TOUCHDOWN: THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
On 22 May 2018, the X8H team headed out enthusiastically, to Kempegowda International Airport to commence their journey to the United States for the most awaited event of this race season, Formula Hybrid 2018. They landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, 22 hours later, after a tiring journey via Kuwait and Ireland. Just as they arrived, despite the jet lag and fatigue, 25 thrilled students stepped out, onto the streets of New York, exploring various restaurants, parks and museums and embracing the electrifying vibe of the city. They then travelled to Boston, from where they took a bus to our final destination: Plymouth, New Hampshire. The team is currently being hosted by Mr. Michael Drew, who has previously hosted our X7H team as well. The car has arrived at New Hampshire Motorway and the team has already started to work on its final assembly, before the event. The event commenced on 29th April, Day 0. It is a four day event that would go on until 4th May, 2018. Our best wishes to the X8H team and we hope to see them return as the best hybrid team, worldwide. After 7 months of rigorous training and several rounds of technical and HR interviews, our Freshers have now been allotted their technical subsystems. They have been segregated into these subsystems based on technical expertise in their respective fields of interest and of course, their inclination towards it. Every technical system is integrated with a complementary managerial role. For instance, the Steering subsystem is also involved in handling the Financials while members of the Brakes subsystem look after logistics. Apart from the technical subsystems, we also have an SMP team (Sponsorship, Marketing and PR) that works alongside the technical subsystems, whose essential duty is to raise funds for the project and establish stable & everlasting partnerships between the team and partner companies. The major motive behind allocating subsystems is to tap the potential of each student differently. It is done to bring out the best technical skills one has, regarding any particular subsystem. The managerial role associated with ensures that there is an overall growth of the members as they grow through their 4 years in the project. The freshers have begun interacting with the seniors from their respective subsystems, so as to get trained and gain sufficient knowledge and skill to be able to build their very own racecar prototype in the upcoming year.

This Month That Year
The world of motor sports has reached a pinnacle under the Formula One, however little do people know that it all started one fine day in May, 1950. This however, was first of many races to come, but the real foundation work began with the FĂŠdĂŠration Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA) standardization of rules in 1946. It's evolution over the years has mirrored the technological advancements in various fields. The three versions or international Formulae were based on engine capacity size initially. Another interesting point to note was that most of these cars were manufactured by a single Italian company, Alfa Romeo. During the initial stages of the Formula One, the race world was dominated by the big boys of the industry, namely Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Maserati. What may surprise many was that many private teams also participated(however only for local races). An indicator as to how much the world had changed during the two World Wars, Alfa Romeo, a state run company won almost all pre-1951 races with their pre-war Alfetta. Mercedes had entered the Formula scene only after new regulations were introduced in 1954 and dominated the spotlight for two seasons before vanishing completely from the F1 scene for over 40 years. In the 1960's, for the first time ever a points system came into place apart from a few minor changes to the rules. Unrestricted sponsorship came into effect only from the late 1960's. The other major introduction were the use of wings and wing-profiled sidepod's sealed to the ground, greatly improving the performance. From an engine's perspective, the evolution ranged from engine capacity to how they were aspirated, giving us a wide range of engines from the iconic supercharged engine, to the turbo charged, to the current hybrid ones. All in all, it's rich history has seen iconic drivers, epic rivalries and innovative technologies from various teams take the stage to make it the most watched and most loved motorsport this era.

The Underdog Story
With Valtteri Bottas being dubbed as the underdog for 2018 championship, we take a look at one of the greatest underdog stories in Formula1 in this month’s edition. We roll almost 4 decades back to the 1981 Spanish Grand Prix. Gilles Villeneuve ran the race of his life with an uncompetitive Ferrari. Lafitte had qualified on pole followed by Alan Jones and Reutemann, while Villeneuve was seventh on the grid. With Villeneuve’s Ferrari only competitive for the initial few laps, he decided to pass as many cars as possible in these few laps. Jones and Reutemann took the lead as Laffite’s engine bogged down, with Villeneuve behind the two. By the end of the first lap Villeneuve had taken the second place, taking the lead by lap 14 due to Jones crashing and retiring out. Reutemann later fall behind Laffite. Villeneuve tried to extend his lead at the straights as his car was competitive there, but his advantage was in vain as his rivals closed the gap there. At the end, 5 cars remained nose-to-tail with Villeneuve clinching the race by just 0.22 seconds from Laffite. However not many had known that this would be his last win, the following season he died on May 8th in a crash qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. Anush Chakravarthy, the first name which strikes our minds when we think of driver training sessions and testing the car. Worn out slicks and broken drive shafts are a part of his morning breakfast. He's the 2015 batch alumnus who chased his dream of attending the GT Academy has always helped us with everything possible, from providing his racing gears to training us for the required track conditions. He is one of the most experienced drivers a team can have. He has also been the brains behind our very first 3D printed air intake system for engine. His positive approach towards innovative ideas are commendable and he helps the team overcome every hiccup in that process. His brilliance in analysing the testing data and tuning the setup to match performance of international standards has greatly helped the team in fine tuning the timings. Apart from sharing technical knowledge with the team, he was also the heart of Sponsorship Team for the 2015 Race Season. His way of interaction and taking forward the discussion in a meeting is something we always look upto.
