MANILA – US military assistance to the Philippines is expected to increase to $66 million this year. However, it is not tied to the implementation of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, US embassy Press AttachÊ Kurt Hoyer clarified on Friday, Feb. 5.

“That is an increase from the original expectation of $40 million, he said. National labor board rules in favor of fired Fil-Am nurse PASADENA, Calif. — The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) found merit to allegations that two Asian American registered nurses were illegally terminated from Huntington Memorial Hospital in this city. The nurses, Allysha Almada and Vicki Lin, were joined by city officials and community leaders to applaud the labor board’s decision at a press conference on Thursday, Feb. 4. â€œâ€ŚThe first emotion I felt hearing about the NLRB ruling was a state of shock and then it easily turned into elation,â€? Almada, a 28-year-old Filipino-American nurse told the Asian Journal. “It’s an, us versus them, David versus Goliath, kind of situation. Here we are, we’re going up against a large community hospital that has millions of dollars to essentially spend fighting us when that money should be going to patient care. We’ve seen them direct money and funds from patients into fighting organizing efforts. This definitely feels that yes, we were in the right.â€? Almada and Lin, both of whom were working in the intensive care unit, were terminated

Affordable Care Act enrollment grows to 12.7M 425,000 enroll in Covered California

THE White House announced that nearly 13 million Americans have signed up for the Affordable Care Act for 2016, before open enrollment deadline on Jan. 31. The numbers of enrollment for federal insurance marketplaces yielded a modest gain of about 1 million customers for 2016, reported The Washington Post. Sign-ups exceeded the Obama administration’s initial estimates of around 10 million total. During the third open-enrollment season, 9.6 million consumers chose coverage in the 38 states that use the federal marketplace on HealthCare.gov. An additional 3.1 million Americans selected health plans in states that run their own insurance exchanges. “The marketplace is growing and getting stronger and the ACA has become a crucial part of healthcare in America, said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, who announced final results of the

Hoyer said the US is in the process of working with the Philippines on locations and activities for the EDCA implementation. “But no final decisions have been made, he said. “Budget

BIR: Pia Wurtzbach must pay taxes by PRINZ

P. MAGTULIS Philstar.com

MANILA — For Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares, the question of whether or not Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach should pay income taxes is a non-issue because without a law exempting her, the beauty queen has no choice but to pay her taxes. “It should not be an issue because it is in the law, Henares said on Friday, Feb. 5. “It was provided in the law that any tax exemption will have to be approved by two-thirds of the houses of Congress. Without it, there’s no exemption. Hence, Henares said Wurtzbach, just like any other taxpayer, would have until April 15 to pay and settle 9@I :fdd`jj`fe\i B`d ?\eXi\j jX`[ k_Xk D`jj Le`m\ij\ G`X NlikqYXZ_ ZXe her income taxes. Being a congressman and a boxer is OK. Being a senator and boxer may be a little too much. “I do know Manny well, though. He would love to be the senator who defended his title someday. I don’t think this is his last fight for some reason. I just don’t see it because he has a lot left in him. His work ethic is still great. I’d be disappointed if
