INTRODUCTION 簡介
ASIAN FILM AWARDS 亞洲電影大獎 Inaugurated in 2007, the Asian Film Awards celebrates excellence in Asian cinema through the annual presentation of awards to talents and films that make up the dynamic film industries of Asia. Awards night is a spectacular gathering of stars, celebrities, industry professionals and the media that highlights and publicizes the year’s achievements in Asian movies. Presented in Hong Kong in its first seven years, the Awards moved to one
of Asia’s fastest growing entertainment hubs, Macau, in 2014 – one step closer to its long-term plan of being held in different Asian cities to reflect its broad reach across the entire region.
亞洲電影大獎在香港舉行了首七屆頒獎 典禮，2014年移師至亞洲娛樂樞紐澳 門，並計劃在未來繼續巡迴到亞洲不同 地區舉行，彰顯大獎在區內的廣泛代表 性。
一年一度的亞洲電影大獎於2007年創 辦，旨在表揚傑出的亞洲電影作品和人 才，並展示亞洲電影界的多元文化和活 力。頒獎典禮當晚，區內電影界台前幕 後的精英聚首一堂，共同嘉獎該年度成 績卓越的電影作品和電影工作者，吸引 世界各地媒體出席及報導當晚盛況。
ASIAN FILM AWARDS ACADEMY 亞洲電影大獎學院 In 2013, three main Asian film festivals - Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo joined together to create the non-profit organization, the Asian Film Awards Academy, to promote and develop Asian cinema and its talents. The AFA Academy highlights, strengthens and develops Asian film industry and culture through the annual Asian Film Awards, and several year-round initiatives including strategies for building regional and international audiences. Members of the AFA Academy are drawn from all past nominees and winners of the Asian Film Awards. Members vote for the Asian Film Awards and also participate in various AFA Academy activities involving film professionals and audiences in Asia and around the world. In 2015, the AFA Academy launched
events and activities including the Masterclass Series, Journey to the Fest, Asian Cinerama and Young Film Professionals Program to promote, educate, inform and develop knowledge, skills and interest in Asian cinema among the industry, students and audiences in Asia and beyond. The AFA Academy expresses the increasing global importance and creative strengths of Asian films and aims to unite the industries and talents of the fast-growing region. 亞洲電影大獎學院於2013年由亞洲三大 國際電影節，即香港、釜山及東京國際 電影節共同創立，學院的宗旨是推廣及 促進亞洲電影、培育區內電影人才、以 及拓展電影觀眾群。學院藉著舉辦一年 一度的亞洲電影大獎及全年多元化的各 類活動，從而凸顯、加強及建立越趨蓬 勃的亞洲電影業及其多變的電影文化。

Welcome to the 10th Asian Film Awards organized by the Asian Film Awards Academy. The Academy has been established for more than two years now. In addition to the annual Awards to honor outstanding Asian filmmakers and their work, we have also undertaken year-round initiatives to develop and promote Asian cinema around the region and the world. These include a series of masterclasses, film roadshows and student visits to various international film festivals in the UK, Russia, Japan, Korea, Cambodia and others. We are particularly thankful for the support of our founding organizations, Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo International Film Festivals, for their efforts and help. We are also grateful to Create Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Film Development Council, and our various overseas partners. Thanks to them, we have been able to carry out our mission as an advocate for Asian films around the world. Our 10th Asian Film Awards show commemorates this first decade where we have made many friends, built networks, and recognized excellence and talents in Asian cinema. This year, we introduce a new award in the category of Best Sound. Skillful recording, editing and mixing of sound are often unnoticed but are critical in great filmmaking. We are happy to make this award not only to recognize excellence in the field but also to encourage talents. We are honored to have Dr. Johnnie To Kei-fung as our Jury President this year. Dr. To is an internationally acclaimed director and producer from Hong Kong. He is also one of the most prolific and versatile filmmakers in the world. On top of receiving awards and nominations from prestigious film festivals, including Venice, Cannes and Berlin, he has also served on the juries of Cannes and Venice.
I would also like to thank our two Celebrity Jurors, mainland Chinese actress Ms. Gao Yuanyuan and Hong Kong actor Mr. Sean Lau Ching-wan. In their very successful careers, these two important screen icons of the Asian film world have worked with world-class directors and made indelible impressions on film fans worldwide. Dr. To, Ms. Gao and Mr. Lau will join our other 12 respected jurors to participate in the important task of picking the best Asian works this year. I would like to thank our Jury Members, Nominations Committee and Advisors, submissions organizations and industry executives and representatives for their contribution to the Awards. We would like to express our sincere and special thanks to the Sands Board and the staff of The Venetian Macao for supporting the event on their impressive and well-appointed property. I wish to give our special thanks to our principal supporter Macao Foundation; prime supporter Macao Government Tourism Office; co-organizer the Macau Artistes Association; diamond supporter Suncity Group, gold supporters MBL and Macau Group and our official cultural partner Taipa Village Cultural Association. This year, the Asian Film Awards is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It is a great honor for us as this is the third time for the Awards ceremony to be held in Macau. The entertainment industry of Macau has been developing rapidly in recent years, nurturing a large group of talents that start to make their appearance and give Asia a fresh face. Under the policy of the Macau SAR Government, which strongly supports and reinforces cultural and creative businesses, the related systems and environment have also become more mature. TAIPA VILLAGE MACAU BACKGROUND 氹仔舊城區背景
Taipa village, home to the Portuguese architecture, is the historical part of Taipa and the best preserved area in the south of the island. It seeks to be the new landmark in Macau – a dynamic leisure destination infused with niche shopping, innovative dining, diversified entertainments and heritage attractions. The cultural-blended destination defines an opulent mixture of heritage and modernity, where east meets west. It is a living village with real-life stories to tell – a place where people live and work, redefining the memories of the local residents who have witnessed the changes of the island over these decades. Visitors can taste a sumptuous selection of authentic cuisines, from local Chinese delights to continental flair infused with Portuguese and Spanish flavors. While being away from the glitz and vibrancy of the casinos resorts along Cotai strip, Taipa Village is only walking distance from the resorts which make traveling very accessible.

Taipa village is the historical part of Taipa and the best preserved area in the south of the island. It used to be a fisherman village in Taipa catered for local residents who made a living through fishing, firecrackers production and other handicraft professions. Initially a small island settlement, Taipa Village witnessed, over the last half century, a dramatic change in its geography with land reclamations around for the formation of the Cotai strip. It is a living village with a substantial number of stories and histories to tell – redefining the memories of the local residents who have witnessed the changes of the island over the past decades, from rural to urban development with the growth of economy. After decades of economic and urban growth, Taipa Village is now a trendsetting attraction surrounded by public and private housing, new town, restaurants, shops, cultural heritage and the splendid integrated destination resorts along Cotai Strip.

Yuen Wo-ping has distinguished himself as the premier action choreographerdirector in the world. With a career in Greater China and Hollywood, Yuen has choreographed over 60 films and directed nearly 30 films with screen icons including Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow, Bruce Lee, Ang Lee, Jet Li, Quentin Tarantino, Tsui Hark, the Wachowskis, Wong Kar-wai, Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Yuen’s father is famed actor Yuen Siutin, who trained his son in Peking opera and introduced him to producers of a long-running film series of Wong Feihung, a Chinese folk hero, which gave Yuen Wo-ping work during the 1960s. As martial arts films gained popularity in the early 1970s, the young Yuen joined Shaw Brothers and played small parts and stuntman. In 1971, Yuen first became action director in Mad Killer directed by producer Ng See-yuen, who went on to produce Yuen’s directorial action debut Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow in 1978, starring then relatively unknown Jackie Chan. It was the trio’s next action comedy Drunken Master in 1978 that brought Yuen and Chan mainstream recognition. The success of the films also set a new trend of Hong Kong action comedy that would heavily influence international cinema and become history. In 1979, Yuen founded Peace Films Company and made films such as The Buddhist Fist (1980), The Miracle Fighters (1982) and Wing Chun (1994). In his film Drunken Tai Chi (1984), Yuen cast his protégé Donnie Yen for the first time. Yen went on to become a leading man and an international action director. In the early 1990s, Yuen collaborated with director Tsui Hark to revive the classic martial arts genre, exemplified by Once Upon a Time in China II (1991). During those years, Yuen redefined Hong Kong action with increasingly elaborate fights by employing wires and imaginative choreography that more closely resembled Peking opera. Iron Monkey (1993) stands as perhaps his best film from this era that shows his kinetically fluid style of action. By the late 1990s, Yuen had already gained international cult status among genre fans and filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino. He was invited by the Wachowskis to mastermind the action choreography of The Matrix (1999), which became a tremendous success. Further Hollywood engagements followed such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee, 2000), Kill
Bill: Volume 1 & 2 (Tarantino, 2003 and 2004) and The Forbidden Kingdom (Rob Minkoff, 2008), as well as a collaboration with director Wong Kar-wai on The Grandmaster (2013). Throughout his career, Master Yuen Wo-ping has pushed the boundaries of action cinema by effectively showing what even actors not trained in martial arts can achieve. Kiki Kirin is one of the most revered Japanese actresses in the world. In the mid-60s, she made a name for herself by playing eccentric comic characters on television. Her natural and versatile acting ability has since left unforgettable impressions. Over her more than 50 year career with over a hundred credits to date, she has worked with some venerable names of Japanese cinema, and her candid public persona has won the hearts of many.
playing in the director’s I Wish (2011), Like Father Like Son (2013), Our Little Sister (2015) and the forthcoming After the Storm (2016). This year, she is again nominated for Best Actress of the Japan Academy Prize, for her mesmerizing performance in Kawase Naomi’s Un Certain Regard Opening Film at Cannes, An (2015), playing an ostracized leper who teaches an ex-con man the delicate art of making anko (sweet red bean paste).
Kiki started acting in high school and joined one of the most prestigious theater troupes Bungakuza in the 60s. Later, she gained popular success for the TV comedy series It’s About Time (1970 – ) and The Family of Terauchi Kantaro (1974 – ), in which she played elderly roles even though she was only in her thirties. In 1977, she changed her stage name to Kiki Kirin.
Kiki has also received the highest honors, including the Yamaji Fumiko Actress Award, Arigato Award from the Tokyo International Film Festival and from the Emperor of Japan - a Medal with Purple Ribbon and an Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
From the 80s to 90s, Kiki worked with film masters such as Suzuki Seijun (Zigeunerweisen, 1980, Pistol Opera, 2001), Shinoda Masahiro (The Ballad of Orin, 1977), Okamoto Kihachi (Rainbow Kids, 1991), Ichikawa Kon (Crane, 1988), Obayashi Nobuhiko (I Are You, You Am Me, 1982, Sabishinbo, 1985) and Imai Tadashi (War and Youth, 1991). In the 2000s, Kiki was awarded regularly at the Japan Academy Prize and began her rise to international prominence. Kiki is a two-time Best Actress winner at the Japanese Academy Prize for Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad (Matsuoka Joji, 2007) and Chronicle of My Mother (Harada Masato, 2012), and has also won the Prize’s Best Supporting Actress for Villain (Lee Sangil, 2010). She has worked several times with Kore-eda Hirokazu, winning Best Actress for Still Walking (2008) at the Nantes Three Continents Festival, and

This 3D fantasy comedy set in a world of humans and monsters is a skillful mix of live action and animation directed by Hong Kong-born Raman Hui who made his reputation in Hollywood with the Shrek franchise for DreamWorks Animation. The film is produced by Bill Kong, who has scored many successes globally with films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), and renowned film production and costume designer Yee Chung-man. Hui has said that the message of his tale of war and love between humans and monsters is “to understand differences, to see the world through others’ eyes and to foster more understanding between people and groups,” a theme of acceptance that was welcomed at the box office. To celebrate its 10th year, the Asian Film Awards has established an award to recognize film talents who have helped spotlight its host city. Macau, with its mix of east and west, and contrast of old and new worlds, has provided the backdrop and setting for many films over the years. Major productions have included films from the James Bond and Indiana Jones franchises; icons such as Rowan Atkinson, Madonna, Sean Penn and Orson Welles; European productions from Portugal and Switzerland with filmmakers like Paulo Rocha and Clemens Klopfenstein. Hong Kong filmmakers have also been shooting in Macau from early last century. In our era Macau has featured in works by major directors such as Johnnie To, Sammo Hung, Andrew Lau, Pang Ho-cheung, Wong Jing and Wong Kar-wai. The first recipient to be honored with the AFA Academy’s Outstanding Contribution Award is filmmaker Professor Li Qiankuan, whose film The Star and the Sea (2011), a biopic on the early years of legendary Chinese composer-pianist Xian Xinghai, was made in Macau. Professor Li is a veteran of the Chinese film industry and has made over 20 films. His directorial credits include The Birth of New China (1989), After the Final Battle (1991), The Chongging Negotiations (1993) and The Lu Gou Qiao Incident (1995) amongst many others. The Birth of New China represented China to participate in the 62nd Oscars and broke the Chinese box office. He is Honorary
Chairman of the China Film Association, Advisor of the China Film Foundation, Honorary Chairman of the Jilin Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Honorary Committee Member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. He is also a researcher of China’s Central Research Institute of Culture and History. Li has received many prestigious awards for his films, including Best Film, Best Director and others from the Golden Rooster Awards, Outstanding Film for six times from the Huabiao Film Awards, Hundred Flowers Awards for three times, Five-One Project Awards for five times, Golden Deer Award Best Film from the Changchun Film Festival, Best Film, Best Director and others from Shanghai’s Yongle Awards and Anti-Fascist Great Wall Cup Outstanding Film. He was a main force to transform the Beijing Film Festival into an international event, and was also one of the originators of the Asian Film Awards, the China National Film Museum and the CCTV Movie Channel.
