Transport bosses have revealed that a third of London’s buses will run on fuel made from meat from next year By March, 3,000 of the capital’s 8,900 buses will use B20 green diesel, which is blended with waste from the meat industry. Animal fat and cooking oil are among the ingredients that will be churned into the bus fuel. The buses are all owned by Stagecoach and Metroline, while the diesel will be supplied by Argent Energy. More than 640 buses already run on the modified fuel as part of a twomonth trial.
TfL’s buses director Mike Weston said: “This improvement, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 21,000 tonnes each year, is being introduced now with no extra spend needed and no long delay for the fitting of new kit.” TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone plan means all 300 single decker buses operating in central London must be electric or hydrogen-powered by 2010. All 3,100 double decker buses must be hybrids by the same date.
Dutch driving instructors can now accept SEX as payment The new law, called ‘Ride for a Ride’, has just been introduced by the Dutch government for any student as long as they are over the age of 18. Prostitution is legal in Holland, if the person has a valid escort licence and pays their taxes on a self-employment basis, with this new law taking things one step further. But not everyone is impressed by the ruling. Gert-Jan Segers, from the conservative Christian Union Party, tabled a question to the Dutch parliament saying the practice should remain illegal. Responding, Netherlands
Transport Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen and Justice minister Ard van der Steur said: ‘It’s not about offering sexual activities for remuneration, but offering a driving lesson. ‘It is important that the initiative lies with the driving instructor, and focuses on offering a driving lesson, with the payment provided in sexual acts. ‘When a sexual act is offered in lieu of financial payment, that is prostitution.’ Web searches for ‘Ride for a Ride’ have apparently increased after the law got the green light.
New Law will make it a crime to 'bully' your partner Laws coming into force on Tuesday can mean a five year prison sentence for ‘psychological bullying’ within relationships
How would you like a monthly pay check from the government whether you work or not? A city in Holland is the latest place in Europe to introduce a ‘basic income’ – a monthly paycheck from the government, whether people work or not. Utrecht will pay the monthly wage to a small group of people currently claiming benefits, with a view to rolling it out further if it’s a success. The radical idea is to get rid of the ‘poverty trap’ that can mean people on benefits lose out when they actually find work as the income will not be means tested. 19 other municipalities are bringing in the change too, according to The Guardian. To begin with, small groups of benefit claimants will get £660 a month and will be able to keep any income they make on top of this. It will be up to them to decide if they want to add to that by looking for work.

Orlando Bloom ‘deported’ from India! One of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Orlando Bloom was recently invited to India as a special guest of the state to promote tourism, but ironically it seems the star had to be deported back due to Visa issues. According to reports, the actor was turned away at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport last weekend because of ‘deficiencies in his electronic tourist visa’. Orlando is said to have applied for an e-visa weeks ago and didn’t discover it had been rejected until he arrived in the country. The Lord of the Rings, star, who had been invited to visit the Taj Mahal by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was promptly ordered to leave and was on a
flight back to the UK a few hours later. Once he’d left India, the state’s government stepped in and granted him a new visa and Orlando was able to fly back within days to India. Orlando then flew back to the country for the second time in as many days. India’s new e-tourist visa allows travellers from 44 countries, including the United Kingdom, to arrange a visa online before they arrive. “When one applies for an electronic visa, one receives a mail saying whether the visa has been issued or rejected,” a spokesperson for Ministry of External Affairs said.
“I think he must have landed without the confirmation email or forgotten to check whether the visa has been granted or not.

Immigration officials it didn’t stop the 38-year-old star from soaking in the sites and enjoying his tour of the Taj Mahal.
“It takes a minimum of 72 hours and a maximum of four days for the visa to be processed, at the end of which, your visa is accepted or rejected. “The traveller is supposed to carry it along to produce to the immigration officer for scanning.” Amar Singh a prominent politician in Uttar Pradesh, who went to receive Bloom told the Guardian: “The immigration officials were insensitive and stubborn, and though Bloom was feeling uneasy and needed a doctor he wasn’t even allowed to sit. “They kept saying, ‘Bloom is an

The airline aims to operate within shariah (Islamic Law) guidelines. With a tasteful green and black colour scheme the key focus of the airline will be on piety. Manager Jaafar Zamhari told reporters that female Muslim

We are proud of this,’ Jaffar was quoted as to news agencies. “We are not talking about being a holy airline or flying to holy destinations. We just want to provide an alternative to travellers, but we are open to all races and religions.” It is believed that UK-based Firnas Airways is planning to offer similar flights and may follow suit.

Confessions of a recovering shisha-holic Is it time to emerge from this ‘halal haze’ and acknowledge a ticking health time-bomb in our communities? Nazneen Mehta reports. by Nazneen Mehta
molasses? Good. Company of friends? Good. What’s not to like?
Everyone remembers their first time.
Eight years, hundreds of hookah sessions, one piece of smoke free legislation and one personal epiphany later, and there’s plenty not to like.
Mine was more than ten years ago in a Lebanese cafe on Edgeware Road, London, and as the halal haze and smell of sweet tobacco enveloped me in its warm embrace, I was undone. For a couple of years after that, every weekend would end with hummus and hookah with my urban family into the early hours. This despite never having smoked a cigarette. I then moved to West Yorkshire, at a time when the hookah bar culture was burgeoning, and my passion for the pipe deepened. To misquote Joey from friends - fruit flavoured tobacco and
Not least the alarming research and statistics from all manner of health experts, some of whom claim that one single hookah session can be equivalent to smoking between 100 and 200 normal cigarettes. But then again, they WOULD say that wouldn’t they? After all, they are probably secretly sponsored by the tobacco giants who are threatened by the very existence and economic potential of this burgeoning subculture and legitimate business in boom. Who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory?
The British Heart Foundation - ok, so they are a pretty good authority on these things - has claimed that in one puff of shisha you inhale the same amount of smoke as you’d get from a whole cigarette. So, in one session, you could realistically puff your way through 40 normal tabs or more.
Or should the self-righteous brigade just shut up and go indulge in another, lesser evil like a fatty burger or a pint of Guinness?
But, when it comes down to it, what really is wrong with it? After all, it’s about so much more than who blows the biggest smoke rings.
As clearly as I remember my first puff, I also remember the moment that changed my shisha habits forever.
Elsewhere, research has shown that the risk of lung cancer is magnified EIGHT-fold when you smoke shisha regularly.
I suffered a particularly bad shisha ‘hangover’ - the ‘halal hangover’ as some might want to call it. The next day I had pains in my chest like I had never experienced before. Something just clicked, and the pipe passion within me evaporated - as if in a puff of smoke.
For those who don’t want to go to the pub, and are bored with bowling and eating out and the cinema - or just want something to do after all those things - it’s a great place to hang out with your friends until the early hours,
In one disturbing development earlier this year, a 20-year-old Australian woman was rushed to hospital suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning after spending one hour a day smoking shisha. Can we really continue to ignore this ticking health time-bomb, the real effects of which will likely show themselves in 20 or 30 year’s time?
It was pointed out that people who drink alcohol are not asked similar questions and “alcohol is a bigger killer than shisha smoking will ever be”. The general consensus also seemed to be that there is some wilful “sweeping under the carpet” by the authorities of those establishments which might be teetering on the edge of legality.
I went through the usual phases of withdrawal; then becoming one of those annoying, sanctimonious anti-smoking types; and then settling into a new routine of just not going out when the ‘out’ was a smoke filled room.
There’s none of the rowdiness associated with booze fuelled antics at licensed venues. It’s not as bad as ‘pubbing or clubbing’, although your mum probably still wouldn’t approve. But it’s halal(ish) so you - and she - can live with it. Moreover, the shisha culture is not about being anti-social and antiintegration, it’s quite the opposite. Where else can a group of diverse friends sit until 3am talking about

of shisha establishments are operating legally, at least those which abide by the 50 per cent ventilation rule.
One pal recently suggested that for many fans, there may be a deep cultural connection with the hookah pipe, linking back thousands of years to India and the Persian and Ottoman Empires.
Whilst mulling over this column, I ventured to a shisha ‘emporium’ in Leeds for the first time in several years. The atmosphere was relaxed. Big screens played film clips and a familiar sounding bhangra infused ditty was playing away in the background.
As our communities have become more affluent and travelled further afield in the world, we have actually reconnected with something that is part of a shared history. It’s probably no coincidence that such huge swathes of the shisha smoking brigade are Muslims of South Asian Heritage. Just as the wider world pontificates on ‘Muslimness’ and identity and our place in this fraught global village, could it be
Can we really continue to ignore this ticking health time-bomb, the real effects of which will likely show themselves in 20 or 30 year’s time? Or should the selfrighteous brigade just shut up and go indulge in another, lesser evil like a fatty burger or a pint of Guinness? that a section of the ummah (small ‘u’ deliberate’) has found solace in a cultural habit that is possibly the only one that they share in common? In a world where 1.6 billion Muslims are often treated as one big homogenous mass, maybe the shisha pipe is the only way in which we can tell the world to stick its views in a pipe - and WE’LL smoke it. So what if we are inhaling dangerous levels of toxins? Everyone who is exposing themselves to it is doing so willingly. Let’s not forget, the vast majority
We could all HEAR each other talk, a great start. Ok, so I had to fork out £10 for a pipe that I wasn’t even smoking. But then, I entered the game knowing the rules. I asked my companions and other smokers what the enduring allure of the ‘hubble bubble’ was. Most admitted they are aware of the health risks - of course they are, these are intelligent professionals. Among my own group was a doctor, two public sector workers and two youth workers. “It was just there, so we did it. It was a fad,” said one smoker. “It started in Bradford about eight years ago with a nice restaurant with a separate shisha section, all before the smoking ban.” “There’s no fighting, no alcohol. It’s an alternative to the pub, a place to go and chill out. There isn’t anywhere else to go late at night,” said another. “It’s a choice I make,” added a third. “I know it’s a vice, but it’s the lesser of several evils. I know the health risks, but there’s not a lot else going on.” One person even suggested that he’d be willing to pay an extra tax to cover healthcare costs of the effects of shisha, but only if that surcharge applied to the obesity epidemic, alcohol related illnesses and other chronic, apparently preventable strains on the NHS. Additional taxation on the shisha industry itself was also mooted. But, as one commenter pointed out, perhaps the authorities would prefer some of the young people who frequent these venues to be chilling out in closed spaces rather than (potentially) causing havoc on
the streets of Leeds or Bradford. While prosecutions of shisha bar owners for flouting regulations have been steady, they certainly haven’t caused a major dent in the number of venues, In fact, for every one that closes down, two more seem to spring up in hookah hotspots like Leeds, Bradford and Manchester. The health messages ARE trickling through slowly - but are the authorities as a whole just playing lip service to the issue? A current ongoing West Yorkshire wide ‘niche tobacco’ awareness campaign focuses heavily on the harmful effects of shisha, although the effects of smokeless and chewing tobacco are also highlighted,
Some claim that one single hookah session can be equivalent to smoking between 100 and 200 normal cigarettes. But then again, they WOULD say that wouldn’t they? After all, they are probably secretly sponsored by the tobacco giants who are threatened by the very existence and economic potential of this burgeoning subculture and legitimate business in boom. Who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory?
One recent report to a Leeds City Council licensing committee said that “water-pipe smoking is a growing issue with significant health implications for the city”, however it noted that current legislation is just not good enough and “when prosecutions are taken, fines are generally low and do not discourage premises owners from operating”. The report pointed out that there is a common misconception that shisha smoking is exempt from the smoke-free legislation. So, is it the case that shisha is becoming - or has become already - another stick for the establishment to beat Muslims AND smokers with? The National Association of Shisha Bar Owners certainly seems to think so. It sets out its stall very clearly on its website, boldly accusing lawmakers of “putting 3,000 years of culture under attack” from “prohibitionist interference”. An expert quoted by the organisation says “politicised shoddy science from antismoking experts” is to blame. That position hasn’t changed for several years. But surely they can’t be suggesting we have one law for one group, and one for another? That kind of antidemocratic move would play into the hands of the far right. The argument is often that shisha bars should be exempt from the smokefree public places legislation, which has been in existence since 2006. But MPs already voted down a motion to allow private members’ clubs to be exempt. And recently, the smokefree legislation in the UK was
EXTENDED to include smoking in cars when under 16s are present, It seems that in the eternal clash of the tobacco Titans and smokefree crusaders, the latter are winning the battle if not the war. The wider health implications of shisha smoking for large sections of our community - and perhaps for a whole generation - cannot be ignored. But when we choose to live in a society where there are around 6,500 alcohol-related deaths every year, and where one expert recently described obesity as being a bigger national threat than terrorism, ‘to shisha or not to shisha’ is a choice that we must be allowed to make ourselves, for better or worse.
Perhaps it will take a little more time before we can emerge together from this halal haze. Let’s just hope it’s not when we’ve run out of time.
The health messages ARE trickling through slowly - but are the authorities as a whole just playing lip service to the issue?

Murderer who stabbed family man 120 times is jailed for life Akbar Khan, 20, lured Zafran Nawaz to an unoccupied home on Carlton Road, Birmingham on 22 May and then stabbed him repeatedly shortly after his arrival. Khan, of Carlton Road, pleaded guilty to the murder at Birmingham Crown Court and was jailed for life with a minimum of 20 years. Mr Nawaz’s family paid tribute to the ‘loving son and best friend’ who was ‘adored’ by his many nieces and nephews.

‘Zafran was a man whose life revolved

He was a loving son and best friend to his parents, a beloved brother and dedicated husband. ‘And while he never enjoyed the pleasure of becoming a father, his example as an uncle was one that his nieces and nephews looked up to, admired, respected and loved. They have taken his death particularly hard.’
Baby born in the fast lane The parents of a baby born in the back of a car on the M1 as the family headed to hospital have spoken of their ‘complete and utter shock’ at the birth. Rishan Pau was born at around 8am on Sunday 20 December

Muslim Grandfather does something meaningful this Christmas Mr Hussain with volunteers, cooking hot meals for the less fortunate in Europe
Building camp for hot meals in Vienna
Travelling kitchen Around four weeks ago Middlesbrough man, Ghafoor Hussain, 45 visited Eastern Europe on an aid visit with four tonnes of food in a van. During his visit the grandfather of three realised so much more help was required for the hundreds of families who were living in deprived conditions, many of whom who had not had a hot meal in days. So on his return back to his home town, Hussain using most of his own money bought a single decker bus and put his mechanical skills to good use. With additional help from family and friends the talented mechanic, totally stripped the bus, to transfer it into a travelling kitchen that can provide hot meals to hundreds of people at a time.
We spoke to son Adeel Hussain, 20 who described how his father had totally transformed the bus as a mobile kitchen. We were told the bus was customised with several huge stoves and pantries to store supplies which also included the addition of a water tank, that can carry 1000 litres of clean water. Adeel told Asian Sunday: “People of all backgrounds have come to help. “Ronnie helped us with the canopy, he got us the cost down so much that it has helped with financing the project.” Adeel also said “Mick and Rob helped us with the electrics and my uncle Jangir helped with the plumbing. “Thanks to everyone’s helped my father has been able to stock the
bus with 14 and a half tonnes of supplies. He is now in Vienna and together with volunteers they have already started preparing hot meals for families who are in need. Ghafoor’s daughter, Nadia Ayoub who has set up a crowd funding page for her father’s project also told Asian Sunday how proud she was of her father and the volunteers, which included doctors who have joined him on this mission. She told us that her father has always lived his whole life helping and living to support others. “He is a true inspiration and a true role model” She said “He has always taught us to count our blessings. Whenever a charity appeal came on TV during dinnertime, he would change the channel because he would
find it hard to eat while knowing people are suffering in the world. I could go on and on about his kind hearted nature. “An incident that really changed the way my dad does charity was when the earthquake hit Kashmir and Pakistan. My dad donated ten electricity generators complete with oil and wiring and got them sent by cargo, but they never left the airport and got stolen. This broke my dad’s trust in charities. So when the Syrian refugee crisis hit, my dad was adamant to deliver the aid himself with his own hands to Europe and the needy. When my dad and his colleagues arrived jn Europe and saw the level of suffering and desperation he came back even more determined and that’s when the bus project happened.” She added
The charitable mechanic aims to feed up to 15,000 people a day. In addition to this, generous donations from the crowd funding has come to just over £14,000 so far, which they hope to use to buy more supplies. Not only that, they hope to use some of this money to also help other charities such as One Ummah, a charity based in Middlesbrough who regularly run a soup kitchen. The money will go towards helping One Ummah recover supplies and donations they had lost recently during an arson attack on the warehouse they used to store donations that were due to be shipped out to Syria to be distributed among the needy affected by the ongoing conflict. Complaint about a cold kebab is on the list of most ridiculous 999 calls of 2015
Details of the calls have been released to prevent people using the number in non-emergencies.
Only call 999 if… • Somebody’s life is at risk or someone is being physically threatened. • If a crime is in progress, or if the offenders are still nearby. • When a road traffic collision cases personal injury or danger. If you need to contact the police in a nonemergency, you can call 101. They deal with stolen or damaged property, non-urgent crimes and suspected drug dealing.
Metropolitan police have revealed a list of absurd calls to the emergency 999 line. The main reason for revealing this list is to remind the public that calls to the number are for emergencies only and not for a chat as is evident from the list. 1. A woman called police to say she has just bought a kebab and it was cold.
2. Callers, who slept through their alarm and were going to be late for a flight, wanted officers to escort them to the airport. 3. A woman called stating that she was angry because she’d seen a clown in London selling balloons for £5 each. 4. Callers phoned in distress; they were driving and the low
fuel indicator light had come on.
because they were refusing to let him out for free.
5. A man called to say that his 50p coin was stuck in a washing machine at his local launderette and wanted police to retrieve it.
7. ‘Where is the best place to get a bacon sandwich right now?’ was the question asked to a 999 operator at 04:00hrs on a Saturday.
6. Man called claiming he didn’t have change for the parking. He claimed staff at the car park had kidnapped him
8. A man called 999 as he was advised to call 111 but didn’t know their number. 9. A woman called stating that
she wanted police to deal with a couple of noisy foxes outside her address as they were preventing her from sleeping. 10. A woman called asking for police to attend her property as there were men in her house trying to take her away. The men in question were, in fact, police officers who had attended her address to arrest her.

Six members of a family jailed for most ‘harrowing’ case of domestic abuse Shahena Uddin, 19, died after being severely beaten at the family home in Leavesden Road, Watford, on the night of October 10 last year, police said. Her family called an ambulance after they discovered her on the bathroom floor the next morning and told paramedics she had not felt well and collapsed. Medics noticed severe bruising on several parts of Ms Uddin’s body and called the police.
Six members of a family have been jailed for their part in what was described by a senior detective as one of the most harrowing cases of domestic abuse he had seen.
Ms Uddin’s sister-in-law Salma Begum, 33, of Leavesden Road, was convicted of murder and conspiracy to pervert the course and sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 18 years.
Her ordeal included being forced to drink toilet water and eat her own faeces. During the trial the court heard that Ms Uddin suffered severe mental and physical abuse over a prolonged period of time at the

Detective Inspector Fraser Wylie from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: ‘In all my years as a detective, this case has been possibly one of the most harrowing cases of domestic abuse I have dealt with. “How any person can inflict such violence and mental abuse on someone is beyond comprehension – and even more so when those inflicting that abuse are members of a family who were supposed to have a duty of care. “Shahena Uddin suffered unimaginable abuse both physically and mentally which was tantamount to torture. Shahena’s death must not be in vain.
Justice Spencer on Monday. Detective Inspector Fraser Wylie, used this opportunity to remind the public that we all have a duty of care to each other and we need to look at preventing people from such suffering. that is followed from measuring to fabric selection, customisation and fittings, to, ultimately, completion of the garment.
India’s most iconic; luxury-fashion brand Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur will open its doors to the international market with the launch of a debut collection in the United Kingdom in January 2016. A pioneer in the menswear luxury segment, Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur is the brainchild of design doyen Raghavendra Rathore, who is credited for reinterpreting the concept of Indian Royalty through design and luxury innovations, blending global sophistication and impeccable quality the Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur brand is driven by a holistic vision of luxury, inspired by the “old world charm” of Rajasthan in India, with a clean and modern sensibility. Renowned for cuttingedge designs and pushing the boundaries of fashion familiarity, the Raghavendra Rathore label is synonymous with the revival of the iconic Bandhgala jacket and Jodhpur Pants (Jodhpur breeches), where 1400 years of regal Jodhpur heritage has been interspersed with contemporary design. Its coterie boasts of industry stalwarts, socialites, aristocrats, celebrities and public figures across India and international markets. For its international launch, Raghavendra Rathore has curated a bespoke collection combining opulent luxury and renowned heritage to bring a traditional twist to the wardrobe of the modern man. The Equestrian Renaissance – Rathore Breeches Renowned as much for its cultural wealth as for its equestrial passion, riding breeches being its contribution to the world of fashion, Jodhpur’s flamboyant lifestyle has always throbbed with joie der verve that mixes with the sands of its legacy and makes it a magical destination. The regal game of polo has historically been associated with The Royal House of Jodhpur forming a collaborated theme that eeds a reflection of our times and much care and preservation. This further reestablishes the bond of a certain lifestyle, thereby bringing people from international backgrounds to connect with this sport. From this, the brand’s focal point is to exude the intricacies of rural craftsmanship and infuse it with contemporary design and modern aesthetics, with the central theme
A member of the Jodhpur Royal family, Raghavendra Rathore began his creative journey with the study of Renaissance Art. His path into fashion was given firm foundation at Parsons School of Design in New York, which paved the way for him to work with Donna Karan, New York (DKNY) and subsequently, Oscar de la Renta. The influences of such iconic fashion institutes gave Raghavendra Rathore the impetus, desire and devotion to launch his own fashion label in India. From his immense creativity, inimitable style and exquisite flair, so was born the Raghavendra Rathore label in 1994.
of Polo — often referred to as the ‘sport of kings’ — giving the brand a particular historical and cultural significance to Rajasthan. Iconoclastic Legacy of the Classic Rathore Bandhgala Inspired by 1400-years of rich history, the Jodhpuri Bandhgala Jacket, available in both short and long lengths, has today become synonymous with the Raghavendra Rathore Label. Worn by royalty and nobility from generation to generation, the Rathore Classic, patented Bandhgala is a global statement of sophistication and style, with the Rathore moniker symbolising culture as much as it does fashion. Designed exclusively by the atelier, it exemplifies the hallmark of Indian Heritage on a global landscape, modern Indian sophistication and the grandeur of India’s bygone era. It is truly a relic of the noble aristocracy back at the time when Maharaja Sardar Singh patronised this attire and gave it a new dimension and appeal. This fashion element is a reflection of that ethos for the brand taking 33 hours for a craftsman to immaculately tailor this timeless garment to perfection. The versatility of wearing “The Jodhpuri Bandhgala” in numerous fashions, classic or contemporary, amalgamates effortlessly the vibrancy of cool, chic glamour while anchoring legacy and tradition. It has been the brands constant endeavour
to reinvent this suit and project a contemporary yet slick appeal for the modern man and now international fashionistas can experience the richness of the bespoke Bandhgala, once enjoyed by India’s elite club of Maharajas, and today revived into thread by a royal himself.
has also perfectly introduced velvet based waistcoats to add a regal touch to any ensemble. For a more Ethnic inspired look, longer versions of waistcoats can be worn over kurta or dhoti suits, a classic ensemble.
Waistcoats and Waistcoat Sets
Kurtas, long or short, are one of the most versatile of Indian fashion items which can be worn solo or as part of an ensemble such as with waistcoats. Wear them with a pair of denims or straight cut pants for a modern Western twist. Team them with waistcoats for an Ethnic twist. The kurta is a great option for formal affairs as well as a stylish casual choice for everyday wear.
Raghavendra Rathore has crafted a signature style creation of waistcoat sets and waistcoats for men to wear as either ethnic dressing or to perfectly complement Western looks such as with tailored shirts, suits and (Jodhpuri) pants. Bright block colours or patterned fabrics can glam up a sophisticated look with soberness and richness. Raghavendra Rathore

Bespoke Tailoring Carrying on the tradition of the aristocratic tailor services, the brand specialises in giving an eastern philosophy to the meticulously customised apparel, that speaks volumes regarding the precision and care that goes behind the making of it. Techniques of tailoring have been adopted from 1400 years of handcrafting that was inimitable to the isolated Thar region. Each inspirational template is diverse as the selections in design are made depending on which house of royalty it is coming from. The intent is to work with the classic timeless fits and structuring that add authenticity and relevance to every ensemble. There is an extreme methodical process
Raghavendra Rathore cites his creative inspiration as drawing from his culturally and historically rich royal ancestry in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He brought Jodhpurs and Bandhgalas, two popular fashion exports from India, to prominence; both styles gained iconic status and consequently promoted and preserved the heritage of Rajasthan culture. Raghavendra Rathore holds the copyrights on both the styles as a means to preserve its authenticity. Speaking about the launch of the brand in the UK, Raghavendra Rathore says: “I’m excited the UK will get to experience, firsthand, the flamboyancy of the Maharaja’s of Jodhpur, transposed in time by my meticulous craftsman and presented with a dash of British elegance. The collection highlights will be Classic Bandhgala Nehru jackets, Jawar waistcoats, Jodhpur breeches and Achkans, all of which will beautifully complement the soul of London. I’m also honoured that the designs and the cuts of my rural craftsman have found a place in a global hotspot like the UK, and this means a lot to my team.” The design diversity that the atelier offers also expands to aspects of interiors, product design, accessories such as scarves and cufflinks, shoes and other areas of lifestyle, which are also due to launch in the UK later next year. In the United Kingdom, Raghavendra Rathore operates via a By Appointment Only service. For more information, please visit: http://www. rathore.com/bespoke.php

Dare I say potentially the start of another debt bubble unless we do something about it, and help is at hand with some useful tips below: A good point is to track your spending, and break it up into chunks such as food shopping, clothes, bills, car etc. work out where your pay packet is going on a monthly basis, and perhaps ban the excess i.e. 1 coffee a day could be costing you £3.00, why not make it at work instead and save £60 a month.
Mr Money Bags In terms of pensioners, well those people that have saved for retirement are getting poor returns on their investments due to the low level of interest rates. The government has decided to increase the state pension next year, which will help ease the burden
Use data gathered above to compile a realistic budget of what you are prepared to spend on each area of spending and stick to it. Whilst at the same time

Illegal food manufacturer ordered to pay £35,000 fine
for purpose. The unit was supplying a number of sweet and food stores in the West Yorkshire area including shops trading under the name of La Jawaab. On April 7, 2015 Mohammed Imran Khan pleaded guilty to offences of being unregistered and/ or unapproved at Unit 3 and also at another La Jawaab shop in his control at 155 Manchester Road, Huddersfield, together with a number of food hygiene offences. The defendant already had previous convictions from April and June 2012 for food hygiene contraventions in relation to his La Jawaab shops at 610 Huddersfield Road, Dewsbury and 44 Oak Lane, Bradford. In court, His Honour Judge Kearl QC sentenced Khan to 6 months in prison, suspended for 2 years. He assessed Mohammed Imran Khan’s benefit from his crimes as £66,277, with available assets of £35,000. An order was made in the sum of £35,000 and the defendant must pay this within 3 months or face a default prison sentence of 18 Months. Costs of £1200 were granted.
Dirty restaurant and takeaway owner prosecuted by Kirklees Council
by Alison Bellamy A man who ran food establishments in West Yorkshire without the necessary approval, has been ordered to pay a £35,000 confiscation order. Mohammed Imran Khan, of Cleveland Road, Heaton, Bradford was ordered to pay the amount at
Leeds Crown Court on December 22, 2015, at the end of an investigation into how he ran his businesses. Environmental Health Officers from Kirklees Council, working in partnership with Financial Investigators from West Yorkshire Trading Standards, began an investigation into Khan in December 2013.
Khan was the owner of a business which was operating from Unit 3, Moor End Works, Balme Road, Cleckheaton, supplying other food establishments in West Yorkshire whilst being unregistered and unapproved. As a consequence no routine Food Safety Inspections had been undertaken at the premises by the council. On December 17, 2013, a
warrant was executed at Unit 3 and a large commercial food manufacturing business was found to be in operation and a number of food safety contraventions were identified. A large quantity of unlabelled, unquantifiable meat was detained and later condemned and destroyed. Other food products were incorrectly stored and were being prepared in unsanitary conditions or with equipment not fit
Councillor Steve Hall, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member for Place, said that the positive outcome of the court case was an excellent example of partnership working with Trading Standards officers and should send a strong message to other people who might think they can get away with contravening the law. He added: “Food traders must be registered and subject to safety inspections. We will continue to prosecute in cases where we feel the health of local people is being put at risk by bad practice.”
A new business adds to the flavours of Bradford A new and innovative food business is springing up in Kirkgate in Bradford city centre thanks to Bradford Council’s incentives. Gustoso will produce healthy, convenient food such as salads, pasta and warm noodle dishes in premises close to the Kirkgate
shopping centre. The owner, Alesha Akbar, is receiving a capital grant from the Council through the Council’s new Priority Streets Scheme. It will pay for a new shop front, kitchen equipment and refrigeration equipment, display units, etc.
The Priority Streets Scheme offers grants of up to 50% of the cost of the cost of improvements and equipment, up to a maximum of £141,000 to traders willing to take on an empty shop if five key streets - Darley Street, Kirkgate, Ivegate, Rawson Square and Rawson Place.
Mrs Akbar said: “We’re delighted to be able to start up this new cafe in Bradford and hope it will become popular with office and retail workers, students and shoppers. “The incentives offered through the City Centre Growth Zone scheme
have made a real difference.” Bradford Council Leader, Coun David Green, said: “A new cafe will add to the mix at the top end of the city, giving visitors more options as to where to eat out. It’s good to see more independent businesses flourishing.”

Muslim burials can still go ahead out of hours by Alison Bellamy Fears that arrangements that ensure Muslim burials can be organised ‘out of hours’ were to be scrapped, have been allayed by the police, after a West Yorkshire MP sought assurances. Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen Valley, was approached by representatives of Batley’s Muslim Mosque Burial Committee over a suggestion that coroner’s officers in West Yorkshire would cease to be available on weekends. The move, if introduced, would impact significantly on organising
Muslim burials, which ideally take place within hours of a death. Mrs Cox said: “I’ve raised these concerns with the police and crime commissioner and have been reassured that there are no plans to change the arrangements – and that appropriate cover will certainly be in place over Christmas and the new year and beyond.” The police staff are a key part of helping burials go ahead when there are bereavements late on a Friday or over a weekend. Without them burials would have to be postponed. Mrs Cox added: “We must be on our guard however. While there are no plans to change the out of hours cover now, there is no guarantee it will not be reviewed in the future as part of the police’s programme of change as they attempt to deal with more and more cuts from the Conservative government.” Funerals in Islam (called Janazah in Arabic) follow fairly specific

rites, though they are subject to regional interpretation and variation in custom. In all cases, however, sharia (Islamicreligious law) calls for burial of the body, are preceded by a simple ritual involving bathing and shrouding the body, followed by salah (prayer). This should take place as soon as possible, preferably within hours of death. In some cases, for example where a crime has occurred or police have to investigate the circumstances surrounding a death, such as in a road accident, there can be a delay. The deceased is then taken for burial (al-Dafin). The exact manner, customs and style of the grave, the burial and so forth may vary by regional custom. Cremation is not allowed. The grave should be aligned perpendicular to the Qibla, facing towards Mecca. Relatives and loved ones then observe a threeday mourning period.

Bright future: Comedy timing of Bradford schoolboy is ‘perfect’ by Alison Bellamy A SCHOOLBOY from Bradford is in demand as a promising young actor, after winning a part on BBC1 sitcom Citizen Khan. Ubayd Rehman, 13, from Eccleshill, Bradford, made an appearance in the popular comedy series, playing Faraz, the young nephew of Mr and Mrs Khan, played by Adil Ray and Shobu Kapoor. He comes to stay with the Khan family when his parents go on holiday. The show is set in Birmingham, and follows the trials and tribulations of larger than life self-appointed Muslim community leader Mr Khan and his long suffering family. Ubayd appeared in one show.

His proud mother Makdas Rehman, said: “His confidence is just growing and growing as he gets more experience. The acting classes with Articulate here in Bradford are certainly helping and they help with auditions and what is coming up. “Ubayd absolutely loves the limelight. It was wonderful for him to appear in Citizen Khan, and you never know in future they may ask him to star again, hopefully. “He manages to fit it in with the schoolwork, but can sometimes make things a little busy. Who knows where it might lead?” He also had a role in children’s TV drama Hank Zipzer, written by American actor Henry Winkler, best known as the Fonz in 1980s comedy Happy Days, his books which draw on his experiences of

I couldn’t believe how entertaining he was; Ubayd, and the rest of the cast had the
audience in stitches! “Working in children’s casting, we know how daunting it is to perform in front of a camera, but in front of a live audience too, must have been doubly daunting. He handled the situation well and I’m sure his participation in public speaking with us, must have helped as his comedy timing was perfect. She said that Articulate

West Yorkshire experienced its worst flooding in 70 years with more than 2,000 homes in Calderdale, 1,000 in Leeds and hundreds in Bradford affected. It is believed to be the wettest December on record, with thousands of homes and businesses affected by heavy rainfall across West Yorkshire, Lancashire and North Wales. “Unprecedented” levels of rain caused rivers to burst their banks and left homes under water in York, Leeds and Manchester. A police spokeswoman said 100 soldiers were deployed to help emergency services in Calderdale and Leeds. Assistant Chief Constable Angela Williams said: “The flooding situation we have experienced in West Yorkshire is quite simply the worst we have seen in 70 years, according to our partners in the Environment Agency. “As a result we declared a major incident yesterday (Boxing Day) evening and received support from the Ministry of Defence who deployed 100 soldiers to assist with emergency and recovery efforts in Calderdale and Leeds. “I want to reassure residents that emergency services are doing all they can and we will continue to do so until this situation improves.”

Top 10 Tips to Keep Burglars at Bay this Winter It’s that time of year when we stock our homes with the latest gadgets, expensive jewellery, designer goods, and a time when we may let our guard down. The Office for National Statistics reported that the year ending June 2015 Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) estimated 750,000 incidents of domestic burglary, it’s therefore important to consider the security of your home during and following the holiday season. Although many people have contents insurance cover, nothing can compensate for the stress it causes, or replace the personal items and gifts you might have lost as a result of a burglary. NHBC, the UK’s leading warranty provider and standard setting body for new build homes, offers the following security tips to help you keep your home and possessions safe and secure. Improve the security potential of your doors It is important to have robust locks on both the front and back doors. Ensure entrance doors to your home are fitted with securely fixed locks or a multi-point locking system with at least 1000 differs (the number of possible keys for a given lock). Also ensure that you have a latch and deadlocking system. Do you have sliding back doors?
and have an anti-lift device fitted so that doors cannot be lifted from their frame from the outside. Check your window locking systems Ground floor windows and any others that are easily reached by climbing are recommended to be fitted with lockable devices/ handles which cannot be released without a key. If you own a home built in the last ten years, this may already have modern security locks Be secure, but also safe Some doors can be locked from the inside. If that’s the case with yours, and it’s locked using a key, make sure you have a spare key in a convenient place nearby, so that you can get out quickly in an emergency. Newer houses are fitted with locks on the front door which have a thumb turn on the inside to provide a quick escape without the use of a key. View outside Ensure that you have a wide angle view of the area immediately outside the main entrance door to check on callers. Newer properties may already have a through-door viewer or clear glazing either to part of the door or a convenient window which provides a view of the main entrance. You may also want to replace your front door if it looks tatty, it’s the kind of thing that will attract a burglar’s eye. Consider a light sensor… Crime can be prevented by external detection security lighting that switches on after dark when someone is nearby, illuminating the general area. It’s highly effective in deterring potential intruders and therefore definitely worth considering if your home doesn’t already have it installed. …and alarm systems
These should be secured by way of a multi-point locking system
A house alarm system acts in two ways – to deter intruders, and
detect the opening of a window or a door. Some systems can also be linked up to a mobile phone number letting the owner know the alarm has been triggered. Lock rear entry gates Make sure your back garden is as private and secure as possible. Many burglaries start at the back, where no-one can see them taking place. Keep ladders and other equipment safe Do not leave ladders, steps etc. visible in the garden, as they attract the keen eye of the burglar and makes things easy for them, so always ensure that they are kept out of sight, ideally in a locked shed or garage. If you’re away - try to make your Home look occupied! Leave the lights on in the evening (but not just hall or landing lights) or use an automatic time switch. But, if you’re away for a length of time, arrange for a
neighbour to generally keep an eye on your home while you are away.
in helping to make sure their homes and belongings are well protected.
Mark Jones, NHBC’s Head of House Building Standards, said: “There are a number of simple steps people can take to improve the security of their homes. From burglar alarms to security lights, these measures can add value to properties and offer homeowners peace of mind
“People who live in newer properties, may already have security locks, burglar alarms and security lighting included as standard. But there are also a number of simple measures people can take to keep their homes and property safe from burglars.”

WOMEN IN HISTORY: Pakistan’s first female leader, Benazir Bhutto misconduct while in office.
Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto (19532007) was the first democratically elected female leader of a Muslim country during a tumultuous life that ended with her assassination. Charismatic, striking and a canny political operator, Benazir Bhutto, 54, was reared amid the privileges of Pakistan’s aristocracy and the ordeals of its turbulent politics. Smart, ambitious and resilient, she endured her father’s execution and her own imprisonment at the hands of a military dictator to become the country’s — and the Muslim world’s — first female leader. The daughter of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) founder and Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bhutto took over as chairperson of the PPP in 1982. After her two stints as prime minister in the 1990s ended early amid charges of corruption, Bhutto spent several years in exile in London. She returned to Pakistan with plans to participate in the 2008 general election, but was killed during an attack at a PPP rally in late 2007. Benazir Bhutto was born June 21, 1953, in Karachi, SE Pakistan, the eldest child of four. After completing her early education in Pakistan, she pursued her higher education in the United States. From 1969 to 1973, she attended Radcliffe College, and then Harvard University, where she graduated with a B.A. degree in comparative government. It was then onto the United Kingdom to study at Oxford from 1973 to 1977. There, she completed a course in International Law and Diplomacy. Bhutto returned to Pakistan in 1977, and was placed under house arrest after the military coup led by General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq overthrew her father’s government. One year after Zia ul-Haq became president in 1978, her father was hanged after his conviction on charges of authorising the murder of an
Nawaz Sharif, a conservative businessman, was named prime minister. Bhutto vowed to return to office and spent the next few years trying to regain support. opponent. Her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which she inherited and became leader of following her father’s death. There was more family tragedy in 1980 when Bhutto’s brother Shahnawaz was killed in his apartment on the Riviera in 1980. The family insisted he was poisoned, but no charges were brought. Another brother, Murtaza, died in 1996 (while his sister was in power) in a gun battle with police in Karachi. Benazir moved to England in 1984, becoming the joint leader in exile of the PPP, then returned to Pakistan on April 10, 1986, to launch a nationwide campaign for ‘open elections. She married a wealthy landowner, Asif Ali Zardari, in Karachi on December 18, 1987. The couple had three children: son Bilawal and two
daughters, Bakhtawar and Aseefa. Zia ul-Haq’s dictatorship ended when he was killed in a plane crash in 1988 and Bhutto was elected prime minister barely three months after giving birth to her first child. She became the first ever female prime minister of a Muslim nation on December 1, 1988. Although Bhutto, became prime minister of Pakistan it was difficult for her to make the kinds of changes she wanted. For example, she was unable to change laws that degraded women because she feared losing the support of religious groups, many of whom believed it was “un-Islamic” for a woman to be the head of government in the first place. She also had to be careful in dealing with the military, which she depended on to help control ethnic and regional disorders and violence in Pakistan. Bhutto also had little
success in improving education and health care and in cleaning up government corruption (unlawful conduct). To her credit Bhutto took steps to restore basic human rights. Restrictions on the press were lifted, and unions and student groups were allowed to gather freely. She also won respect by outsmarting her opponents in their attempts to oust her from office. Bhutto emphasised economic growth (increase in the production, distribution, and use of goods and services) and argued for less government influence in the economy. She also demonstrated skill in winning international support for Pakistan and sought improved relations with India. This however wasn’t enough to maintain her seat as Bhutto was defeated in the 1990 election, and found herself in court defending herself against several charges of
After failing to regain power in elections held in February 1997, Bhutto claimed that the elections were fixed and said she no longer desired the prime minister’s post. In April 1999 Bhutto was sentenced to five years in prison, banned from politics for five years, and fined £5 million on charges of corruption during her last term in office. Her husband received the same sentence and had been held at a prison in Karachi since 1996. Bhutto maintained her innocence, and in April 2001 the Pakistani Supreme Court ordered new trials for both her and her husband. Despite the fact that Bhutto remained in exile from Pakistan, in autumn 2001 she travelled to India to campaign for a return to politics in her home country. At the time she planned to enter the race for prime minister of Pakistan in the October 2002 elections. In spring 2002, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf stated that Benazir Bhutto would not be allowed to become a candidate in the elections. Despite this, Bhutto continued to direct her party from abroad, being re-affirmed as PPP leader in 2002. This showed Bhutto’s resilience and the ability to maintain control and power despite adversity. Truly a woman of substance. Bhutto staged a triumphal return to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, in a bid to regain power after eight

FEATURE years in exile. President Musharraf had granted her amnesty on all corruption charges, opening the way for her return and a possible power-sharing agreement. One thing that no one can deny was Bhutto’s league of hard core loyal supporters. Whilst many had written her off, following the corruption charges in 1999, tens of thousands of her supporters gathered to greet their iconic first woman leader in Karachi. As she arrived. she raised her hands, palm upwards, in prayer. In the Pakistani tradition of blessing a journey’s beginning a copy of the Koran was held above Ms Bhutto’s head and as her foot touched the tarmac she said: “I am feeling very emotional. It is so important to step on to Pakistani soil.” Wearing a green and white shalwar kameez, Pakistan’s national colours, her right arm was bound with religious amulets and she gripped a string of pearl prayer beads. Her bulky appearance suggested that Ms Bhutto had taken the precaution of wearing a flak jacket under her outfit. “I am thankful to God, I am very
happy that I’m back in my country and I was dreaming of this day.” Shouts of “long live Bhutto” greeted her as her cavalcade moved through a sea of supporters on the way from the airport to the mausoleum of Pakistan’s founder, Mohammed Ali Jinnah. The third coming of Pakistan’s empress was facilitated with a large converted sea container, which had tinted glass bulletproof screens around the top and was said to be guarded by “Benazir’s Janbaz” (Martyr Force), a 5,000-strong private army that had been drawn from the ranks of her party. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all red carpet as Bhutto’s homecoming was hit by a suicide attack, killing 136 people. She only survived after ducking down at the moment of impact behind her armoured vehicle. After the bombing Bhutto and her husband asked Musharraf for greater security, including tinted windows, jammers for bombs, private guards, and four police vehicles. These calls were echoed by three U.S. Senators who wrote to Musharraf. Bhutto also tried to obtain private security personnel, approaching both the U.S.-based
Blackwater and UK-based Armor Group. However, the Pakistani government refused to give visas to the foreign security contractors. Despite this, American diplomats provided Bhutto with confidential U.S. intelligence on threats against her. Even today Bhutto’s supporters and the Pakistani government dispute whether or not she was provided adequate protection. However, following so many near death experiences Bhutto was in the end killed when an assassin fired shots and then blew himself up after an election campaign rally in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007. The attack also killed 28 others and wounded at least another 100. The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed a rally of thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, eight miles south of Islamabad. Bhutto’s cause of death has been much discussed and debated. Some commentators suggested that this debate was motivated by attempts to define Bhutto’s legacy: perhaps Bhutto would be considered a martyr if she died by gunshot, but not if she died by hitting her head following a bomb blast. Others asserted that the arguments against a death by gunshot were intended to blunt criticism that she was not adequately protected.

Initial reports based on Pakistani Interior Ministry information reported that Bhutto was killed by a gunshot wound to the neck. Rehman Malik, a security adviser for Pakistan People’s Party, suggested that the killer opened fire as Bhutto left the rally and that he hit her in the neck and chest before he detonated the explosives he was wearing. Javed Cheema, an interior ministry spokesman, stated that her injuries were caused either by her having been shot or from pellets packed into the detonated bomb that acted as shrapnel. On 28 December, however, the cause of Bhutto’s death became less clear. Pakistan’s Interior Ministry announced that they now felt Bhutto’s death was as a result of a neck fracture sustained when she ducked or fell into her vehicle and hit the sunroof catch immediately after the gunshots but later reported her cause of death as a skull fracture. According to an Associated Press report, the Ministry stated “Bhutto was killed when she tried to duck back into the vehicle, and the shock waves from the blast knocked her head
Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in 2007 following an exhile of 8 years into a lever attached to the sunroof, fracturing her skull.” The Ministry further added, in contradiction of the official hospital account, that Bhutto suffered no gunshot or shrapnel injuries and that all gunshots missed her. Pakistan People’s Party spokesman Farhatullah Babar rejected claims that Bhutto’s death was caused by an accident. Bhutto’s lawyer and a senior official in the Pakistan People’s Party, Farooq Naik, said that the report was “baseless” and “a pack of lies”. He went on to support the view that the cause of death was two bullets hitting Bhutto in the abdomen and the head. An anonymous Toyota official also rejected the notion that she could have even hit the lever based on its location in the car (a Toyota Land Cruiser). On 8 February 2008, investigators from Scotland Yard concluded that Benazir Bhutto died after hitting her head as she was tossed by the force of a suicide blast, not from an assassin’s bullet. However, as quoted in a New York Times article, “It is unclear how the Scotland Yard investigators reached such conclusive findings absent autopsy results or other potentially important evidence that was washed away by clean-up crews in the immediate aftermath of the blast.” In the report, UK Home Office pathologist Nathaniel Cary said that while a gunshot wound to her head or trunk could not be entirely excluded as a possibility, “the only tenable cause for the rapidly fatal head injury in this case is that it occurred as the result of impact due to the effects of the bomb-blast.” The findings were consistent with the Pakistani government’s explanation of Bhutto’s assassination, an account that had been greeted with disbelief by Bhutto’s supporters. Hundreds of thousands of
mourners paid last respects to former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on December 28, 2007 as she was buried at her family’s mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the southern province of Sindh. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced three days of mourning. Bhutto’s husband, Asif Ali Zardari, her three children and her sister Sanam attended the burial. Bhutto was buried alongside her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first popularly elected prime minister who was later on executed by hanging. The shooting and bombing attack on the charismatic former prime minister plunged Pakistan into turmoil. Furious supporters rampaged through several cities, torching cars, trains and stores in violence that left at least 23 dead. Pakistan’s election commission announced January 2, 2008 that parliamentary elections would be postponed until February 18, a delay of six weeks. Bhutto reportedly had been planning to give two visiting American lawmakers a 160-page report accusing the Musharraf government of taking steps to rig the 8 January vote. In an interview with a leading tabloid, Bhutto had said that someday the people shall rise to free the nation from dictatorship, poverty, subordination, and lies. “I believe that day will come sooner than later.” The ‘daughter of Pakistan said. People say “she shouldn’t have exposed herself to dangers” Sure, they are making a point. But they forget she had chosen a lifestyle that traded safety and security for dreams and destiny for her people. In her final sacrifice she made an ultimate point proving nothing else mattered to her but the cause she lived and died for. Nothing really mattered…

FILM
Piku Release Date: May 8, 2015
Tamasha
Director: Shoojit Sircar Cast: Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan
Badlapur
Story, screenplay and dialogues: Juhi Chaturvedi
Release Date: 20 February 2015
Who would have thought that a Bollywood film, which is based on the concept of ‘motions’ will be able to charm the audiences? The magic of Shoojit Sircar’s direction gave us Piku and some solid performances from the film. Not only were the two hours entertaining, it also gave us a good chemistry between the unusual pair of Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone. Piku Banerjee (Deepika Padukone) is a Bengali architect residing in Delhi, along with her 70-year-old father, Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan). Bhashkor has problems with chronic constipation and traces every problem’s root to his bowel movements. His habits often lead to quarrels with the servants, and also irritates Chhobi Mashi (Moushumi Chatterjee), who often visits them. Piku loves her father and, as her mother has died, takes good care of him, but gets extremely irritated with him at times because of his eccentricities. Her colleague, Syed Afroz (Jisshu Sengupta) is a good friend, and she is a regular client of Syed’s friend, Rana Chaudhary’s (Irrfan Khan) taxi business. Rana has his own family problems with his mother and sister. Piku wants to sell their ancestral home in Kolkata, Champakunj, but Bhashkor objects vehemently, and decides to go to Kolkata. Piku has to comply in accompanying him, since she cannot let him travel alone. Bhashkor brings up his constipation problem and decides to travel by road. Due to Piku being very problematic with other drivers of Rana, they back away before Piku’s trip. Piku, disappointed with the agency decides to book a flight, but soon, Rana arrives at their home to take the family to Kolkata himself, without informing his family about the trip. On the way, the group encounters many incidents, including Rana on the verge of losing patience due to Bhashkor’s fussy behaviour and his constipation. Deepika’s performance was praised, as it’s not an easy feat being in the same frame as Amitabh Bachchan and matching his performance. The film did great business at the box office and re-affirmed Deepika’s capabilities as an actor.
Director: Sriram Raghavan Cast: Varun Dhawan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam, Divya Dutta Story, screenplay and dialogues: Sriram Raghavan and Arijit Biswas Varun Dhawan is one of the most adored actors from the new lot and his fan following is huge. Known for his romantic films like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Main Tera Hero and the successful movie Student of the Year, he has charmed his way into Bollywood, often being called the chocolate boy of B-town. But the young Dilwala cast off that image and dared to do something dark, edgy and gripping in Badlapur. Inspired by a real-life incident, Badlapur is about two men who are haunted by a crime that one of them committed. Raghu (Varun Dhawan) is an advertising executive with a picture perfect life that is savaged unexpectedly when his wife (Yami Gautam) and son encounter the bank robber Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) Raghu is a man of past and 15 years later, Raghu gets to know who pulled the trigger to kill his family. The journey of revenge and blood bath begins. He tries every possible means to get even with Laik, including forced sex with Laik’s prostitute girlfriend Jhimli (Huma Qureshi) to humiliate him. Laik is sentenced to twenty year’s prison term where he makes several unsuccessful jail-break-attempts. Fifteen years later, Raghu ‘facilitates’ Laik’s premature exit from the jail. The twistsin-the-plot continues, ensuring a roller coaster thrilling ride. Despite a very unconventional storyline and unusual characters, thanks to amazing performances a gripping storyline and powerful dialogues the film emerged a box office success and gained critical acclaim.
Release Date: November 27, 2015 Director: Imtiaz Ali Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone Story, screenplay and dialogues: Imtiaz Ali Imtiaz Ali began working on Tamasha after Rockstar, collaborating once again with Ranbir Kapoor and A. R. Rahman. Deepika Padukone was confirmed as the lead female in September 2013. The working title of the project was The Window Seat and was later changed to Tamasha. Although the film released following Ranbir’s string of flops and with its own initial release date issues, the film stood on its own thanks to the unique and powerful story telling of Imtiaz Ali. Love stories are very common in Bollywood where boy meets girl and the turbulent times they have to go through to unite. Tamasha has the same genre for sure but is told very differently and leaves the audience impressed with the maturity of its story telling. Tamasha Tara (Deepika Padukone), a young Indian girl finds herself stranded on the French island of Corsica after she loses all her possessions. In this time of distress, she meets Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) an Indian backpacker who extends to help her. Ved, drawn to theatrics sets a condition to make their rendezvous more interesting. During their time together they are obliged not to disclose their real identities to each other only to make their trip unpredictable. For the next week, the two spend an indulgent time in Corsica having the time of their lives, until she finds a way to return back to India. Four years later, Tara finds Ved again. This time though, she finds him ordinary and lacking in charm that she remembered him for and ultimately rejects his proposal. Ved is unable to handle the rejection which further triggers a chain of events. He realises the instincts that Tara missed in him and this now leads him on a journey of selfdiscovery as he sets out to pursue Tara. Tamasha, did good at the box office and was a savior for Ranbir, as his first successful film of 2015 and proved further that his pairing with Deepika is still a hit.

he scored for FC Goa with a direct free kick, Joffre in the euphoria of the moment took off his shirt in celebration as Goa assumed they would lift the trophy, especially having taken the lead with only a few minutes left on the clock. FC Chennaiyin had other ideas though. Mendoza chased a lofted ball into the box, his presence caused FC Goa keeper Kattimani to fumble the ball into his own net, which stunned the crowd into near silence. Mendoza was causing havoc in the Goa box again, moments after causing havoc for the Goa goalkeeper, Mendoza waltzed past Gregory Arnolin to calmly slot the ball past a despairing dive of Kattimani into the net, which sent Chennaiyin into raptures.

Tiran The Victim of a Smash and Jab as Ayoub El-Jabbar Comes Out On Top by Ayyaz Malik Sri Lankan Mixed Martial Arts Fighter (MMA) and instructor Tiran Thakshala who has been an MMA champion and boasts of being a 2014 United Arab Emirates Maktoum Champion in the 70kg weight division, was looking to add to his achievements with a fight against Ayoub El-Jabbar.
Tiran Thakshala
Thakshala has been beaten fighters in the past that many
would have expected him to have lost against, but such is the battling qualities of the Sri Lankan he has proved people wrong. The now American based fighter who moved to America to further his career, professionally has a record of two losses and two victories. The 27-year old Tiran was looking to improve on that record when he came up against Ayoub El Jabar of Morocco. The fight which was on 18 December in Al-Ain, the United Arab Emirates, was where the Sri
Lankan fighter has enjoyed some past success as we know. Sadly, though for Thakshala this wasn’t one of those nights, Tiran was sadly, beaten in the second round. Although it may not have been the result that Tiran Thakshala wanted, the Los Angeles instructor and MMA fighter should be proud of his achievements. This fight and Tiran’s good work teaching MMA, will hopefully encourage more people to get into
the sport, the Los Angeles-based fighter has proved people wrong before and although there was no win here, just the fact we are highlighting Tiran’s Thakshala’s inspirational journey where the 27 year-old moved to America from his native Sri Lanka , a new country to help develop his skills deserves admiration in itself. Mubz’s Baj of Honour by Ayyaz Malik British Muay Thai Fighter Mubz Bajwa did his country proud by capturing the Muay Thai International Championship in Pakistan. The Britain who faced Thai opponent Singh Noi in his country of origin Pakistan eased any nerves by sweeping aside his opponent in the fourth round. This fight against Noi was the biggest fight of its kind ever to be held in Pakistan and in fact that first time that the Rochdale-born fighter had fought overseas. Mubz
Bajwa does boast of winning national titles in the past, but this fight would have been a different challenge altogether. The title win for Bajwa adds to the impressive world record that the 37-year-old managed to achieve. On 13, December 2014 Mubz Bajwa successfully attempted a Guinness world record for “most consecutive Thai boxing rounds sparred”. That meant full contact to elbows & knees to the face). The record now stands at 111 rounds and that took seven hours and 23 minutes to complete.
Sometimes somethings in life are ‘written in the stars’ as they say and for Mubz, it seemed like that was the case after the Red Band qualified instructor was able to put championship gold around his waist almost a year to the day of achieving that record-breaking feat. Reacting to his fantastic achievement of winning the international Championship, Mubz had this to say: “It was an amazing experience and it’s something that I would love to do again,”.

Dan-Tastic by Ayyaz Malik Liverpool youngster Yan Dhanda has become the first player of Indian descent to sign a professional contract with the club. Birmingham-born Dhanda, 17 was signed from Premier League rivals West Brom in 2013. To highlight the scale of the Birmingham-born playmaker’s achievements, Yan joins established Premier League player Neil Taylor of Swansea as being one of only two players of Indian descent currently playing in England’s top flight. There have been other Indian players to have played in the top flight such as Michael Chopra of Newcastle United, but with all due respect, this surely tops the lot. Liverpool are 18-time domestic champions, the second most successful domestically in English history. It’s a very impressive feat indeed for the former West Brom player who won the up and coming player category in the 2013 Asian Football Awards. Yann Dhandha is a player with undoubted talent, Dhandha has played for England
at under 16 and under 17 level. Hopefully, Yan Dhanda will be given the chance to truly fulfil his potential, we feel you can reach the very top (play for England and get into Liverpool’s first team). Greatness awaits you, Yan! We here at Asian Sunday wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Arsenal Give City A ‘Citizen’s Arrest’
Arsenal’s Theo Walcott scores against Manchester City
Olivier Giroud gives Arsenal their second goal against Manchester City
by Ayyaz Malik Goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud helped Arsenal potentially deal a huge blow to Manchester City’s title hopes, by earning a deserved 2-1 victory over the side that many expect to be their main challenge for this year’s Premier League title race. Visitors City were able to call upon inspirational duo Sergio Aguero and David Silva after both have been out of action recently with injury. As for hosts Arsenal, they had to still do without the inspirational Alexis Sanchez who is stepping up his return from injury. In a match that was crucial for both sides to win due to leaders Leicester impressively beating Everton, understandably the game was a bit tense to start with. The visitors did have
plenty of the ball but didn’t look dangerous with it. Arsenal were looking solid and seemed content to hit City on the counter. The home side did have a momentary lapse of concentration in the first half and could have fallen behind. Man City who were struggling to get behind Arsenal’s defence, nearly were able to capitalise on the usually reliable Lauren Koscielny’s mistake. That mistake by Koscielny allowed City danger man Kevin De Bruyne to get behind the Arsenal defence, but sadly for City the Belgian missed the target when attempting to score from a relatively tight angle. That miss by Manchester City would cost them dearly. Yaya Toure who struggled in the first half to get into the game was ruthlessly caught out of position which allowed Arsenal’s man of
the moment Mesut Ozil to set up Theo Walcott, who sent an unstoppable shot into the top corner, which left City keeper Joe Hart with no chance. The city knew they would need to attack and maybe take more chances as they look to get back in the game. With City looking to get forward in search of an equaliser, the visitors were always going to be vulnerable to conceding a second - and that’s what happened. Arsenal again through an assist by Mesut Ozil would take the lead. The German midfielder who has been in scintillating form this year, set up French striker Olivier Giroud who expertly placed the ball through England keeper Joe Hart’s legs to make the score 2-0. The Gunners went in at the break two goals to the good and dare one say, in control of the
game. City made a change at the start of the second half by bringing on Raheem Sterling for Fabian Delph, but actually Arsenal were creating better chances on the break in the second half. The rejuvenated Joel Campbell who after so long in the Arsenal wilderness is starting to look like the world class player we all knew he would be, had two good chances to put the game to bed. Campbell first blazed over when well placed and then drew a brave save from Joe Hart. The Gunners did have other chances through Aaron Ramsey who again drew a brave stop from Joe Hart. These missed chances were threatening to cost Arsenal. When City did grab a goal back through Yaya Toure who beautifully placed a left-footed shot into Petr Cech’s top corner,
Published by RF Publishing Ltd, 1 Edmund Street, Bradford, BD5 1HA Company Reg No. 9615401
it was sadly for the Blues too little too late. Man City did look a better side when Toure was given the licence to move further forward and go on his trademark driving runs. Despite City looking really strong in the last quarter of the game, Arsenal held on for a vital three points. Defeat for visitors Man City means that this is the fifth time they have lost in the Premier League this year and no team has won the title after losing five games before Christmas.
As for Arsenal they have now closed the gap on Leicester to two points and have extended their lead over Manchester City to five points. As significant as that lead is over Manchester City, it’s fair to say this year’s title race isn’t over until it’s over.
