A diamond tycoon based in Gujarat India has gifted 400 flats and 1,260 cars to his employees, ahead of the Hindu festival Diwali as a reward for meeting company targets.

The businessman, Savji Dholakia, who owns Hare Krishna Exports in Surat told reporters ‘Our aim is that each employee must have his own home and car in the next five years. So we have decided to gift cars, homes and jewellery to employees.

He added that the rewards are to

Pound coin gets a new look.

The pound coin is about to undergo a massive new makeover. According to the Treasury the new pound will be dodecagon shaped So, it will no longer be round, but be 12 sided.

The new pound comes into circulation from March 2017, and businesses are being urged to prepare ahead of the new pound coins’ launch.

Cash-handling firms and those that operate vending machines have been directed to a website – thenewpoundcoin.com – to help guide them through the transition as part of a campaign.

The Royal Mint and the Government will take the circular 30-year-old pound coin out of circulation, with the new version featuring 12 sides.

David Gauke, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: ‘The pound as we know it will not be around for much

longer.

‘The introduction of this new £1 coin will be a highly significant event and we are working with the Royal Mint to ensure key industries are ready and to ensure a smooth transition.’

Some of the measures businesses are being advised to put in place include adapting or upgrading equipment so they can handle the new coin, training their staff on the features of the new £1 coin and making arrangements with their bank to return the current and new coins in separate packaging.

Adam Lawrence, chief executive of the Royal Mint, said: ‘We would encourage business owners to visit the website as soon as possible to find out how the new £1 coin could affect their business and what steps they need to take to prepare for the launch of the coin in March 2017.’

The Government claims that the new

coin will be the ‘most secure of its kind in the world’ and will combat counterfeiters who have around 45 million counterfeit £1 coins currently in circulation.

New security features include a hologram-like image that changes from a £ symbol to the number 1 when the coin is seen from different angles.

McDonald's workers filmed punching 'racist' customer who 'called them f****** P****'

Three employees from a McDonald’s branch in Bow have been suspended after footage emerged of them kicking and punching a customer for reportedly racially abusing them.

The footage, captured at 9.30pm on Saturday night at the Payne Road branch, shows three employees throwing kicks and punches just outside the restaurant.

Another employee can then be seen swinging punches towards the man’s head before he stands up again and appears to say something directed at the staff.

At this point a third employee, who appears to be holding back colleagues, lashes out by punching the customer in the face.

Witnesses reported that the customer had persistently made racist remarks towards the staff.

The video begins as the customer is heard shouting ‘f****** P**is’ after several staff came out from behind the counter and joined another who threw him out of McDonalds.

A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said it will be taking disciplinary action against the staff 'as a matter of urgency', and all three employees have been suspended pending an investigation into the incident

The middle-age customer can be heard shouting: "You wanna go down that road?" before a worker in a white shirt and tie, thought to be a manager, then hits the man on the head.

“We take incidents like this very seriously, and while an internal investigation is undertaken, we have suspended all employees involved in this incident.

One employee approaching the man, dressed in a dark jacket and blue jeans, grabs him by the collar and pushes him to the ground.

“This is now a police investigation, and we cannot provide any further comment.”

A police spokesman said officers had been made aware of the incident.

She added: “No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing. Detectives from Tower Hamlet’s Community Safety Unit are investigating and would like to speak to the victim and anyone who witnessed the incident.”

The incident comes just one month after a beautician was jailed for nine months for assaulting two sisters as they queued in a McDonald's in Canterbury, Kent.

In September, Emily Gibbs, 23, left two sisters injured - one with a broken elbow - after launching an attack after one of her friends was accused of pushing into the McDonald's queue in Kent.

The 'burger rage' incident was caught on CCTV and shown to a judge at Canterbury Crown Court.

Gibbs pleaded guilty to two assaults and was jailed for nine months.

Plans to transform cash and carry into a supermarket denied by planning officials.

Proposals to transform Mullaco cash and carry, from a warehouse into a supermarket on Purlwell Lane in Batley have been knocked back by planning officials Mullaco Foods submitted an application to convert their building from a warehouse to mixed use set-up comprising a warehouse, food processing, cash and carry and specialist food store, with the formation of a car park.

However, the site attracted several complaints with reports of cars blocking the road and forklifts using the busy main road to unload goods vehicles.

A few residents and councillors spoke out at the meeting against the application put forward by Yousuf Mulla of Mullaco.

Councillors deferred a decision on the application to allow a clear transport plan to be put in place to address fears over parking issues.

The planning committee insisted that they did not want to close the business due to the potential loss of 25 jobs; however, a report recommended councillors refuse the application as it has “failed to demonstrate that adequate servicing facilities can be provided to serve the intensified use and avoid conflict between different users of the car park at times of deliveries and movement of goods.”

Residents met with Mullaco officials following the last meeting in an attempt to reach a compromise but were unsuccessful.

One of the main concerns of objectors was how deliveries would be received at the store, as a number of alleged instances have been reported to highways officials

where forklifts have used the main road to unload lorries.

The firm responded by saying that deliveries would be made to Global Storage and Logistics on Soothill Lane in Batley before a van collected the goods and transferred them to Mullaco.

Cllr Fazila Fidia (Lab, Batley East) spoke in support of those objecting the plans. She said: “I have had a number of complaints from residents and it has got to the point where I really do feel for them. They have seen firsthand the injustice of what is going on.

“I am not satisfied with the information provided by Mullaco regarding what they will do in regards to deliveries. We need to think about residents.”

Student union lambasted for choosing Zayn Malik and Sadiq Khan to front Black History Month

The president of the student union of Kent has apologised to students and the organisers of Black History Month after picking singer Zayn Malik and the Mayor of London as poster boys for Black History Month.

Despite the university’s grovelling apology, students described the mistake as “an absolute non-apology” and a “national embarrassment”.

The student union at Kent University said they aimed to “empower” students through its Black History Month, where it chose a number of public figures to represent diversity, at a number of events throughout October.

Benjamin Smith wrote: “At this point Kent Union has become a national embarrassment: “From what I’m seeing, this post doesn’t really cover the extent of the offense you’ve caused and comes across as a bit patronising.”

However, the university’s students union has become a “national embarrassment”.

Devante Wallace added: “It’s not just about the image shared, it’s the fact you have the audacity to try and bundle all non-white culture into black history month as if were not important enough to be represented individually. It’s offensive to all ethnic groups.”

Students at Kent University pointed out that that neither Malik nor Khan are black and are both from British Pakistani families.

Khan was born in Tooting, south London after his parents migrated from Pakistan to Britain. Ex-One Direction heart-throb Malik was born in Bradford, in 1993 to Pakistani/English parents.

Kent Union president Rory Murray apologised to students who were “upset, uncomfortable or offended”.

Official UK organisers for Black History Month said they were “deeply disappointed” by the university.

Other names on the list include Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Trevor McDonald, Shirley Bassey and Arthur Wharton, Britain’s first black professional footballer.

He said: “I want to apologise on behalf of Kent Union to any individuals who were upset, uncomfortable or offended by the image shared.

Seeking to clarify his comments further, Kent Union president Rory Murray said: “As a students’ union we are led by our members; over 2,000 volunteers who give up their time to run campaigns and events.

Terrified teenager pleaded with man who abused her outside popular nightclub

A terrified victim begged ‘don’t do this’ to a man who sexually assaulted her outside a well-known nightclub in London.

The 19-year old attempted to leave the Tiger Tiger nightclub in Leicester Square, but instead used a fire exit and found herself adjacent to a neighbouring communal building.

The victim contacted the club about the attack who passed information on to the police.

“So I just went to my room mate and cried because I had to get it off my chest,” she added.

Speaking about the impact of the frightening attack, the victim explained how she did not want to tell her parents as she felt it would affect them psychologically and they would want her to come home straight away.

“I hate that it happened, but I fought the guy off and I was glad I did because I do not want him to do worse to someone else.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police confirmed the nature of the incident: “At around 1.30am on on Saturday, 17 September, the victim had tried to leave Tiger Tiger nightclub in Haymarket when she was followed by the 33-year-old offender.”

The victim was then pursued by Yathukulan Paskaramoorthy, from Brent in London, who then attacked her by grabbing the victim and pushing her to the floor before subjecting her to a serious sexual assault.

The victim fought back and said: “There is a camera, don’t do this, don’t do this to me, you’ll get caught.”

Paskaramoorthy did not speak to the victim during the attack and police have learnt that there has been no interaction

Investigating officer, detective Constable Ben Lucas, from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse command at the Met, said: “This was a nasty attack on a vulnerable young woman that has

left her very distressed and fearful to go out with friends.

“I would like to praise her for her courage in coming to us and helping us to bring Paskaramoorthy to justice.

“I would also like to thank the staff at Tiger Tiger for all their help with the investigation.”

Paskaramoorthy was seen on CCTV following the woman through the fire exit and leaving the building shortly after.

Footage also showed him entering the club and having his ID scanned at the door, and Paskaramoorthy was also found to have used his Oyster Card nearby.

Paskaramoorthy pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to one count of sexual assault by penetration at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday (October 26) and will be sentenced at the same court on Wednesday November 23.

Government prepares overhaul of the sick-note system which could see long term-disabled people hurried back into employment.

The Government is planning a major overhaul of the way claimants for disability benefits are assessed in drive to help more people back into work.

Works and Pensions Secretary Damian Green on Monday announced the launch of a consultation on reform of the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) tests.

The revamp comes amid concerns that while those most in need of assistance receive the Employment Support Allowance (EAS), they get low levels of support from Jobcentre Plus, even though some may be able to find work with the right assistance.

The consultation will look at how people receiving EAS can get the ‘quality support’ they need to get back into employment without putting their benefits at risk while they look for a job.

The overhaul also comes in the wake

of Mr Green’s earlier announcement that people with severe, long-term health conditions will no longer have to be reassessed for their benefits.

Mr Green told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We need to change across the system so we will be changing so it’s no longer just a binary assessment... much more personalised.”

Saying he did not want to “categorise” people, he added that he wanted to change the “mindset” of businesses: “We want them to realise that there’s a huge pool of talented people who are disabled and want to work and can contribute fully in the workplace.”

Mr Green said: “We’ve got historically high employment levels. We want to spread that so everyone can enjoy the revolution that we have seen in job creation in the last few years.”

The Department for Work and Pensions places claimants assessed eligible for ESA in either the “work-related activity group” or “support group”.

The work-related activity group means officials have decided a claimant’s disability or health condition currently means they are unable to have a job but are capable of making some effort to find employment.

They receive up to £102.15 a week in ESA payments while attending employment-focused interviews and training. From April 2017, payments will fall to £73.10 for new claimants, bringing the rate into line with Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Solicitor paralysed by cycling accident sues mountain bike instructor for £4m

A solicitor who was left paralysed after falling off a mountain bike whilst partaking in a mountain bike course is suing the instructor for £4 million.

Asif Ahmed, paid £79 for the beginners’ course at Surrey Hills cyclists’ paradise complex over four years ago. It is alleged, that as the session progressed, Mr Ahmed, a bio-technologist, engineer, barrister and solicitor was riding over “clumpy” ground and proceeded to fall over the handlebars and hit his head.

Before the accident, Mr Ahmed went to the gym three or four times a week and played cricket every Sunday.

He had been riding a mountain bike for several years but this was the first time he had any training.

Although experienced in cycling and mountain biking, he was a novice to “rough terrain” and “descents”.

Mr Justice Jeremy Baker said the real issue was “whether Mr MacLean sufficiently enabled Mr Ahmed, by training and the like, to complete the slope with safety”.

However, Mr Burton claimed the instuctor “progressed this group too fast” and had a “minimalist” and “lazy form of teaching”.

But Mr MacLean denies all blame, saying that Mr Ahmed rode down the ‘wrong part of the track’ and then, on a second attempt, ‘made exactly the same error’.

Mr MacLean however, has refuted the claim, insisting he did not pressure riders to go beyond their safe limits and that he did not use a “lazy form of teaching” or that “his instruction on this occasion was woefully inadequate,”

“I am 100 per cent sure he made the same mistake twice,” he told the court.

I was surprised at the time. It has been on my mind for four-and-a-half years and I am absolutely positive it happened.”

As opposed to being “cavalier or gungho”, Mr MacLean’s lawyers maintain he has not put any pressure on his students to go beyond their safe limits, insisting instead that the course offered to teach riders how to tackle “technically demanding terrain in a safe and controlled manner”.

However, Frank Burton QC, for Mr Ahmed, told the High Court Mr Ahmed had been encouraged to “descend the

Government’s student deportation programme in disarray after appeal court rules against Home Office

A government deportation programme aimed at ordering foreign students from the UK on the basis of unconfirmed evidence has been shelved, after the appeal court ruled against the Home Office.

The decision to quietly drop the legal challenge is said to be a blow for Prime Minister, Theresa May, who presided over the department issuing ‘flimsy evidence’ to threaten tens of thousands of foreign students with detention and deportation.

The Home Office argued in a court case that thousands of students had fraudulently completed English language tests. Tellingly however, the government was unable to point to any expert evidence substantiating its accusations.

put forward as proof of student fraud, were dismissed by the court as lacking “qualifications or expertise, vocational or otherwise, in the scientific subject matter of these appeals”.

However, the government’s appeal was dismissed as “fundamentally misconceived”.

The Asian Standard spoke to one British wife and her husband, who applied for further leave to remain as a spouse.

However, one sentence, towards the end of the rejection letter, was of particular concern: ‘This action gives rise to considerations of such weight as to justify separation from your child.’

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, initially were under the impression that their application would be a formality. Her husband had already been granted leave once and they were married with a child.

“We were shocked at how people get away with this sort of thing. We had no idea it would affect us,” said the woman, Their application was subsequently rejected; her husband, who had taken

It is currently unclear whether other students accused of fraud under the programme will be able to use the judgement in their cases.

When contacted by The Asian Standard, a Home Office spokesperson said: “We will review the full determination in due course. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Parents searching for school places are used to scouring league tables and Ofsted ratings to find the best schools in their local area. But do these rankings really give a true picture of what school life will be like for their children?

One suggestion by a former headteacher was for children’s wellbeing to be measured more effectively in schools. Anthony Seldon, a university head and mental health campaigner, said school league tables should start to include measures of well-being to help tackle an “epidemic of mental health” problems in schools across the UK. But the idea of introducing wellbeing rankings that would mimic exam league tables has been met with mixed responses by those in education.

Below, two experts give their thoughts on the idea.

‘League tables are crude and misleading’ Jessica Deighton is the deputy director of the Evidence Based Practice Unit at University College London and the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families The reality of children’s mental health is deeply worrying – at least two children in every primary school class will have a diagnosable mental health condition and one in eight will have one or more mental health conditions at any time. The case for change is clear. But the call made by Seldon to address this issue using well-being league tables is not the answer.

Ranking schools on the basis of pupils’ survey responses is dangerous as it risks oversimplifying the picture of schools’ support of mental health and well-being. It also runs the risk of a well-being measure being used as another stick to beat some schools with. Or for schools with a different type of intake – such as those with a smaller proportion of special educational needs, or with a wealthy catchment area – to bask in effectively unearned kudos for their “well-being performance”.

Instead Ofsted should be encouraged to actively assess schools on their mental health and well-being policies and action.

Some schools are doing fantastic work in this area – and it is not necessarily recognised or credited – but these practices are by no means uniform across schools. Despite a new inspection framework being introduced, in practice Ofsted reports still barely mention mental health and well-being. And unless mental well-being becomes part of the inspection framework in a very concrete sense, the patchy practice and uncertainty will endure.

But there are other things that can be done. Teachers should receive mental health training as part of their formal education to effectively support their students. Schools should also be using tried and tested well-being tools to understand the needs of their students and evaluate their practice.

As well as holding schools more accountable for what they are doing to support pupil mental health and wellbeing, specific monitoring of policies and practices around mental health and wellbeing in schools by Ofsted will also help to incentivise schools to have progressive policies and programmes in place.

‘Benefits for staff and students’ Rachel Dodge is a researcher at Cardiff Metropolitan University interested in enhancing well-being in further education students.

Although there may be many arguments against the measuring of well-being and the existence of school league tables, there is no denying that both are here to stay. So even though there has been some concern about measuring well-being there is a growing consensus in academia, as well as policy, that the question is not whether to measure well-being, but how. And at a time when exam league tables in England are due to be overhauled, there is a strong argument that the inclusion of a

measure of well-being would be a useful addition.

Seldon made a clear point: “As long as the only metric on which schools are being assessed is their exam performance, our schools will never have the incentive to take well-being as seriously as they should”.

This stems from the concern that school league tables lead schools to place their energy and focus onto what is being measured. So if well-being is not included as a measurement there is a danger that it could be sidelined or ignored by schools. But by including well-being as a measure it would gain equal status with academic achievement – something that Seldon

Research from a number of wellbeing programmes has highlighted that the delivery of these programmes led to increased teacher wellbeing and job satisfaction.

In my own research, teachers who delivered a ten-week intervention programme to enhance student well-being, noted how they had started to implement some of the well-being strategies into their own life – such as reassessing their own sleep patterns, as well as considering how their internal thought processes affected the way they felt in their jobs.

Making it clear that an increased focus on well-being in schools could only lead to benefits for our education system and those in it.

Knock at the door I was scared. I knocked on the door and waited.

The street was a close-knit community of terraced houses, and as I waited could hear laughter from the lads working in a nearby garden, building a porch.

The door opened. It was a young, Asian man in his twenties, wearing a skull cap and dressed all in white. He had a kind, gentle face and must have wondered who I was.

I told him I was a journalist and was so sorry to disturb him. He knew immediately why I was there. He didn’t say anything. It was awkward, but still he listened.

For a journalist, it is part of the job. It is known as ‘the doorknock’, in the trade, where you literally knock on someone’s door to speak to them about a story you are writing.

It gives them a chance to comment, if they wish. Usually I try to explain that the story might help them. Occasionally, over the years, I have had a door slammed in my face, sometimes with accompanying obscenities.

Quite often, the story can be breaking news, which had been the case in this story a few months earlier. I was re-visiting the house, to see if there was an update.

This particular family was in limbo as it was thought their teenage son had ‘run away’ to Syria. They had not heard anything from him for many months. I wondered how they were coping? And with no word from the authorities or Governments involved, and no clues to his whereabouts, it was a worrying time, and probably still is.

At the time the national media was, as usual, in a frenzy about terror links and youngsters joining Da’esh to become suicide bombers.

But long after a trendy news report has died down, people often forget that there are sons and brothers involved, real people who have left real lives behind. And yes, cynics might rant on social media about the fact that it is their decision to go and nobody forced them, but I don’t think it is always that simple.

I had noticed that there had been minimal media coverage about the so called recruits, many of them children, being groomed over the internet. This is what I wanted to talk to the family about.

How their ‘lovely boy’ had suddenly left his normal life, fled his community, and got on a plane to the other side of the world.

Perhaps they would be able to tell me about any warning signs they noticed or have any advice for other parents?

As a mother myself, I know how vulnerable kids can be. They all want to fit in, want to be part of a gang, and impress their peers.

We will perhaps never know what is said to coerce people take such drastic action. But I know this; many of those who have ‘run away’ are impressionable, young, naïve young people, who may have led sheltered lives.

The lure of something so different, so exciting, makes it irresistible. I imagine it would feel like an adventure, like something from a film script.

But what they leave behind for their families, friends and the whole community, is unfathomable and simply devastating.

After speaking to teachers and youth workers, who are working hard trying to make a difference in the UK, it transpires that there are often no warning signs given.

Of course, why would there be?

An intelligent young man or woman is quite capable of going about their daily business without giving anything away.

The young man on the doorstep simply shook his head and said slowly: “What can we say?” I could see the devastation in his eyes. The weight of what had happened to the family was heavy.

I knew that his parents, probably hard working and proud people would not want to talk to me, a stranger, a journalist at that.

How could they put their suffering into words which may be twisted or misconstrued, like so many times before?

I tried to reassure the man that I was not one of those journalists who would ‘stitch them up’ and was looking at the story from a different angle. He just smiled and I knew our brief interaction was over.

I knew that his parents, probably hard working and proud people would not want to talk to me, a stranger, a journalist at that.

Who lives longest: meat eaters or vegetarians?

Our ability to live a long life is influenced by a combination of our genes and our environment. In studies that involve identical twins, scientists have estimated that no more than 30% of this influence comes from our genes, meaning that the largest group of factors that control how long a person lives is their environment.

and even cancer. There is some evidence to suggest that vegan diets possibly offer added protection above a standard vegetarian diet. These findings are far easier to interpret as they report the actual event of being diagnosed with a health problem rather than death from any cause.

So can we confidently say that avoiding meat will increase your lifespan? The simple answer is: not yet.

The problem with longevity The first thing that is clear is that, compared with most other creatures,

Some meta-analyses, which combine and re-analyse data from several studies, have also shown that a diet low in meat is associated with greater longevity and that the longer a person sticks to a meat-free diet, the greater the benefit. Not all studies agree, however. Some show very little

humans live for a very long time. This makes it very difficult to run studies that measure the effect of anything on longevity (you’d have difficulty finding a scientist willing to wait 90 years for a study to complete). Instead scientists either look back at existing health records or recruit volunteers for studies that use shorter time periods, measuring death rates and looking to see which group, on average, was mostly likely to die first. From this data, claims are made about the effect certain activities have on longevity, including avoiding meat.

There are problems with this approach. First, finding a link between two things – such as eating meat and an early death – doesn’t necessarily mean one thing caused the other. In other words: correlation does not equal causation. It may appear that vegetarianism and longevity are related but a different variable may explain the link. It could be that vegetarians exercise more, smoke less and drink less alcohol than their meat eating counterparts, for example.

Nutrition studies also rely on volunteers accurately and truthfully recording their food intake. But this can’t be taken for granted. Studies have shown that people tend to underreport calorie intake and overreport healthy food consumption.

Tooba Zafar is a woman on a mission The C.E.O of Global Staffing Solutions recently set up another business with a philanthropic twist to online food delivery.

Like its established rivals, Chef Genie (Chefgenie.co.uk) is an online food order and delivery service, which acts as an intermediary between independent takeaways and their customers.

But the big difference is that, for every order taken, a donation is made to charity to feed a needy child.

After helping over a hundred takeaways and restaurants’ every week to reduce their power and gas bills, it was only natural for Tooba to set up a portal in order to showcase business users how they could also increase their profits and also do something good in the name of charity.

“The idea was developed a few years ago but we have only recently brought it to life,” said Tooba.

“You can do so much for yourself as a business person or for your employees, but when it is about giving something back to those that are less fortunate, then it really is something special.”

business or any jobs that we have here, word has spread through word of mouth and people want to work with us.”

The concept was initially trialled from headquarters in London and now the company has opened up a new base in Leeds from which to launch its expansion into other regions.

The move has initially created six new jobs to administer the Leeds launch, with many more to follow as the northern branch develops. The company currently employs 30 staff in its London office with a remote team of 60 operatives promoting the service UK-wide. At the last count, there were around 5,000 outlets signed up, with between 200 and 300 new converts joining every week, said Tooba.

She said: “Our charges are lower than the bigger, established services, but the main difference and the winner, in our opinion, is that customers can feel happy that, when they eat, a poor child is eating too.

“Following the success of the London trials, we’re now ready to expand nationwide. As well as the fact that I’m from Leeds myself, the new Crown House Business Centre provides us with an ideal northern base.”

When asked where she expects Chef Genie to be in five years time, Tooba insists she has some very big plans for the business. “I expect Chef Genie to be in the window of every takeaway and restaurant out there.

“I would like to see the app on everyone’s phone as it is a great way to order food. You are not just enjoying a meal; you are safe in the knowledge, that another child is also getting a meal.”

Clearly Tooba has high ambitions for her business, so how does she balance four children, her flourishing business in London and now setting up base in Leeds with a brand new business?

"By Magic!" She responds.

"I have to be a bit of a magician, just like every mother out there who runs a business.

Everything is a priority, whether it’s a full-on audit from my suppliers or the kids’ Halloween disco. My kids have always been very much part of the business and people I do business with know it too. I remember my first child being only a few months old and happily asleep in a car seat under the desk while I was in an important meeting.

There are no hushed whispers around my sleeping kids. They were born with the sound of my business dealings in their ears.

My business life is built around the kids. If I have to do a London trip then I will get the early train and still be back to put them to bed.

At the end of the school day I’m at the gate with all the other parents and that is what my schedule is designed around – the school day.

You also have to be a night owl. I love the quiet time at night when the kids are in bed, the house is spotless and I can work for a couple of hours with complete focus. That’s probably my most productive time that I dedicate to the business."

I am hugely impressed with her response to her work life balance and so I ask her what would be her advice for other women wanting to set up in business.

"Go for it" She tells me "And don’t let anything stop you reaching your goals." She continues "So what, if one day you might be paying wages from the delivery suite at LGI, or your child is babbling away in the background while you’re doing your VAT returns.

"The biggest satisfaction you will ever get is knowing that you ran a successful business and did it all while having your babies – and that can be four of them if you want!

Anger after poster mocking Syrian refugees found in Parliament

A Labour party MP who came across a poster in Parliament, ridiculing the ages of child refugees entering the UK has provoked outrage.

The image, which shows an elderly man with the text “Just £3 from you could clothe and feed this 12yr old Syrian child for a week”, was placed above a sink in a communal kitchen.

“I’ve just come from a summit in Newcastle on safety and security with different communities and hate crime is increasing. Partly it’s the legitimisation of xenophobic discourse, making it legitimate to say things that you wouldn’t have done pre-Brexit,” said Onwurah.

“I share a corridor with a dozen other MPs and their staff but anyone with a full parliamentary pass has access there.”

Chi Onwurah, the Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central, tweeted a picture of the poster and branded it “xenophobic”.

She added: “Legitimising and supporting this kind of language makes life harder for vulnerable people and refugees.”

Ms Onwurah, the shadow minister for industrial strategy, said: “I think it demonises and dehumanises Syrian migrants - I think that is xenophobic.

The poster was found by her researcher Sarah Pine, who said the communal kitchen serves 17 MPs from Labour, the SNP and the Conservative party, as well as their staff.

“To demonise and reduce people fleeing Syria, when we’ve seen what they are going through, to a meme basically saying they are liars and

“I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again and I want to make it clear that it isn’t acceptable.”

Onwurah believes Parliament should be a safe working environment for everyone and that the poster should not have been displayed anywhere and ‘certainly not in parliament’.

Its discovery comes as the clearance of the Jungle camp in Calais began and a row continued over the apparent ages of child refugees.

Tory MP David Davies questioned the ages of refugees entering the UK as under 18s and said dental checks should be carried out to determine how old they are.

However, the British Dental Association was on hand to condemn the idea as unethical, inaccurate and inappropriate.

Furthermore, critics including the former footballer and Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker, hit out at the treatment of child refugees.

Lineker tweeted his outrage over the Sun newspaper’s coverage of refugees, labelling it as “hideously racist” whilst also calling ex-English Defence League leader, Tommy Robinson, a “racist idiot” whilst defending his right to express his opinions freely on his feed.

The Sun hit back, calling for Lineker to be ousted from his job as host of the BBC’s Match of the Day with the headline “Out on his ears”, of course, referring to the sporting hero’s most notable assets.

In the article, the tabloid branded Lineker a “leftie luvvie” and “jugeared”. The article attacked him for describing those querying the age of the young migrants as “hideously racist” and suggested he had breached BBC guidelines on impartiality.

Mr Lineker responded by tweeting: “Getting a bit of a spanking today, but things could be worse - imagine, just for a second, being a refugee having to flee from your home.”

All of which has prompted calls for a boycott of the Sun and an outpouring of support for Lineker on Twitter. His fellow ex footballer, Stan Collymore waded in, tweeting that he was on “Team Lineker”.

When contacted by the Asian Standard, a Commons Spokesperson said: “It is against House rules to display offensive materials on the Parliamentary Estate. This is inappropriate behaviour and the poster in question has since been removed.”

People belonging to BAME groups are more likely to be stopped and searched by Police according to the Home Office

People belonging to Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups are increasingly more likely to be stopped and searched by UK police forces, Home Office figures show.

The figures show people from an Asian background are 1.9 times more likely to be stopped and searched by police.

Tellingly however, Black people are six times more likely than whites to be stopped and searched by police although the figure fell by the least for any ethnic group, down by eight per cent compared to 2014-15.

However, those identifying as being black or black British were the most likely to be arrested at 22 per cent.

Although stops and searches have decreased across all ethnic groups, stops of white people have fallen by the most in the past year (by 38 per cent).

In the year ending March 31 2016, 386,474 stops and searches were conducted by police in England and Wales under section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. This was a fall of 28 per cent compared with the previous year and continues the downward trend in stops and searches after a deliberate scaling back of the controversial powers.

The figures were published after it was announced that standardised stop and search training will be implemented across England and Wales Sixteen per cent of stops and searches resulted in arrests in 2015/16, an improvement on the rate of 14 per cent in 2014/15 and the highest figure on record going back to 2001.

London’s Metropolitan Police were the force most likely to conduct a stop and search at a rate of 18 for every 1,000 residents in the capital.

Labour MP Yvette Cooper, chairwoman of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, said the figures raise “important questions” for the police and the Home Office.

She added: “When ministers launched a new scheme to improve stop and search in 2014, part of the intention was to tackle concerns about the disproportionate number of stop and searches on BAME men.

“But instead these figures show the ethnicity gap has got wider, even though the overall number stop and searches has gone down.”

Officers can stop and search people if they have “reasonable grounds” to suspect they are carrying items such

as drugs, weapons or stolen property.

The powers have attracted controversy and were the subject of an overhaul by Prime Minister Theresa May when she was home secretary.

Amber Rudd, the current Home Secretary, said the Government is clear that the power of stop and search, when used correctly, is vital in the fight against crime.

“While today’s statistics show that our stop and search reforms are working, with a continuing fall in the overall number of stops and the highest ever recorded arrest rate, it is completely unacceptable that you are six times more likely to be stopped and searched if you are black than if you are white.

“I am clear that in a Britain that works for everyone, no one should be stopped on the basis of their race or ethnicity.

“The Home Office will continue to push through reform to stop and search in collaboration with policing partners, but chief officers must provide the direction and focus needed locally to drive reform on the ground.”

Garth Stinson, the College’s stop and search lead, said the application of stop and search was about trying to get back to basics - just because you have got information about somebody, it doesn’t mean you should assume that you’re going to search them.

“What we want to do is give the officers confidence. If they’ve got reasonable grounds and they’ve got

the power that they can search people, they must do it.

“There’s a massive step between ‘I’ve got a gut instinct’ to ‘that gives me the evidence to get in their pockets’.

“Members of the public who are stopped should feel they’ve been treated with dignity and respect.”

Bradford open for Business as YENExpo is a resounding success

Hundreds of businesses flocked to Bradford Colleges newly built David Hockney building as the new revamped business conference YENExpo opened its doors for business.

All the 50 commercial stands for the major event were snapped up by local companies keen to capitalise on the previous successful event.

Formerly known as Bradford Business Conference, the event is in its fifth year and has been rebranded YEN EXPO 2016, reflecting the broader reach and Bradford’s re-established standing in the regional business arena.

Run by YEN (Yorkshire Enterprise Network) the conference attracted over a thousand delegates from across the country, as the event widened its scope to focus on creative businesses and careers, whilst retaining a focus on the city’s regeneration.

Key business figures who took part in question and answer sessions included Nasser Malik, chief executive of Malik House Business Centres, consumer credit specialist NMC Galaxy; Andy Welsh, Bradford College chief executive; Ian Ward, The Broadway general manager; Ben Fletcher, Boots Opticians managing director; Julian Jackson, Bradford Council’s assistant director of regeneration and Sandy Needham, chief executive, West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.

Imran Hafeez of the Bradford Literacy Hub said the event was an excellent way to appreciate the rich variety of the local business community, providing a rare opportunity for consumers and business people alike to discover new companies and to make valuable contacts.

“We know from previous events that a lot of business has been passed between both companies present and via delegates attending. In some cases, this has resulted in enduring and lucrative business relationships.

“There is always a great buzz at these Expos with so much going on. We’ve had very positive feedback from all those attending in the past and I think the fact that all the stands have been sold so quickly and pre-registration numbers are already very high shows the genuine interest that this year’s event created.”

YEN Director Sheraz Malik believes this year’s conference was one of the most exciting ever. As well as bringing back many of the most popular sessions from last year, Malik said the organisation introduced ‘a lot of new elements to ensure there is something for everyone’.

“It’s the most varied programme of events we’ve ever had, covering a fantastic range of subjects,” said Malik.

“It was really great to be able to bring such a strong programme of events to Bradford. We were delighted to see so many delegates making the most of all the sessions on offer, as well as enjoying the networking opportunities “We were also pleased to welcome delegates from across Yorkshire, giving us the opportunity to showcase what Bradford has to offer and let everyone know the city is well and truly open for business.

“There were some very important

issues raised in the various panel discussions and we were proud to hear from people at the event that YEN is now seen as one of the most proactive bodies in the Region at bringing organisations together for the mutual benefit of business success and the local economy.”

The event also featured key players from the sporting world, including Former Sports Minister and Bradford MP, Gerry Sutcliffe, former Liverpool Football Club and Premier League boss Rick Parry; Bradford City legend Wayne Jacobs, co-founder of the One In A Million children’s charity and Paul Porter, chief executive officer of England Boxing.

All of whom examined the impact of sport on the economy and regional employment prospects as well as topical and thorny issues surrounding the integrity of sport.

Gerry Sutcliffe, now director of Sutcliffe Swales Consultants and a Yorkshire Enterprise Network patron, said: “The opportunity to hear from some highly experienced people involved in the business of sport was a very lively session.

“Sport has a massive impact on our economy, providing scope for more investment and employment opportunities as well as the allimportant feel-good factor. It is vital, more than ever right now, to maintain the belief in sport.”

As well as top figures rubbing shoulders with members of the business fraternity, the event also raised £130,000 for charity.

Paneer Picatta Ingredients

Method

Serves 6 • 8 ounces paneer cheese • Salt to taste • Freshly ground black pepper to taste • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1/4 cup sherry or dry white wine • 1 small onion, minced • 1/4 cup drained capers • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced • 2 fresh green chilies, minced • Juice of 1 lemon • 2 tablespoons butter • ¼ cup fresh cilantro chopped

Season the paneer lightly with salt and black pepper.

Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and quickly sear the paneer cheese pieces until golden, about 30 seconds per side. Transfer to a serving dish, cover and keep warm.

Mint pilaf with potatoes and cumin

Ingredients

Serves 6 • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 small onion, thinly sliced • 1 small potato, peeled and cut into ½ - inch dices • 1 ½ tablespoons ginger, minced • 2 tablespoons mint leaves,

minced 1 fresh green chili, minced 1¼ cups basmati rice, soaked, rinsed and drained 2 ¼ cups water Salt to taste 3 teaspoons cumin seeds, toasted and crushed coarsely

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and sauté the onion until brown, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add the potato, ginger, half the mint, and the green chili and cook, stir¬ring, about 2 minutes.

Rishi wants 'inch pinch' on Ranbir After Ranbir Kapoor copied a scene from his father Rishi's "Chandni" in "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil", the veteran actor is now keen to do a "take off" on his son.

Responding to that, Rishi posted: "Well that's my son's take off on me in ADHM. Soon I shall do a take off on him. Inch pinch".

I'm supporting myself with my production banner, says Salman Superstar Salman Khan says he will support independent movies and filmmakers with his production banner if he likes the subject, but for now he is "supporting myself".

Sanjay Dutt's comeback film to go on floors in 2017 Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra says that he, along with writer Abhijaat Joshi, is working on the script of "Marco" -which will be actor Sanjay Dutt's comeback movie -- and that the project will go on the floors in the first half of next year.

At the closing ceremony of the 18th Jio MAMI Film Festival with Star , Chopra said: "We are writing the script of 'Marco'. We don't make a movie till our script is ready. We are very very hopeful that we will start shortly.

The moment the script is done, hopefully in March, April, we will start shooting."

Sanjay will be essaying the role of a Goan in "Marco", which will mark the directorial debut of Chopra's sister Shelly.

Chopra, who was present at the event along with Sanjay and Joshi, added: "Even Sanju knows this that we never make a film in a hurry. Therefore, the day our script is ready, within a week, we will be starting the shooting."

Aidan M: Entrepreneur,

Singer, songwriter - meet the oracle son of Yorkshire.

When it comes to private number plates, He is a graduate in architecture, but talented Yorkshireman, swapped his love for buildings to enjoy a career in singing. Yorkshire born Aidan Mufti, started his solo singing career in 2015 whilst supporting a Cancer Research Charity. His Bollywood cover songs were soon shared on YouTube and this is where his fan base started growing.

Over-night thousands of fans started following him on social media and this is when Huddersfield’ newest star Aidan M was born.

After completing his degree Aidan set up a publishing company where he launched the successful Oracle magazine – a free lifestyle magazine

covering theatest fashion and trends from across West Yorkshire. The success of The Oracle magazine was only a small part of Aidan’s ambitions, through charity work and performing at various events and concerts around the UK, Aidan’s fan base was growing. It was then that the Yorkshireman decided to release his first single ' Waada ' (Promise) The single released May this year in the UK charts and went on to reach over 200,000 views on Youtube within the first two months of its release.

This was huge for an artist who was selfmanaged with minimal marketing, in what is considered to be one of the toughest industries to break into. What followed was a series of successful media interviews, modelling contracts and

offers to act in Pakistani dramas.

Despite many lucrative offers, the talented singer chose to focus primarily on his music career and subsequently did a cover for John Legends ' All of me' which again was loved by everyone and showed the versatility of songs he could sing.

Although Aidan came late into the music industry he most certainly has been making up for lost time, with his second release ‘Ishq Tera’ (Your Love) already out and smashing his previous singles record.

The song once again was widely appreciated and has been playing on radio stations as well as TV channels. “I’ve always wanted to sing.” Aidan told Asian Standard.

“However, when I was younger I was occupied looking after my family and working, so to think I could make a career of music, never really entered my mind.

“I would always wake up and go to sleep singing. Everywhere I went, I always had a tune in my head and my friends were always telling me to do something with my voice.

“Now that I am in a position where I can have a go at it, I’ve decided to just go for it. It has been great fun so far and people have been really supportive of my music.”

Aidan promises to be back with more music, but for now he will be working on his next annual awards ceremony the Oracle Awards!

National Geographic’s Afghan Girl arrested on corruption charges

An Afghan woman whose photo was featured on the front cover of National Geographic magazine, to much acclaim in 1984, has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Sharbat Gula, first caught the world’s attention after National Geographic’s Steve McCurry took a photo of her at a refugee camp near Peshawar.

Gula has been arrested in Pakistan for holding fake identity papers, officials say.

Officials say she was arrested by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after a two-year probe in Peshawar, near the Afghan border.

Pakistan recently launched a crackdown against fake IDs. Mrs Gula allegedly applied for an identity card in April 2014, using the name Sharbat Bibi. If the fraud claims are true, she is one of thousands of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan who have tried to dodge its computerised system.

An official from the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) said the FIA was seeking three staff who had issued Mrs Gula’s ID. They have been missing since the alleged fraud was reported.

Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reports that ID cards were issued to Mrs Gula and two men who claimed to be her sons.

Gula could face a fine and up to 14 years in jail if convicted.

A Nadra source told the paper: “They may not be her sons, but this is a common practice among Afghan refugees whereby they list names of non-relatives as their children to obtain documents.”

Until McCurry found her again, Ms Gula had never seen the photo of herself as a child.

The image went on to become the most famous cover in the magazine’s history. Her name, initially know as Ms Gula - became known to the world as “Afghan girl”, or more poetically as ‘the Mona Lisa of the Afghan war’ when the country was occupied by the former Soviet Union, whilst the resistance movement was backed by western forces.

However, in 2002, 18 years after photographing her, he tracked her down to a remote village in eastern Afghanistan. Her eyes still very much the same, she was found to have been married to a baker and the mother of three children. Another child had died in infancy.

UN figures show that Pakistan hosts 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees. A further one million unregistered refugees are believed to be in the country.

She expressed hopes that her children would be able to get an education.

However, when asked if she had ever felt safe, she replied “No. But life under the Taliban was better. At least there was peace and order.”

SNP Transport minister: ‘I’m no transport expert’

Mr Yousaf made the admission while defending the SNP’s response to anger over late and overcrowded trains.

MSPs summoned the minister to talks after it emerged that the cost of improving Scotland’s rail network had risen to £379 million.

And despite insisting that the government was ‘monitoring closely every single project’ he admitted that he was ‘not an expert’.

He said: ‘There are things we can do to ensure we are monitoring closely every single project hence why we have established a projects board portfolio-wide.

“But we do rely on Network Rail as the contractor to ensure that when they give estimates that those

estimates at design stage and developmental stage are well detailed and the fact that years on they can come and say that compliance issues that I think – not being a transport expert – that I think they should have been cited on these issues well in advance at design stage.

UK Independence Party leadership candidate Raheem Kassam has pulled out of the race just three days after the official launch of his campaign.

The former aide to leader Nigel Farage said he was not "satisfied about the integrity of the process".

He added: "It is a decision I have not taken lightly, but following meetings this weekend I realised the path to victory is too narrow."

Mr Kassam urged his supporters to back Peter Whittle for party leader.

In a statement announcing his withdrawal, Mr Kassam said those at the top of UKIP were treating the contest "like a coronation", adding he was "not satisfied about the integrity of the process".

He accused some Members of the European Parliament of using party databases to "effectively campaign against me - ostensibly against the

Mr Kassam added that he had not raised enough money to run "more than a digital campaign from SW1" and said that not to "feature at events all around the country would have made me a hypocrite, given how much I criticise the establishment for ignoring the country".

UK economy grows 0.5% since Brexit vote

The UK economy grew by 0.5% in the three months after the Brexit vote, the Office of National Statistics has said.

Chancellor Philip Hammond, who is due to announce his first Budget next month, said the data showed the British economy's "resilience" to the challenges the country faces.

He said: "The fundamentals of the UK economy are strong, and today's data shows that the economy is resilient.

"We are moving into a period of negotiations with the EU and we are determined to get the very best deal for households and businesses.

"The economy will need to adjust to a new relationship with the EU, but we are well-placed to deal with the challenges and take advantage of opportunities ahead."

Meanwhile Sweden has warned that it would be a serious mistake to chastise Britain for voting to leave the EU, appealing instead for an amicable settlement to minimise damage for both sides.

We’re an open country and we are in favour of free trade, and we want to see a solution that is as beneficial

as possible for everybody,” said Magdalena Andersson, the Swedish finance minister.

Shimla Spice awarded best Indian restaurant in England title

It may have been ten years since its inception, but an Indian restaurant based in Shipley now has an even better reason to celebrate.

Shipley based Shimla Spice has been named as the best Indian establishment at the annual Food awards England competition.

The restaurant, headed by group manager, Faisal Hussain, won the title after scooping the Best in the North accolade at an awards ceremony in Manchester.

Commenting on the win, Mr Hussain was understandably delighted: “We feel fantastic. We opened Shipley in October 2006 - it will be ten years on October 31. It is like a triple

celebration because we have won so many awards in the last ten years.”

He added: “In our category there was the best in the North, the Midlands and in the South.

“We won the North one, which would have been enough for me. But then to go on and win the overall prize which I didn’t really think we would - is absolutely fantastic.

“For us to come out on top, words cannot really describe it. To win the double award is a massive achievement.

“For us as a restaurant, it is a big achievement, but to also be able to put Bradford on the map is fantastic.

It goes hand in hand.

“And for us, as a brand, it is amazing.”

Shimla, which also boasts a restaurant in Keighley, was initially nominated for the Best in the North accolade by a number of clients.

However, the Judging panel also picked the restaurant as a winner in that category and the national one.

Mr Hussain also spoke of Shimla’s expansion over the ten year period: “For a small 64-seater restaurant in Keighley to expand to a 200-seater in Shipley, we have done really well.

“Keighley is our flagship branch where all started. The Shipley one has taken the brand forward. It is bigger and has national recognition.

“We want to keep pushing Bradford in a positive way. It is great for us and Bradford. Someone from further afield who is a huge curry fan will want to come to Bradford to eat, and they will

make a weekend of it.”

Dhesi Grill which is based in Manningham was also nominated in the Best Indian Establishment in the North category.

In the Bakery of the Year category,

Shipley-based Just Desserts Yorkshire Ltd lost out to a firm from Walsall.

Shimla was also nominated in the Yorkshire Restaurant of the Year section, which was eventually won by a seafood restaurant in Halifax.

Are you a bright spark savings towards your future?

I have a very good friend who earns a decent living, but one of the issues she finds is saving cash. The main reason she has an issue with savings is put simply in her view she needs to live and saving is boring and something she will do after marriage/kids etc. This leads me to talk about my other friend who put simply just saves her cash, and has a tidy sum put away for a rainy day.

Anyhow, the issue is that both of my friends have their reasons, and equally both are in the right; however which one is doing better. The honest answer is both have different objectives, and both are doing what they feel is right for them; however I must side with my

second friend who likes saving. The reason why I say this is because a Money Advice Service (MAS) has found that over 16 million people in the UK have less than £100 of savings in the bank.

MAS has said that such a small level of savings is worrying, and challenging for low earners. This is because if all of a person’s income is being taken up by bills etc. then how can they save funds to be able to have a rainy day buffer.

So how much of a savings buffer do you need then? Different people/ organisations come up with different figures. An anti-debt charity recently said that if every household in the UK

saved £1,000 it would potentially reduce half a million-people falling into debt. I think savings should be dependent on the amount of outgoings a parent has. Let’s face it a £1,000 of savings will not last a family long; therefore, in my view a family should aim to try and save a minimum of 3 months of essential outgoings.

In terms of outgoings that are deemed essential in my view these are all your bills averaged monthly including the rent, as well as food costs and all further net essential expenditure. Now this might sound like a tall ask, but it can be achieved so long as a small amount of money is put away on a weekly or a monthly basis.

Going back to my two friends, my first friend I am actually treating as a client. This is because she asked me what changes she needs to make to start saving, and after undertaking a very simple budget planner she harealised she is spending too much on luxuries, such as designer clothes, bags, her mobile phone and going out in general. I have set her a target to save £100 a month, and have some savings in the bank.

I asked my second friend why she tries to save as much as she can? She responded that it was for a rainy day, to which I asked what she meant by this. She had no idea so we had a discussion about it. Overall I think she

done really well over the years, but perhaps now it is time to split her savings so that they are earmarked for certain goals such as: money available in an emergency, money invested for the short term, and money put away for the future.

Overall in my view I do think many of us need to look at our finances and decide how much we need to save, what we need to save for, and if we have sufficient rainy day funds what we can plan to do with the savings in line with our individual aims, objectives and goals.

Described in the Legal 500 as “exceptional” he primarily acts for individuals, owner managed businesses and SME’s in a wide range of sectors including financial, insurance, property and construction.

Fraud Unravels All When is the settlement of a claim between two parties not final? When there has been fraud involved. In what is being hailed as a landmark judgment for the insurance industry, the Supreme Court decided in the case of Hayward v Zurich Insurance Company Plc recently that where an insurer suspects fraud but nevertheless settled a claim, it would be entitled to set aside the settlement if it subsequently discovered that there had indeed been fraud involved.

In 1998 Mr Hayward suffered a back injury at work and pursued a claim against his employer for £420,000.

The claim was settled in 2003 for £134,973.11 after the employer’s insurers, Zurich, obtained video surveillance evidence showing that Mr Hayward had exaggerated his injuries. However, two years after the settlement, Mr Hayward’s neighbour provided evidence that Mr Hayward had actually made a full recovery from his injury at least one year before the settlement. Zurich therefore issued proceedings to set aside the settlement and to recover the sums which they had paid on the grounds of Mr Hayward’s fraudulent misrepresentation.

The Judge found that Mr Hayward had dishonestly exaggerated the

effects of his injury and ordered that the settlement be set aside and that 90% of the original settlement sum be repaid leaving Mr Hayward with the amount actually found to be due to him, £14,720.

However, the Court of Appeal overturned the County Court decision and held that, given that Zurich was aware of the fraud at the time of the settlement and had pleaded fraud in the original case, it could not now set aside the settlement agreement when proof of fraud was eventually obtained. The Court of Appeal stated that “parties who settle claims with their eyes wide open should not be entitled to revive them only because better evidence comes along later”.

The Court of Appeal found that Zurich had settled the claim with the risk that the claim may be fraudulent and it therefore had to live with the consequences of that bad bargain.

Zurich appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court unanimously allowed Zurich’s appeal, restoring the Judge’s decision. The Supreme Court was not prepared to allow Mr Hayward to profit from his fraud at the expense of the insurer stating that “it is difficult to envisage any circumstances in which mere suspicion that a claim was fraudulent would preclude

unravelling a settlement when fraud is subsequently established”.

Although this case relates to a personal injury claim, it is likely to apply to other types of settlements. It is not unknown for parties to settle cases even though they have doubts about the veracity of what they have been told by the other party. Agile, versatile, electrifying: The new MINI Countryman

The new MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model to be launched in the brand’s 57-year history.

With its larger external dimensions, and increases in space throughout the cabin and luggage area, it offers occupants even greater comfort and a genuinely premium ambience. Additions to the standard equipment list include MINI’s acclaimed Satellite Navigation System, Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Emergency E-call and Active Guard among others. National award for Bradford’s Onna Bike club

Local cycling club 'Onna Bike' which is geared towards helping the community to develop cycling skills has been awarded a national award as joint 'Best Community Project' by Cycling UK. Onna Bike, founded by Mumtaz Khan, runs weekly cycling sessions with fellow cycling coach Andrew Gray, at Zara Sports Centre, in Bradford on Saturdays 6.00 - 7.15pm followed by a ride for more confident riders.

"Cycling is becoming very popular in Bradford and for people just starting out or for those who enjoy cycling at a more leisurely pace - mainstream cycling clubs can seem quite daunting.

Onna Bike offers an alternative to the traditional lycra wearing cycling club which appeals to novice and intermediate riders" - Mumtaz Khan.

Mrs S Crabtree, a member of staff from Belle Vue Girls School, helped facilitate his presentation with a task involving the girls to develop their own expedition focusing on the countries that they would like to visit: Dubai, Jamaica, Japan and Australia were hot favourites.

Mrs Crabtree commented "All of our Year 10 girls have now completed the Level 1 Bike Ability Award and the majority the Level 2 Award. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and with the help of the professional instructors have developed better and safer cycling habits. Some of the girls had never ridden a bike before and many do not have the opportunity to cycle but the course has made them more comfortable and confident in the saddle.

Mumtaz Khan (far right) with the successful Bikeability project The club has won an award for facilitating a project at Belle Vue Girls Schools, Bradford which has resulted in 180 girls undertaking cycle training attaining Bikeability Levels 1 and 2. The project was made possible through funding from Cycling UK and collaborating with several organisations primarily Belle Vue Girls Academy, Zara Sports Centre and Bradford Council's Bikeability Scheme co-ordinated by Aubrey Cooper.

The project enabled 180 girls to participate in cycling activities ranging from Bikeability training, bike maintenance, Bike Nutrition making smoothies using a bike to power the motor and racing on Virtual Cycling Rollers provided by Otley Cycling Club. The girls also then take away a bike at the end of the course has been a great incentive and will hopefully encourage more girls to cycle to school or in their free time.

Cycling is a great way for the girls to get around, get some exercise, and reduce the amount of time spent stuck in a car, or on the bus and socialise with their friends."

Mrs Copeland (Head of Belle Vue Girls Academy) further added: "It has been

a great opportunity for one year to take part in this project. Not only learning a skill for now and the future but also exploring sustainability and environmental issues important to today's society".

Rachel Seymour from Cycling UK also appraised the scheme by saying “Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival initiative, in West Yorkshire alone, supported Onna Bike along with 22 other community cycle projects in delivering over 90 events this summer. We engaged with around 2500 people at local events between July and September. Onna Bike made a significant contribution towards these achievements in Bradford and I am very proud that they received the recent award, which is very well deserved. I look forward to continuing to work with Onna Bike on future cycling engagement initiatives. I am very pleased to see so many girls getting into cycling in Bradford, particularly since this is my home town! Cycling UK were funded by Department for Transport to deliver the Big Bike Revival and we were also very lucky to secure some additional funding from City Connect (part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority)

to extend the reach of the Big Bike Revival to a larger audience. We also extend our thanks to them too.

Without their help, we would not have managed to support all the great projects like Onna Bike that exist in West Yorkshire.

Part of the project enabled the girls to receive a free bike kindly donated by Adrian Woods MBE from OnTrak, a charitable organisation that redistributes reclaimed and donated bikes back into the community after being serviced by trainee students.

Special thanks also go to Feversham College for the loan of 10 bikes used during delivery of the project. The rise of kabaddi

You may or you may not be aware, the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, took place in Ahmedabad from the 7 to 22 October.

The spectacle saw India winning the world title for the third time in a row, however, a number of nations including Australia and the US put together teams less than a month before the tournament.

Granted, it was not a very competitive sight, but with top-class production and broadcast hours in Australia and on Sky Sports in the UK, even the English Premier League must have cast some very envious glances at the glitzy version of the village sport.

Why on earth would the Premier

League cast envious glances at Kabaadi? It is rather simple, the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), is modeled along the lines of the wildly popular Indian Premier League (IPL), the world’s most lucrative cricket circuit.

With the backing of celebrity owners and corporate honchos, every team must field at least three foreign players in an attempt to glaze the league with an international shine. During its inaugural season, 430m viewers tuned in to watch on television, second only to the IPL’s 552m.

How did kabaddi do it? In the frantic race for making sports other than cricket into vibrant businesses models with good TV viewership, how did kabaddi leave behind other,

more established sports like football and wrestling?

Kabaddi is a mish mash of freestyle wrestling and rugby that tests speed, agility and power. Two teams of seven players each take turns in dispatching an attacker, known as a “raider”, onto the defender’s patch.

To earn points, he must tag an opponent while mumbling “Kabaddi Kabaddi” in one long breath, and then hop back in his half. If the raider is wrestled and pinned down by any of the defenders, he is suspended from the game temporarily, until his team wins him back by tackling the opposition’s attacker. Needing only a patch of earth and no equipment, the sport has flourished to become a national phenomenon.

Zafar Ansari set to play as fourth spinner for England against Bangladesh

Former England captain, Michael Atherton believes England’s decision to choose to bring Zafar Ansari in to win his first cap will be very beneficial.

Atherton is of the opinion that Ansari will play as a fourth spinner in the final Test against Bangladesh.

It will be very, very tough if the seamers have to shoulder that burden and take the load from the spinners," said Atherton.

"We'll wait and see what happens in Dhaka. If it's another pitch like this, they might think about playing a fourth spinner just to give Ansari more of a game and see how you go with him because what do you lose moving forward?”

The final test should be one to remember. In the previous encounter, Bangladesh took England by surprise by what Captain, Alastair Cook said was the way they battled in the fourth innings run-chase.

Bangladesh were within touching distance of pulling off a win in the first Test in Chittagong but lost the match by 22 runs.

England set Bangladesh a target of 286 on a tough pitch for batsmen at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

The final day began with Bangladesh needing 33 with two wickets in hand but Ben Stokes broke the Bangladeshi resolve.

"I did genuinely think 280 was going to be enough, I didn't think it would get as close as that and the way they played spin in particular was very impressive," Alistair Cook said later.

Rick Parry: Football Clubs Need To Listen to Asians book, so I know all about it and the impact it made on the club.

Prior to being appointed as the chief executive at Liverpool Football Club in 1998, by then chairman David Moores, in February 1992 he was installed as the chief executive of the Premier League, overseeing the development of the league into one of the top professional football competitions in the world.

“The book made us realise that although we had a massive Asian fan base worldwide, we also had a significant fan base in the UK, from back when the club was winning silverware, so it was beneficial to both parties, the book was very successful and I was glad I commissioned it.”

When it comes to the Asian fan base however, Parry is far from a novice. After a meeting at Liverpool’s board room at Anfield in 2005, Parry commissioned my book: The Asian Liverbird, a look at the clubs international fan base, a book which was used by the club to “convince Standard Chartered Bank to come on board as a sponsor,” according to Simon Mould who looks after the relationship with the club for the bank.

“At Liverpool, we never ran the club like a business, it was never run like a business and it was a dream job, and as a fan, you could not ask for anything else.”
