with the special circumstance that he allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and tied up Madyson “Maddy” Middleton before killing her, according to Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell. Gonzalez is also accused of lying in wait. The teen has also been charged with one count of kidnapping and four other
sexual assault-related offenses, according to Rosell. If convicted of the charges, Gonzalez may face life in prison. Because of his age, he is not eligible for the death penalty. “We have charged this individual as an adult with the crimes for which he is responsible,” he said. “We are going to bring him to justice.”
At his first court appearance on Thursday, July 30, the 15-year-old did not enter a plea. His arraignment was postponed until Sept. 21, most likely to give the defense more time to build a case, said Santa Cruz District Attorney spokesman Paul Mangasarian. Gonzalez’s lawyer Larry Biggam told

FBI joins hunt for Fil-Am murder suspect
OLONGAPO CITY – The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined the hunt for the Filipino-American tagged as the primary suspect in the killing of a 23-year-old woman here last week. Mayor Rolen Paulino said the warrant of arrest issued by a Zambales court for Jonathan Dewayne Ciocon Viane, 29, for the murder of Karie Ces “Aika” Mojica was transmitted to the FBI attaché at the United States Embassy in Manila. Viane, however, would not be brought back to the Philippines, if arrested, Paulino said. “He will be jailed in the US. [The Philippines cannot apply for extradition] because he is a US citizen,” Paulino told the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Thursday, July 30. Viane, and a second suspect, Niño de la

Binay: Roxas’ endorsement will highlight our difference
CITY OF IMUS, Cavite – Vice President Jejomar Binay said the official proclamation of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas as the standard bearer of the administration’s Liberal Party will only “highlight” their difference in terms of experience, governance, and public service. The LP proclamation also put an end to the party’s “pahele-hele” (playing coy) and drama about Roxas’ candidacy, Binay told reporters here. Binay was in this city on Friday, July 31 while President Aquino made the announcement of Roxas’ official endorsement at the historic Club Filipino. From here, Binay is scheduled to visit Dasmariñas City and later the town of Silang to meet with village officials to discuss “barangay anti-disaster programs.” (Inquirer.net)

MANILA – The Philippines’ limited territorial defense capabilities were evident in a recently released Japanese defense ministry document detailing the military assets of claimants in the South China Sea. The document dated July 28 noted that there is “a vast gap both in the quality and quantity of navy and air force capabilities” between China and the main coastal states in South China Sea, namely the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. According to the document, the Philippines has 80 warships but no submarines.
