PH economy grows 6.5% in 2nd quarter by DANA

MANILA - The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 6.5 percent in the second quarter of 2017, according to the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on Thursday, August 17. While the figure is lower compared to the 7.1 percent growth in the same period last year, it is higher than the 6.4 percent growth in the first quarter of 2017. In a news conference, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary
Ernesto Pernia said the Philippines is “well on track” to meet its full-year target growth of 6.5 to 7.5 percent. “Taking the last quarter’s GDP growth, where the government’s spending performance was lackluster but where the private sector stepped up, and then this quarter’s GDP growth, where government really stepped up but where private sector slackened, just think what could happen if both government and private sectors together exerted that extra effort,” he said.
