Flytipper is ordered to pay almost £1,700 after incident at allotments
Addison Lee becomes latest gig economy employers to lose in workers’ rights battle Private hire firm Addison Lee will not be permitted to appeal an Employment Tribunal’s decision that drivers are entitled to workers’ rights; the Court of Appeal has ruled today (Thursday). The decision was made in light of the recent Supreme Court judgment stating that Uber drivers, represented by law firm Leigh Day, are entitled to receive the national minimum wage and holiday pay. Addison Lee’s appeal to the Court of Appeal had been put on hold in anticipation of the Supreme Court judgment. Already, an Employment Tribunal in 2017 had found that a group of Addison Lee drivers were workers. This was upheld by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2018. Leigh Day, which represents more than 100 Addison Lee drivers, believes thousands of drivers could be entitled to an average of £10,000 in compensation. The private hire company, which provides services for well-known clients such as ITV, Sky and the BBC, will only be legally required to compensate those who have brought a claim. Addison Lee Driver David Bollard, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, said: “It’s not just the financial side, it’s also the recognition that the way they treat their workers isn’t right. “I worked for Addison Lee for more than four years and over that time the treatment of drivers seemed to get worse. “There’s a revolving door of drivers which means they don’t really care about you as individuals because you’re easily replaced.” Liana Wood, a solicitor in the employment team at Leigh Day, said:
AW Facts Did you know? 90% of the UK is within 4 hours of Birmingham
“This is a huge decision in favour of Addison Lee drivers and yet another blow to big firms operating in the gig economy. “Leigh Day has been fighting for workers’ rights on behalf of our clients for several years, so I’m delighted that the end is now finally in sight for these hard-working drivers who deserve to be treated fairly. “This decision follows hot on the heels of the landmark Uber judgment in the Supreme Court. At Leigh Day we hope that other companies with similar business models to Uber and Addison Lee recognise that they cannot continue to deny people basic rights such as holiday pay and the national minimum wage.” Leigh Day also represents clients from delivery company Stuart in a similar workers’ rights claim. In May 2018, a Stuart courier succeeded in a claim that he was a worker in the Employment Tribunal, with this decision upheld by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in December 2019. A hearing date in the Court of Appeal has been fixed for October 2021 after a further appeal by Stuart. As well as individual claimants, Leigh Day is also acting for some GMB members who drive for Addison Lee. Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser, said: “Addison Lee had ample opportunity to do the right thing by drivers and sit down and talk with GMB about ensuring their workers were treated within the law. They chose instead to pay lawyers to try and argue the impossible. “This judgment is not based just on law but good common sense and sends a further message to those who would continue to exploit workers through a bogus self-employment model. “GMB will assist our members in exposing the reality of the working relationship. “We urge Addison Lee to accept the various rulings of the court and sit down with GMB to discuss how improved conditions for drivers makes for a better workplace for all.” For more information or to join the Addison Lee claim visit leighday.co.uk/addisonlee-claim
A fly-tipper who dumped waste at the entrance to the Walsall Road Allotments in Perry Barr has been ordered to pay £1,691 by Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. Robert Casserley, aged 41, of Rivington Crescent, New Oscott, was prosecuted by Birmingham City Council for three offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, related to the incident on January 28 last year. The court heard that a security camera owned and operated by the allotment plotholders captured a man with a van attending the scene before the waste was then discovered. The van had a distinctive wheel and side mirror which indicated it was a Vauxhall Vivaro. Amongst the waste found at the site, which included broken furniture, plastic sheeting, wooden boards and a builder’s sized sack containing various items, were documents with an address at Rivington Crescent. A visit was then made by council investigators to that address – where a Vauxhall Vivaro was spotted and then seen again on a number of subsequent occasions. Casserley was identified as the registered keeper (and owner/user) of the van. As a consequence, he was contacted and sent two “Demand for Information” notices requesting details of the person in control of and driving the van on January 28 last year. Despite the demand being a legal request, he did not supply the requested information. As a result of signage being spotted on the vehicle advertising a “Fab Fencing” business, Casserley was also asked to provide copies of his commercial waste transfer notes and details of his waste disposal practices, again things the operator of a business is legally required to do when asked. Casserley responded to provide details of what he claimed he did with his waste but did not provide any waste transfer notes. When in court Casserley said he had pulled up to urinate and dropped some bags on top of rubbish that was already in the location. He said it was a one-off mistake. Despite his mitigation, in addition to a £833 fine he was ordered to pay £775 towards the council’s costs and an £83
victim surcharge. Robert James, Director of Neighbourhoods at Birmingham City Council, said: “This case shows that environmental crimes that harm our communities will not be tolerated and that when the council has evidence, it will not hesitate to seek prosecutions. “In this case it is clear an individual had no regard for their local area or the fact
their actions were placing a strain on public resources. “I hope it sends out a clear message to individuals and businesses that committing fly-tipping and related offences are risks not worth taking.” Anyone with any information on cases of fly-tipping is urged to contact www.birmingham.gov.uk/flytipping

BAME housing tops the agenda as West Yorkshire mayoral candidate visits Bradford
AMIR KHAN FRONT LINES SUPPORT FOR “FRIENDS IN INDIA” Two-time World Boxing Champion and Founder & Trustee of the foundation Amir Khan said,
“
I’m so pleased to be working in partnership with Dasra, One Family Global and our partner organisations on the ground to provide urgent support in India. The situation is critical – one person is dying every four minutes in New Delhi. It’s our duty to help our brothers and sisters in India in any way we can.”
“
Front page story cont’d... Amir Khan has launched an emergency fundraising appeal for the dire situation in India. The second-most populous country saw COVID-19 cases skyrocket last week, with over 350,000 cases recorded in 24 hours alone: an increase of 2 million+ cases in a single week. In partnership with Mumbai-based NGO network, Dasra, and UK-based charity, One Family Global, the Amir Khan Foundation has identified five partner organisations on the ground, who are working tirelessly to provide critical relief. The partner organisations – Swasti, SaveLIFE Foundation, Aajeevika Bureau, Swasth Foundation and Goonj – work across India’s major regions, including Bangalore, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Mumbai. Together, they offer crucial support in the form of hospital oxygen concentrators for hospitals; testing communities for co-morbidities; providing support to migrant communities; and delivering food and healthcare. Vishal Kapoor, from Dasra’s Strategic Philanthropy team, said, “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Amir Khan Foundation and are incredibly grateful to Amir and the foundation for their support. We’re also incredibly fortunate to have such amazing NGO partners stepping up and providing urgent relief to our most vulnerable communities at what is an incredibly difficult time for the whole country.” Chairman of One Family Global, Sharif Banna MBE, added, “The brutal effects of the pandemic that can be seen in India demand our urgent action. I am pleased to extend our support to the Amir Khan Foundation and Dasra in providing relief for those who need it most.” The foundation has launched a JustGiving page and is also accepting donations through their website, www. amirkhanfoundation.com. Founder and trustee, Amir Khan, who is currently fasting for Ramadan beseeched his social media following to not ignore this emergency. He added, “Ramadan is the month of mercy. If we are in the position to extend support to our friends in India when they need it most, then let us accept it as an opportunity from God to do better and be better.”
play our part in delivering the many additional affordable homes local communities here require. “The election of a West Yorkshire Mayor presents a gilt-edged opportunity to make progress on an issue that successive Governments in London have sadly failed to address.” Abdul A. Ravat, MHA Vice Chair, said: “I have known Tracy for some time and was delighted that she chose to visit MHA during her busy campaign. “I am a strong advocate for devolution which should lead to better informed decision-making and enhanced political accountability at a local level. “The directly-elected Mayor will be a powerful voice for West Yorkshire who can deliver real change and improve life chances in some of the most deprived parts of the region including Bradford and Keighley. “25 per cent of the community across West Yorkshire is BAME and in Bradford it is between 40 and 45 per cent.” The West Yorkshire mayoral election was on Thursday 6 May.
Tracy Brabin MP said:
“
Manningham Housing Association is one of the exemplars of how we support Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. It’s about larger properties and making sure that there is housing stock across Bradford – I know they have ambitions to widen out across West Yorkshire. This is work that’s very much on my radar, particularly as someone who grew up in social housing. I understand the value of a secure home and how you can then flourish, not worrying that you’re going to be made homeless at any moment.
“
Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin (front centre) with MHA staff and board members in Bradford
Senior representatives of Manningham Housing Association (MHA) have welcomed Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin to their Bradford head office to talk about the organisation’s work and her campaign to be West Yorkshire’s first directly-elected Mayor. MHA Chief Executive Lee Bloomfield and Vice Chair Abdul A. Ravat gave Ms Brabin a socially-distanced presentation outlining the history of MHA including its recent achievement in becoming the first housing association in the country to be officially accredited for its success in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. They also detailed examples of MHA’s commitment to local partnership working through its Community Investment Strategy and explained the proactive role it plays in tackling the unique challenges faced by its Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) residents. Founded in 1986, MHA manages more than 1,400 homes for over 6,000 tenants in Bradford and Keighley. Around 80 per cent of MHA tenants are of South Asian origin. Lee Bloomfield, MHA Chief Executive, said: “We have engaged with all of the mayoral candidates through our membership of the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership and it was a pleasure to meet Tracy, discuss our work and learn more about her policy ideas. “There is a major shortage of good quality affordable homes in Bradford and Keighley, with a particular need for more large family properties. “As a trusted and respected local housing provider, MHA is keen to

Mental Health Charity partners with Online Platform to connect people in Ramadan through education and charity “ Ramadan is a beautifully blessed month for all Muslims around the world. A month that is cherished, enjoyed and celebrated by millions as they invest their time, wealth and efforts into benefiting others and spiritually for themselves. A month that strongly highlights the value of charity, love and education. We at TMI wanted to make this Ramadan a great one to give the opportunity to all ages to study and connect with their faith that is arranged at timings that all members of the family can join. We wish all a blessed Ramadan this year.
“
Mental Health charity Supporting Humanity has partnered with Islamic Education platform Teach Me Islam to connect and give something back to people in the holy month of Ramadan. The pandemic has meant that Ramadan cannot be observed in the way it normally would be. Although it’s a time for people to self-reflect, pray and connect with their spirituality its also a time where traditionally people would prayer in congregation, get together for breaking their fast and come together socially. The lockdown has not entirely lifted, and people are still in fear of catching Covid19 so the charity Supporting Humanity decided that collaborating with An Islamic platform would be a great way to engage and support people in Ramadan. A ‘Virtual Ramadan’ is a series of workshops that will take place three times a week online. The sessions will be a mixture of Islamic Talks, Children’s stories, health and fitness whilst fasting, baking for iftar (breaking fast) as well as a crafty workshop which will be showing families how to make Eid cards and decorations.
Nabeela Raza, CEO of Teach Me Islam says of the collaboration CEO of Supporting Humanity Idris Patel says of the collaboration ‘Ramadan is a time for Muslims to spiritually connect as well
as remember the less fortunate and give to charity, but its also a time where families get together, the pandemic will make this very difficult this year for many
Muslims and we as a Mental Health charity want people to feel that there is something for the community to log into and be part of and not feel isolated. We are trying to make our Virtual Ramadan as inclusive as we can and there will be something for everyone to en-
joy and to take part in. A Virtual Ramadan will kick off on Friday 16th April and will run three times a week. The collaboration will rely on friends and family to share the link for people to log in and across their social media platforms.
Major restoration project in Parliament completed - by Wolverhampton-born stone mason The final piece in a massive jigsaw puzzle has been slotted into place in Parliament by a Wolverhampton-born stone mason, when the last of almost 60,000 brightly coloured encaustic floor tiles was laid in the middle of Central Lobby, one of the busiest and most recognisable locations in Westminster. It was overseen by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, and the Lord Speaker, Lord Fowler, and brings to an end 9 years of work to replace the historic tiled pavements. The final tile was laid by stone mason Andy Midwinter, who has been lead foreman on the project since 2013. “It’s been years and years of hard work to get to this point, alongside a great team here in Parliament’, he said. “But the final tile is now in place, so it really feels like the end of an era. “It’s a really special moment, because the tile is a one-off. A job like this comes with a real sense of pride, because you’re working in a historic place like the Palace of Westminster, and Speakers and Prime Ministers in decades to come are going to be walking over this floor that I’ve laid”. The word ‘encaustic’ is from the Greek meaning ‘burnt in’ and this method means that the pattern becomes part of the body of the tile, so the design remains for much longer than if it were applied to the surface. Some of the original tiles had been in place since the Palace of Westminster was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1834 and were designed by Augustus Welby Pugin. Many of them would have carried the footsteps of Churchill, Gladstone, Thatcher, and countless other political figures. But after 150 years many of the unique tiles were deteriorating, so the decision was taken to conserve or replace the pavements, before the unique designs and vivid colours were lost forever. The new encaustic tiles, which were made to match the original one inch / 25.4 mm thick tiles, were produced in a factory in Shropshire, by impressing a pattern into unfired clay to a shallow depth using a hand carved mould. The indentations are
then filled with a liquid clay of contrasting colour. All the encaustic tiles manufactured for the Palace of Westminster have been handmade, using some mechanisation in the process. They have been laid by specialist stone masons, and bedded in lime mortar to allow for the natural movement of the building. Due to the historic nature of the Palace of Westminster, with its uneven floors, the skills required to lay encaustic tiles are closer to those of a stone mason than a tile layer. They vary in style and include symbols like the shamrock, thistle, Tudor rose and dragon of St George, that represent different parts of the UK. There are also letter tiles with wording in French, Latin and English to commemorate Queen Victoria, who was the monarch at the time the Palace of Westminster was constructed. Central Lobby is at the very heart of Parliament, used by constituents to lobby their MPs and is one of the main thoroughfares between different areas of the building. It is also used by major national broadcasters for daily parliamentary news coverage and interviews. Due to the level of wear and tear, the central tile and its surrounding panels were removed back in 2015, to ensure the complex design could be replicated accurately before it wore away completely. The original tile, that used to sit in the middle of Central Lobby, will be displayed at the Jackfield Tile Museum, which is part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums in Shropshire, from next year. It will be exhibited from next year to coincide with the 150th
anniversary of Craven Dunnill Jackfield – who manufactured the new tiles. The key central tile is now in place, in time for the State Opening of Parliament on 11 May, where viewers across the world will see Mr Speaker and his procession walking across the tiled pavement, on the way to the House of Commons chamber, shortly to be followed by Black Rod, who will bang on the door to summon MPs to hear the Queen’s Speech. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons said: “What an achievement - replacing tens of thousands of these beautiful tiles and finishing the work during a pandemic. All those involved have done a brilliant job. The original encaustic tiles were made in the UK and the new tiles were produced here too. It just goes to show what fantastic skills and craftspeople we still have in this country. “The tiles are such an integral part of what makes this building such a special place, and they always catch my eye as I walk through Central Lobby to take my seat in the Speaker’s Chair. Having this final tile in place now really is the icing on the cake.” Lord Fowler, the Lord Speaker said: “I was first elected to Parliament over 50 years ago, so I’m one of generations of politicians who have walked the corridors here and worn the old tiles out! Long after I’m gone, these tiles will still be here, awaiting the footprints of Parliamentarians of the future. That’s a very humbling thought.”

The heARTivism Project CIC is a not for profit organisation based in Birmingham city centre. It was set up in 2021 by Sarah and Albert Wallace, directors of The Birmingham Contemporary Art Gallery, as a result of the different dynamics that played out in 2020, from George Floyd’s killing and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, to the national open discussions here in the UK regarding the need for institutional and structural reforms around race and inclusion. Albert Wallace says, “these reforms have long been needed within the cultural and creative sector and the focal
support comes from the most unexpected places and I’ve seen this during the current crisis in India. Birmingham is a multicultural, multi-ethnic, multilingual community and we love to celebrate its diversity in an inclusive way through the medium of art, music, education and entrepreneurism. The heARTivism Project is bringing the people and businesses of Birmingham together to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month and we hope to recognise
and celebrate some of the people who have made a difference to the lives of others in the West Midlands”. ‘Ramadan Kid’ Documenting His First Fast to Raise Funds
Tuesday 13th April marks the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month of the year for Muslims where billions will be donated to charitable causes across the world. A 2016 report by the Charity Commission estimated that UK muslims donated £100 million during Ramadan, working out at £8 per second. The amount donated in years since is likely to have risen, as charities like Human Appeal have helped more and more people both in the UK and abroad. In 2020 Human Appeal handed out over 4,500 food parcels to people in need and have their sights set on more this year. Their ambition caught the eye of 10 year old Zaavier Khan from East London, who decided he wanted to properly
Zaavier said: I really wanted to show that Ramadan was all about giving back to your community, so for my first time fasting I’ll be raising money for Human Appeal’s UK food parcels. “I am choosing to fast, but so many people just don’t have anything to eat. I think it’s important to make sure they have food to eat and I want to raise awareness of what Ramadan is about and what Human Appeal is doing.”
observe his first Ramadan, by fasting and raising money for Human Appeal’s UK Food Parcel project. Zaavier and mum Tahreem will be producing a video diary of his first Ramadan, which will involve Zaavier going to make iftar meals with top chefs and family members, as well as talking about the ups and downs of Ramadan as he experiences it for the first time.

Thailand: Give Sanctuary to Karen Refugees Fleeing Burmese Army Attacks
For decades the Royal Thai government has hosted ethnic Karen refugees and other refugees from Burma and we are grateful for the sanctuary we have been given in the past. Now, once again, our fellow Karen are fleeing attacks by the Burmese military. More than 20,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the past four months. Several thousand fled to Thailand but were forced to return. As Karen people we do not want to have to flee our homes and seek safety in other countries, such as Thailand. We only want to live in peace in our homeland. Now that our country is once again under direct military rule, and the military dictatorship is brutally killing unarmed protesters, including children, many people from central Burma are fleeing to ethnic states, including Karen State. Since December 2020 the military have been breaking the ceasefire agreements and sending patrols across lines into Karen National Union territory that they are not supposed to cross without permission. Local villages have been threatened and people warned they could be used as forced labour to carry military supplies. The Burmese military also start-
ed to fire mortar bombs into civilian areas bombing villages and farms. Thousands more soldiers and supplies have been brought into Karen State. On 27th March the Burmese military began using fighter jets to bomb civilian villages. Around 20 people, including a child, have been killed and many more injured. Homes and schools have been destroyed. Attacks against the Karen people are already increasing with shelling and mortar bombs happening regularly for several months. Jets continue to fly over Karen State and more bombings can take place at any time. With more soldiers still arriving in Karen state and with significantly improved technology and firepower in the past ten years, the warning signs are clear. There is a real danger of tens or even hundreds of thousands of people being forced to flee escalating attacks by the Burmese military. This will create a human rights and humanitarian crises with international implications, especially for Thailand. We understand there is also significant Burmese military buildup in Shan State which could result in more conflict and displacement there as well. This will result in many more people seeking safety in Thailand.

We appreciate the challenges that this places on the Royal Thai government, especially at a time when there is a global pandemic. We would like to call on the Royal Thai government to take the following steps to respond to this crisis: 1) The best solution is to avoid people being displaced in the first place. The Royal Thai government should urgently use all its diplomatic resources to persuade the Burmese military to stop bombings in Karen State and to

stop fighter jets flying over the area, as these cause displacement because villagers fear bombings. The Burmese military should reverse the increase in soldiers in ethnic states along the Thailand Burma border. Reducing their presence will reduce human rights violations and displacement, meaning people will not need to flee to Thailand. 2) The incidents of the week of the 29th March, where Karen people who had crossed into Thailand were told to return, caused negative international
media coverage and diplomatic pressure on Thailand. There were no winners in this situation. The refugees went back to an area they felt unsafe in, and the reputation of Thailand suffered. The Royal Thai government must put in place arrangements so that Karen refugees, and refugees from Burma who have fled the crackdown since the coup, are able to stay in Thailand temporarily and can be safely isolated to ensure there is no danger of Covid spreading. 3) If displaced people in Karen
State have no food or shelter, out of desperation they will be more likely to seek to travel to Thailand. People who have fled their homes see Thailand as a last resort. Their preference is to try to stay close to their villages in the hope they can return. We urge the Royal Thai government to reconsider its restrictions on humanitarian assistance for displaced people in Karen State. It is causing immense suffering but also counter-productive to the interests of Thailand, as it will also increase the numbers of people seeking sanctuary in Thailand.

CPEC update from Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Chairman China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Lt. General (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa said work on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Western route was in full swing. He said the Hakla-DIKhan motorway was near completion and would likely be opened for traffic in August/ September this year. “Hakla- DI Khan Motorway construction work is in full swing, current progress is 86%.Will be commissioned by Aug/Sep,” he said in his tweet. The Chairman informed that with priority on the Western route now, two other segments (Zhob-Quetta, Hoshab-Awaran) had already been started. According to an official in CPEC Authority, under the CPEC, some 1,100 kilometer roads had been completed while 850 kilometres were under construction. On the Western route, he said, the four-lane Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan Motorway was in the final stages. Its total length was 285 kms, which had been divided in five packages. The first 55 kms package would be completed on priority, which started from Yarik near D I Khan and ended at Rehmani Khel, the official told media. The National Logistics Company (NLC) has completed all infrastructure work of the motorway by keeping in view the international standards.
The infrastructure work included construction of road, two Interchanges at Abdul Khel and Yarik, six underpasses, four bridges, residential facilities and other development works. The motorway passes mostly through deserted areas where there is dearth of green areas, so around 150,000 trees have been planted along the motorway. The motorway would not only provide a fast and comfortable traveling facility for the commuters, but it would also link National Highways N-50 and N-55 with the motorway at DIKhan, he said. After the completion, the travelling time between Islamabad and DIKhan
would be reduced from existing over five hours to only two and half hours, the official added. He said the second part of the western corridor, YarakZhob-Quetta, was 540km long and would decrease the distance from Islamabad to Quetta to only 830km and would reduce travel time to eight hours. Similarly work on the 146 kilometers Hoshab-Awaran motorway has also been started which would improve connectivity with Gwadar port besides improving life standards of the people living along the road. Talking about the overall progress of CPEC, the Authority’s official said
the mega project would move forward with more pace during the current year and the years ahead, which would further strengthen the bilateral relations between Pakistan and China. Their strategic relationship, which was being strengthened with every passing day, was of great importance both on regional as well as international fronts, the official said. He said in the next phase, work on four important sectors, including industry, agriculture, socio-economic development and Gwadar New City would also be done at a fast pace. The official said nine out of 22 energy projects had been completed, while
By Syed Tauqeer Zaidi five mega electricity projects in Thar, Kohala, Azad Pattan and others were in the pipeline. After completion of all the projects, Pakistan would not only become self-sufficient in the energy with addition of 17,000 MW electricity to the national grid, but would also be able to export it. hinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong, in a recent statement, had also expressed satisfaction over the progress of CPEC projects, the official said. He said at present, work on four Special Economic Zones (SEZs) was underway. Some 2,000 local and foreign investors had expressed intent to invest in the Rashakai SEZ. The Rashakai Zone, the official said, would spread over 1,000 acres of land. The Federal Government had decided to develop it into three phases. About 247 acres of land would be developed in the first phase, 355 acres in the second phase and 399 acres in the last phase. Similarly, 210 MW electricity would be provided to the zone in three phases whereas the government had also allocated Rs 1.203 billion for provision of gas, the official said. He said over 400 industrial units, including garments and textile, domestic goods, electronics, electricity accessories, pharmaceuticals and others would be set up in the zone.

BJP’S Failure to tackle Corona Situation
There has been a recent upsurge in corona cases in India and more than 400,000 cases were reported that shook the whole world. Indian leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of prematurely claiming that he had won over Corona Virus. According to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the deadly situation in India has startled the whole world. There are lines lined-up everywhere be it for oxygen cylinders, life-saving medicines, hospital beds and even crematoriums. He accused the government of misunderstanding and mishandling the situation, and alleged that all early warning signals had been ignored. Despite repeated warnings from sci-
entists, the government has never understood or resolved the COVID-19 pandemic from the beginning. They keep ignoring rising cases and are busy campaigning. They encourage super communicator activities. Also pointed out by the Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. The country’s confidence is indeed shaking. Shocking new records emerge every day, whether it is a new infection of covid-19 or the number of deaths. As the second wave sweeps through new areas, the frustrating oxygen shortage and hospital beds seem to be spreading. The Delhi High Court warned that if it fails to provide medical oxygen to
hospitals in the city, it will take action against the central government. Many hospitals in the capital New Delhi and across the country have reported deaths due to oxygen shortages, and the country has been hit hard by the second wave of pandemics. After the current wave of COVID-19, Pakistan expressed its solidarity to the Indian people and expressed its willingness to provide India with disaster relief support including ventilators, Bi PAP, digital X-ray machines, PPE and related items. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter that Pakistan and Indian authorities can work out ways to quickly deliver relief sup-
plies. They can together also find out all the possible solutions to mitigate the impact of virus. Faisal Edhi – head of Edhi Foundation and the son of famous social worker and philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister about the deadly situation in India. He offered his help to deal with the epidemic. He said that the Edhi Foundation sympathizes with India during this difficult period and has “a fleet of 50 ambulances and our services to provide assistance to help you cope with and further avoid current health conditions. At the same time, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed solidarity with the
Indian people, who are fighting the dangerous wave of COVID-19, and praying for the rapid recovery of people in India and the rest of the world who have suffered from the pandemic. The Prime Minister said in a tweet that we want to express our solidarity with the Indian people because they are fighting the dangerous wave of COVID-19. We are praying for all those who are suffering from the pandemic in our neighbors and around the world. He emphasized that we must jointly deal with this global challenge facing mankind.

Warburtons first 16 tonne 100% electric truck goes on the road
Warburtons, the UK’s largest bakery brand, is rolling out its first 16 tonne 100% electric truck, a Renault Trucks D Z.E. The vehicle, striking in Warburtons orange livery and proudly stating ‘Our electric trucks are the best thing since sliced bread’, joins the company’s secondary bread fleet operating out of its Enfield bakery. The D Z.E., which can cover up to 150km on a single charge, can carry around six tonnes of bread and bakery products to multiple locations across
London. Fully electric, the D Z.E. is eligible to operate in the capital’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and Congestion Charge Zone without incurring charges, while its zero tailpipe emissions in use and low traffic noise make it ideal for Warburtons urban deliveries. Steven Gray, Warburtons National Transport Manager, says: “As our first 16 tonne electric truck goes on the road, we mark another important milestone in our sustainable fleet management. By using the Renault Trucks D Z.E. we offer our customers the same quality of service but with zero tailpipe emissions and quieter operation in urban environments.” Carlos Rodrigues, Managing Di-
rector, Renault Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “The Renault Trucks D Z.E. answers today’s pressing need to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution in our cities. We are delighted that Warburtons has selected the D Z.E. to deliver even more sustainably for its customers, and that this first vehicle will confidently provide this service for the next ten years.” Warburtons first D Z.E. is a 4x2 rigid featuring box body with rear side door and tail lift by PPS Commercials. Powered by 200kWh, 600 V lithium-ion batteries, the Alternating Current synchronous motor with permanent-magnet technology delivers maximum power of 185 kW,
continuous power of 130 kW and maximum torque of 425 Nm. The Z.E. reduction gearbox offers two forward speeds and one reverse. The D Z.E., which will recharge at Warburtons Enfield site, is equipped with a 22kW on board AC charger and is compatible with DC fast charging up to 150kW. The vehicle comes with Renault Trucks Battery Performance Promise which guarantees that the battery will operate for up to 10 years or deliver 250 MW of energy over the vehicle’s life. Renault Trucks engineers have taken Warburtons operational data for a number of Enfieldbased routes and mapped this against a real world, real time traffic database derived from over 1 million miles of vehicle telematics data. Their calculation of the total energy consumption of the vehicle means it will operate for a ten year period without using more than 250 MW of energy, and this is the contract duration for the first Warburtons D ZE vehicle. Supplied by Renault Trucks dealer, JDS Trucks & Vans, aftersales support for the D Z.E., which is Renault Trucks’ first production electric truck to go on the road in the UK, will be provided by local dealer Norfolk Truck & Van Enfield throughout the ten-year contract

VODAFONE JOINS FORCES WITH GOOD THINGS FOUNDATION AND MENCAP TO CONNECT THOSE IN THE WEST MIDLANDS WHO HAVE BEEN HIT HARDEST BY PANDEMIC
Vodafone today announced it is working with the social change charity Good Things Foundation to connect digitally excluded families in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. Vodafone has provided unlimited data SIMs and dongles to connect over 2,500 people, including almost 200 families and adults with disabilities in the West Midlands, enabling them to access support services, online education and employment opportunities. The Good Things Foundation ‘Connecting Families’ programme[1] crucially includes specialist one-on-one support to ensure that, in addition to devices and connectivity, every family learns essential digital skills so they can benefit fully from the tech they’ve been given. Vodafone’s has also provided Mi-Fi devices and unlimited data SIMs to support adults with learning disabilities and their carers via Good Things Foundation and Mencap, the UK’s leading learning disability charity. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that 1.9 million households[2] in the UK don’t have reliable access to fixed line internet, and as many as 11.7 million people lack the basic digital skills needed to support everyday tasks such as communicating, accessing healthcare and being safe and confident online. ONS data also points to the disproportionately negative impact Covid-19 has had on disabled people, especially those with learning disabilities, who are more likely to face digital exclusion. Since March 2020, Good Things Foundation has distributed devices and connectivity to more than 13,000 families across the UK. It works with local community partners to ensure the programme reaches families most in need and where the tech will have an impact quickly. Anecdotal evidence from its work throughout the pandemic suggests many families have struggled to support children’s learning at home because one or both parents lack technology knowledge; and that accessing essential support services, healthcare and benefit systems has been an enormous challenge. Helen Lamprell, General Counsel and External Affairs Director of Vodafone UK, said: “Our purpose as a business has been supercharged during the pandemic, in particular our role in providing connectivity and support to vulnerable

people in society who’ve been disproportionally impacted. Programmes such as schools.connected and The Great British Tech Appeal have played a big role and helped us reach more than 350,000 children and young people. I hope that, via Good Things Foundation and Mencap, we can support even more people at the time they need it most.” Helen Milner OBE, CEO, Good Things Foundation said: “We’re delighted to be working with Vodafone on the Connecting Families programme. The devices, SIMs and dongles have had a hugely positive impact for many families in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. Digital connectivity and skills are no longer a nice-to-have, but a need-to-have. People who can’t afford a device or data have struggled to access education, financial and job support, and health appointments. We know that digital access has been a lifeline to disadvantaged families and the need to work together to continue to work towards fixing the Digital Divide has never been greater.” Phil Clark, Digital Partnerships Programme Manager at the learning disability charity Mencap, said: “The world we live in is becoming increasingly digital and, as we have seen during the crisis, it’s more important than ever to be digitally connected. People with a learning disability often struggle to access and use digital tools and it is vital that they are not left behind, particularly during the pandemic when so many have suffered. “With the right support, people with a learning disability can use technology to be independent, stay connected and feel more included in their local community. We are incredibly grateful to be working with Vodafone and the Good Things Foundation to help connect more people with a learning disability across the UK - especially during such challenging times.” Vodafone announced in March that it had donated 10,000 dongle devices to Business2Schools, which is distributing them to schools across the UK. It also made a £200,000 donation to the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s ‘Learn at Home’ campaign to enable it to distribute 500 computer kits to disadvantaged young people and provide specialist training to youth workers so they can teach digital and coding skills. These donations follow Vodafone’s schools.connected programme, which gave 350,000 SIM cards to 9,000 schools and colleges across the UK; and its Great British Tech Appeal which calls on the public and businesses to donate unwanted devices. Working with Barnardo’s, SafeLives and British Red Cross, Vodafone then sends these devices to those most in need, with six months’ free connectivity. To date, the programme has helped over 5,000 vulnerable people.

Lockdown “a wasted opportunity” - claims curry leader Nominations open for Asian & Oriental Chef Awards Asian Curry Awards in London, Asian Restaurants Awards in Manchester and Edinburgh announced The chairman of the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), Yawar Khan, has said the opportunities presented by the extended closure imposed to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, have been wasted by many restaurateurs. Despite the devastation heaped on businesses in the hospitality sector by the pandemic, Khan said that the enforced closure was an opportunity for owners to plan for the future, re-engineer their operations, innovate and implement a new business plan. The Asian community has been particularly badly hit but the virus, with ethnic minorities being worse affected than the general population, for a variety of social and medical reasons. “Every cloud has a silver lining and government support in the form of VAT cuts, furlough payments, rate relief and, bounce back loads, has been a welcome lifeline,” said Khan, adding, “Fortunately many ACF members have been able to rely on a growth in takeaway orders during lockdown.” Khan points to many initiatives adopted by struggling restaurants in order to survive the pandemic. These include Michelin-starred restaurants offering takeaways for the first time, cook at home meal-kits, menu development with unique fusions, Zoom-based cookery classes, extensive refurbishments, staff training, online ordering platforms, learning social media marketing skills and more.

Twitter suspends Kangana Ranaut’s account over hateful speech
Twitter has suspended the famous Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut over hateful conduct and violation of behavior. She is known as enthusiastic supporter of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She breached the twitter rules of hateful speech and misbehavior and thus her account was banned. Ranaut urged in a tweet she posted on Monday that Modi must use tactics to tame Bengali Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee’s party won the regional elections and defeated Modi’s party. After the election, Banagher’s party was accused of violent attacks on its defeated opponent. In her tweet, Ranaut called Banerjee a “released monster” and urged Modi to “tame her.” She wrote: “We need super gundai (gangsters in Hindi) to kill gundai... Modi ji (respects) Please show your Virat roop from the early 2000s,” she apparently mentioned The Gujarat riots in 2002 occurred during Modi’s tenure as prime minister. Twitter explained its policy after confirming that Ranaut’s account had been suspended on Tuesday. We are very clear that we will take strong enforcement actions against actions that may cause offline harm. Due to repeated violations of Twitter rules, especially our hateful conduct and abuse policies, the referenced account has been permanently disabled. Ranaut, a winner of multiple national film awards, criticized Twitter’s actions in a statement. “Twitter only proves my point. They are American, and white people feel right to enslave brown people from birth.” She said. They want to tell you how to think, speak or do things. Ramadan is a special time in Pakistan and we also get a lot of new rhythms that we can listen to with iftars, colors and blessings. Pop star and actor Ali Zafar, who has been actively interacting with her audience all year round, has now released her own version of the hit naat and qawwali 'Balaghal Ula Bi Kamaalihi. The singer said in the statement he made on his social media account, "I hope it gives you peace of mind while listening to what he brings to my heart." he also uploaded a forwardlooking post saying "I can't express the emotion while I record this" the day before. The video starts with Zafar standing against the backdrop of the glorious Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, dressed in a modest white shalwar kameez, surrounded by his band, on the piano board, homophonic instrument and vocal harmony. The 40-year-old reads Naat in his emotional voice. Late and Legendary Sabri Brothers performed this famous Kalaam. Pakistan's most prolific group of qawwals, perhaps the talented Shahenshah (Shahenshah) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan born once in a millenium, has also
performed a qawali version. Naat is multilingual in stages written in Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, and is based on a famous Arabic quatrain, or ruba’i, written by Persian poet Saad Shirazi. The original ruba’i is separated by Urdu and Arabic verses, the sources of which no one can guess. Most of the Naat focuses on the story of the 'miraj', the event of the Prophet (pbuh) ascending beyond the heavens and skies on a winged creature named Buraq to meet with God. Earlier, Atıf Aslam posted a naat called 'Mustafa Jaan-e-Rehmat' to commemorate Ramadan and was well received by fans around the world. The video is approaching six million on YouTube about two weeks after it's published.

3D technology could see heart disease patients diagnosed and treated five times faster Life-threatening coronary heart disease could be diagnosed and treated five times faster with the help of new 3D technology.
The technology turns a CT scan of the heart into a 3D image, which allows doctors to diagnose the problem in just 20 minutes, NHS England said. Previously, diagnoses would require a more invasive and time-consuming angiogram in hospital. Some 100,000 people will be able to use the new technology - called HeartFlow - over the next three years and it could mean they are seen, diagnosed and treated around five times faster. Birmingham Clean Air Zone Charging Order published ahead of 1 June 2021 launch date With one month to go until the launch of Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone, Birmingham City Council has published the Birmingham Clean Air Zone Charging Order 2021.
available, how the council will approach any enforcement associated with non-payment of the Clean Air Zone daily fee and how it intends to use any income generated from the zone.
The order sets out the full details of how the Clean Air Zone will operate. The order (except Article 7) came into force on 26 April 2021. Article 7 (Imposition of charges) will come into force on 1 June 2021. This means that from 1 June 2021 onwards vehicles of specified classes that do not meet the emissions standards set out in the order will, subject to specified exemptions, be required to pay the charge stated in the order to drive in the Birmingham Clean Air Zone. Owners of high polluting vehicles will be charged to drive within the A4540 Middleway (but not the Middleway itself). The order sets out the temporary and permanent exemptions
Temporary exemption permits are available for: ►► people who live in the Clean Air Zone ►► businesses who store vehicles overnight within the Clean Air Zone. ►► people who live outside of the Clean Air Zone but who: »» work more than 18 hours a week at premises within the Clean Air Zone »» earned not more than £30,000 in the tax year ending 5 April 2019 »» are the registered owner/ keeper of a non-compliant vehicle A voucher scheme, which will enable visitors to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Attwood Green Medical Centre and Badger Medical Centre to cancel any charges online. Following conversations with the NHS, this scheme has also been extended
to include Millennium Point as a mass vaccination centre. Stephen Arnold, Head of Clean Air Zone, said: “With less than four weeks to go until the launch of the Clean Air Zone on 1 June 2021, the publication of the Charging Order represents another significant milestone on our journey to cleaner air. As we move even closer to the zone’s implementation, we are urging people who have not already done so to check if they will be charged and if eligible, apply for a temporary exemption permit or financial support. “If you are subject to the charges, now is the time to consider your options to either pay the charge or explore alternative options to travelling by private car.” Those who are eligible for a temporary exemption permit are being advised to apply with all supporting evidence by no later than 10 May 2021 to be guaranteed their exemption in time for the 1 June 2021 launch. Applications submitted after that date will still be processed but there is no guarantee they will be approved in time for the Clean Air Zone and therefore charges will apply.
Charity to provide Eid gifts to sick children of all background! (Hospitals in London, Birmingham & Newcastle)
UK-based humanitarian charity, Muslim Aid, are launching a campaign this Ramadan to provide gifts for hundreds of sick children in UK hospitals. Working with London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Newcastle Hospital Charity, Muslim Aid will be providing Eid gifts to children from all backgrounds, on over 40 different wards, including burn centres, intensive care, neurosurgery, and more. Muslim Aid will be providing crafts and activities for the children, which can be taken home. Mindful of the need for gifts that are suitable for children who are unwell, the charity will provide items such as chunky pens that are easy to grip, paper mâché kits, which are great for sensory play, and sock kits for children to create their own companions to keep at their bedside. Spearheading the campaign is Muslim Aid volunteer and mum of three,
Sultana, who has first-hand experience of long hospital stays with her son, Musa. Diagnosed with cancer when he was just 10 months old, Musa bravely faced five months of intensive chemotherapy, and later, a bone marrow transplant. Over the many years that Musa needed treatment, Sultana spent months in the hospital, where she experienced the many challenges that young patients and their families face when confined to the wards. In particular, Sultana noticed how the hospitals would be decorated for holidays such as Christmas and Halloween, with gifts being distributed by volunteers to mark these occasions. However, during Eid, there was nothing. For this reason, Sultana is now leading this campaign to ensure that Eid won’t be cancelled for the hundreds of children in hospital this year. Sultana will be an integral part of the project, delivering many of the gifts herself.
Sultana says: I am delighted to be working with Muslim Aid as their staff have shown real enthusiasm to support communities right here in the UK. Eid is a joyous occasion, which every child should be able to enjoy, so we are helping to bring some normality to their lives. With the pandemic and continued uncertainty, a small gift can bring a smile to the faces of these beautiful children. Muslim Aid CEO Kashif Shabir says: Muslim Aid supports thousands of children across the globe through a range of initiatives, including child sponsorship, education, and protection projects. Our campaign to provide gifts to chil-
dren in hospitals comes as part of our commitment to bring the support we offer to children abroad to young people living here in the UK. By enabling hundreds of children in UK hospitals to share in the celebration of Eid, while spreading joy to patients and families feeling isolated within hospitals, we will ensure that sick children across the UK are supported through the challenges they face. Muslim Aid is an international humanitarian charity with relief and development programmes in countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. It is the second oldest Muslim charity in the UK and celebrated its 35th anniversary in November.
The charity works to support and empower people suffering the effects of poverty, war, and natural disaster through both emergency relief and sustainable programmes designed to provide long-term support and create independent futures. For more information, please visit https://www.muslimaid.org/ children-in-hospital-eid-gifts/ A gift for a sick child costs £15, while supporters can donate up to £500 to provide gifts for an entire ward of approximately 35 children. Birmingham tea drinkers new research shows wellness benefits 84% OF PEOPLE IN BIRMINGHAM SAY DRINKING TEA HELPS TO IMPROVE THEIR MOOD, WHILE 49% CLAIM IT KEEPS THEM CALM
As families enjoy getting together for probably the first shared pot of tea in a year – just in time for International Tea Day – a new independent research study commissioned by the Tea Advisory Panel[1] has found that two thirds (66%) of people in Birmingham share the same tea drinking habits as our parents or children. This makes tea a truly intergenerational drink and one that’s packed with top-to-toe health benefits – from cognitive and brain health to protection of heart and gut function. Dietitian, Dr Carrie Ruxton, from the Tea Advisory Panel – www.teaadvisorypanel. com - says: “As well as being popular across the ages, tea provides distinct benefits for each generation. Studies show that working age adults who drink tea improve their mental focus and memory, while older adults benefit from lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease. Even children over the age of four years – normally given milk or soft drinks – can get a health advantage by switching to milky unsweetened tea since it contains natural fluoride which protects teeth. “Tea is also proven to have gut health effects, as noted in a research review published in the journal, Nutrients[2]. Drinking green tea boosted gut levels of Bifidobacterium – a healthy strain of bacteria linked with metabolic health – with effects seen after just two weeks. This could particularly help women who tend to suffer digestive discomfort more often than men”. GP, Dr Gill Jenkins, adds: “Another review just published in the Journal of Human Nutrition[3] confirmed the brain and cognitive benefits of regular tea drinking. The secret is the natural elixir of polyphenols, caffeine and L-theanine which have been shown to influence the brain from adolescence to old age. Indeed, in the new poll commissioned by the Tea Advisory Panel, more than eight in ten (84%) of people in Birmingham say drinking tea helps to improve their mood, while almost half (49%) claim it keeps them calm”. The Tea Advisory Panel poll also found intergenerational differences in the way we take our tea. While adding milk to tea remains popular, younger people are trying tea without milk or adding plant milks. Also, a third of younger people
Celebrate the health and wellness benefits of a cuppa this International Tea Day - May 21st 2021
leave the teabag in for longer than their elders – which is far better for extracting the maximum number of polyphenols. GP, Dr Gill Jenkins, comments: “Research shows that tea components, especially polyphenols, influence brain health, mood and cognitive function by relaxing blood vessels and improving their function. This lowers blood pressure and brings more nutrients and oxygen to the brain. Tea polyphenols are also anti-inflammatory and deliver antioxidant effects which protect brain cells from damage. The unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine, an amino acid in tea, promotes mental focus and helps to preventing mind-wandering as evidenced by recent clinical trials”. The new poll also found that almost one in 10 (7 %) of people in Birmingham use a cuppa to keep their brain functioning well, while more than 8 out of 10 (87%) say their morning tea – especially black tea – wakes them up and gets them going. Younger people in Birmingham tend to favour tea in the evening and say it helps them to relax. A fascinating aspect of the new poll was that even the aroma of tea has an impact on how people feel and think, a fact supported by the new
systematic review lead by Dr Jenkins, which investigated data on the effects of tea when it comes to our cognition, brain and mind health.3 More than half of Birmingham residents say they feel cosy, happy and relaxed – as well as energised – when they get the first sniff of a freshly brewed cuppa. Tea aroma also makes 31% of Birmingham residents think about their parents while 21% remember their grandparents or 6% hark back to childhood camping trips. Dr Carrie Ruxton concludes: “All the evidence on tea means that drinking 3-4 cups of tea a day – as many of us already do – could benefit children and teenagers needing to complete homework, working adults trying to destress or focus on complex tasks, and retired adults who want to retain optimal brain health as they age. “Yet, as the Tea Advisory Panel poll revealed, most people are still unaware of these benefits and simply drink tea because it makes them feel good. Whether we’re enjoying a cuppa alone or with friends and family this International Tea Day, it’s time to celebrate the health benefits that our humble cuppa provides to both young and old.”

TECHNOLOGY Polestar launches new digital key and updated app for Polestar 2
T: 0121 771 4545
www.asianworldnews.co.uk
Thanks to an Over-the-Air (OTA) update, Polestar 2 now comes with new digital key technology (beta), allowing owners to use their connected smartphone as a supplement to the traditional key fob. In addition, the latest OTA update includes the activation of new integrated vehicle functionality (beta) within the Polestar app. “The Polestar Digital Key is one of our most anticipated features, because the convenience of not having to carry a physical key is invaluable.” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “Being able to use your phone as the key makes sense especially in an age where our phones take care of most of our daily needs already, and it’s the one device you always carry with you.” Naturally, security has been of the highest priority in developing the Polestar Digital Key (beta). A total of 18 Bluetooth sensors in and around Polestar 2 communicate with the paired device to support accuracy, secure authentication and ease of use when accessing and starting the car. Strategically positioned sensors around the vehicle detect the approach of the paired device.
ditional key fob, with no need to tap the phone against any sensors or open the app before use.” The digital key itself is encrypted within the Polestar app on the paired device, and following extensive testing is deemed far safer than a traditional key fob. The digital key is also immune to so-called relay attacks as it does not operate on radio frequency, and the encrypted Bluetooth signal is entirely reliant on the paired device being within physical range of the sensors. With the latest OTA update, the Polestar app now includes vehicle functionality (beta). Battery status, remote climate start and remote locking are now available, with more functions to be added over time. Thomas Ingenlath concludes: “The updated Polestar app now brings extra convenience to owning a Polestar 2. The simple action of being able to pre-heat
From within an arm’s length, the sensors pinpoint the position of the device, allowing the doors, tailgate or charging lock button to be opened or activated with enhanced accuracy and security. Starting the car requires the
paired device to be positioned within the vehicle to safeguard against unintentional starting. “We focused on high accuracy and ease of use,” continues Thomas Ingenlath. “It’s really as easy and integrated as a tra-
or cool the cabin remotely is something we know adds huge value to the everyday experience and we know Polestar 2 owners have been eagerly awaiting this functionality. Of course, more functionality will be released in the future and we see great potential for the continued digital experience in Polestar 2.” In addition to the new Polestar Digital Key (beta) and the updated Polestar app with vehicle functionality (beta), the latest OTA update for Polestar 2 includes new battery pre-heating measures to improve range, a revision to the way distance to empty (DTE) is shown, with a more linear algorithm, and an adaptation to the wireless phone charger for newer phones with additional magnetic elements – amongst other bug fixes and stability improvements.
10 domains have grabbed the attention of 60-70% of the world Recently a multi-year research project was conducted by Paul X. McCarthy, a part-time professor at UNSW, and Marian-Andrei Rizoiu, a lecturer in computer science at the University of Technology Sydney. This shocking new study on the online economy found that only 10 domains attract most of the world’s attention and will attract more people in the next few years. Researchers studied global trends in online diversity and dominance, focusing on link patterns from the world’s most popular social networks (such as Reddit and Twitter). They surveyed a total of 5.6 terabytes of data, which spanned a decade of global online activity. When looking at the long-term trends of corporate online competition, they discovered the “dramatic integration” in the digital world where more and more companies have a disproportionate impact on the world’s attention. By 2020, the “.com” domain name has exceeded 150 million sites. Even if the products of the online business continue to expand to include more functions and applications, the number of companies ultimately responsible for these products is also declining. Ten years ago, when the research started, there were 20 different domains for every 100 random links checked. Since then, the number of domain names in
every 100-link sharing has been reduced to 5. The researchers concluded that 60% to 70% of all attention to major social media platforms only focus on 10 domains. They also studied the connections between the 20 billion links shared in the past three years and found that the authority, popularity and influence of the top 1,000 websites in the world are growing, while all other websites are declining in these areas. Even as functions increase, the actual diversity of resources that provide these functions seems to be shrinking rapidly. Of the new domain names registered in 2006, almost 40% survived the first five years. However, in contrast, only 3% of those are surviving till date. The researchers’ findings underscore a shocking reality:
Not only online businesses are affected by the loss of online diversity, but also the entire online economy. Regardless of the niche market or customer base, the possibility of a newly successful online business being swallowed by one of the few domains that dominate the online world seems to increase over time.

Katas Raj: A breathtaking Temple Katas Raj: A breathtaking Temple - By Hasnain Syed Katas Raj, an ancient Hindu temple associated with Indus civilization is just two hours drive from federal capital Islamabad. This historical temple is located in district Chakwal where primeval history still takes its breath. With 25 hundred feet altitude, temples and surrounding palaces are visible from a far distance with naked eye. Once it was a center of excellence linked with knowledge and arts including a university which was famous for Sanskrit language learning. It is believed that legendary Muslim mathematician, historian and astrologist
Abu Rehan Al bairooni learned Sanskrit language from said university which was part of Katas Raj. The tales of Katas Raj are also mentioned in the sacred book of “Maha Baharat” which was writ-
ten almost three hundred years before Christ (300 BC), but history of this region could be traced back to 5 thousand years. In his autobiography, first Mughal emperor Zahir ud Babar revealed that his locality was covered with
dense forest and famous for rhinoceros hunting. The uniqueness of Katas Raj is its pool of water; it has a very interesting story. According Hindu mythology it is believed that when the wife of Lord Shiv died, he cried and wept for a long time. His tears gathered and converted into a sacred pool of water which is now vanishing, yet one can imagine the magnificence of the pond. In Hindu religion, this pond and its water is considered sacred. Each year around the globe including India, Hindu pilgrims visit this place to perform their religious rituals. These pilgrims baptize themselves in holy water and believe this ablution will purify their body and soul. Pool is encircled by small temples where artwork is telling the ancient architecture of Indus valley. As you enter Raj Katas main gate, a mesmerizing and gripping scene will welcome you. A pedestrian path on the left side will lead you
to the heights of Katas Raj. There a sign board “Sat Girah” is guiding the tourists about a cluster of seven small temples. There you will find a “barah dari” corridor with twelve doors where one can see and feel the essence of history. It seems that one is travelling in the magnificent past. Seven Temples “Sat Girah” has a matchless construction pattern. Each temple is a triple story building. One escalating staircase leads the tourists to go to the top. Ground floor was exclusive for prayers and rituals. Second floor contains narrow and dark rooms while the third story provides a bird eye view of Katas Raj. These temples remain aromatic with ‘ager batti’ the smoked fragrance. It is said that at the time of temple making, grains and lintels were also used as construction material; this is the reason temples remain chill and cool from inside throughout the year. The other noteworthy archeologi-
cal sites of the neighborhoods include; Kali Mata Temple, Sheesh Nag Temple, Holy Tree, Residence of Monks, Lakshmi Davi Temple, Ram Gee Temple, Sacred Well, Ashok’s Stupa, Water cave and a historical gigantic stone. There is a mysterious tunnel in this locality, an interesting saga is associated with this tunnel. It is said that all four vades (Holy books of Hinduism) were written here in this mystifying tunnel. In 2005 the Punjab government decided to renovate this cultural heritage. Former Indian Prime Minister and BJP leader L. K. Advani inaugurated this restoration work of Katas Raj Temple which was completed in February 2014. Here one can also see and sense the footprints and shads of Greek, Derawar, Mulsim, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism cultural history. If you want to trace the glory of history, indeed Katas Raj is a marvelous destination where you will experience a fantastic journey and a pleasing panorama.

not have had easy access on their computers to the labels to pass on this information. The new digital solution addresses this issue. As of 1 May, tyre label ratings will be made available to retailers through their computers and they will be obliged to provide the information to customers. This information is drawn from a European database holding the ratings of every tyre on sale, which will be made accessible to the public. Inevitably, there will be an ‘interim’ period before the old label completely disappears. All tyres in stockrooms will have the old label applied to them and until these have been sold and replaced customers may still see the old label. In fact, customers are likely to see the new tyre labelling information digitally via the retailer or online.
What’s different about the new tyre label? »» The number of ratings has dropped to five, in-line with other consumer products such as domestic appliances: ‘A’ being the best, ‘E’ being the worst »» If the tyre is classified as suitable for use on snow, it will have the Alpine peaks symbol. New Ford headlights are ahead of the curve in making night driving easier
Driving at night, especially on winding unfamiliar roads, can be stressful, with many people choosing to avoid the experience altogether. 1 However, Ford is looking into new ways of making driving in the dark easier and more comfortable. The company first pioneered using road signs and lane markings as cues to adjust headlight beams to better illuminate the road ahead, especially around junctions. Now, engineers from Ford Research and Advanced Engineering Europe are testing technology that uses real-time location data to effectively show the car the way to go. The predictive smart headlight system directs beams into upcoming corners even before drivers may have seen them, illuminating hazards and other road users more quickly and effectively How it works The prototype advanced lighting system uses GPS location data, advanced technologies and highly accurate street geometry information to accurately identify turns in the road ahead. An algorithm calculates the trajectory and speed of the vehicle to proactively adjust the direction of its headlights, providing optimal light coverage of bends, junctions – and even hazards lurking around the corner. If the vehicle encounters a stretch of
road where location data is not available, the system will work alongside camera- and steering‑based dynamic headlight bending technologies to continue to intelligently light the road until the location data improves. Researchers have made extensive use of “digital twin” simulation that recreates the physical world in a virtual environment. The simulator accurately calculates how light falls and reflects in the real world, enabling researchers to better visualise and optimise the technology for drivers. Michael Koherr, Ford European lighting research engineer, said: “The predictive lighting technology we are developing now means that one day driving in the dark could be as simple as just following your headlights. This new map- and location‑based system is the next step on our quest to make driving at night no more difficult or stressful as during the day.”

Money back guarantees replacing test drives for many buyers
Following the reopening of physical forecourts earlier this month, the market has quickly returned to strength, with most retailers trading at over 30%[1] up over the same period in 2019 during the week of 12th April. This huge demand is reflected in the increased traffic to the Auto Trader marketplace, which last week saw cross-platform visits increase 40% versus 2019. Further highlighting the current strength of the market, the average price of a used car increased 5.8% last week on a year-on-year and like-for-like basis, accelerating on the 5.7% growth recorded the prior week. The research, which was conducted in April, highlights that a significant proportion of buyers continue to look for online retailing services. In fact, whilst the appetite for forecourt transactions remain, nearly a quarter (23%) of car buyers would prefer an online experience, either completing the purchase online
Commenting on the research, Auto Trader’s director of data and insight, Richard Walker, said:
“
Based on the anecdotal feedback we’ve been receiving from many of our retailer partners over the last few weeks, the huge levels of demand we’re tracking in the market will come as little surprise. However, this research does highlight the opportunities for retailers to capture a greater share of demand by adapting their processes in line with evolving consumer preferences. Many buyers are now happy to purchase without a test drive if a money-back guarantee is in place. This is another example of the traditional barriers to buying online being removed for consumers with improved services offered by retailers. The old test drive format is no longer fit for purpose, with consumers demonstrating a clear preference for either unaccompanied or extended at home test drives.
“
The latest consumer research from Auto Trader reveals that whilst 72% of car buyers would not consider making a purchase without a test drive, nearly two thirds (62%) would be open to buying a car without one if they are offered a 14-day money back guarantee.
and having the vehicle delivered to their home (14%), or alternatively, collected from a pick-up point (9%). As well as the opportunity to make the online retailing experience more attractive to more car buyers, the research reveals that how test drives are conducted is set to evolve significantly. In fact, nearly three quarters will be conducted differently in the future to meet changing consumer expectations: out of the 1,900 people surveyed, 30% said their preference was for an unaccompanied test drive at the dealership, whilst 41%

would rather conduct theirs off site completely. Of those who prefer to test drive away from the dealership - 21% would like theirs to take place from home, and one in five (20%) favour an extended testing period - 70% would be happy to pay a small fee to do so if it was paid back upon purchase. Similarly, the research also revealed more than half (58%) of consumers would be willing to pay a deposit to reserve the car of their choice in order to safeguard it from other potential buyers.
The Lotus Evija has been named as ‘The One to Watch’ in Top Gear’s second ever Electric Awards. The all-electric hypercar was recently tested by Top Gear magazine editor Jack Rix on the test track at Lotus HQ in Hethel, Norfolk, and his article is published over eight pages in the May issue. Rix calls the Evija not just a halo car for Lotus – “a signpost for the future of the company” – but labels it “a flagbearer for really fast electric vehicles as a whole”. The Evija, which will go into production later this year, is the world’s most powerful car. It has an output of more than 2,000 PS from its all-electric, all-wheel drive powertrain. Rix notes it can accelerate from 124mph to 186mph (200 km/h to 300 km/h) in just three seconds, half the time it takes a Bugatti Chiron to do the same. Rix was driving an Evija prototype restricted to 1,600 PS. “It’s light on its feet, playful with the instant mash of acceleration even a naturally aspirated engine could only fantasise about.” He’s also full of praise for the work of the project development team, saying the core Lotus DNA is obvious right from the first corner. “The steering is superb, light and darty around the deadahead, then loading up according to wheel angle and speed.” He concludes that “Lotus is on the brink of something special.” Matt Windle, Managing Director, Lotus Cars, said: “Of all the EVs in development around the world, it’s an honour to be recognised by the Top Gear team as ‘The One to Watch’. Validation work on the car continues apace, and we resumed our world tour with the car last month. We look forward to showing it to more people in the physical world in the coming weeks.”

Warwickshire Cricket Board launch Ramadan Cricket League at Edgbaston with Chance to Shine Street Warwickshire Cricket Board (WCB) in partnership with the Chance to Shine Street cricket programme, has launched a new, free, indoor league for youngsters, aged 16 to 18-year-old, at the Edgbaston Cricket Centre in evenings throughout the period of Ramadan. Taking place between 10pm and midnight every Tuesday and Friday evening, the young cricketers have joined from existing WCB Chance to Shine Street cricket projects in Aston, Nechells, Saltley and Sparkhill and are taking part in six-a-side games, played with a taped tennis ball. The project was developed by WCB Community Cricket Development Manager Eaton Gordon and is being seen as a pilot for what could expand to an adult tournament and extended beyond Edgbaston next year. Chance to Shine Street cricket is a fast, fun format of the game that is bringing cricket to some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country where there is a lack of traditional cricket clubs. In line with government Covid guidance, projects are restarting across the country in urban communities. “It’s fantastic to bring together so many young cricketers to enjoy competitive cricket at the Edgbaston Cricket Centre during such an important time in the Muslim calendar,” said Eaton Gordon. “The bi-weekly sessions get under-
way shortly after Iftar, when they have finished fasting, and we provide prebooked taxis to ensure safe transportation to and from the venue. Having access to an indoor space, in the Edgbaston Cricket Centre, late at night ensures that we can provide the safest possible experience and environment. “Whilst the current Government guidelines have restricted the age groups that we can work with, we see the potential to grow this programme year-on-year and to replicate similar cricketing opportunities that cricket fans experience during Ramadan in many parts of the world.” Stuart Cain, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “Understanding how we can help the communities we serve in Birmingham and further afield is crucial. Providing late-night space to play cricket and also the means to get to and from Edgbaston safely during Ramadan gives youngsters a new way to use their time. Hopefully, once Covid restrictions are lifted we can extend this to an adult league as well. “We are making progress, and initiatives such as Chance to Shine Street Cricket and the African Caribbean Engagement (ACE) Programme are helping us break down barriers across the city’s diverse communities. However,
we are acutely aware that there is a lot of work still to be done and we are continuing to invest more in our community programmes each year.” Emma Palmer, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Chance to Shine said “It is vital that we are proactive to make the game accessible for all. This is a shining example of how we can adapt our programmes to be inclusive of those from diverse communities to play cricket. By thinking a little bit differently, we’re able to adjust how we deliver the game to meet the needs of our Street cricketers. We’re delighted to be working with the fantastic team at WCB to make this possible and to support those who are observing Ramadan during this month.” For more information regarding Chance to Shine Street Ramadan League, please contact Eaton Gordon on eatongordon@edgbaston.com.
