has always been “their capability to air quality drama series.” The channel is also developing new interesting content including Indonesian Idol, Master Chef and Indonesian X-Factor. with humble beginnings as a small private TV station in jakarta, globalTV had its finger on the pulse in identifying the commercial appeal of sports entertainment.

After expanding to five other cities, the Indonesian broadcaster cooperated with its sister network to introduce international car racing championship, Formula 1, to Indonesian audiences. As viewership for the car races grew, so did the channel’s confidence to pursue exclusive deals for rights to football matches. globalTV pays high premiums to put sports content on free-to-air channels rather than the more profitable Pay-TV. Mr Audy said massfriendly content such as soccer is the “second biggest religion in the country”. He said restricting free-to-air TV viewers from access to such content by putting it on PayTV will cause many of its viewers to protest.

Apart from sports programmes, viewers around the world are lapping up Hallyu or Korean pop culture in the form of slick dancing teenybopper series and stunning period dramas. Since the start of the millennium, MBC made a mark in the Hallyu or Korean wave by airing period drama, Jewel in the Palace or Dae Jang Geum. After more than a decade, nothing has taken the shine away from Jewel in the Palace as it remains one of MBC’s most loved serials at home and abroad. One way the broadcaster is taking its dramas global is through the digital platform. This year, MBC collaborated with online video viewing portal, YouTube, to offer Hallyu fans access to never-seenbefore online Korean content. Ahn Taeg Ho, Managing Director of Future Strategy at MBC said, “going digital is the best tool to reach international consumers.”

Apart from successfully going digital, one of the biggest draws of Hallyu is “the culture” embedded in those media products. MBC and other major Korean networks are aware this is important to generating buzz and cultivating audiences overseas, especially by showcasing Korean talent in familiar settings non-Korean audiences can relate to. Regardless of the genre, both MBC and globalTV do not have to travel too far to discover new content. Their focus is on reworking existing content they have and remodelling it according to how on-trend and exportable it is.

Cho Hyo jin, Producer of Seoul Broadcasting Corporation (SBS), the network that has been airing the show in its Sunday evening primetime slot, revealed that the show allows room for creative expression by allowing participants to improvise or adapt their own theme in each episode. Also the concept of the show changes accordingly when there are guest stars introduced or if the episode is shot abroad or in a new setting.

Mr Cho said, “For example, we made a show with international footballer Park ji Sung, which was entirely based on football.”

Mr Cho also said that the use of multiple emcees with different backgrounds has also helped to make the show appealing, as they bring a multitude of personalities to the show.

For an international audience, he said that Running Man emphasises on entertainment values through games and the cast’s own experiences and dreams.

He credited the critical success of the show to crew members and their quick decision-making ability that allowed them to keep things moving despite hectic production timelines. Mr Cho added that “[Running Man] is a surrealistic game in the real world.”

High ratings and mass acclaim of the show have caught the attention of broadcasters elsewhere too, and the rights to air the show have already been sold to 11 Asian countries, including China, japan and Singapore.

Episodes have also been remarkable for gueststarring jackie Chan as a mission-giver, along with Korean starlets jung Yong-hwa and Lee Min-jung, who showed off their skiing skills.

Entering the China market today is all about having the right skills, not by force, according to Rebecca Yang, CEO, International Programme Content Network (IPCN). The firm that is also China’s number one format distributor, re-established the formatlicence market in China and acted as the inspiration behind two of the most popular shows: China’s Got Talent and The Voice of China.

Apart from creating a well-marketed product that suits the Chinese audience, Ms Yang said it is crucial to have an enduring and trusting relationship with one’s business partners. She cautions that media and entertainment companies should not challenge the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT)’s intelligence or its patience. She said, “If a format does not work, be honest and give up. “

Ms Yang warns that China is a market that must be taken seriously. From an investment point of view, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the media sector demonstrates significant opportunities.

Ms Yang is among the first in the industry to admit that IPCN is still learning about content deal-making, citing The Voice of China as an example, as it took 18 months to seal that particular deal.

Moreover, the TV market has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years, with broadcast revenue increasing from uS$10b in 2004 to uS$33b in 2010.

The neW PlaYer with over 72 hours of content being uploaded onto YouTube every minute, it seems television now has a thousand faces. Available 24/7, and often at little or no cost, television’s many faces are exploring new ground with the help of cable providers and satellite TV operators, Internet Protocol television (IPTVs) and naturally, YouTube. just five years ago, plasma TVs and 3D TVs were the craze but today many are hankering for the convenience of mobility.

Audiences these days may view content on traditional TV, but discover or consume more of it on YouTube.

According to Ms guthrie, google is working with film companies to introduce a ‘movie rental’ model that will allow YouTube viewers to rent and view movies. She shared how YouTube aspires to be a multi-dimensional video platform for hosting and repurposing all kinds of content.

Technology companies like google need to find innovative ways to break into the content market with new monetising solutions.

The Internet has and will continue to change every segment of television from content and services to network and devices. However, the future of television will lie in the hands of those who can reinvent the wheel to understand the business of next-generation TV, and not just the technology of it.

A BLASt From tHE PASt, HErE to StAY Branded entertainment arrived in the 1950s, when many TV programmes, especially soap operas, were sponsored. However, when the 30-second TV commercial took off, branded entertainment took a backseat for over 40 years, only making a comeback in the late 90s.

And what a comeback it has been!

“Today, the practice of branded entertainment has since evolved to become a mixture of product placement (like Coke on American Idol), media integration deals (watch any episode of Top Chef) and digital bits, many with celebrities reinventing themselves through the web,” said Mike wiese, Director of Branded Entertainment at jwT New York, in an article he wrote for Forbes. From basic sponsorships to sophisticated, seamless integration of products within a programme, branded

entertainment can now be found in all its stripes, across all media platforms – broadcast, films, games and also online.

In addition, with the introduction of a separate Branded Content and Entertainment category at the Cannes Lions Awards, as well as the inauguration of the Australasian Branded Entertainment Awards, both earlier this year, it is perhaps safe to say that the time for branded entertainment has come.

QUALItY IS kEY As branded entertainment evolves, one thing we can be sure of is that quality is key. In this respect, Asia has stepped up to the challenge, producing not only effective but also award-winning content. Take for example Bacardi’s win at the Cannes Lions awards this year.

Created for Dewar’s, Bacardi’s blended scotch-whisky brand, The Dewarists is a musical television series that is part music documentary and part travelogue. The show features musicians from around the world and from different musical genres, collaborating to create original music inspired by the location they have travelled to in India. with India’s strict regulations on promoting alcoholic brands through above-the-line communication, Bacardi was commended for taking the musical route to reach out to the audience. Praised for its storytelling and integrated approach, the show is a brand platform that celebrates the musical game-changers that embody Dewar’s brand philosophy of “some

things are just worth doing”. It is clear the audience definitely agrees. It enjoyed surging popularity in its first season and is currently in its wellreceived second season.

Other countries in Asia are also seeing truly creative branded entertainment content across varying platforms and with equal success.

For example, in Malaysia, Polident’s reality TV show, Kilauan Emas (Golden Shine) is indeed a shining example. Throwing away the usual mould, the denture brand created groundbreaking branded content that focussed on a singing contest exclusively for those 45 years old and above. Breaking through a shame barrier, the show demonstrated how denture wearers and their peers could sing with gusto. Tripling Polident’s sales, this campaign was recognised at the Asian Marketing Effectiveness Awards earlier this year.

In South Korea, an online “mockumentary”, True Origins Of Pizza, from Mr Pizza, the nation’s

largest pizza chain, went viral with more than two million views. Created to launch the pizza brand in the uS, it was a clever satire exploring the “true” origins of pizza, with fake experts. The clip was shared across social media and got picked up by hundreds of blogs and even respected news organisations like The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. Its momentum grew, online debates got heated and it was independently translated into several languages, spreading its reach. At last count, it had earned two million dollars of unpaid media and had a 1600% return on investment!

Over in Beijing, IBM had a big winner with Parallel Paths, a branded content film about two hungry-for-success salesmen climbing the corporate ladder. The film was cleverly thought out, subtly integrating IBM’s Lotus Notes throughout the story. Meant to revive a tired product, it worked. New leads went up by 30% and existing leads by over 260%. unsurprisingly, it took home a gold at the China Effie Awards 2012.

The IBM example is not the only one coming out of China. The fact that Starcom MediaVest group (SMg), one of the largest brand communication groups in the world, recently launched LiquidThread in China is perhaps testament to the potential there.

LiquidThread is the branded entertainment unit of SMg and it provides expert custom content solutions to their clients. According to Silvia goh, its chief content officer, branded entertainment has taken off at tremendous speed in China. “(I)n the last two years, branded entertainment has evolved from straight-in-yourface hard sell product placement to tasteful and seamless branded content integration. TVCs will never be replaced, but instead branded entertainment serves as a complement to emotionally engage the audience further, hence creating loyalty and a long tail in a marketing campaign”.

a heroine who, as a fresh graduate, landed a job in an international public relations agency. Their key client was Clear, a shampoo label.

In contrast, a recent successful campaign by johnnie walker, Yulu (Words of a Journey), took a documentary approach to tell the stories of 12 Chinese pioneers.

Displaying more depth than most such campaigns, it had a standout component – a strong digital media element that drove a socially-relevant conversation on what inspires people to “keep walking”. The involvement of one of China’s most popular and influential bloggers, Han Han, sealed the deal.

LiquidThread too has hit more than a few winners with its ongoing, successful collaboration with wrigley’s Doublemint. The latest is Doublemint The Sing-Off which was introduced in May this year. LiquidThread together

One example of a campaign that has a “long tail” would be Ugly Wudi.

Created by unilever in 2008, the show is China’s answer to the hit American TV series Ugly Betty. Despite its less than subtle product placements in the show, the series was a success, garnering over 73 million viewers on its opening night alone and leading to a 21% increase in brand awareness for Dove after the first season.

That success wrapped up after four seasons but almost immediately, unilever returned with Unbeatable, a drama created for their shampoo brand, Clear. with more subtle product integration, the show featured

The core value of branded entertainment lies in content. Do remember that content is still king! without a compelling story to be told, the audience will not be drawn to engage.”

Divorce can bring out the worst in people, sometimes leading them to do terrible, shocking things they never imagined they were capable of, including murder. One can’t help but wonder what went wrong and how the couple got to such an extreme point.

Throughout each episode we’ll watch our protagonists transition from being a happy couple “in love”, to a hostile one battling for the house, the kids, cold hard cash or alimony. As the relationship collapses, each episode uses interviews and reenactments to show how divorce can overwhelm a family to the extent that they become intertwined in a murder investigation. what the show asks are who killed whom and how did divorce drive this person to commit grisly, coldblooded murder?
