F RO M T H E P RES I D E N T Welcome to the very first Professional Asian Pilots Association Expo! Welcome to Las Vegas as well, home of PAPA and a destination city for almost every airline in the United States.

We take great pride in presenting you with what may be the first of many flagship events. The Directors at PAPA and its committee members have worked tirelessly to bring you Expo 2022. It is no small task to give you an event of this magnitude. It was also no small task to grow PAPA into the association you see today. What started as an idea shared between a small group of regional pilots has grown into a force of over one thousand members, mentoring hundreds of diverse aviators, offering hundreds of thousands of scholarship dollars each year and enabling us to assemble and connect all the airlines you will see today under one roof.

I take great pride and feel honored that you have chosen to spend today with us.

My vision for PAPA has always included hosting some sort of job fair but never an event of this magnitude. In fact, the idea of PAPA, or what it stands for, would have never existed had I not encountered the barriers that prevent many of us from getting a foot in the door at an airline. Ever since I was a kid, I had always known I wanted to be an airline pilot. But as a kid, I never would have imagined how important the company culture or work environment would be. The landscape of pilots within the industry is not what I had envisioned, and I sought to make it better. Your support of today’s Expo shows how many others also recognize the need for this change, and it furthers my motivation to continue to grow PAPA. I hope as you leave today you feel motivated as well to carry out PAPA’s mission and its initiatives, and I hope to see you again at many future PAPA events.

As attendees of today’s Expo, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a program filled with elements of Asian culture as well as speak with the recruiters leading the way to help diversify the airline industry. Professional Asian Pilots Association (PAPA) is an entirely volunteer-run organization dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry. Our goal is to bring awareness and support to members of the Asian community in the industry through networking opportunities, scholarships and mentorship. We hope to inspire current and prospective professionals towards a fulfilling career in aviation.

It’s equal parts our introduction to the greater aviation community, as it is an invitation into our home – a celebration of values, tradition, joy and excellence. I have been given the opportunity since joining PAPA to be a voice for change. When I first met the organization back in 2019, we were young and raw – filled with the potential many of us have as we grow. The last few years gave the world a chance to reflect upon and rekindle the passions we have in life. Since our PAPA rebirth in 2021, we’ve refocused our efforts on execution of ideas, increasing the reach of our voice and developing a true character as an organization. I’ve been blessed to be given real agency in this mission, and I hope that this message is delivered clearly through our event.

While you join us as an honored guest to our celebration, I hope you find time to pull yourself away from the interviews and resume hand-offs to visit our festival area. Here you’ll find a rich tapestry of fun activities, people and organizations eager to share their perspectives and stories from around the world. KEYN OT E S P E AKE R : D AV E RET N AM Captain Dave Retnam is the Senior Manager of Flight Operations at Southwest Airlines. From the DFW Metroplex in Texas, Retnam dreamed of flying from an early age and was obsessed with airplanes, astronomy and space. The first in his family to take up flying in 1992, he finished his ratings and then flight instructed while studying Aviation Science at Mountain View College, Dallas followed by Business Administration at Dallas Baptist University. Retnam worked as a flight instructor, Chief Instructor, Charter/Corporate Pilot and Lead Training Captain for various Charter and Aircraft Management companies before starting with Southwest Airlines in 2001. Retnam upgraded to Captain at Southwest Airlines in 2008 and in 2014 was promoted to Chief Pilot. He led the Chief Pilot Team in Network Operations Control from January 2015 and became the Senior Manager of Flight Operations in May of 2016. Currently, Retnam oversees Pilot Hiring, Mentorship and Leadership Development, Crew Accommodations, Security Programs, Military Affairs, Crew Assistance Programs and the Destination 225 Pilot Pathways Program.

Retnam is of Indian, Polynesian and Caucasian descent and resides in Mansfield, TX. He has been married for 24 years and has two college-age children.

I’m from Hilo, Hawaii and currently a student at United Aviate Academy. In three months, I was able to get my Private Pilots License and hit 100 hours. I’m currently working on my Instrument Rating. Being a PAPA member has significantly impacted me and my success at the United Aviate Academy. As a scholarship recipient, PAPA has helped me alleviate a huge financial barrier of attending flight school so that I can focus on studying and flying! My PAPA mentor Emily has been a huge support system while I navigate the aviation industry. PAPA has helped turn my dreams into reality, and I’m so honored to be a part of this organization!

KRIST I AN O LART E

My name is Kristian Olarte, and I am a first officer on the 757 for FedEx Express. I was born in the Philippines and emigrated as a young boy to the Bay Area where I grew up. I knew nothing about the aviation industry when I started flying back in the mid 2000s. There was no PAPA at the time, and I did not know anyone in the airline industry. FedEx was always the goal. I had no idea how I was going to achieve that goal, so I took a ‘go with the flow’ approach taking every good opportunity I could get to eventually be competitive for a possible job offer in the future.

With a little luck, I received an interview invitation for May 2021. I was going in blind until a PAPA member reached out to offer some help and guidance about the company and the selection process. The community here at PAPA was definitely instrumental in achieving my ultimate goal.

I wish I had peers in the industry to guide me through these important milestones earlier in my career. It’s wonderful to have people I can turn to when a path is not so clear. That same PAPA member that helped me through the FedEx process also convinced me to bid for the foreign duty assignment. I am very glad he did. We are now neighbors here at our Cologne, Germany base and living out another bucket list item of exploring Europe to the fullest.

I am very honored to represent PAPA at United Aviate Academy as a 2021 scholarship recipient.

This scholarship has given me the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming an airline pilot.

I have felt unconditional support from the board of directors, my mentor, and my PAPA peers here at the academy. I am excited to continue the PAPA mission of raising awareness about the aviation industry and support for members of the Asian community in the same way I have experienced.

I am grateful to be a member and mentor for Professional Asian Pilots Association. I wish this would’ve been around when I was a young student starting my training, and that’s why I take my role as a Mentor very seriously! I know how important representation matters and I want to help grow PAPA as much as I can. I helped plan the Cultural Events and Festival Area for The 2022 Aerospace Expo, and it has been really fun being part of the whole process! I’m not only a female Asian airline pilot, but I’m married to another pilot, a lucky mom to two daughters, and proud representative of PAPA! E N RI CO SAN TAM ARI A

I joined PAPA shortly after retiring from United Airlines as a 787 Captain. Being a PAPA member has enabled me to keep in touch with the industry, in particular the current state of airline pilot career progression. I’ve had the chance to meet the members socially and to assist pilots who flew in Asia and who are working to reestablish their careers in the US.

US Air Force, 89th Airlift Wing , C-32A Special Air Missions Pilot Since joining PAPA, I’ve been able to connect with other like-minded Asian American aviators who want to achieve their professional goals in one of the most dynamic job industries today. As an Air Force pilot, I have been able to connect with other Asian Americans who were interested in joining the military and potentially apply for a pilot slot in the Air Force.

I’ve also learned about potential job opportunities on the civilian side for when I eventually separate or retire from the Air Force. Overall, PAPA has been a fantastic medium to connect Asian American aviators of various backgrounds and experience levels – from those with no flight hours, to those who have been involved in the aviation industry for 30+ years.

M AJ O R AN D RE W N A

US Air Force, 89th Airlift Wing, C-40B Special Air Missions Pilot The PAPA community has offered incredible opportunity for myself as an Asian American Air Force pilot to connect and learn from other professional AAPI aviators. Throughout my life, I had not met one AAPI pilot until well into my Air Force career, and, while I did not notice it at the time, I realize that subtly created a barrier to entry into the aviation world. PAPA gave me the ability to reach out to other AAPI members who are interested in aviation and provide them my story on how I ended up becoming an Air Force pilot. The community is an excellent organization to mentor, learn and reciprocate with our underrepresented community in the world of aviation. I have learned so much through PAPA and its highly diversified members on the many paths to aviation and feel confident I will have a strong support network when transitioning out of the Air Force into the civilian/commercial aviation community.

8:45 - The BLOQ Las Vegas Kaminari Taiko was formed in 1993 by George Goto (chief drum maker) and Doug Muraoka (director) under the name “Las Vegas Taiko”. Shortly after forming, families of the local Japanese club and Buddhist Sangha Group joined. After practicing on tires, learning from other small groups around the Southwest US, and building their own drums, LV Taiko became LV Kaminari Taiko because of the impressive thunderous sounds the new drums made. 13:00 in the Evolution Room J O LAN D A W I TV L I ET Captain Jolanda Witvliet holds an ATP with type ratings in the Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777, and 787. She flies for a major airline and has served extensively in various capacities involved in pilot training programs including serving as a manager of instructor training, simulator instructor and line check airman. She has also served broadly as a volunteer for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), as a representative and advancing issues in membership, including member access and participation, diversity and inclusion issues, parental issues and new hire mentoring.

RI C H ARD SW I N D E L L Captain Richard Swindell left active duty military service and transitioned to the airline industry where he flies and works as a line check airman for a major airline. He holds CFI, CFII and MEI certificates along with an ATP with type ratings in the Canadair CL-65, Boeing 737, 757, 767 and Airbus 320. On his days off from flying, Dr. Swindell has spent many years teaching in the Department of Aviation Technology at Indiana State University as well as the College of Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Worldwide. He currently runs an aviation safety consulting company and guest lectures in areas such as leadership in volunteer organizations, the labor-management relationship, safety management systems in aviation and the air transportation industry.

AN D RE W ROSS Andrew Ross is a pilot at a major airline flying the Boeing 757 and 767 domestically and internationally.

Andrew has served as an Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representative, committee chairman and a member of the ALPA National Education Steering Committee. Andrew has also worked as a line check airman and holds a Gold-Seal flight instructor certificate. Andrew holds a master’s degree in organizational leadership and was recently appointed to serve on the US Department of Transportation’s Youth Access to American Jobs in Aviation Task Force (YIATF). As a Board-Certified Coach (BCC) with certifications from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Andrew also owns a consulting company that provides executive leadership coaching along with services to the airlines and other training providers.
