THE U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week issued a new order temporarily halting evictions in areas of the country with high levels of COVID19 transmission. The extension of the order, which was signed on Tuesday, August 3, is an effort to give relief to renters who may be unable to make rent or housing payments in counties experiencing “substantial” or “high” levels of the virus, particularly amid the Delta variant. “The emergence of the Delta variant has led to a rapid acceleration of community transmission in the United States, putting more Americans at increased risk, especially if they are unvaccinated,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement. “This moratorium is the right thing to do to keep people in their homes and out of congregate settings where COVID19 spreads.” The moratorium will be in place until October 3 to help facilitate self-isolation

Biden and Harris’s meeting with community leaders — which some AAPI Democrats believe is overdue given the rise in anti-Asian discrimination that began last year — covered a wide variety of topics from economic equity to immigration reform. In his opening remarks, Biden addressed the ninth anniversary of the shooting at a Sikh temple

Health experts: COVID vaccines still win in race against Delta variant A PANEL of public health experts July 30 debated the efficacy of COVID vaccines against the dominant Delta variant, concluding that — though the vaccines are 80 to 90% effective against hospitalizations and deaths — they are less effectual in containing the spread of the potent mutant strain. Speakers at the news briefing, organized by Ethnic Media Services, included Drs. Monica Gandhi, Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco’s School of Medicine; Tiffani Jenae Johnson, of the UC Davis Health Children’s Hospital; Ben Neuman, chief virologist at the Global Health Research Complex at Texas A&M University; and Dali Fan of UC Davis Health. The experts spoke amid a rise of new infections from the Delta variant, and a new report from the Centers for Disease Control which showed a rise in breakthrough infections – people who were fully vaccinated, but still had a symptomatic infection. Breakthrough infections in fully-vaccinated people are on the rise. A CDC internal memo that was first obtained by The Washington Post last week, reported that an estimated 32,000

THE Philippines’ sinigang has been hailed as the best rated vegetable soup in the world by international food database Taste Atlas. In Taste Atlas’ website, sinigang has a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. The beloved Filipino dish was followed by skabenu zupa from Latvia, fagiolata from Italy, and ogbono soup from Nigeria with 4.7 stars each. Sinigang was described as a sour soup consisting of sampalok (fruit of the tamarind tree), water spinach, green pepper, cabbage,

broccoli, eggplant, diced tomatoes, sliced onions, ginger, green beans, water, oil, and salt. “Sinigang is traditionally served hot and steaming as a main dish, with rice as its accompaniment. It is an often seen dish at special occasions such as birthdays or weddings, and over time, as the dish became more popular, there were new variations that used guava or raw mango instead of sampalok and each region developed their own version of the popular soup,” wrote Taste Atlas. “With its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country, sinigang
