Welcome
HARLEY PASIDERIO
Welcome to Expo 2023! Professional Asian Pilots Association’s second annual flagship event. Welcome to Las Vegas as well, home of PAPA and a destination city for almost every airline in the United States.
We take great pride in presenting you with a completely volunteer-run event. PAPA’s expo team, directors and committee members have worked tirelessly to bring you this week’s activities. It is no small task to give you an event of this magnitude. It was also no small task to grow PAPA into the association you see today. What started as an idea shared between a small group of regional pilots has grown into a force of over two thousand members, mentoring hundreds of diverse aviators, offering hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year and assembling and connecting all the exhibitors you will see under one roof over the next two days.
I take great pride and feel honored that you have chosen to spend these days with us. My vision for PAPA has always included hosting some sort of job fair, but never an event of this magnitude. In fact the idea of PAPA or what it stands for would have never existed until I encountered the barriers that prevent many of us from getting a foot in the door at an airline. As you may have heard from me before, ever since I was a kid I had always known I wanted to be an airline pilot. But as a kid, I never would have imagined that a company’s culture and work environment would matter so much. The landscape of pilots within the industry is not what I had envisioned, and I sought to make it better. Your support of this year’s Expo reminds me that there is still a need for an association like ours, and it furthers my motivation to continue to grow PAPA. I hope as you leave our Expo that you feel motivated as well to carry out PAPA’s mission and its initiatives, and I hope to see you again at many future PAPA events.
As attendees of this year’s Expo, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a program filled with elements of Asian culture as well as speak with the exhibitors leading the way to help make our industry a place that welcomes all. Please take the time to speak with any PAPA directors, committee members and volunteers to learn more about our association and future plans.
I want to thank our sponsors for their support. With their lead in supporting diversity, equity and inclusion within the aviation industry we are able to bring you the program you will experience this year. PAPA has not been around for very long, but we hope to create a long, storied history. It is with the generous support from our sponsors that we may continue to do so.
We are honored you have chosen to be a part of our celebration and truly hope you enjoy Expo 2023! Q

Messages From Our Members: What Makes you Proud to be Asian American?
The strong work ethic that’s instilled in us from early childhood is what makes us a great asset to any company. In all things great and small, we give 110% and won’t quit until the job is done!
I would not be here if it weren’t for my mother’s sacrifices and hardship to come to America. I am first generation Asian American, and I am here to make my mother proud.
The ability to introduce Asian culture and food to my peers!
I am not Asian American myself, but my wife was born and raised in the Philippines. My son and daughter are half Filipino. My in-laws came to America to live with us five years ago as well. I’m proud of my predominantly Filipino family and the pride and culture that comes with the family heritage!
Asians have been part of America’s transportation infrastructure for centuries. Aviation, aeronautics and aerospace help to facilitate the exchange of cultures, foods, knowledge and languages around the world quicker, better, faster and most importantly safer for human kind.
I’m mostly proud of our culture, various form of arts and martial arts, different type of food, and the sense of community.
I am extremely proud to be part of a community that values hard work and dedication. The culture of excellence and respect that Asian Americans represent motivate me to do the best that I can in any endeavor.
I am proud to be an Asian American because I get to break the stereotypes of becoming a doctor, lawyer, or dentist. I am also proud to break the stereotypes of Asian Americans being bad pilots by showing what hard work and grit looks like.
I love being able to experience and embrace both of my cultures.
My grandparents left their homeland in China so their four daughters were able to pursue their dreams. I am proud product of their sacrifice in realizing my dream as a first-generation commercial pilot.
I’m proud to be Asian American because we belong to a culture rich with tradition, and as Americans we can still celebrate our Asian cultures and values.
I am proud of my Asian heritage, particularly the rich and diverse food culture that I have experienced, and as the first immigrant in my family, I take pride in breaking barriers and making my own mark in history.
My family leaving behind everything in Vietnam after the Vietnam War so my sister and I can pursue the American dream. I became an Air Force fighter pilot and now fly for Sun Country Airlines on the B-737. Thank you to my heritage for teaching me how to be persistent and tenacious in my pursuit of the American dream and aviation.
I am proud to carry the culture, traditions, and ethical values my ancestors sacrificed so much to keep alive.
My family immigrated across open seas with no RVAV and gave me the opportunity to become a pilot!

Knowing that my story is part of a more complex history and culture and that the work I do matters for younger generations who can learn that their differences are a strength that adds to their perspective and wisdom.

Keynote Speaker
ERNIE MEEKS
Ernie Meeks was born on November 8, 1974, at Beale Air Force Base, California. His father, a member of the US Air Force, instilled in him the value of hard work and sparked his interest in aviation by taking him to the flight line to see fighter jets. Meanwhile, his mother, who hailed from Thailand, brought him up with traditional Thai values of education and living a good life by helping others.
Ernie had a typical childhood filled with school and sports, and he was particularly interested in football. He continued to play football in college while also developing a passion for fitness, which he carries to this day through activities like jujitsu, weightlifting, and CrossFit.
Ernie started flying lessons at the age of 15 and earned his Commercial Multi-engine license and Certified Flight Instructor Certificate by the age of 18. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1997 and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. However, it wasn’t until 2000 that he attended Undergraduate Pilot Training.
Ernie graduated from Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training in 2001 as a Distinguished Graduate and then completed C-5 Galaxy training at Altus Air Force Base, where he graduated as a Distinguished Graduate again. In 2004, he transferred into the Arizona Air National Guard and finished his military career in 2018 as a KC-135 Command Pilot with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His final position in the Air National Guard was as the Director of Operations for the squadron.
In 2004, Ernie started flying for a Part 135 charter company where he piloted the Citation Ultra and Citation X. He was then hired by NetJets in 2006, where he flew the Beechcraft Hawker 850XP. In 2008, he was furloughed from NetJets during the economic downturn and took a full-time position in the Arizona Air National Guard as the commander of a contingency detachment.
Ernie was hired by Southwest Airlines in 2011 as a B737 first officer and returned to a parttime position in the Arizona Air National Guard as an Evaluator Pilot. He started his own aircraft management company, MJets, in 2020, where they manage private jets for owners. In 2022, Ernie purchased a Part 135 company and integrated it into MJets. That same year, he upgraded to Captain on the B737 for Southwest Airlines. Q

HOW TO CONQUER THE SCENARIO-BASED INTERVIEW WITH ASCENDABOVE
Friday, May 19 at 9:00
PAVILION 9
Hiring Managers and Recruiters are seeking various skillsets and want to know more about how you act in certain situations. They assess these skillsets by asking you, among other questions in the interview, situational questions commonly known as “What Would You Do.” Situational-Based Interview questions require you to describe how you would respond to a hypothetical situation in the future using the skillsets you have today. Interviewers use these questions to predict and assess your future job performance – sometimes called Targeted Selection. Every aviation employer wants to ensure that they hire potential candidates who are able to manage the responsibilities of their position. In this presentation, AscendAbove will teach you a step-by-step process on how to conquer the most rigorous interview questions.

RICK KIM
Born in Chicago, I am a first generation Korean American. My parents are Korean immigrants that survived both Japanese and North Korean tyranny and oppression. Growing up Asian in the Chicago area during the 70’s and 80’s was difficult to say the least. From an early age, I always had dreams of being an airline pilot. Asian stereotypes and a lack of guidance/ information made it seem impossible. Not to mention I had never heard of nor seen an Asian Pilot. Destined to be an accountant or engineer, I managed to find colleges that offered flight training. Sounds simple, but without the internet and proper guidance it could be easily missed.
I ended up learning to fly and going to A&P school at the University of Illinois. During school, I worked as a mechanic and flight instructor at the local FBO. After graduating, I flew 135 Charter at the FBO before getting my first airline job. My first airline was UFS Inc. d/b/a United Express flying the BAeATP. I was both a check airman and Union Representative. After four years on property, UFS ceased operations. I ended up at Air Wisconsin flying the DO-328 and eventually found myself at Southwest Airlines in January 2001. I upgraded to Captain in May of 2007. In my time at Southwest, I had always felt that Asians were not represented. I worked to help change this and am proud of my efforts. In addition to this, I am a member of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association - Strike Preparedness Committee. I am proud to serve our pilots. The work I do for SWAPA is by far the most fun and fulfilling work I have done at Southwest Airlines.
HARLEY PASIDERIO
Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Harley knew he wanted to be an airline pilot ever since he was eight years old. He began
his journey by taking his first flight lesson at age 14. Eventually he would earn a Gold Seal on his CFI certificate and fly for other airlines before landing a career at Southwest Airlines.
Harley was fortunate enough to attend a high school which had an aeronautics program that offered flight lessons as well as ground school. He served his Country as a Nuclear Reactor Operator and Nuclear Power Instructor for the Navy. Harley served onboard the USS John C. Stennis as the No. 2 Propulsion Plant Reactor Operator and as a Sea-Returnee Staff Instructor at Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, NY. After the Navy, Harley continued chasing his dream to become an airline pilot. He would eventually meet several like-minded Asian professional pilots, and together they formed the Professional Asian Pilots Association (PAPA). Being Filipino-American, Harley had to overcome some barriers while pursuing a career in flying and while working as a pilot. PAPA is dedicated to inspiring individuals to look past the barriers and encourage the pursuit of a career that they might not otherwise consider. As a kid with dreams to work as an airline pilot, Harley did not realize how company culture or work environment would matter so much, and PAPA is helping to improve that culture while helping others in their journey to becoming a professional in the aviation industry.
TARA TRAYNOR
Tara Traynor is a Captain and Line Check Pilot on the 757/767 for United Airlines. She has been on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Women Airline Pilots since 2015 and has been in her current role as President since 2019. Tara got her start flying as a Naval Aviator flying jets on two aircraft carrier deployments and served as the first female Advanced Strike instructor who had been deployed on an aircraft carrier. After leaving active duty in 2001, Tara spent a short time at American Airlines before being furloughed. She flew C-9s in the Navy Reserves until her retirement in 2011. In 2005, she was hired by Continental Airlines where she served in several ALPA positions, including representing the Newark based Continental First Officers from 2008-2013, leaving office at the conclusion of merging the Continental and United Airlines Pilot groups. TANYA CHEN
Flying has always been my greatest passion and blessing in life. I have been very fortunate to experience two careers, in aviation and accounting. After obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Physics and Math, and master’s degree in Accounting, I worked at United as a multilingual flight attendant and Deloitte, PwC, and Fidelity Investments as a Tax Accountant. My flight attendant experience opened my eyes to the world of aviation and it became clear to me that flying is truly my calling – I am happiest in the sky, with an invigorating sense of freedom. Initially, I wasn’t sure whether my dream to transition to the flight deck would be possible.
I joined PAPA because I wanted to connect with others within the AAPI community striving to be the best professional pilots and lead a purpose driven life with strong values. I found that through PAPA, and so much more. I have met and am continually inspired by so many PAPA members and pilots who are leaders and trailblazers. I am incredibly thankful to PAPA for providing mentorship, community and the scholarship that will make my aviation journey possible. It is a great honor and privilege to be a part of PAPA. As I have been supported by PAPA and inspired and encouraged by those before me, I hope one day I can pay it forward, to support and uplift anyone who feels the call to fly.
KENNY HAN
To me, PAPA represents a community that has embraced me from day one of my journey into aviation. As I get started with my training, PAPA’s belief in me motivates and inspires me to be even more focused in reaching my goals. I feel a great sense of pride due to my inclusion into this great group of pilots, and I do my best every day to make my community proud.
PAPA’s generous scholarship has allowed me to focus on my future as a pilot with confidence and clarity. It is with the utmost gratitude that I will continue down this path, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of colleagues to share this path with.

STACY UEBELHOR
Seventeen-year Alaska Airlines Flight Attendant Stacy Uebelhor did not realize she wanted to be a pilot until Valentine’s Day 2020, when she met another flight attendant pursuing the career change. Two days later, Stacy took a discovery flight and is currently working on CFI at Pavco Flight Center in Tacoma, Washington.
As a first generation pilot, wife, mom, flight attendant, and local Seattle Ninety-Nines Chapter Chair, Stacy understands the busy schedule and the financial aspect of flight training that all pilots go through. She took any advice from any pilot that would give it, all the while enjoying the camaraderie and taking an active part in the organizations promoting the advancement of historically marginalized people into the aviation industry.
Learning about PAPA and wanting to boost the power of minority females in the industry, Stacy was excited to feel at home when she went to a local PAPA social. Through scholarships (including one from PAPA during Commercial ASEL training) and sacrificing family vacations and activities, Stacy avoided taking out loans thus far. Advice that she once was given keeps her going and she shares the same with others on the journey: “Don’t give up and stay the course. It can sometimes seem like a daunting journey from Student Pilot to ATP, but just know the hard work will all be worth it.”

CHLOE MURILLO
I was inspired to become a pilot when I watched a TV drama that revolved around the life of the commercial aviation industry. One thing that stood out to me was that I didn’t see many Asian pilots depicted in real life. Even the Asian airlines ironically had very few Asian aviators. As a result, I decided to pursue a goal that would challenge that stereotype and set out to become a commercial pilot.
I happened to get a job with a legacy airline as a flight attendant. The more I got to interact with real pilots, the more I wanted to become a pilot. So I started doing research and went for a discovery flight with a flight school in New Jersey. I LOVE IT! And that was how I started my flight training journey.
As a mom of two little children and with a full time job this undertaking was not easy. Luckily my family was very supportive. I was able to go for my flight training while I had days off from my regular flight attendant job. I joined aviation organizations like PAPA where I met amazing mentors who showed me the strategy to go from zero flight experience to becoming a commercial airline pilot. My transition from being a flight attendant and a mother to becoming a pilot was not easy, but it was definitely worth it. I am very proud to be a good role model for my children and representing in the aviation community as an Asian pilot. Go for your dream! I wish many more of you to join us!

As a proud Filipino American Pilot, I am inspired and proud of my Asian heritage. The values ingrained in Filipino culture, such as strong family values, hospitality, and resilience, have played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today. Growing up, I was taught the importance of hard work and perseverance, qualities that are essential for a successful military career.
I am also honored to be a part of the long-standing tradition of Asian Americans serving in the US military. From the Japanese American soldiers who fought in World War II to the thousands of Asian American soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have a history of military service and sacrifice. As a Pilot and instrument examiner, I am proud to be part of this elite group of individuals who have the skills and expertise to fly and maintain some of the most advanced aircraft in the world. My role in the military allows me to make a significant contribution to my country, and my accomplishments are a source of pride for both me and my family.
Overall, my cultural background, participation in the long-standing tradition of military service, and my role as a Pilot and instrument examiner in the US Army make me proud to be Asian and proud to serve my country. I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the rich tapestry of diversity and inclusivity in the aviation industry, and I look forward to a bright future in my upcoming career transition to the airlines. Ever since I was 12, I have been a huge fan of Elvis. I love singing and imitating his moves. “Blue Suede Shoes” was the first song I learned on my guitar. So far, I have played and sang songs of Elvis for friends and relatives. Since 2018 I have also been performing as the “Asian Elvis” at birthday parties, weddings, conferences and other celebrations, using high quality backing tracks or alongside a live band.
