Filipina receives Ramon Magsaysay Award for...

PAGE A1 Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa, 71, was among five recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize, for documenting and teaching a pre-Islamic dance tradition called pangalay.

Amilbangsa told the Associated Press she hopes the ethnic dance will continue to live on and help heal divisions in the poor in the Philippines, rather than become a decorative museum piece. “We have to think of a national symbol that can unite all of us,� she said in a recent interview.

Amilbangsa developed a fascination for pangalay when she first saw the dance at a 1969 wedding in Sulu province, where she relocated after marrying a Muslim schoolmate who belonged to a prominent clan, the Associated Press reported. “I thought that this was so beautiful, it’s so different,� she told the news agency.

In the ethnic dance, arms are swayed gently and the hands and fingers move in a way that simulates the motions of animals or waves.

Amilbangsa was interested in how pangalay is believed to have come to the southern Philippines from India prior to the arrival of Christianity and Islam, according to the Associated Press. The news agency added that the Fili-

pina awardee said classic dance forms resembling pangalay can be found in Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand, among other places in Southeast Asia.

In the same year that Amilbangsa became interested in pangalay, she began conducting research on the dance and interviewed elder villagers to record the gestures, Pangalay dancer and researcher Nanette Matilac told the Associated Press.

In 1983, Amilbangsa published a book with the first written pangalay dance instructions, the news agency reported.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, whose late mother (former Philippine President Corazon Aquino) previously received the honor, gave out the awards on National Heroes Day and offered positive words for Amilbangsa. “Our country holds the belief that if you forget your roots, you are bound not to reach your destination. Our own kababayan, Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa, has lived by this code. She turned her appreciation of the arts into an advocacy, with the most important one being the study, practice, and teaching of the dance style, pangalay, from the southernmost part of the country,� Aquino said during a speech on National Heroes’ Day, according to CNN. The four others who also received the award are: Kommaly

Chanthavong of Laos for reviving and developing ancient Laotian silk weaving as a means of creating a source of livelihood for poor villagers; Anshu Gupta of India for founding a volunteer group that recycles a variety of items, providing jobs and more affordable basic items for those in need; Sanjiv Chaturvedi of India for investigating and exposing government corruption; and Kyaw Thu of Myanmar for providing free funeral services for the poor through a group he created called Free Funeral Services Society.

Aquino said the each recipient “has transcended the ‘individual perspective.’� “Each of them has chosen to leave their comfort zones, and answer the call to serve more and more people, whether the immediate community, or all of society,� he said, according to CNN. The Ramon Magsaysay Award, created in 1957 and named after the third president of the Philippines, is bestowed on individuals and organizations each year.

Since it was established, more than 300 men, women and organizations have been recognized for their selfless service for their societies, Asia and the world, according to the award foundation’s website.

Each awardee received $30,000 and a gold medallion.

In any confrontation, Filipinos should remember that while China had a warship, the Philippines “has worship,� Lewis said.

Last month, China’s market fell 40 percent and lost trillions of dollars in value,� she added.

Radio broadcaster Cosme Maestrado, 46, the most recent victim, was shot to death by four unidentified gunman, according to The Guardian. On Aug. 19, Teodoro Escanilla, a radio anchor for dzMS, was shot in front of his house; on Aug. 18, newspaper columnist and publisher Gregorio Ybanez was shot dead in front of his home, the Associated Press reported. “We call on President Benigno Aquino to give top priority to swiftly resolving these egregious cases,� said Shawn Crispin, the senior southeast Asia representative of the Committee to Protect Journalists, according to the Associated Press. “Until Aquino demonstrates his government is serious about ending the onslaught, the killings will inevitably continue.�

Maestrado, an anchor at radio station dxOC, escaped a previous attack in November 2011, his colleagues told The Guardian.

He was known for his commentary on the abuse of power and

local corruption. The publication reported that Maestrado was shot 10 times. “He was a good man, kindhearted and helped many people.

His cry is for change,� radio station manager Remegio Bonustro said, according to The Associated Press.

Escanilla, according to the news agency, was a spokesman of human rights group Karapatan in the province of Sorsogon and was critical of alleged military abuses.

In 2015 alone, six journalists have been killed in the Philippines, and 32 since Aquino assumed the presidency in 2010, according to a Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism report.

If the three most recent incidents are determined to have

been work-related murders, the number of journalists killed in the Philippines since 1986 will be at 150, according to Philippine media watchdog Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility. “The murder of three journalists in two weeks shows how the lack of progress in ending impunity has emboldened those bent on silencing the press in the Philippines,� Crispin said, according to The Guardian.

Presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma has criticized the attacks and told reporters that police have been instructed to search for the killers.

The Philippine National Police Director General Ricardo Marquez, according to the Associated Press, said police have created separate special investigation groups to look into each of the attacks.

The Philippines is ranked the third most deadly country for journalists around the world by the Committee to Protect Journalists, following Iraq and Syria.

“Overnight my family became undocumented,�

Ballesteros shared. “I never really knew how to deal with it until I opened up to my teacher during the junior year of high school.�

He kept his undocumented status a secret at first, but eventually confided in his English teacher, Ms. Solberg, who helped him research colleges that could offer merit scholarships for undocumented students. Ballesteros went on to Drew University, a liberal arts college in New Jersey that granted him a scholarship.

During his junior year in college, his mom encouraged him to apply for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that President Obama announced in 2012, and he was approved to live and work in the US legally.

Since it was introduced, more than 660,000 people have received DACA, according to the White House. “Applying to DACA is very personal. A lot of immigrants may be scared of coming out of the shad- ows because of the repercus- sions that may come with it.

But personally, I feel that DACA has changed the way that I engage every day — I can drive, I can work, I can do all these amazing things I wouldn’t have

been able to do without a social security number or a driver’s license...it has impacted me on a positive way,� Ballesteros said. “I definitely recommend that if you are eligible for DACA to pursue it because I don’t think there are negative repercussions from applying and trying.�

Becoming a DACAmented teacher Ballesteros, who graduated from Drew University in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in art history and a minor in chemistry, originally intended to go to medical school. But the reality of his status made him recognize that he wouldn’t be able to live out that plan.

With Ms. Holberg and how she impacted his educational career in the back of his mind, he decided to delve into teaching. â€œâ€ŚI changed my path in my senior year when I thought back to Ms. Holberg and what she did for me. I joined Teach for America soon after graduating from college,â€? Ballesteros said.

Sharing how he “wanted to be civically engaged but didn’t know how to do that while being undocumented,� Ballesteros came across Teach for America (TFA) again in college when a friend applied, and saw that the program was accepting corp members who are DACA recipients.

TFA first accepted two “DACAmented� teachers into the program in 2013, and 44 teachers were placed in 10 regions across the country the following year.

To date, over 90 DACAmented teachers are working in 13 regions, according to the organization’s website. Among the areas where the organization has partnerships with schools to hire these teachers are the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City. “TFA-Los Angeles has the largest number of DACAmented corp members in the country across our 52 regions and mainly because when we heard about the opportunity to have DACAmented corp members, we were able to call Los Angeles Unified School District and our big charter partners and say ‘will you hire our teachers? will you support this initiative?’ and all of them across Los Angeles said

For DACA recipients to be considered for TFA, they must have at least a 2.50 undergraduate GPA, a bachelor’s degree, a social security number and an Employment Authorization Document to meet the hiring requirements of partner schools. TFA also helps corp members with legal assistance if needed.

Ballesteros is now entering his second year as a high school chemistry teacher for Animo College Preparatory Academy, a public charter school in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Since it’s an inner-city school, Ballesteros said he tries to be positive and engaging in the classroom, noting that some of students may not come from “healthy backgrounds.â€? “Throughout my first year, I found out that the key to me being able to make a great impact in the classroom is making strong individual relationships with my students‌I pride myself in knowing the strengths of my students and what they need to improve on—that really guides PAGE A4

Over 200 people, including a number of judges, lawyers, and district attorneys, attended the ceremony, which took place inside the larger Presiding Judge’s Courtroom. The reception was held at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, featuring a performance from young a capella group The Filharmonic.

Julian’s father, Honorable Judge Mel Red Recana, was appointed by Gov. Brown 34 years ago as the first Filipino-American judge in the United States.

“I’m trying to find any other father-son judge duos in the US, and I still haven’t found any,” said Judge Mel. Mel also led his newly appointed son in taking the Oath of Office, while Julian’s wife Alexis and two daughters, Julia and Ava, led the enrobing.

“Also, I’ve decided to stay another 34 years—when my beloved granddaughters are next in line,” Mel joked. “This is truly a historic event for our family.”

Taking after his father as an experienced and seasoned defense lawyer, Julian joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 1999, seeking justice for victims of crime and murder. As a DA, he served in the Long Beach Courthouse for 11 years. During that time, he also became involved with various bar associations, including the Philippine American Bar Association (PABA), as a founding officer and assistant secretary.

Many of his colleagues and fellow attorneys were also present at the event to give remarks, including Asst. Head Deputy at the LA County District Attorney’s Office, Brian Schirn; the Honorable Judge Tomson Ong of the LA County Superior Court; and Atty. Hildegarde B. Aguinaldo.

Seven other Filipino judges were also present at the event, continuing the legacy of Filipino judges, including California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

Today, there are over 2,000 judges in the state of California -- 11 of them Filipino-American, nine of whom serve in Los Angeles County, and only one fatherand-son duo, the Recanas.

ther,” said Julian during his closing remarks. “[Mel] becoming a judge was a life-changing experience for me; he later became my coach. He always motivated me to work hard, and inspired me of what could be.”

Among his other accomplishments, Julian was honored last year with the California Journal for Filipino Americans Community Leadership Award, as well as the Association of Deputy District Attorney’s Prosecutor of the Month award for his successful work in a robbery-murder jury trial. Most recently, he received the prestigious National Asian Pacific Islander Prosecutors Association (NAPIPIA)’s “2015 Prosecutor of the Year.”

But Julian owes all of his success to family and especially to his late mother, Emerita Recana.

“Her spirit is here in this courtroom,” he said.

“You have made all of us proud, and especially Mom,” said his wife Alexis.

Philippine Consulate General Leo Herrera-Lim also applauded Julian’s appointment to the bench.

“We could not be any prouder for a guy like Julian, who really represents our community well…and more importantly, we get one more notch in having a Filipino judge in the California

judicial system,” Herrera-Lim told the Asian Journal. “We need more good people like Julian to serve as role models, and a representative for our community. I hope that while we celebrate today, that tomorrow we continue looking for our next judge.”

“For aspiring Filipinos, we should learn from the experience of Julian being appointed, and draw strength from our community, to make their own push as the Recana judges have,” he continued.

A key aspect of the father-andson appointments as Filipino judges is diversity on the bench.

“We are all striving for diversity, for the judiciary to protect all the people and represent their diversity. We need these different bar associations to find qualified candidates out there and become involved,” said Julian.

“It is my hope that me standing here today will inspire people who ever thought of filling out that application, to just do it. I hope one day I can be sitting in the audience watching someone take the great oath of becoming a judge too.”

Looking on at his father, his loving wife and two daughters, and his audience of enthused supporters, Julian smiled.

LOS ANGELES is another step closer toward the bid for the 2024 Olympics, following the city council’s approval on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Last week, a city council subcommittee focused on the Olympics approved recommendations city analysts made on the contract, before sending it to the full council for a vote.

In a 15-0 vote on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Garcetti now has the authority to pursue the bid with the US Olympic Committee (USOC). The council added that it wants to be included in the process for the next two years and vote on the final bid agreement that will be presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The USOC also confirmed at a press conference on Santa Monica Beach that LA will be its candidate to the IOC. “This is a great day for Los Angeles and a great day for the Olympic movement,” Garcetti said at the press conference.

Boston was a leading contender for the 2024 Olympics; however, in July the city dropped out due to the lack of public support and questions about taxpayer spending. The USOC said polling data shows that over 80 percent of LA’s residents are in support of hosting the Olympics.

An initial proposal for 2024 — released by Garcetti and sports executive Casey Wasserman — has a $4.1 billion budget, in addition to $150 million in

insurance premiums and $400 million for cost overruns, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“In Los Angeles, the spotlight is always on. We have the resources, experience and secure environment to share the biggest events with the world,” the proposal states.

The proposal further outlines renovation projects for existing venues, including the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (which estimates $800 million for seating upgrades and premium amenities) and a $500 million investment from the University of Southern California, according to the Associated Press.

Various events would be held throughout the city: gymnastics and basketball at the Staples Center, volleyball on Santa Monica Beach, road cyclists and marathon runners on Hollywood Boulevard and mountain bike racing in Griffith Park.

An Olympic Village “centrally located along the revitalized LA River to reduce travel times and provide a place to rest and prepare” for athletes is also included in the plan.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana and Chief Legislative Analyst Sharon Tso cautioned that acquiring and developing the site may “significantly exceed” the $1 billion budget.

The costs incurred by a host city and whether it benefits have been subjects of debate.

Sochi, Russia, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 2014, cost $51 billion and is considered the most expensive games to

date.

“It is vital to properly and sufficiently safeguard Angelenos and our city government from possible losses—and to avoid placing our city in a position wherein we might have to indemnify the US Olympic Committee or any other entity from losses they might incur,” LA City Controller Ron Galperin wrote in a letter to the council last week.

“The City did not assume that responsibility in 1984. Why would it assume that responsibility now? Since LA is the only US city currently willing to bid on the 2024 games, have we used this strong negotiating position to ask the USOC to cover any costs or provide any financial guarantees?,” Bonin wrote in a letter to Council President Herb Wesson on Friday, Aug. 28, according to the LA Times.

San Francisco offers bilingual ballots, including Filipino SAN FRANCISCO—The Department of Elections will introduce bilingual ballots for the November 3 election, each with content in English and one other language: Chinese, Spanish, or Filipino.

The Department is asking voters who prefer to receive election materials, including the official ballot and the Voter Information Pamphlet, in another language in addition to English to update their language preference.

Voters may do so by completing the form at sfelections.org/ language, by calling (415) 554-

4375, or by visiting the Department’s office.

Voters who have provided their language preference to the Department will receive a ballot in English and their preferred language either by mail, at the City Hall Voting Center, or at their polling place.

On Election Day, the Department will provide polling place signage indicating that three bilingual versions of the ballot are available. This information will be conveyed in English, Chinese, Spanish and Filipino on the sign placed on the Election Table, on each ballot card, and

on the Ballot Secrecy Folder issued to every voter.

Similarly, the vote-by-mail ballot packet will include information about availability of the three bilingual versions of the ballot.

Although the ballots in English and each aforementioned language will be available by mail, at the City Hall Voting Center, and at all polling places, San Francisco voters are encouraged to choose their preferred ballot language well before Election Day by providing their language preference at sfelections.org/ language. Advisory committee: Airlines should Clarkson OK’d to play for PH in decide on allowing in-flight calls FIBA, father says he won’t play by

A committee under the transportation Department on tuesday, Sept. 1, approved a recommendation stating that airlines should possess discretion in whether to allow passengers to make phone calls during flights.

“We recommend that if safe

and secure, that the Department of transportation allow airlines to decide whether to permit passengers to use mobile devices for voice calls,” said Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, who is chairman of the advisory panel, USA today reported. the panel, composed of four airline and consumer repre-

sentatives, met in Washington, according to Bloomberg. it also assesses the transportation Department’s consumer protection programs. the advisory committee’s recommendation comes more than one year after federal agencies gathered thousands of complaints against the possibility that the Federal communications commission (Fcc) would lift the ban. in December 2013, the Fcc agreed to consider removing the ban on in-flight calls, which went into effect in 1991. the proposal, however, drew much opposition: the Fcc collected 1,400 comments, virtually all of which were against it. members of congress said they would present legislation to ban calls if the Fcc decides to allow in-flight calls; travelers, among others, are not pleased with the idea of seat mates chatting while onboard packed flights. Flight attendants have also raised the possibility of terrorists using cellphones to communicate attacks.

“We’ll keep the wishes of our customers in mind if the rules governing cell phone use shift from the government to individual airlines,” matt miller, a spokesman for American Airlines Group inc., told Bloomberg.

Should the Fcc decide to permit mobile phones and devices, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety regulations would still remain in place, the Department of transportation said in a notice last year, according to Bloomberg. Before the ban is lifted, aircraft operators would need to confirm that equipment would not affect aircraft systems, the publication reported.

USA today reported that many foreign airlines already provide cellular service, including calls, demonstrating the safety, supporters say.

Fcc chairman tom Wheeler told congress that the reasoning behind the ban is no longer applicable as aircrafts today have their own cell towers, the publication reported. the advisory committee’s recommendation is non-binding, and the Fcc and transportation Department have yet to set a date on when to decide on the issue, according to USA today.

FiL-Am Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan clarkson has been cleared to play for the Philippines in the upcoming FiBA Asia championship, but his father says he won’t be participating.

“As you know in professional sports, timing is of the essence especially when managing a player’s career,” his father, mike clarkson, said in an email to USbased Philstar contributor Homer Sayson.

“Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t be worse as he [Jordan] prepares for rigors of the upcoming 2015-2016 NBA season and heightened performance expectations.” the FiBA championship is scheduled to take place from Sept.

23 through oct. 3 in china, but the Lakers training camp – which is mandatory for all the team’s players – begins Sept. 28. Given the overlapping schedules, manila Bulletin reported that clarkson would be able to play in three games for Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) – against Palestine on Sept. 23, Hong Kong on Sept.

24 and Kuwait on Sept. 25.

Philstar further reported that SBP officials are seeking to meet with clarkson’s father and Lakers management to alleviate concerns they may have. “our talk with the father is to reassure him that, from the time that he [Jordan] has not signed the contract [with the Lakers] to the time that he does, and if he gets injured while with Gilas, we will assure them during that period he will be properly taken care of,” SBP Vice chairman Ricky Vargas told Philstar. “We will be taking a risk anyway, whether he has a contract or not.”

CSUN biology professor, students, make discovery that could improve breast cancer treatments

A teAm of nine students and one biology professor from cal State Northridge (cSUN) have pinpointed a gene that can cause breast cancer to spread. the new finding, published in this month’s Public Library of Science one journal, could change the course of breast cancer treatment, researchers say.

Among women, breast cancer is the most common and constitutes 23 percent of all cancer cases, the study states. For women whose cancer metastasizes through the bloodstream, the survival rate is 24 percent. the discovery could lead to improved diagnoses of the cancer and innovative therapy for patients, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. “i think it can bust down the cancer house – at least do it damage,” cSUN biology professor

Jonathan Kelber told the newspaper. “it’s a battering ram. “essentially, we’re going to cripple the house cancer and stop it in its tracks.”

Kelber and his students found that a gene called PeAK1 affects a protein known as tGF beta, which typically regulates cell growth and suppresses tumors. they found that PeAK1 serves as an important “support wall” for cancer cells, which promotes metastasis to various parts of the body. in certain breast cancers, the team discovered tGF-beta protein causes a swift conversion of benign tumor cells to malignant ones, in turn speeding up the progression of the cancer. “that is our discovery: that PeAK1 converts tGF-beta from good to bad,” Kelber said, according to the Daily News. “So this is the first set of reports to uncover the functioning mechanism of how breast cancer pro-

gresses. this can lead to therapy for breast cancer and has the potential to improve patient outcome.”

How the change of the cells occur remains a topic for future research. the cSUN study has received positive feedback from oncologists, including Dr. Julia tchou, breast cancer surgeon at the Abramson cancer center of the University of Pennsylvania and an associate professor at the school. tchou said the university’s research underlines a “novel strategy” that can target the interaction between the tGF-beta protein, the PeAK1 gene and tumor cells to stop them from spreading, according to the Daily News.

“As our understanding of the tumor cell and its micro-environmental deepens, we no longer think of tumor cells as the only therapeutic target within the tumor,” she said in a statement.

MANILA—If she was made the sacrificial lamb, she’s unaware of it, and Leila de Lima does not intend to quit as secretary of justice, tomorrow or in the next several days, as part of an alleged deal with the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

Demonized in street protests by the religious sect, De Lima returned to her office on Monday, Aug. 31 declaring she is not quitting over accusations that she has given “extraordinary attention” to a criminal complaint filed by an expelled minister against some of the INC’s leaders.

She issued the statement as the INC ended its four-day protest and declared “victory” after reportedly striking a deal with the government.

At Malacañang, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. also said De Lima would stay in her post and denied a compromise was reached with the INC. “Nothing has changed in the situation. The rule of law will continue to be enforced. Secretary De Lima has the full trust and confidence of the President,” Coloma said.

“I am not resigning today or in the next few days or several days because there is no reason for me to resign,” De Lima told reporters in Filipino.

“About the supposed deal, as far as I know there is no such deal,” she stressed.

“I will resign in due time and you know when that due time is… I will resign if I have already decided 100 percent to join the senatorial race,” she stressed.

De Lima added she has “lots of work to do.”

The filing of certificates of candidacy is in October.

The INC protest actions stemmed from De Lima’s alleged singling out for investigation complaints of harassment, illegal detention, threats and coercion filed by expelled minister Isaias Samson Jr. and his family against a group of ministers.

De Lima declined to comment on the allegations. “I ask for understanding if I am not issuing any statement (about the INC allegations). I just would like to avoid a situation where I will be misquoted or my statement will be distorted, which may cause

another misunderstanding,” she explained.

She also declined to comment when asked if the preliminary investigation into Samson’s complaint would proceed.

The camp of Samson earlier expressed fears of possible whitewash of his complaint following the reported “agreement” between the government and the INC leadership as announced by the church’s general evangelist Bienvenido Santiago.

Samson’s lawyer Trixie CruzAngeles said that with recent developments, the dismissal of Samson’s complaint “is a very real possibility.” She said the government should be transparent and tell the people about any supposed agreement.

Palace officials have already denied the supposed agreement, saying what has transpired was just an understanding to end the protest.

Support for de Lima As public support for De Lima in social networking sites continued to grow, a 67-year-old engineer went to the DOJ to personally express support for the embattled Cabinet secretary.

Jose Kwe stood outside the DOJ compound where thousands of INC members held their rally last Thursday and Friday, carrying a placard calling on De Lima not to be cowed by the protest.

“I want her to know that there are people who believe in her,” he explained to reporters.

Kwe said writing his opinions in streamers and tarpaulins is his way of getting his message across.

He recalled being sent to prison during the martial law days for fighting for what was right.

Case to proceed Coloma told reporters they have given no special accommodation to the INC, adding “we have always been on top of the situation.”

He emphasized that the maximum tolerance given to INC members by the police was not a form of special treatment.

He also said the Palace had never felt hostaged by the INC during its protest activities that clogged traffic in Metro Manila and disrupted services at many establishments.

He said De Lima herself announced that the case filed by Samson would be subjected to legal processes.

“There was an information or complaint, there is a process for that. Those who filed that could freely submit information and evidence and let the truth set us free,” Coloma said.

Asked if there was an investigation into possible destabilization or whether the case filed against INC top ministers could be considered closed, Coloma said there was a permit for the INC street protest and that no law on public order had been violated.

Coloma said there had been many instances when certain groups had been allowed to air their sentiments at rallies even without permits from local governments.

“The government balances the situation in such a way that the paramount significance of public order and safety will be maintained,” Coloma said.

“The government remains effective, it fulfills its duty and addresses the situation,” Coloma added.

Samson said INC’s highest governing council violated church doctrine and the teachings of the Bible in “deceiving” members into staging protest actions against a government official and into staging rallies behind a misguided cause.

“The problem is that they have misled the members of the Church of Christ by telling them that the reason they need to rally is because I filed a case against Brother Eduardo Manalo (INC executive minister) and that he will soon be arrested,” Samson said in an interview with the Inquirer.

He called on INC members to be discerning, directly addressing them: “I hope you thoroughly examine what’s happening. It is not true that I sued Brother Eduardo Manalo. It is not true that I am against the Iglesia, that it is the church that I am fighting.”

Before he was expelled from the sect, Samson was a minister for more than 40 years. He was the council member in charge of foreign missions and editor in chief of the INC official organ.

“First of all, it makes me feel so sad because what is going on now places the church in a very embarrassing position. But I don’t blame myself,” Samson told the Inquirer in an interview in one of his hiding places.

Sought for comment, INC spokesman Edwil Zabala said in a text message, “I will not dignify Mr. Samson’s statement with an answer.”

Benigno Aquino III said as he paid tribute to the Philippine national heroes at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on Monday, Aug. 31. This year’s theme is “Bayaning Pilipino Noon at Ngayon: Ang Simula at Tagapagpatuloy ng Malawakang Pagbabago (The Filipino Hero Then and Now: Where Transformation Begins and Continues).”

As Aquino led the wreath-laying ceremony for the fallen Filipinos and Filipinas, he remembered their sacrifices and challenged today’s generation, to turn themselves from meek individuals into successful men and women that may collectively hone a better and brighter future for the country.

“We pay tribute to the sacrifices offered by Philippine heroes. As we honor them, so too are we called to do our part and to continue the battle they began—whether in a small, or a big way—for the betterment of our nation,” Aquino said.

On the same day, Aquino also led the conferment of awards to the five recipients of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Awards this year. Their enduring journey left us with a great example to live by. We are all called to live like heroes, not to make a mark in the world through suffering or death—but to appeal similar lives, for our kababayans and our country.

The rise of anti-establishment candidates: Move over Clinton, Bush and even Trump?

THOUGH a candidate most Democrats outside of the state of Vermont have never heard of, Senator Bernie Sanders has proven a sustained upward climb in the polls, possibly threatening the frontrunner status of former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A new poll among Iowa caucus goers, the first to hold the primary in the 2016 US Presidential Elections, proves just that.

A survey released last Saturday, Aug. 29 by the Des Moines Register and Bloomberg Politics revealed that Clinton has lost 1/3rd of her supporters since May, and that Bernie Sanders continues to cut into Hillary Clinton’s once-commanding lead among Iowa Democrats, closing to just 7 points of Clinton in Iowa. Sanders now trails Clinton 37 percent to 30 percent. CNN reports that just last January, half of likely Democratic caucus goers were unfamiliar with Sanders, and he was pulling in just 5 percent of support.

According to CNN, the poll finds that Sanders’ support is more due to voters’ enthusiasm for his candidacy and his message, rather than opposition to Clinton. An overwhelming 96 percent of those who support Sanders say they support him and his ideas. Only 2 percent say their vote is motivated by a desire to stop a Clinton candidacy.

The report further says that as for the controversy surrounding Clinton’s use of email while

leading the State Department, 61 percent of likely Democratic The Fil-Am caucus goers say the issue is not Perspective important to them.

The poll further reveals that Sanders “has a deeper reservoir of support”, with 39 percent of likely caucus goers say their feelings about Sanders are very Gel SantoS-ReloS favorable and just 8 percent having a negative view of him. In contrast to Clinton: 27 percent view her very favorably, but 19 percent view her negatively.

Sanders has been running a campaign that has put forth a platform of how the government should help ordinary Americans, providing them with basic services like health care, education, higher wages, stronger protection of consumer rights, instead of the government being run and manipulated by powerful oligarchs, benefitting the richest of the rich in society, at the expense of the middle class.

Sanders’ appeal has been further strengthened by the consistency of and commitment to his message since the 1980s, a stark contrast to his political opponents.

“What this new poll shows is that the more Iowans get to know Bernie, the better they like him and what he stands for. We’ve seen the same thing

in New Hampshire and across the country,” CNN quoted Sanders’ campaign spokesman Michael Briggs.

Meanwhile, the same poll further says that Vice President Joe Biden, [he has not declared his candidacy for president], captured 14 percent of the vote, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (3 percent), former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (2 percent) and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (1 percent).

Carson ties with Trump For the first time in more than a month, real estate mogul and reality show star Donald Trump’s frontrunner status is now being threatened by a newbie in politics and another anti-establishment candidate, Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon.

Carson has surged up in the pack to tie Trump in Iowa, according to the results of the poll released

by Monmouth University on Monday, Aug. 31.

According to the survey, Trump and Carson are now tied at 23 percent. CNN reported that this is the first time since July 26 that a poll in the first four states to select a Republican nominee did not find Trump substantially ahead of all other candidates.

CNN further reported that according to the Monmouth poll, farther behind Trump and Carson

were former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina at 10 percent; Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 9 percent; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 7 percent; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 5 percent; Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, each at 4 percent; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul at 3 percent; and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum at 2 percent. CNN added that no other candidates topped 1 percent.

This is a big change from the Iowa poll conducted by Monmouth University, taken before the first Republican debate. In late July, Walker led with 22 percent, Trump had 13 percent, Carson had 8 percent and Fiorina was at 3 percent.

A CNN/ORC poll taken in early August revealed that Trump’s lead had diminished, compared to the results of the latest Monmouth survey in Iowa.

Trump was then at 22 percent, Carson was at 14 percent, Walker was at 9 percent, Cruz was at 8 percent and Fiorina was at 7 percent.

The curse of incompetence and insensitivity THERE’S this joke about a little boy Street anxious to see his expectant mother give Talk birth. She explains that it will take several months for the baby to come out.

The boy then recalls GreG B. MacaBenta how his engineer father had told his workers on a rush project to “put more men on the job,” to hasten its completion.

“Mom,” says the boy. “Why don’t you put more men on the job?”

If you think that’s funny, guess what the administration of Benigno S. Aquino III has been doing the past five-going-on-six years. The classic example is the Department of Agriculture, notorious for incompetence and accused of corruption. Instead of replacing the Secretary of Agriculture, Proceso Alcala, Aquino appointed former Senator Kiko Pangilinan as “Agricultural Czar” or some title to that effect. Aquino put more men on the job.

Now comes this congressman from Quezon City, Winston Castillo (eager to have his 15 seconds of fame), suggesting that the solution to Metro Manila’s traffic woes would be for Malacañang to appoint a “traffic czar.”

That’s a traffic czar placed on top of a traffic czar (the MMDA chairman) on top of several traffic czars (the Metro Manila mayors). And THAT is supposed to solve the infernal traffic problem?

Good grief!

The management geniuses who populate the Makati Business Club and who recently rated the various government offices, ostensibly based on perceived efficiency, should tell the idiots running

the government that overlayering is a formula for confusion and hand-washing.

In other words, the more cooks working on the broth, the more difficult it is to pinpoint who spoiled it.

This reminds me of the tragedy-on-top-of-a-tragedy that destroyed my hometown of Tacloban.

The original tragedy was super typhoon Yolanda. The tragedy on top of it was the presence of three Keystone Kops, Mar Roxas of DILG, Dinky Soliman of Social Welfare and Voltaire Gazmin of Defense.

In a press conference with Roxas presiding (which I wrote about in this column), the following dialogue was recorded by Rappler: “RAPPLER: Sino po ba ang ground commander natin sa relief operations na ito? (Who is the ground commander in this relief operation?)

“ROXAS: There is no such title dahil ayon sa NDRRMC, it’s Sec Voltz Gazmin ang aming chairman, at ina-assignassign niya kami sa kung ano ang aming dapat gawin. (There is no such title because according to the NDRRMC, it’s Sec Voltz Gazmin who is our chairman, and he assigns us to do whatever we have to do. ) “RAPPLER: Pero sir, who is calling the shots here in this center? (But sir, who is calling the shots here in this center?)

“ROXAS: Wala. You can see the process that is being undertaken, and it is a consultative process. (No one. You can see the process that is being undertaken, and it is a consultative process.)

“SOLIMAN: Lahat kami, buong pamahalaan, pambansa at lokal, kumikilos as one. But more than that, ‘yun ang gusto kong ipaalam sa lahat – it’s also whole of society. Lahat ng private sector, lahat ng volunteers, lahat ng volunteers dito sa Tacloban, nagre-repack sila. This is whole of society, responding to a crisis. Nagkaisa ang bansa; ‘yun ang ating mensahe. (Everyone of us, the whole of government, national and local, move as one. But more than this, what I want everyone to know – it’s also whole of society. The entire private sector, all volunteers, all volunteers here in Tacloban are repacking. This is whole of society, responding to a crisis. The nation is working as one; that’s our message.)’

But Roxas, Soliman and Gazmin were not done yet. Soliman then explained an “operations management concept” which she called, “the Convergent Approach.”

Here’s what I wrote in reaction to that: “I did a double-take and struggled to find an analogy for ‘Convergent Approach.’ In football, that means operating without a quarterback. In a symphony orchestra, without a conductor.

In the corporate environment, without a CEO. In the military, without a commanding officer.

“Apparently, in the Roxas-Soliman Institute of Advanced Operations Management, as applied to the Yolanda crisis, the Convergent Approach is one where every player is left to his or her own best intentions, based on respective levels of competence or incompetence.”

In an earlier meeting between Roxas and Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez, Roxas had required the latter to submit a formal request for disaster assistance

from the national government, otherwise, “Bahala kayo sa buhay niyo.”

Roxas, who is supposed to have studied management in an elite university in America, has since become famous for classic responses to the problems of the country. The latest is his rationale for the infernal traffic problems: It’s supposed to be a result of the “booming” economy. No solution. Just a rationalization. He might as well have said, “Bahala kayo sa buhay niyo.”

Come to think of it, that is what the occupant in Malacañang practically told the suffering folks of Metro Manila, if we are to assume that the palace spokespersons are articulating the thoughts of the president of the country.

According to one Manila daily, Deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte has asked the public “to be patient” in the face of the metropolis’ “traffic woes.”

The news report was about how “vehicles clogged and barely crawled along Andrews Avenue, Airport Road and Sucat Road – vital arteries leading to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s terminals 1,2,3 and 4.”

The news item further stated: “Valte said they received a report that a big number of people failed to make it to their flights because of the ongoing construction works in the Villamor Air Base area. She said airport authorities had been advising the public to consider the heavy traffic because of construction projects when planning their trips.”

Well, what choice do the poor motorists, air travelers and commuters have except to “plan their trips”? The reason, of course, is because the idiots behind the massive construction projects did not do their mandatory part of the

planning.

Let me cite two examples of competent planning and concern for the convenience of the commuting public (as opposed to the palpak and manhid approach of this administration): the massive expansion of the San Francisco International Airport and the replacement of the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

To ensure that commuters and air travelers would not be inconvenienced, the plans and budgets for both projects included alternative routes that commuters could take, while the main thoroughfares were under construction.

This meant a temporary bridge from Treasure Island to the Oakland side while the original bridge (part of which had collapsed during the 1988 Loma Prieta earthquake) was being demolished and a new span was being built.

In the case of the expansion of the San Francisco International Airport, air travelers hardly felt any inconvenience because of the alternative arteries prepared prior to the main construction activity.

Compare that with what’s happening in Metro Manila, something that I am painfully aware of because I live just off Sucat in Parañaque. I will give my comments in Tagalog so that our non-Filipino readers will not understand me: “Pinagsabay-sabay ang tinamaan ng lintik na construction at bahala na tayong mga taong bayan sa buhay natin.

Diyos ko. Bakit ba tayo pinarurusahan ng mga bobo?”

Ombudsman to appeal SC ruling on Enrile bail Palace to Ombudsman: PNoy immune from suit

MANILA—The Office of the Ombudsman will appeal the controversial Supreme Court (SC) decision granting Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile bail on humanitarian grounds.

“We are about to file a motion for reconsideration with the SC on the case of Senator Enrile,” Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales told the House appropriations committee chaired by Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab.

She said she could not discuss the merits of the case because it is pending resolution by the high tribunal.

Enrile was detained for one year before the SC freed him on bail.

He is facing plunder and graft cases before the Sandiganbayan in connection with the alleged misuse of millions in his pork barrel funds.

Also facing the same charges are Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr., businesswoman

Janet Lim-Napoles, the suspected mastermind of the multibillionpeso pork barrel scam, some senior aides of the three senators and officers of state corporations used as conduits of the senators’ funds.

In the course of a wide-ranging media interview last week, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno said the Enrile bail ruling was not yet final.

She told journalists who asked about the case to just “wait, wait.”

The high tribunal freed Enrile on an 8-4 vote, with Justice Lucas Bersamin writing the majority decision. Justice Marvic Leonen wrote the dissent, which Sereno and Justices Antonio Carpio and Estela Perlas-Bernabe shared.

In his dissent, Leonen said the constitutional and legal grounds cited by Enrile in pleading for bail were not the reasons the Bersamin majority used in freeing the Cagayan senator.

PAGE A5 He said that in the past days, the government had focused on public order and safety and on ensuring that the INC protest actions would be peaceful and orderly.

“The government just did its duty according to laws, and there is no aspect in the relationship (with the INC) that could have been negatively affected,” Coloma said.

But he said the administration did not have any “crystal ball” to determine whether the INC would no longer hold rallies because citizens—whether as individuals or as legitimate organizations—have the right to express themselves and to assemble publicly.

Asked how it would deal with future rallies and ensure that the rights of the majority would be respected and protected, Coloma said they would balance in every opportunity the rights of the protesters and those of the general public so there would be no chaos or public disturbance that would likely bring more serious repercussions to society and the country.

“We will enforce the law. This is through enforcement of ordinances and regulations related to holding of assemblies,” Coloma said when asked about what could be done in case the rallies would become disruptive again.

Coloma said the rule of law was

always enforced, taking into account the “principle of the greatest good for the greatest number,” but he also noted the “spectrum of different opinions and views is wide” and maximum tolerance must be exercised.

The INC rallies started on Padre Faura in Manila on Thursday and moved to the EDSA Shrine in Mandaluyong City on Friday before converging on the busy EDSA-Shaw Boulevard intersection, stalling traffic and triggering public outrage.

The Mandaluyong City government gave the protesters permit to hold rallies until Monday morning but they secured another permit from Manila to continue their actions until Sept. 4.

However, the INC leadership decided on Monday to end their rallies.

Interior and Local Government Manuel Roxas II was quoted as saying that some groups wanted to exploit the situation but gave no details.

There were also reports that the INC decided to cut short its protest actions—which reportedly had failed to attract the desired number of members—after being given an ultimatum by the government.

As early as Thursday, there had been talks that INC was not just targeting De Lima but was actually planning to extend their rallies all

the way to Malacañang.

Their failure, however, to carry out their plans would need a facesaving move, reports said, and that would be to announce that an understanding had been reached with the government.

Before Aquino met with members of the Cabinet Sunday night, there had been reports that a Palace representative—Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.—managed to discuss with INC officials and members the group’s sentiments against the administration.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda thanked the INC for ending the rallies and said the rule of law prevailed.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte stressed no deal was struck between the government and the INC. “We did not bow to anyone.

What we stood for was the welfare of the Filipino people, we let the rule of law prevail,” Coloma said.

If the INC was claiming victory, Coloma said everyone was free to make any proclamation as long as they were not violating any laws and infringing on the rights of others.

The Palace has been emphasizing that freedom should come with responsibility and that opportunists should not be given the chance to take advantage of situations like the INC rallies.

MANILA—Amid the ongoing probe on the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), Malacañang reminded the Office of the Ombudsman on Tuesday, Sept.

1 that the chief executive enjoys immunity from lawsuit.

“We wish to point out the Constitutional principle that an incumbent President of the Philippines is immune from suit,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a note to media.

According to reports, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales revealed this morning that her office is now investigating Aquino and Budget Secretary Florencio Abad in connection with the implementation of the controversial DAP. Morales made the revelation in reply to a question during a hearing on the proposed budget of her office in the House of Representatives.

Coloma said they respect the authority of the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate the president.

“The Office of the Ombudsman is empowered by law to conduct such investigation,” Coloma said.

in 2011, the DAP realigned government savings from slow-moving projects to other programs to supposedly fast-track public spending and stimulate the economy.

In 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) unanimously declared certain acts under the DAP as unconstitutional for violating the doctrine of separation of powers and the constitutional provision prohibiting the inter-branch transfer of budget allocations.

The high court ruled that “authors, proponents and implemen-

tors” of the DAP such as Aquino and Abad can have criminal, civil, administrative and other liabilities “unless there are concrete findings of good faith in their favor by the proper tribunals.”

The SC ruling against the DAP sparked calls for the resignation of Aquino and Abad and an impeachment attempt on the president.

Aquino and Abad had consistently defended the DAP, saying the program was done in good faith and benefited the nation.

“When you talk about separation of church and state, there should be religious freedom. But why would they [invoke] that? Does it mean if they committed a crime, the government or the law has no power over them?” Samson said.

Submit to laws of man “They have to remember, they are also citizens of this country, and as such they are under the laws of this country,” he said.

He reminded the council of the INC doctrine “that we should submit to the laws of man, be it to a king or a governor.”

“That is written in the Bible: ‘Give to Caesar what is due to Caesar.’

Now, how come that they are in trouble, they don’t want to submit themselves [to the legal process]?”

Samson said.

Not internal problem The former minister further said his case may no longer be considered an “internal” issue, as he had already been expelled and was thus no longer bound by INC rules.

“They’re saying this is an internal problem. But there is a contradiction in that. How can they say it’s

an internal problem when they have already expelled me? An expelled member is no longer considered a member of the organization,” he said.

‘Hostess ‘siya’ Samson scoffed at the actions of some ministers who spoke during the protests, citing in particular how one even used a play of words to call De Lima “hostess siya” instead of “hustisya (justice).”

“Can you imagine a minister, a very well-respected person in the church would suddenly call Secretary De Lima, instead of “hustisya,” “hostess siya?” he asked.

“Can you imagine what kind of people are these? You see how much they have turned for the worse. It breaks my heart to see and hear those ministers saying all those words,” he added, saying the sect normally does not tolerate such behavior.

Disclose details of meeting Wary about the status of his case, Samson called on President Aquino and De Lima to give his family genuine justice and to give clarity to what really transpired during the government-INC meeting that prompted the protesters to finally

go home.

“We hope that you will continue to help people like us who are oppressed. We know that God is most powerful of all, but we are also faithful that God uses people like you to give us justice,” he said.

Malacañang has denied that government made a deal with INC just so the protesters, whose numbers peaked at 20,000 on Edsa at 1am on Monday, would go home.

Samson said the circumstances remained vague despite the denial.

“Although I heard that the Palace denied it made any agreement, that is still vague because, on the other hand, INC is saying it is victorious because the government had given in to its demand,” Samson said.

‘Using each other’ “It has to be explained. The Palace should be very transparent on this because that’s my only protection,” he said.

Asked if he sensed unseen hands maneuvering the situation, Samson said: “I think there are some political figures, personalities, who are trying to use the church, although I feel also that the Sanggunian is also trying to use them.”

“They are using each other,” he said.

“All dreams are valid!”

Xyza Cruz Bacani wrote that blissful post on her Facebook wall the morning she found out that she was one of seven fellows chosen by Magnum Foundation to undergo an intensive six-week Human Rights Fellowship at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. little did she know then that her life as she knew it was about to make a 180 degree turn.

We caught up with Xyza a few weeks after her program ended.

We met outside NYU, at the Washington Square Park, in downtown Manhattan. Under the heat of the summer sun, we chatted about her life in Hong Kong, her family and her ultimate dream.

The 27-year-old street photographer is compassionate, cheerful and straight-forward.

She left her family in Nueva Vizcaya in 2006 to join her mother who was a domestic worker in

On and offstage with Broadway actress Deedee Magno Hall

If life is one big stage production, then everyone plays a role: mothers and fathers, daughters, sons, siblings, students, workers, even humanitarians and CEOs. As William Shakespeare put it, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…and one man in his time plays many parts.” for filipina actress Deedee Lynn Magno Hall, life has many different stages, and on each she has had many roles -- from a peasant bargirl, to a Wicked Witch, an Arabian princess, and an alien crystal gem.

But her most favorite role to play is herself.

“This is what I love to do,” she told the Asian Journal. “I am so blessed and grateful to be able to perform and act for a living, for my whole life, and to also provide for my family. To be able to do what I love and say that’s my job?

It’s wonderful.” for Deedee, performing has been a series of blessings in disguise: her first audition, her first lead role, finding love and beginning a family. It didn’t happen all at once; rather, like a musical, her life has had many acts. At 40, with two kids and an exciting role in a new touring musical, Deedee’s show has just begun.

Act I: Growing up, Mickey Mouse Club, & The Party Deedee was raised in sunny San Diego, California, where her Navy family relocated from Portsmouth, Virginia. Her dad is from Baguio, while her mom

grew up in Manila.

“I really wish my parents had taught me fluent Tagalog. They didn’t want us to grow up with an accent or have difficulties in school,” she recounted about her upbringing. “But aside from language, we were so immersed in filipino culture—we always ate the food and had movies, music playing in our house. I always gravitated toward Sharon Cuneta, of course.”

She grew up listening to Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and a variety of filipino singers, including Cuneta, Kuh Ledesma, Regine Velasquez, Vilma Santos, Lea Salonga, and Gary Valenciano.

“They’re some of my biggest vocal influences,” she said. “filipinos are amazing singers.”

Encouraged by her parents and three siblings, she often performed at school talent shows, local competitions and pageants.

As a child, she was a sensation at family “pancit parties,” where the house karaoke machine was a must.

She remembers her first large stage performance—a humble singing gig at a new park attraction at SeaWorld. “I was hooked,” she said. “Afterwards, I always knew I wanted to perform.”

After quickly gaining local fame and performing a few gigs, Deedee and her family knew this would be her full-time commitment. When she was 12, she traveled across the country to Orlando, florida to audition for the revival of an audience-favorite variety TV show, The Mickey

“We sang and danced, performed comedy skits and music videos, interviewed outstanding kids and celerity guests,” Deedee recalled of her first professional acting job. “It was like ‘Saturday Night Live’ but for kids. It was fantastic, because at such a young age I got to learn many different aspects of the entertainment business: being in front of the camera, knowing my blocking, live audience participation, choreography and lighting, etc.”

“It was like an acting school.

[The Mickey Mouse Club] provided great training for what was to come in my future,” she remarked. “And of course, filming on a set so close to Disney World, we snuck out sometimes for a few rides and ice cream bars between lessons.” from 1989 until 1991, Deedee was a TV Mouseketeer until Hollywood Records noticed her distinct voice and all-around talent. She was recruited to a new teen pop group, “The Party,” where she recorded and traveled worldwide for a few years. The Party’s initial success landed it opening-act spots on major tours, with artists such as Hi-five, Taylor Dayne and Vanilla Ice. “It was so exciting, especially at such a young age, to be traveling and performing everywhere.

And all with the amazing support of my family, who has worked hard and sacrificed so much for me,” she added, tearing up. “I really owe it all to them. It could not have been a more perfect beginning of a career.”

Act II: Miss Saigon and PrinDeedee in sensation teen pop group, “The cess Jasmine Party.”

At 19 years old, Deedee found herself in Los Angeles auditioning among hundreds of girls for a new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, “Sunset Boulevard.”

“My first thought was, I don’t look anything like these tall, blonde, long-legged women.

But my manager told me to stick it out. And it ended up being the greatest blessing,” Deedee shared. “The casting managers called me back not too long after my audition, only it wasn’t for ‘Sunset Boulevard’—but for the Toronto company cast of ‘Miss Saigon.’”

At the time, due to an important family trip to the Philippines, Deedee as Princess Jasmine in Disney Deedee ended up not taking the California Adventure’s Aladdin: A Musical part. But her initial “no” ended up a huge blessing in disguise.

Spectacular.

Not long after her return, Deedee was offered the starring lead role of Kim in the 2nd US national tour of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical drama, “Miss Saigon.”

“Of course, I freaked out,” she remembered. “I had seen the show in London with my mom a few years before, and I fell in love with the role. I told my mom, I want to play that part. I wanted to play Kim.” from 1995 and several years afterward, Deedee toured the country in her first major theatrical role. She also played Kim for a time on the Broadway cast, following veteran Lea Salonga’s departure in New York City.

“Lea is lovely,” Deedee gushed when asked about working with Salonga, at the “Suites by Sondheim” show sponsored by the Philippine Development foundation in 2011. “We never quite worked together in Broadway, most likely because we’re often auditioning for the same roles.

But she has always been one of my musical idols.”

Deedee also shared of her deep connection with the show, and how it has opened many doors for her professional and personal life.

“In retrospect, if I were given the opportunity to play a role again, it would be Kim. I think now after having my own children, I would have a deeper connection to the role. Singing the words, ‘I’d Give My Life for You’ would mean so much more, and I’m sure it would be extremely difficult to get through night after night without a good cry.”

Expanding her colorful acting resume, Deedee has had several roles in major films and productions, including “Sister Act 2”, the Tony award-winning “Wicked” (as Nessa Rose), and a brief run in the contemporary musical “If/Then” (as ensemble part/understudy). In 2003, she also played the original Princess Jasmine in Disney’s “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular” showing at Disney’s California Adventure.

“Alan Menken wrote a new song for the show, and it was amazing to be featured on the original soundtrack,” Deedee shared. “And in ‘Wicked,’ at the time, I was the first filipina to play Nessa Rose, which was special because they hired someone who didn’t look Caucasian. And someone said, ‘It makes sense; you are the Wicked Witch of the

East!’ ” Her most recent, favorite role was playing Mrs. Walker in the Los Angeles-based East West Players’ rock musical production of The Who’s “Tommy.” She also got to play the part alongside her husband, Cliffton Hall.

“I’ve been a fan of EWP for years. I think more and more because of things like East West Players, and theater companies that promote heritage and encourage diversity onstage, it is slowly getting to a point in entertainment where people are going to be colorblind.”

Deedee continued, “I’ve been so blessed to be able to play roles where it didn’t matter what I looked like—I could be the Wicked Witch of the East, Captain Walker’s wife, or Princess Jasmine. for most of the roles I’ve done, the color of my skin was not an issue.”

“I hope my own kids experience that same diversity in this industry. There are so many issues and stories to tell, and so many resources to share them. If you don’t see those stories being played out, then maybe it’s your destiny to write them, act upon them, and put them out there for yourself.”

Act III: Finding love on and offstage Deedee’s first major role in “Miss Saigon” was not only a turning point in her onstage career, but also a real-life opportunity for romance.

“It was also my first experience to do a love scene in front of people…and little did I know, it was where I would meet my husband,” she smiled.

In 1995, during the 2nd national touring company of “Miss Saigon,” Deedee met a filipinoJapanese-Caucasian actor from Hawaii named Cliffton Hall, who just so happened to be playing her love interest (Chris, an American GI soldier). They were both 19 years old.

“I always thought he was so cute and nice, and we were such good friends,” she shared. “I fell in love with my leading man. You put two people together onstage and they fall in love every night; it was inevitable.”

The two reunited several years later, after Deedee re- joined the Broadway company of “Miss Saigon.” Cliffton was also in New York, starring as Marius in a revival of “Les Misérables.”

“We were, first and foremost, always good friends, and then things just kind of happened. We were initially scared of destroying our friendship, but it always felt right in the end, like it was honestly meant to be,” Deedee said.

As a couple, Deedee and Cliffton worked briefly together as Kim and Chris in “Miss Saigon” on Broadway, then later joined the international tour for six months in Singapore and Hong Kong. They also starred opposite one another in the first national tour of “Wicked,” playing Nessa Rose and fiyero.

“We didn’t have any scenes together, but we were always sneaking kisses backstage. And at the end of the show at curtain call, I got to hold his hand!” she shared excitedly.

She and Cliffton were married in 2003. Their first son, Kaeden, was born in 2005—around when Deedee was playing the original Princess Jasmine in “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular,” and Cliffton was departing for the “Wicked” tour. Brycen, 4, was born in 2011.

“During shows, the hardest thing about [our jobs] sometimes is having to leave our sons at home. Luckily, my family has always been so gracious, helping me take care of them while Cliffton and I are out every night onstage,” she said.

“Now we’re getting ready to start homeschooling them on the road, so that we can stay together while we travel. We’re very excited for our family adventure.”

Act IV: Telling her story Over the years of building her life around her family and passion, Deedee has kept herself quite busy.

Recently, she has been voice acting in a new animated Cartoon Network series, “Steven Universe,” as the fun-loving alien crystal companion, Pearl.

“It is so, so fun!” she exclaimed. “I’ve always wanted to be a cartoon character, or at least the voice of one. And this show is a perfect combination of music and voice acting, where we’re definitely acting out even though we’re not on camera. Our cheeks are always hurting when we record in the studio.”

Her two sons and their Universe-loving friends think “Mrs. Pearl” is a hit.

O’Brian and Pokwang played similar roles in the movie “edsa woolworth,” which was instrumental in getting them together.

O’Brian said in a recent press conference that he was in the country for a vacation with his girlfriend Pokwang when he was called for a possible TV project. “i went in and auditioned,” said O’Brian. He soon got the role, which seems like it was specifically designed for him. when asked by reporters to describe misconceptions about Filipino-American relationships, O’Brian gave a rather candid response.

PAGE B1 told the Asian Journal. so here they were, mother and daughter working as domestic workers. Hong Kong statistics say that Xyza and her mother are two out of the 320,000 domestic workers in the former British colony.

Through the years of living in Hong Kong, she realized that her mother is a workaholic. she doesn’t go out as much and prefers to stay at home during her days off.

One day, Xyza asked her if she can buy a camera. Her mother said, ‘Pang-mayaman lang yun.’ eventually, her mom relented.

Xyza borrowed money from their employer to add to her extra funds so she can buy the camera she wanted. initially, this was the reason why she went into photography—for her mom to see the outside world. “i became her eye. Until now, i still send her photos from new York, the food, the places,” Xyza remarked. “in a way, she became my inspiration.” it was this inspiration that drove her to hone her photography skills, which she did by reading up, observing fellow photographers and listening to those who were giving her advice.

Both her parents were crying when she broke to them the news that she was selected to go to new York for the Magnum scholarship.

Asked what her mother told her later, she remarked. “she was very happy but she always tells me to be very careful. May katigasan kasi ang ulo ko. i’m stubborn like that.”

“Para-paraan lang. sa Occupy Hong Kong, i was there on the frontline. nati-tear gas ako and everything. iyak iyak ako, it’s exciting. it makes me feel alive. Pero kapag hindi na ako nag su-shoot, boring na akong tao,” she said laughing.

Occupy Central On her day off, Xyza would explore the nooks and crannies of Hong Kong, photographic people and the street landscape. “i do street photography most of the time. i find it challenging. it’s not just about going outside and pressing the shutter, it’s about composition and light, and feelings. i love watching people,” she said.

Xyza prefers the medium of black and white because for her, sometimes colors become a distraction. “i cannot really recognize color that much, i see the reds and the blues, yung mga matitingkad.

Hong Kong is very gray and it’s very good for black and white. it’s also nice to play with people’s emotions using black and white, mas direct siya,” Xyza added.

Then last year, the world took notice when Hong Kong residents began staging peaceful protests calling for the chief executive’s resignation. it was eventually called Occupy Central, referring to the area in Hong Kong where the protesters congregated.

Xyza went to the protests to shoot because she felt that the events will become part of history. “it might not happen again, or it might, but i won’t be there. My purpose then was to record Hong Kong history,” she quipped. she began posting her photos on Facebook and through the power of sharing, san Francisco-based

photojournalist rick rocamora saw her photos and asked her what she does for a living.

“He thought i’m just a spoiled brat taking pictures. He was surprised when i told him i’m a domestic worker. sabi niya, ‘Oh my god, i found the next Vivian Maier.”

Then he forwarded my photos to new York Times and their photo editors liked them, with her story ending on the Lens section or the photojournalism blog of the newspaper of record.

“And the ball started rolling from there. i’m now a full-time photographer!” she beamed.

Magnum Foundation/NYU Scholarship One of her colleagues, sim Chi Yin encouraged Xyza to join Magnum Foundation’s search for their Human rights fellows. nYU and Magnum Foundation asked her to submit documentary images that she has taken as part of the application process. Xyza was then working on a documentary about abuse of migrant workers in Hong Kong, something that she knows happens but people don’t talk about it. she submitted that set of photographs she took documenting the lives of domestic helpers at the Bethune House Migrant women’s refuge, a shelter for abused migrant workers.

The people behind the program liked what they saw and they emailed her, telling her that she was one of the seven fellows for 2015. “i was quite lucky,” she exclaimed. “The whole experience was amazing. i gained a family, i gained friends. i learned a lot about human rights issues and how to tell their stories effectively.

The connections and doors that opened from this program is amazing.”

From enhanced skills on editing and story-telling using multi-media, the program was a god-send to Xyza. it was for her, a year of lessons crammed into six weeks.

Aside from the technical stuff, she learned more about the underreported and unheard human rights and issues in the world.

“we are very lucky to be in the position where we can tell these stories, to be the voices of these people who are unheard,” Xyza said.

Currently, Xyza is working on a Lee O’Brian with girlfriend Pokwang. documentary project about human trafficking victims, another story that is underreported. “i was shocked to learn that in new York, this is happening. we’re in a first world country and this is happening, how much more elsewhere?” she asked. it was also during the nYU program that she was able to meet and work with one of her idols in photography, susan Meiselas. “she’s my superstar, and she became my teacher. i was super excited when i found out that she was part of the nYU program. it was a total fangirl moment when i first saw her. i was excited to go to class every day,” she related.

The mentor’s advice to her? slow down and relax.

But that won’t seem to happen anytime soon. next month, Xyza will be staging an exhibit about domestic workers in Hong Kong, followed by a documentary scholarship in Missouri. Them she’s off to Canada, geneva, Abu Dhabi for various engagements.

“Ang dream ko lang mapauwi ko mommy ko. i want her to go home and be with our family, that’s why i am working so hard. As long as kaya ko na mag-work, tanggap lang ng tanggap ng trabaho. i want her to go home and retire,” she said. in the course of our interview, Xyza mentioned how lucky she is multiple times—from having a boss in Hong Kong who encouraged her to pursue her photography dreams to landing one of seven spots in a highly-competitive scholarship program to all the opportunities that have opened up for her.

Luck may have played a big part in Xyza’s journey so far but without her innate and raw talent in photography, a strong work ethic her parents taught her, and steel-like determination, she is nothing but a twenty something girl armed with a camera.

O’Brian added, “One of the things that we [explore in the show] is the concept of the locals’ thinking that a Filipino man or woman is just going for the benefits rather than actual love in cross-cultural relationships.”

On his romance with Pokwang, he declared, “i think, you know, in my situation… i’ve gone for love.”

WiThOuT so much fanfare, the Philippines this year has been hosting thousands of delegates to the series of Asia-Pacific economic Cooperation (APeC) meetings held in various parts of the country, from Boracay, iloilo, Cebu, to Tagaytay and makati. And we have been doing it with aplomb, creativity and taste—not a showoff of opulence.

The meetings will culminate in November when the heads of state of member nations fly to manila for the 2015 APeC Leaders’ Summit. The last time the country hosted the Apec heads of state was in 1996.

Beginning Sept. 4, Cebu rolls out the hospitality carpet for the APeC delegates. What Cebu has in store should be something to look forward to.

What we have seen so far has been very impressive. it’s been a commendable effort that does the country proud and leaves us—a regular eyewitness to the activities and the setting—impressed with how the organizers have been marshaling Filipino resources and materials ingeniously, tastefully—and always, with a twist or surprising innovation that projects what is uniquely Filipino.

They prove that we can project ourselves on the global stage without resorting to extravagance.

Nothing over the top. indeed, all this has been in keeping with the style of this current administration—not opulent, but a tasteful, dignified projection to the world.

AN athlete gaining so much attention not only because of his popularity in the sport of basketball but also his willingness to promote another sport like football sounds perfect!

That’s why having Ricky Rubio visit manila last week was, for me, heaven sent!

Adidas brought the minnesota Timberwolves guard, who is actually the youngest player to ever play in the Spanish league at the age of 14, for the “Take on manila Tour.” he was all smiles at every stop, including his trip to intramuros and Rizal Park, despite the rains brought about by typhoon ineng. he gamely played with fans, took pictures, and was warmly received by basketballcrazy Filipino fans!

But day two was what i felt as the real highlight. he visited the Gatorade Blue Pitch at The Circuit in makati, where he played some football with local icons Phil and James Younghusband. he showed his football skills that impressed the brothers, while also interacting with other kids on the football field.

Football is a sport, and i have said this, time and time again, that i truly believe we should start to prioritize this because it is more adept towards our physical makeup. We can develop world-

The center of the u-shaped seating was a carpet of sand littered with shells, twigs and arrangements of local orchids. The delegates did serious work in this vacation setting—in the confines of the conference room.

While previous and future country hosts of APeC may have the limitless logistics to produce grandeur, in the case of the Philippines, it is the Filipino design and creative talent that produces the wow factor on the global stage—progressive, dynamic, young talent. On the wings of sham marriages

to immigrate to the United States. One must qualify under either family-based or employment-based categories in order to make that happen. (There are other requirements but now is not the time to discuss them). everyone knows you can’t choose your parents. And if yours don’t have US status, they can’t help you get it. having a child in the United States and waiting 21 years for them to petition for you (and avoiding being deported during that 2 decade – plus wait) seems a bit drastic. Some people willing to take the longer view do choose their career on the basis of how that will help them immigrate but, that, too, is not something that happens immediately. And some may not want to wait.

But marriage to a United States citizen can make a green card happen. When a person who desires to immigrate falls in love with a United States

citizen and the feeling is mutual and they decide to create a life together, the law provides that the citizen can file a petition for the immigrant that will lead to a green card. Some people, however, are not fortunate enough to find someone that they want to share their life with who can also get them legal status. They can then be tempted to enter into marriages solely for the purpose of getting a green card.

These are called sham (fake) marriages. And because it is so tempting to many desperate people, Congress has passed laws and Citizenship & Immigration Services (CIS) has promulgated regulations that make the repercussions Draconian for those who get caught.

And most people in sham marriages do get caught. CIS investigates marriages to determine that they are real. Real does not just mean legal. It means based on a real relation-

Why is improperly cooked pork dangerous?

Poorly cooked or insufficiently barbequed pork (or any meat, for that matter) is dangerous to health, because of the infection, or infestation with parasites, that they can cause.

Improperly cooked pork, for instance, can lead to a parasitic disease known as Trichinosis, caused by a round worm called Trichinella spiralis. The larvae are killed by high temperature.

If the pork is undercooked, the larvae survive, and when ingested, the digestive juices dissolve the cyst capsule and liberate the larvae in the intestine where they grow to maturity, ready to travel and invade the muscles of the eyelids, the heart, and other muscles in the body. This causes pain, fever, profuse sweating, chills, swelling of tissues, hemorrhages in the retina of the eyes, extreme photophobia (sensitivity to light). All these happen after an incubation period of 7 to 14 days, from the time of ingestion. Mortality is less than 5%.

Most patients recover fully with treatment. This disease is 100% preventable, so we do not have any excuse to catch it at all.

How can we live longer?

While waiting for the discovery of the fountain of youth, here are some tips on healthy activities that could add years to your life: abstinence from smoking adds 1.3 years; vegetarian diet (fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grain), 2.4 years; eating nuts five times a

ship. The legal term is “bona fide”. If it determines that the marriage is not bona fide, it will, of course, deny the petition. But the problem does not end there.

The immigrant is placed into Removal Proceedings where he or she faces the very real possibility of being deported.

And a subsequent marriage, or a petition from another family member or employer will not help. That is the truth and the real-

ity. however, unfortunately, the television and movie industry finds sham marriages a source of entertainment. Paying a United States citizen to marry an immigrant for a green card is portrayed as amusing and “no big deal”. Well, it is a crime and an immigration violation so it is a big deal.

The debate over the impact of the media on individual’s actions is ongoing. What impact does what we see have on what we do is still an open question.

But if a desperate person sees someone they admire (even if they see them portraying a fictional character) succeeding in a course of action, they may be tempted to do the same. A currently very popular television serial portrays its main characters as engaging in a sham marriage for immigration purposes. It has resulted in many people asking those in the legal community if they should do the same. So the

We hear stories of the frustration experienced by those who have to re- submit the form many times thinking they are following instructions ‘to the letter” only to have it bounce back as ‘incorrect’. What is so difficult about filling out Form I-864? Looks simple but one too many.

Form I-864 is commonly known as the sponsor’s or petitioner’s “Affidavit of Support” (AOS). Every immigrant entering the US must show that they will never be a ‘public charge’ or a burden to the US government upon becoming a resident of this country and the petitioner/sponsor is supposed to ensure that this does not happen. Failure to comply with the rules will render the applicant ‘inadmissible’ to enter the United States. Form I-864 appears uncomplicated but if one has no or little experience completing forms, it becomes a very complex 9-page document. Government departments involved with immigration strive to simplify the questions, the purpose of which is to determine whether the sponsor complies with the guidelines.

To a layman’s mind, especially in an extended family, choosing a ‘principal sponsor’ is just as difficult as learning why there is a need for a ‘joint sponsor’.

Understanding Form I-864 Immigrant Living: 101 three (3) AOS forms to use?

First, is the basic Form I-864 to be accomplished by the principal sponsor or the petitioner, who is a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident (LPR). The principal sponsor may earn a little or a lot or none at all, but the rules require all petitioners to execute an AOS for a certain beneficiary. For a visa to be issued, the petitioner has to show an annual income of “not less than 125% of the federal poverty line”. Now, what does that mean? To find out, NVC points the applicant to websites such as the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for information. Second, to find out annual income requirement, take a peek into Form I-864P (poverty guidelines) which will somehow provide information.

Unemployment or an income below poverty line does not mean automatic rejection of the immigrant visa application. The rules allow a ‘joint sponsor’ to save the day. Finding a ‘joint sponsor’ with an annual income that is in compliance with the guidelines might not be an easy task. It is comforting to know however that a ‘joint sponsor’ need not be related to the petitioner. These are times when we discover who our real friends are. Maybe one does not need to look that far. Third, if the petitioner has a spouse or child living in the same household and earning income, Form I-864A (Contract Between Sponsor and household Member) can be executed where both incomes are combined to comply with the guidelines.

Oftentimes, NVC requests for evidence because there are

no supporting documents to prove the responses made in the AOS. Every submission of Form I-864 or I-864A must come with four (4) documents, namely, the sponsor’s proof of US citizenship or LPR status, letter of employment, pay stubs and the most recent income tax return with a W2 attached.

Just the latest income tax return (ITR) or the last three (3) years? What should be reported if the sponsor changed jobs and is earning more this year? how do you count the number of dependents already being financially supported then add to that the prospective immigrant? how do you determine whether their income qualifies? Even if the AOS is finally accepted by the NVC, some doubt might linger in an applicant’s mind if indeed the answers are right. In retrospect, it is best to consult with an immigration expert because the odds are always against the visa applicant. If these questions cause the Form I-864 to bounce back, aside from time wasted, it is common knowledge that “the petition dies with the petitioner”; no one wishes that scenario. *** Maria Rita Reyes-Stuby is a licensed attorney in Michigan. FasFos ‘Back To school Backpack Calendar of Events across Drive’ delivered to CCsD on aug. 26 ANOTHER community outreach project had been delivered to this year’s recipient of the FASFOS’ “2015 Back to School Backpack Drive.” The number of new backpacks with a variety of school supplies inside them totaled to 150 pieces. It was a three-month drive and the leadership was able to reach to as many friends and supporters for assistance and aid. The outcome was commendable. FASFOS thanks the officers, members, friends, supporters and donors who helped in the process and made this drive a huge success. Some of the volunteers who participated in the final phase of the project which was the delivery part were Minerva Honkala, Founder/President, Felipe Danglapin, Vice President/Treasurer, Maria Ramirez, a Director of the board, Ellen Stokes, a new member/volunteer, Violeta Horn, Emily Higby, FASFOS Advisers, Johanne Picache, Ohskar Picache and Ohrlan Picache, all of whom are donors and supporters. MANILA—John Arcilla taps into his inner hero when he worked on the film “Heneral Luna.”

Arcilla, who plays the title role in the movie, expressed his belief that people do not have give up their lives just to be considered a hero.

Although this is a historical film, Arcilla explained that it’s not the typical historical film being produced.
