Motorsports Motorsports Column Column >> >> The Underdog Story

Speaking of underdogs, let’s take a small detour to Russia where the FIFA World Cup, 2018 is in progress. What an amazing couple of weeks of world cup we have had!!! With majority of the big guns failing to fire, the underdogs have seized the opportunity to the maximum, both Argentina and Brazil failing to register a win in their opening game with the latter getting knocked out of the tournament, and the Germans facing an embarrassing group stage exit. Many fans have even begun to name it as the ‘World Cup of Upsets’. Coming back to the world of motorsport we have 4 glamorous and thrilling races lined up in the month of July with Lewis Hamilton leading the drivers’ Championship which happens to be a cumulative of all the points won by the drivers over the entire race season and Sebastian Vettel right on his tail. A decade ago Sebastian Vettel aged just 21 years; raced on to his first podium finish and the rest as they say is history. Driving for Toro Rosso, Vettel started on pole breezing past Championship contenders Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa in the qualifiers. Heavy rain prior to the race meant that all cars used extreme wet-weather tyres. The race began with a safety car as Sebastian Bourdaid stalled on the grid. After the second lap the safety car pulled into the pit-lane Vettel opened up a lead of two seconds over Kovalainen straight after; the McLaren experiencing visibility problems by virtue of the spray off the back of the Toro Rosso. Vettel made his first stop in the 18th lap, by the end of which he had built a lead of 12 seconds over his counterparts. A momentary lapse saw him slip to 4th but pit stops from each of his rivals, Kovalainen, Mark Webber and Felipe Massa meant that he regained his lead. Vettel clung on to his lead to finish off a remarkable race.

For the Love of Racing

Sports, the culmination of talent, hard work and dedication on a single stage. A visual treat, it transcends all boundaries and differences. It brings together all walks of life, where everyone shares a common platform. The wondrous world of motor-sports is no different, with teams and individuals from all nations, creeds religion, etc working together to achieve excellence. It's no wonder why we as Indians love the sport so dearly. The other main aspect, which draws many a fan amongst us towards motor-sports are the vehicles themselves. We can never get enough of it. The roar of their engines, their elegant design and high precision performance have captivated our attention. Probably the most exciting feature of the sport for us would be the bitter rivalries which dominate the track. Be it the current Vettel, Hamilton rivalry or the one involving Nikki Lauda and James Hunt, it made for more than just a good watch (on or off the track). We never waste a single moment in discussing who would get the better of the other, or who held the upper hand in an upcoming race, the fight for dominance reigned supreme. www.ashwaracing.com | July Newsletter

ALUMNUS OF THE MONTH

Ayush Pandey, fondly known as Pandeyji, led the Chassis subsystem for the 2016 race season, was part of the first hybrid team which set it's benchmarks for the teams to come. The 2016 race season was a milestone in the history of Ashwa, where the combustion timelines were re-instated. This was indeed a difficult phase wherein the team was challenged to get the car on wheels in a short span of 5 months and Ayush played a pivotal role in the same. Today, if we are able to get our timelines right, Ayush is a major inspiration and reason for it. One particular memory of his time, which Pandeyji’s juniors miss, is his iconic ''Flying Chappal". Should you make any mistake, his footwear would come to you at rocket speed, even before you get an opportunity to blink your eyelids, sometimes even faster than the race car!

ALUMNUS OF THE MONTH Jokes apart, he is the best mentor one could possibly have. His skills and passion in teaching juniors about the technicalities of chassis and vehicle dynamics is what sets Ayush apart from the others. Till date, if we see any tool out of its place it reminds us of him. Not because he was heading chassis, rather because he never placed the tools back in place, which is quite ironic because, he belonged to the chassis and workshop management team which is supposed to ensure orderliness in the workshop. Having let out these secrets, the writer and editor of this version of the newsletter might soon be the next target for Ayush’s "footwear boomerang", when he visits the workshop next time! Ayush’s juniors miss and fondly recall their trips to the market with him, for they had an opportunity to interact closely and bond with him on a friendly, personal level. Being in the chassis subsystem never stopped him from doing any other work. He worked on Engine, Brakes, suspension, and also played an instrumental role in the re-wiring the combustion prototype. He was also the driver of X6 - combustion prototype. He cared for the car like it was his own baby, but that didn't stop him from releasing his foot from the throttle and taking the car through the roads and bumps in the college. His presence in the workshop created a very positive atmosphere for the team to work in. He still takes out time to meet the team and help them to the best of his abilities. On an ending note, here’s a small message from Ayush’s immediate juniors: “Pandey bhaiya we miss you loads, we remember our chassis welding sessions with you, and then breaking the components during testing. After all, you were our soul motivation for us to work on newer and better aspects of chassis structure.” Thank you Ayush, for making us do what we never knew we could and for shaping our cars towards a better engineered vehicle.
