THANK YOU... A community in north Honduras called La Confianza was the home of this year’s Lenten campaign. A corrupt businessman wants to evict its 519 families from a piece of land. To do this his private army is burning homes and committing murder. This land will add little to his wealth. Yet it’s La Confianza’s only chance for a better future. These families’ struggle and determination represent the heart of Trócaire’s work. With your support, the people of La Confianza are seeking a dignified life that's free from poverty and fear. Carmen Amador told us: “We love our land for a very important reason. It’s the only thing that will take our children from poverty.” Thanks to you we’re convinced that the people of La Confianza will achieve
their aims. Until this day comes, your support means that their plight will not be forgotten. So far Trócaire has helped 62,000 families in Honduras get legal titles to land. This has been achieved because of the support we so generously receive from Irish people, parishes and clergy during Lent each year. The people of La Confianza face grave danger, but they know that you are encouraging them to keep their strength as they overcome the greatest of hurdles. Thank you.

chickens bring health and hope
Emily Otieno, Kenya When Emily was diagnosed with HIV in 2002 she was weak and in bad health, struggling to look after her family. “When I got my chickens I didn’t have a good diet. Then they started laying eggs and I started breeding them. I’m really, really thankful for what Global Gift did for me. My children are happy and healthy.” When her health improved Emily decided to help others. Today Emily’s group provides food and education for over 1,000 orphans. BATTLINg THE WORST FLOODS IN PAKISTAN’S HISTORY One year after floods devastated Pakistan, Trócaire is using €8m/£7m in donations from Ireland to help people recover in the long-term. Farmland, irrigation systems and fishing boats for 126,000 people will be rehabilitated and agricultural materials including seeds and fertiliser will be distributed. Trócaire is also rebuilding water pumps and walkways. During the floods Trócaire's partners rescued 20,000 people and provided food, cooking utensils, bedding and tents to 135,000 people. Mohammad Tahib Shoro’s family was rescued from Khanpur village, Sindh province: “If it wasn’t for Trocaire’s support I may not have been able to rescue all my children, never mind some of my possessions,” he said. emerGeNCY resPONse iN aCTiON » In 2010, Trócaire responded to humanitarian crises in 13 countries » In Haiti and Pakistan, we provided life-sustaining relief to 250,000 people » In Somalia, we helped 211,871 people affected by conflict to access healthcare

Steve Wickham learns traditional African instrument, the Kalimba.
Trad musicians across the country raised the roof in September during the inaugural ‘Trad for Trócaire’ week. And the music hasn’t stopped since. Some 400 local trad events have been held nationwide in what’s surely the biggest session Ireland has seen. What’s more, talented musicians and trad fans have raised over €150,000 /£132,660 to date. This celebration of Irish music is run by Trócaire in association with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Waterboys member, Steve Wickham, travelled to Uganda in March with musicians from Comhaltas to see how trad musicians are changing lives. They met women forced into camps during the war after their husbands were killed. Now that they have returned to their villages, local organisations funded by Trócaire are helping them secure land to farm and rebuild their skills and income. The group brought their instruments and held an outdoor seisúin, Uganda style.

Jaime Ruiz (14), Nicaragua.
jAIME RUIZ,
who appeared on the 2006 Trócaire box, goes to school “I want to thank the people of Ireland for their help.” Jaime Ruiz, Nicaragua It's five years since the people of Ireland were told the story of Jaime Ruiz on the Trócaire box. Over a million people read about his life on a Nicaraguan coffee plantation; one of long days of backbreaking work. His lack of education was determined by poverty and his parents’ need for an extra pair of hands to earn. Thanks to donations from Ireland Jaime is now attending school every day. Trócaire's local partner worked with his parents to help them understand the value of education. “Parents here didn’t know how important it is to send children to school because they had never been themselves,” explained Zoila Romero of Trócaire, Nicaragua. Now Jaime's mother dreams that he will “progress in his studies so he might have a better future.” To see videos of Jaime and other people you have helped through your Trócaire box visit youtube.com/trocaire.

speak out against injustice in Palestine
“I have lots of regrets,” says Mikhael Manekin, walking through the streets of Hebron, where 170,000 Palestinians live in subjugation to 1,000 Jewish settlers who are protected by the Israeli army. Mikhael is a former Israeli lieutenant who once had a “genuine fear” of every Palestinian he saw. But the stark inequality of life for Palestinians changed his perspective. “Living conditions for Palestinians are unbearable here," he said. Palestinians can’t walk on the street, which is designated for Israelis only. To get out of their houses Palestinians walk through their roofs and out the back through a hole. In the army, Mikhael behaved in a way of which he is not proud. “But the trauma of being shot at is much greater than the trauma of shooting." Mikhael is a member of 'Breaking the Silence', an organisation of former Israeli soldiers who raise awareness amongst ordinary Israelis about injustice in Palestine. Trócaire supports people like Mikhael who are standing up for the rights of ordinary Palestinians and seeking to build peace with justice.

WOMEN DEMAND THEIR RIgHT TO FARM
Fideline Ramos, El Salvador.
“As women it was the first time we had done anything like this. We realised we could produce food for our family.”
TrocaireSupporters11 new colours.indd 9
Fideline Ramos, El Salvador Fideline Ramos from El Salvdor has an entrepreneurial spirit but until recently it remained locked up. For six months each year her husband worked away from home on a plantation. Fideline struggled to make ends meet but was powerless when it came to earning money. In rural El Salvador it’s unusual for men to allow their wives to work. Once Fideline joined a Trócaire-funded project, where women learned to grow and sell vegetables, everything changed. Her income grew so much that her husband now sells the pickled vegetables she produces to local shops. It’s a team effort. “I feel independent because now I help my husband support the household. Women don't have to be under the control of men,” she said.

PROTECTINg FAMILIES FROM CYCLONES In 2008 Helena Nhunho and her family lost their home in Mozambique during a cyclone. She spent three nights sleeping rough with her children while suffering through treacherous wind and rain. This was the third time her house collapsed in a storm. But it would be the last. Trócaire worked with a local organisation to move the family to a safer area. Together we built new homes that withstand cyclones and constructed water systems for drinking, sanitation and irrigation. Importantly, Helena and her community learned how to survive when cyclones hit. Local committees were equipped to evacuate people and a radio station provides weather warnings. “When the floods came all the houses were destroyed,” said Helena. “We suffered cholera and disease because the wind carried dirt into the wells. Now we’ve got clean water so our children are no longer sick and our house is much stronger.”

Abbas Ali and his family, Pakistan.
REBUILDINg LIFE AFTER SLAVERY Abbas Ali (50) was a slave. Working at a brick kiln, his meagre wage made it inevitable that he would become trapped in debt to the owner. He and his family were enslaved for a loan worth the the equivalent of just €256/£233. When Abbas’ son asked the kiln owner to settle the debt, he was forced to walk on burning coals. When he later protested about their inhumane work conditions, he was shot dead. Abbas and his family fled for their lives and sought shelter with an organisation funded by Trócaire. He is now seeking justice for his son’s death through the legal system. “This is the only experience in my life where I have seen efforts by other humans to bring justice or to tell the truth. I have never before experienced truth,” said Abbas. You have helped 5,000 bonded labourers like abbas gain freedom from slavery since 2006.
