15 YEARS OF ASHWA

Ashwa Racing started out as a vision and has turned into legacy. It was started by a few mechanical engineering students, who came up with the idea of Formula student in India and since then, it has gone on to establish itself as a student initiative in the arena of Motorsport Engineering education, producing prototypes year after year, participating in various FSAE events.

Ashwa Racing rolled out its first ever prototype in the year 2005, becoming the only team to represent India in FSAE Australasia. During the course of the event, the team also set a FSAE record in ‘Cost Report’ event, bagging their first of the many more accolades www.ashwaracing.com December Newsletter

to come. Over the years, Ashwa Racing has had the backing of strong Alumni Committee, our faculty advisor Dr. RS Kulkarni sir, our founding member Mr. Arunraj Subbaraj as well as all our sponsors. They have been the backbone of the team, guiding us through each and every step and streamlining our efforts in the right direction. Despite their busy schedules they have ensured that they allot more and more time for us, inspiring and motivating us to reach greater heights.

diversification of the team into fully electric prototypes, becoming the only Indian team to fabricate three different prototypes in a year.

In the near future Ashwa Racing aims to move into solutions for mass mobility coming up with a usercentric autonomous prototype and guidelines of hyperloop concept, with the work on the former having already begun and looks forward to roll out its first passenger electric vehicle in 2019.

THE JOURNEY

Since 2003, mutually beneficial partnerships have played a crucial role in Ashwa Racing’s success over the years. They have not only helped the team achieve greater heights, but have also nursed the all-round development of individual members of the team. One such organization is Sansera Engineering. Sansera Engineering Limited manufactures and supplies precision forged and machined components for original equipment manufacturers in India and internationally. As the team diversified into various projects, in addition to financial support, they have aided in the manufacturing of components for all our prototypes, which are essential for the assembly of the car. This has greatly helped the team during the manufacturing and assembly phases. Interaction with the company professionals has not only given us a better understanding of our vehicle dynamics, but also the manufacturing process that goes into it. Over the years, they have identified our potential, constantly pushed us to exceed our limits, organizing motivational talks and team building exercises.

As the team progressed over the years, Ashwa Racing’s relationship with Sansera Engineering changed from that of sponsorship into one that facilitated learning. They have helped us broaden our horizons as engineers and as individuals, organizing industrial visits for the team giving the students the opportunity to learn about the company’s manufacturing operations and management. Ashwa Racing has been fortuitous to have witnessed product seminars organized by the company in college, enabling the students to familiarize themselves with the current industry trends and technologies. ALUMNUS OF THE MONTH

Born on same day as the great minds Ratan Tata and Dhirubhai Ambani , we have one of our greatest project managers of Ashwa Racing, Sohan Shetty. This person can easily be introduced as one of the most meticulous and hard-working person Ashwa Racing has ever seen.

Sohan J. Shetty, the project manager of RZX6-H and RZX7-C, popularly known as ‘Shetty’ was part of the Suspension and Administration subsystem. The title of the subsystem he belonged to was strictly for the record. In actuality, there isn’t a subsystem that Shetty hasn’t put his hands in. He knew the car on the back of his hand and always had effective solutions in times of need.

Shetty is one of the kindest guys one will ever come across and at the same time, a firm leader. He struck the perfect balance between him being a cool, chill guy and the ideal Project Manager. This perfect balance 11 December Newsletter www.ashwaracing.com

was not just within Ashwa, he also had a 9+ GPA and his studies barely took a hit, even though he spent his time mostly in the workshop.

He has been the backbone of X7. He was a motivation to all him teammates, his level of commitment was unparalleled, seeing him give his 200% made all his teammates strive towards giving 100% at the very least.

Shetty's ability to plan and execute was commendable.

He did it with such ease that he made project management look like child's play. His batchmates barely remember days when he went and slept on a bed, he mostly worked late in the night and slept in the workshop. One rarely gets to see people with such dedication. He is extremely helpful and approachable, to his juniors and well as seniors.

Shetty was an exceptional project manager and he was proficient in this technical work as well. He was the go to person for all the conundrums his team encountered and he would always have a solution or at least a smart way to reach the solution. Shetty is the go-to person for people from every batch that's worked under him. Be it approving Project Management Presentation documents or even proofreading monthly newsletter articles! His seniors fondly say "There was nothing that Shetty didn't help us with. He was all over the place!".

Shetty’s batchmates, in addition to being great comrades were also among his closest friends and they genuinely appreciate the time and effort he’s invested www.ashwaracing.com

in the project. They have seen him struggle for the team, but he never made it evident. He lead the team from the front, would always push his team to strive harder and in some cases, he would save the day. He made sure that the team reached the finish line, be it on the race track or even simply executing everyday tasks.

After a point, words can do no more justice to how amazing a character Shetty truly is. His following quote pretty much sums up everything about him.

"In everything you do, if you want to earn the respect of your men, you have to work harder than them. You have to stretch yourself more than them. Do not spare your men but more importantly do not spare yourself".

He is presently working in ITC. And it is a no-brainer that he is missed immensely in the workshop these days and that all members love him and wish him well.
