Welcome
CARLY NAMIHIRA
Aloha and a warm welcome to the Professional Asian Pilots Association’s EXPO 2024! As we gather here in the vibrant city of Las Vegas, Nevada, the pulsating heart of PAPA, we extend our heartfelt greetings to our third annual Aerospace and Industry Conference and Career Expo.
Prepare to embark on an exhilarating journey through the dynamic world of aviation and aerospace, infused with the rich culture of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage. From enlightening educational sessions to captivating cultural performances and the tastes of our diverse cuisines, PAPA Expo 2024 promises an immersive experience like no other.
At the core of our organization lies the persistent dedication of our volunteers, the unsung heroes who breathe life into our vision. As a 100% volunteer-run organization, we understand the immense effort it takes to bring the ‘ohana (family) together for an event like EXPO. We are deeply grateful for their tireless work creating a unique aerospace experience that will leave a lasting impression.
As we join together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the aerospace industry, we reminisce on the humble beginnings of PAPA. Born from the immediate connection of regional pilots in 2017, united by shared experiences and a collective vision, PAPA was established as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in August 2018. Over the past five years, PAPA has blossomed from a humble text message group of nine individuals to a thriving ‘ohana of over 3,500 members.
With your invaluable support, we endeavor to break barriers and open doors to an industry that, for many, remains an elusive dream. At PAPA, we take pride in fostering a community that not only educates and empowers but also propels the aviation and aerospace fields to new heights.
To our cherished members, valued partners, and esteemed exhibitors, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering commitment to our shared mission. Together, we are shaping a future where diversity, equality, and inclusivity will soar across our skies. Thank you for your continuous efforts and support. We eagerly await the chance to connect and mutually inspire each other during this remarkable week!

LANCE LAU
Wednesday, June 5 at 9:00
PAVILION 11
Growing up in the sugar plantations of Hawaii during the 1950s through the mid-1970s, there was no exposure nor was there the thought that a career as a pilot was even possible.
The mindset was that a child essentially did what their parent did. In the back of Lance’s mind though there was always the love of flight. It was not until he met another Islander who had a pilot license that he actually believed that this was a possibility. After a considerable amount of soul searching he decided to stop looking for reasons why he could not do it and create a plan to succeed as a professional pilot.
Lance remembers going to his father with the news that he had decided to be a professional pilot. The response that he got was far from what he expected. His father’s reply was “are you nuts? Don’t you know that they don’t let us do stuff like that? His father’s next thought was more reassuring though, he told Lance“Son you never listen to me, and it is better to try and fail than to never try, so you might as well do it.” Lance’s response to this was, “Thank you dad, because I have already taken three lessons.” Lance will never forget how excited his father was when he received his Private Pilot license. He was the first person that Lance took flying after receiving his license.
Lance attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1979 and earned his Commercial, Instrument Multi engine, CFI and CFII within six months of starting there. After flight instructing for a while, he got his first job as a commuter airline pilot flying twin Cessnas in Honolulu Hawaii. Upon hearing that Lance was a professional airline pilot (of sorts) His dad called every one of his friends to tell them that his son is a pilot. It was not until his father’s later years that Lance fully understood his father’s mindset. It turns out that During World War two, Lance’s father graduated at the top of his class in officer candidate school. It was normal that the top graduates got their choice of assignment. hisfather chose to fly fighters and was turned down, he chose fly bombers next and was turned down. He was also turned down for navigator and bombardier. The reason was that the Army Air Corp did not want Asians in airplanes. He fulfilled his service in the aviation supply command. Now Lance fully understood the reason for his father’s response to hearing that Lance too, wanted to fly.
In 1984, Lance was hired as the first Asian pilot at the original Frontier Airlines. Airline line pilot training was often a very adversarial experience with instructors trying to “stump the chump” in a game of “You bet your Job.” Lance had made it his goal to know as much about the aircraft as possible and try to fly better every time. After the merger between Frontier and Continental Airlines, Lance started asking himself why this training mindset was so prevalent and if he could do better. After fourteen years of jumping through hoops trying to get into the training department, Lance finally wore the manager of training down and called his bluff. He was now out of excuses to why he could not hire Lance. As the first Asian simulator instructor at his airline, Lance found himself as an outsider in a good old boys club. Lance was not there to be a part of that club; he was there to make training better for all line pilots. The first several years in the training department were challenging, as the training manager would secretly stand outside the briefing room door to see if he could hear Lance say anything wrong during the brief. Lance also saw less experienced instructors rapidly rise through the department as he kept getting passed over for promotion. Eventually, Lance was offered the position as an Aircrew Program designee (APD) and became the first Asian APD at his airline. After the merger with United Airlines, the Boeing 777 fleet manager noticed the vast experience Lance had in long range navigation and international operations and invited Lance to join the 777 training department. To Lance, this was a breath of fresh air, as it was the first time that he was promoted based on his ability. Lance was welcomed into the Boeing 777 training department and eventually retired as a Boeing 777 APD. After approximately a year of retirement, Lance was offered to become the first Asian Director of Training at United Regional carrier CommuteAir, where he leads a team of highly talented professionals who provide high quality flight training to young pilots.
Lance Lau was an LCA on the Boeing 737 and APD on the Boeing 737 & 777. He has flown Boeing 707, 727, 737, 747, 777, DC-10, DC-3, and Falcon-50 aircraft. Q

PO HSIEN “JOHNNY” CHEN
Ever since I was born, my family lived right underneath the final approach path of Taipei Sungshan Intl. Airport (RCSS). Everyday at 6 am in the morning, there’ll be arrivals flying right over. As time goes on with me gaining consciousness, I grow to attract to the world of aviation. How a hunk of metal is capable of screaming across the skies at such speed. I knew from that time, my life wouldn’t be the same without aviation. Knowing it was near impossible to have the environment to success in Taiwan, I opted to came and pursue this career senior year of my high school. A host family relative was able to let me sit in a ground school of a Part 135 carrier out of Indiana and open my eyes to what the world of aviation could offer me.
I know it was going to be hard, but the persistent nature of Taiwanese got me through the tough winters of Michigan while juggling two university majors at the same time. Being part of PAPA allows me to join other Asian brothers and sisters to represent our culture through our airmanship and excellence, while maintaining high level of professionalism and passion. The extensive network of mentor and resources that PAPA offers allows me and other Asian pilots to work towards our dream one step at a time.
KENNETH CHEN
Being the son of a Chinese dad, raised in a Hispanic culture, inclusivity with diverse backgrounds has always been important to me. While at UND, I was searching for a group that embodied that at a student organization fair. That’s where PAPA came in. PAPA started a collegiate chapter at UND the last semester I was there prior to graduating and have been part of the organization ever since then!
I had to move to a country where basically everything was different to me at a young age. The language, culture, and way of life was all new to me. I had to finance my way through all my ratings and certificates without any help while also dealing with the emotional toll from losing a parent in a motorcycle accident. Everyone faces some sort of adversity. I believe that adversity can be turned into motivation to do the best you possibly can to reach your goals. Having a career in aviation can feel like a marathon trying to reach your goals, but stick with it! Don’t let up and your hard work will pay off!

SHEENA TEMPLO
Growing up in the Philippines, I would have never imagined, in my wildest dreams, that I’d be here today. My journey in aviation began when I became a flight attendant for a major U.S. airline. I entered the profession because I enjoyed traveling very much and I was great with people. Over time, I grew to learn so much about the aviation industry and I fell so in love with it that I decided to pursue becoming an airline pilot. I love that no one day is ever the same and I genuinely enjoy working with all the different crews. However, I also do enjoy cultivating relationships with my crews when we get the opportunity to fly together multiple different times. It has been eight years since I began my career as a flight attendant and six years since I took my first flight lesson. After six years of hard work, dedication, perseverance and discipline, I am proud to say I have now made it as an airline Captain! I am very much looking forward to this new role and growing not only as an individual and a pilot, but also, as a leader. I look forward to continue serving others and giving back to the community any way that I can!
THANH PHAM
The first spark that got me into aviation was my very first flight leaving Vietnam to immigrate to the U.S. at 12 years old. I still remember looking out at the wing as a curious kid, being extremely fascinated by how all this worked and whether this thing would actually fly. Aviation took a backseat as I spent the next couple of years learning English. Knowing that I wanted to do something with aviation after tinkering with Radio Control airplanes in high school, I found myself completely directionless and broke, so I ended up joining the military.
As fate would have it, I stumbled upon a glider club while stationed in Germany. While deciding whether I wanted to stick with the more financially secure job of being an IT specialist or pursue a career as a pilot, which didn’t pay as well, in the late 2010s, fate once again helped me stumble upon a Q&A session with the great comedian Bill Burr, where he gave advice about pursuing one’s dreams, even if they don’t pay well. As a Vietnamese-American, witnessing how hard my relatives worked to give us the best possible life, even when they didn’t speak fluent English, inspired me to work hard to become the best possible aviator. Being a member of PAPA allowed me to connect with other Asian aviators who better understand where I am coming from with my upbringing and background. PAPA also provides future Asian aviators with a place for guidance and inspiration, which is great because such an organization did not exist when I first started my journey in aviation. Q
