Welcome Welcome to the first Retail Times of 2026. The latest CSO figures show that the domestic economy continued to grow last year, but that headline data doesn’t always reflect the reality on the ground. What we continue to hear from members is that trading remains exceptionally challenging, with cost pressures and changing consumer behaviour creating real strain for many retailers. And yet, despite those pressures, there is still huge commitment, ingenuity and hard work happening across our industry, something clearly on show at the recent Elavon Retail Excellence Awards. Congratulations to all of the businesses featured in this edition, and in particular to Windyridge Garden Centre on being named National Retailer of the Year.

Our partnership with Elavon is also gathering momentum; their engagement with Retail Excellence and support for members has already been very positive.

Advocacy remained a major focus throughout 2025. The contribution of members who spoke before the Oireachtas Joint Committee, including Aoife McBride of MacBee’s Boutique and Enrico De Luca of Maxi Zoo, helped highlight how far out of step Irish cost levels have become compared with the EU. Our regional engagement also strengthened, with well-attended events in both Connacht and Cork, giving members a platform to voice concerns directly and share practical experiences with one another.

Looking to the year ahead, planning is well underway for the Retail Retreat on 19– 20 May in the Lyrath Estate. Last year’s gathering was a real demonstration of the value of coming together as a sector to learn, to challenge, and to look ahead, and we aim to build on that again in 2026.

Retail has never been easy, and 2026 will require real focus. At times, it feels like Retail Excellence is the only organisation calling out the pressures retailers are facing, but we will continue to do so. Our job is to keep pushing for practical change and better conditions for the sector. With that commitment, and with members working together, we can make 2026 a more positive year for Irish retail.

REI Hosts Connacht Member Event in Castlebar Retail Excellence Ireland was delighted to host our Connaught member event in Castlebar just before Christmas. Minister for Retail, Alan Dillon joined us as well to address members. REI was forthright in highlighting the avalanche of cost increases being imposed on businesses due to Government policy, ensuring Minister Dillon heard first-hand the struggles many retailers face as they try to manage their rising costs. More than 50 retail members attended, which provided a fantastic networking night. Thank you to all the members who attended, to our hosts Peter Cooke of Elavon Europe and Mike Flynn of Core Optimisation, as well as our panellists, Pat McDonagh of Supermacs, Michael O’Callaghan of Carraig Donn and John Horkan of Horkans Garden Centre.

APPLEGREEN EXPANSION SEES FIRST TACO BELL IN IRELAND

CHANGING COFFEE DRINKING TRENDS EMERGE Almost half of Irish adults say they drink more coffee now than they did ten years ago, according to new research by Java Republic. A survey commissioned by the coffee specialists and carried out by Amárach Research earlier this year found that 76% of the 1,000 respondents (79% men and 73% women) identify as coffee drinkers, with 47% saying their consumption of the drink has increased over the last decade. The research also found that one quarter of adults drink up to four cups of coffee per day, showing a growing demand across Ireland. Some 68% of Irish people who responded to the survey say they drink one to two cups per day, while 5% enjoy up to five or six daily, and 2% drink more than that. Taste proved the most important factor when it comes to choosing coffee, the survey finds, with 88% of people prioritising flavour, while 62% say price is most important and 23% say ethical sourcing is the key factor. Interestingly, 50% of people say they would not reduce their coffee consumption if prices went up.

The country’s first Taco Bell restaurant has opened at a brand new Applegreen in Dunshaughlin. The launch is part of a €15million investment by the fuel and forecourt retailer in the new motorway service area at Junction 6 on the M3 that will create more than 100 jobs at the facility. Applegreen is undergoing a €1billion plan to expand its business in Ireland, the UK and the US over the next five years, with the Dunshaughlin facility it’s largest single investment project in Ireland this year.

Seamus Stapleton, Managing Director of Applegreen’s Republic of Ireland business, said the company plans to open several more Taco Bell restaurants at its Irish locations over the next five years.

REI CALLS FOR FAIR PLAYING FIELD Retail Excellence Ireland’s CEO Jean McCabe has said Irish retailers feel that it is not “a fair playing field” when they have to compete with regulation-ignoring “distant sellers” such as Temu and Shein. Ms McCabe added that she is 100% behind calls to introduce a levy on small items imported from China, and that a percentage of sales or a flat fee of €5 would be a deterrent welcomed by Irish retailers.

Mercury Retail Services Opens New Showroom Mercury Retail Services has opened a new showroom in Ballymount, Dublin, to showcase innovations in retail loss prevention, digital signage and customer analytics. The opening event in September saw the company that has merged Johnston Retail Services and Mercury Systems, welcome more than 100 retailers, and also featured a keynote speech from retail futurist and founder of retail research company Echochamber Ltd, Matthew Brown, who shared valuable insights on the future of retail worldwide.

Pharmacy retailer Boots has opened its newest store in Dublin’s Docklands area. This new addition expands their presence in one of the capital’s fastest growing communities and has created ten new permanent roles. It features a full-service pharmacy providing prescriptions, health advice and vaccination and healthcare services as well as a wide range of beauty and skincare brands. Commenting on the new opening, Stephen Watkins, Managing Director of Boots Ireland said: “I’m delighted to bring Boots to Point Square. This new store reflects our commitment to investing in vibrant town and city centres, creating local jobs, and making healthcare and beauty more accessible. The team are ready to welcome customers and patients, and I’m confident the store will quickly become a valued part of the community.”

REI Raises Cost of Doing Business Issue at Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Retail Excellence Ireland CEO Jean McCabe recently addressed the Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to outline how rapidly rising labour costs and minimum wage increases are pushing many otherwise viable retail businesses to breaking point. Joined by Aoife McBride of MacBee’s Boutique, Killarney, and Enrico De Luca of Maxi Zoo Ireland Ltd, our CEO called for fair, sustainable policies and relief measures for retailers, a review of how the minimum wage is calculated, and a regulatory environment that supports rather than burdens business.

Located at 32 Wicklow Street in the heart of Dublin’s busiest shopping district, the twostorey space is the largest of its kind in Ireland and the UK and features Longines’ full collection. Underlining the excellence and craftmanship of the brand, the store is also designed to immerse visitors in its heritage of 190 years of Swiss watchmaking, showcasing “storytelling, authenticity and emotional connection”.

EXCELLENCE What a night it was in Kilkenny! The Lyrath Estate Hotel played host to more than 500 retail leaders for the 2025 Elavon Retail Excellence Ireland Awards — a celebration of the very best our industry has to offer.

This year’s awards recognised outstanding retailers right across the country, with winners announced in 22 categories. The top prize, National Retailer of the Year, went to Windyridge Nurseries & Garden Centre in Dún Laoghaire. Matthew Brown of Echochamber praised the team’s friendly atmosphere, helpful staff, and unwavering focus on customer experience — a true example of retail done right.

Meanwhile, Whelehan’s Wines in Dublin took home Independent Store of the Year in association with VISA. Edward Fitzgerald of Detail was impressed by the team’s deep product knowledge and commitment to making every visit a genuine pleasure for customers.

On the digital front, eCommerce continues to be a game-changer for many Irish retailers. The Nude Wine Co. from Kildare picked up Small Online Retailer of the Year, Michael Murphy Home Furnishing also from Kildare claimed Medium Online Retailer of the Year, and Large Online Retailer of the Year went to McElhinneys in Donegal. Rounding out the online accolades, Kilkenny Design was named eCommerce Team of the Year for its innovation and customer-first digital approach.

Reflecting on the night, Retail Excellence Ireland CEO Jean McCabe said she was delighted to celebrate another year of outstanding retail success: “The calibre of entries this year has been incredible. It’s inspiring to see how the creativity and resilience of Irish retailers continue to shine, even as they navigate rising costs and ongoing challenges.

There’s real energy and optimism across the sector, and that gives us every reason to look forward to 2026.”

Accepting the top award, Paul Harvey, co-owner of Windyridge Garden Centre, was quick to share credit with his team: “We’re over the moon about this win, but it’s really our team who deserve the spotlight. Their positivity and passion are what make Windyridge special. After 63 years as a family-run business, we’re still focused on improving and finding new ways to delight our customers. Our staff live that every single day.

They’re always learning, always trying new ideas, and always pushing to make the experience special for everyone who walks through the door. This award is really for them. We couldn’t be prouder, and we’re looking forward to celebrating with our customers over the coming weeks.”

The night was a wonderful showcase of everything great about Irish retail — innovation, passion, and community spirit in abundance.

A Growing Success Hopeless Botanics Shares a Love of Houseplant Care in Dublin Erin Thomas started Hopeless Botanics in 2020, and the shop in the thriving Liberties area of Dublin has, like the plants they sell, flourished.

“I used to work in overseas aid and as soon as I had a family, I knew I didn’t want to be travelling as much,” says Erin. “I dreamed about starting my own business, and I think it was always going to be plants.”

It isn’t easy to start a business during a pandemic, but the lockdown actually gave Erin the impetus to really invest in her dream.

“Lockdown was challenging as we were all navigating the unknown,” she says, “but weirdly it provided me with a great window to test out my business idea. There was no pressure. The world went online for escapism and so many people were focusing on projects they could do at home. I set up an Instagram account, and just got going.

I did a pop-up shop in the Fumbally Stables and couldn’t believe how into it people were and also how kind and supportive. I think the business mantra of just starting, listening and pivoting as you go, as opposed to waiting for perfection, is the truest thing ever.”

Operating online since they opened, Hopeless Botanics 2022 took on a lease for a commercial unit in 2022.

“The outlay of opening a bricks and mortar business on a DIY budget has taught me many lessons in cash flow management and pacing our growth,” Erin says. “I’ve learned what areas of the business we need to lean into, and what to say no to. I’m optimistic we’ll be building on gains year on year.

“My staff are just the best,” she continues. “We have a wonderful team of hardworking, smart, creative and brilliant women.”

With a focus on customer experience, Hopeless Botanics enjoy a good returning customer rate.

“We make houseplant care more straightforward for people,” Erin says.

“We regularly hear from people ‘the

plants I buy from you always thrive’. It’s music to our ears! It’s not just about making the sale, it’s about setting the customer up for success, guiding them to love plants as much as we do. We encourage people to really consider their plant purchase. I know this seems non-conducive to encouraging impulse sales! But we help people choose a plant that matches their light at home.

We also do not stock spraypainted plants, or plants that are tricky to keep alive. We only stock A grade, the best quality plants, and prioritise working with growers who are reducing plastic use.”

Plans for 2026 are to keep building on the success of the store both at the premises and online.

“I’m working on developing some of our very own HB products and I’d love to dedicate more time to creating helpful, informative content for people who want to bring easy care plants into their homes,” Erin concludes.

This year’s winner blew the judges away with the sheer breath and width of initiatives to drive their online business forward. They are focused on their vision to democratise wine for buyers, making it easier and taking away a lot of the jargon. Videos play a big part, which help to describe the wines, their taste notes, similarities and good complimentary offerings. A wine finder quiz helps give personal recommendations to website viewers. They are constantly surveying their customers for feedback, which was noted as a forgotten asset by my businesses. They run their own wine awards for their customers that creates a buzz and involves their community. They manage a very active WhatsApp community, as well as putting themselves out there in the media across radio and tv to talk about wine.

The Medium Online Retailer of the Year winner this year showed a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to scale as an online business that impressed the judges. They have invested heavily in the online business to allow it grow by investing in their platform, taking inspirational photography, crafting a story and focusing on every touchpoint of the journey. The use of feature icons on the product page to highlight benefits was a lovely touch. The use of interactive imagery to show the different elements of quality in a product was noted. They have even employed a data scientist in house to really drive their insights and utilise all their data. This is one online retailer to watch!

Large Online Retailer of the Year:

McElhinneys

This year’s winner showed that Irish retailers can stand toe to toe with our international counterparts in the Ecommerce space, shipping regularly to more than 70 countries worldwide, engaging with thousands of social media fans every day, and driving world class efficiency in the back end. The team take all their own photos and have perfected their own product info management system, uploading thousands of skews every day seamlessly as well as experimenting with AI for model photography. Their social media presence was noted as being exceptionally engaging, with a large private Facebook group for their VIPS. This retailer thoroughly deserves the recognition to be crowned this year’s Large Online Retailer of the Year.

Responsible Retailers Vision Ireland Wins Responsible Retailer of the Year at the Elavon Retail Excellence Ireland Awards 2025

ision Ireland, Ireland’s national sight loss agency, won the coveted Responsible Retailer of the Year Award at the Elavon Retail Excellence Awards in November.

In a highly competitive category, Vision Ireland took home the top prize ahead of major national retailers including Applegreen, Intersport Elverys, and Kilkenny Design.

This award recognises retailers that lead the way in sustainability, ethics, and community impact, and Vision Ireland, whose mission is to transform the lives of people who are blind or vision impaired saw their work and commitment to doing good while doing great work being recognised on the night.

Aisling Doyle of US Bank, who was judge in this category, said: “The Retail Excellence Ireland Awards were energetic, vibrant and thoughtful, much like the many finalists. I was honoured to present the Responsible Retailer of the Year Award to Vision Ireland, who shone through in their category and make meaningful impacts in their communities every day.”

Whelehan’s Wines in Dublin won the Independent Store of the Year in association with VISA Award at this year’s Elavon Retail Excellence Awards. The judges were impressed by the excellent knowledge of staff and focus on making the retail process an enjoyable occasion.

Called the “most awarded wine store in Ireland” due to the number of awards they have been given over the years, they picked up the prize after showing exceptional product curation, merchandising, an engaging store environment that really brings the customer along a journey into wine-loving, as well as a great use of technology that together, blew the judges away.

The company was launched in 2014 at the Silver Tassie in South Co. Dublin by David Whelehan, who has been submerged in the world of wine for more than 40 years. The first Irish Times Wine correspondent, and contributor to the Irish Times weekly for 25 years, he is also the author of Irish Wines of Bordeaux.

Having learned about wine tasting at an early age, gaining experience working in wineries in California, and judging at major wine competitions across the globe, he has gathered a great team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic wine professionals at Whelehan’s Wines to build one of the largest wine offerings in Ireland.

Woodie’s continues to be recognised as one of Ireland’s most trusted and successful retailers. What’s driving the strong performance at the moment, and how would you describe trading in 2025?

We’ve had a good 2025 and overall trading has been positive, and I’m glad to say we achieved many of our goals for the year. What we’ve seen is that the home improvement category remains resilient, with customers continuing to invest in making their homes and gardens more comfortable and personal to them.

A key focus for us has been doing the simple things consistently well — delivering great service, offering genuine value, and ensuring customers have the inspiration and advice they need. We’ve also been expanding and refining our range across DIY, home, garden and seasonal categories so we can offer a broad choice to our customers.

Alongside this, we continue to invest in our stores, our online experience and, of course, our people.

Woodie’s was recently certified as a Guaranteed Irish retailer — something we’re very proud of, and which reinforces our commitment to supporting Irish jobs, Irish suppliers and the Irish economy. It’s the combination of a strong multichannel offer, an evolving and relevant range,

communities surrounding our stores, and we’re very focused on doing our best to be a good neighbour.

Over the last 11 years, we’ve raised more than €4.7 million for Irish children’s charities through Woodie’s Heroes. The enthusiasm and generosity from our customers, colleagues and suppliers never ceases to amaze me. We’ve also introduced volunteer days, giving every colleague the opportunity to support causes close to their hearts; so far this year, our colleagues have dedicated more than 260 volunteer days in communities right across Ireland.

Community is also a big focus of our Woodie’s Budding Gardener schools programme, which encourages children to get hands-on with gardening and learn about nature in a fun, accessible way. It’s a brilliant initiative that helps bring the joy of growing to the next generation.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to have partnered with Grow It Yourself (GIY) to support their mission of inspiring people to grow their own food at home.

Being a good neighbour is part of who we are. Every one of our stores is deeply embedded in its local community, and we want to make a real, lasting difference. In addition to the €598,000 raised through Woodie’s Heroes in 2025, we’ll also contribute close to €350,000 to community and charitable causes across the country.

As the business looks ahead, are new store locations something you’re considering as part of Woodie’s longterm growth plan?

We’re really excited about opening in Ennis in 2026, bringing our estate to a total of 36 stores. It’s our first store in Co. Clare and builds on our ambition of having a Woodie’s customer in every home in Ireland. The store will bring more than 30 new jobs to the area and a best-in-class shopping experience for local customers — from home improvement and décor to outdoor living and garden.

It’s a sign of our confidence in the Irish market and our commitment to making Woodie’s accessible to more customers across the country.

Woodie’s has been expanding its range and evolving its offer in recent years. How are you making sure customers have the choice, value and experience they’re looking for?

We offer customers a range of more than 30,000 products across DIY, home and garden, and we’re constantly expanding and developing that range to meet their evolving needs. Our teams work hard to bring newness to our customers — whether that’s tapping into emerging trends in home and garden, widening price points to offer more value, or introducing more sustainable options for customers who want to make sustainable choices.

Choice is a big part of it, but so is convenience. Customers want to shop in the way that suits them, and we’ve invested strongly in that. We now have 35 stores nationwide, an evergrowing Digital Store, and a clickand-collect service with an improved collection time of just four hours, which customers really appreciate.

We also joined the Arena buying group this year, which strengthens our buying power and gives us access to even more innovation. It allows us to bring a broader, more relevant range to customers while still maintaining the flexibility and local focus that makes Woodie’s unique. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring customers can find everything they need for their home and garden — at the right quality, at the right value and in a way that fits easily into their lives.

As consumer behaviour continues to evolve, what’s next for Woodie’s both in-store and online as you look ahead to 2026?

We’re continuing to invest in both our digital platforms and our in-store experience. Customers increasingly move between channels — researching online and buying in-store, or vice versa — so it’s about creating a seamless and inspiring experience wherever they shop with us. We’re also seeing strong growth in sustainable products, and that’s an area we’re passionate about. We offer our customers environmentally friendly choices — from energy-saving products to sustainable gardening solutions.

At the same time, we’ll keep investing in our people, because they’re the ones who bring the Woodie’s brand and values to life every day.

What makes you most proud of Woodie’s as you look to the year ahead?

Navigating Retail Recruitment in 2026 Excel Recruitment’s Aislinn Lea Shares Her Expert Perspective

I’ve had a front-row seat to one of the most fast-moving and challenging periods the Irish retail sector has seen in years. Looking back on 2025 and ahead into 2026, one thing is clear: Irish retail recruitment is vibrant, but it’s also more complex than ever.

From our 2026 Non-Food & Fashion Retail Salary Guide, we saw more than three times more retail roles registered in the final quarter of 2025 than in the same period in 2024. That shows real confidence in the sector, but also the difficulties retailers are facing in finding and keeping the right people.

A more selective candidate market Candidates are no longer moving for “another job”. They are more selective in what they want from a career.

Location, flexibility, and quality of life are ahead of traditional progression or job titles. We’ve also seen a shift in salary expectations. The most in-demand salary band for retail management roles, previously between €35,000 and €42,000, has now moved to €40,000–€52,000.

It is becoming difficult for employers to attract managers with three to four years’ experience for under €40,000. That puts pressure on payroll budgets, particularly for independent and SME retailers.

The impact of the minimum wage increase The increase in the national minimum wage to €14.15 per hour is a positive development for workers, but it’s not without consequences for employers.

Larger retail chains offering higher entry-level rates are attracting a sizeable share of the junior talent pool: people who might have started and grown their careers in smaller businesses. SMEs are finding it harder to compete, not just on pay, but the full package needed to attract and retain staff.

Why employer brand and benefits now matter more Salary alone is no longer enough.

Candidates are making decisions based on the overall employment proposition: • The strength and reputation of the brand • Day-to-day working conditions • Work–life balance and flexibility Retailers who are winning the war for talent are offering: • 37.5 – 39-hour contracts • 23–25 days’ annual leave • Contributory pension schemes • Predictable scheduling and regular weekends off Even small, thoughtful benefits make a big difference and are often the details candidates remember when comparing offers.

The challenge of city-centre vacancies There is a growing reluctance among candidates to commute long distances or into city-centre locations. Commuting time, public transport costs, and parking fees are deterrents. Employers who offset these - through flexible scheduling, hybrid arrangements for head office positions, travel supports, or parking contributions - are better placed to secure talent.

Leadership is the real differentiator Across both retail and head office support functions, one theme stands out: leadership. Our clients are no longer looking for managers who are simply strong operators; they want people who can lead, coach, and develop teams.

Succession planning and internal growth have become essential to longterm retention. SEAI offers financial supports for most energy upgrade measures with streamlined rapid approval business supports that allow businesses to apply in minutes and receive near-instant approval. The grant payment structure is transparent, with businesses receiving either the amount offered at application or 30% of the invoice amount, whichever is lower. For larger or more complex projects, SEAI offers tailored business supports that fund a percentage of your investment, accommodating a wide range of upgrade measures.

Electric vehicles offer many benefits to businesses including lower costs, positive brand image, and emission reductions. There are several financial

As a result, annual savings of €66,336 have been achieved, as well as CO2 emission savings equivalent to removing 88 cars from the roads.

How was 2025 for DPD, and what is the condition of the retail logistics industry in Ireland?

2025 has been another strong year of growth for DPD in Ireland. We have continued to offer over 99% service level to our customers and our customer retention rate remains extremely high. However, the market has seen significant shifts with the unfortunate exit of Fastway. This has seen volume hitting the market at the busiest time of the year, and left some shippers in a difficult position. We have assisted a number of those and given a large number of ex-Fastway drivers jobs for the peak period. Our primary objective was to safeguard the loyalty of our customer base while maintaining our commitment to exceptional service.

Tell me about your new locker offering for businesses.

Traditionally in Ireland, we prefer to have our online purchases delivered to our home. However, a change in buyer behaviour, with increasing demand for more convenient, out of home options, driven by consumer platforms such as

Vinted and TikTok Shop, requires a great service but not the same speed of delivery. 2026 is the year in which Out of Home will make its debut in Ireland. We have close to 150k Out of Home options available across Europe.

In 2026, we will have over 1,000 locations available in Ireland, made up of both convenient parcel shops and automated lockers.

What will be the benefits for retail businesses?

These services will present retailers with more options to offer their consumers. By bringing lockers and shops closer to the consumer, not only will deliveries be more convenient, returns will also become simpler.

The increase in footfall and the convenience it brings to customers will drive additional opportunities for bricks and mortar businesses hosting these locations.

And for consumers?

Consumers will have more choices.

Deliveries and returns will be simplified and waiting in for a parcel will become a thing of the past. It is

great for the environment too. When the delivery can be collected in a convenient location en route, or as part of another journey we are already doing, our overall emissions are reduced significantly.

How will this strengthen the DPD business brand?

Dublin’s Living Bookshop Chapters CEO Mick Finucane on how the bookstore maintains its community feel while expanding nationwide online Chapters is more than a bookshop – it’s a belief system. Founded more than 40 years ago and still proudly independent, the store reopened its doors in 2022 under new ownership, to a response that literally stopped traffic. Queues ran down Parnell Street as Dubliners celebrated the return of what Dublin City Council later called “a culturally important part of the city”.

Since reopening, business has been vibrant. Sales and footfall continue to grow, but the real success lies in belonging: readers returning, bringing friends, and treating Chapters as part of their lives. The shop hums with activity – author events, book clubs, chess tournaments, poetry nights, and even first dates between the shelves.

What makes Chapters different is its personality. It’s Ireland’s largest independent bookshop, but feels like a collection of small specialist stores under one roof. Each section reflects the passion of its booksellers – from Irish fiction and poetry to philosophy, history, and cult paperbacks. The pioneering “Purple Sticker” scheme lets readers trade new books within a month for half their value in credit, making discovery affordable while keeping books in circulation.

GOING ONLINE When Chapters reopened, it had not yet traded online, so a digital infrastructure was built from scratch.

An ecommerce site was built over a weekend, before tackling the trickier challenge of second-hand trading.

Bespoke software was developed to manage the complexities of used books – where edition, year, condition, publisher, and rarity all affect value, and many titles have no ISBNs. Within three years, Chapters has built Ireland’s first fully integrated online second-hand and trade-in system for books, allowing customers

to buy, sell, or exchange sustainably.

Each time a second-hand book is read again, it reduces waste and emissions and saves resources – proving that sustainability and accessibility can coexist. With hundreds of thousands of new titles published annually, and a range spanning 150 years, this circular

model keeps books moving, stories circulating, and readers coming back.

Sustainability at Chapters is ecological, cultural, and financial.

The store has substantially cut its water and energy use with efficiency upgrades and timers, eliminated almost all plastic packaging, and recycles wherever possible. Alongside its mixed model of new, used, and online sales, it ensures long-term resilience and independence.

At its core, Chapters is community.

Based in Dublin’s North Inner City, it’s a welcoming “third space” where people meet as equals. The shop partners with DEIS schools, the Trinity Access Programme, and charities including the Simon Community and Dublin Rape Crisis Centre – proving literacy and inclusion thrive side by side.

We are delighted to have been named the An Post Bookshop of the Year at the 2025 Irish Book Awards at the end of November. Looking to 2026, Chapters plans to deepen its community partnerships, expand its trade-in model nationwide, and host more cross-venue literary events.

Taking time to plan and allocating a budget to properly execute a HR strategy brings more chance of success, says Tommy Smyth

Employers in the Retail industry vary from small local operators to multi-national enterprises. They all need skilled, dedicated employees to help achieve business goals and objectives. The suggestion to develop a clear people, or HR, strategy will be familiar to some readers and completely alien to others.

Even if an employer has no formal HR department and/or if leadership skills don’t come naturally to senior management, it is still really important to dedicate time and resources to your team. If asked, most employers will say their team are a key part of their business and their success. The challenge we pose in this article is whether employers give enough attention to supporting and developing what they say is such a key asset to their business.

You rely on team members to: • Sell goods or services • Give customers/clients/visitors an excellent experience when interacting with your business • Work as a team in a respectful and collaborative manner • Innovate and help their business adapt and progress • Act with integrity and honestly in all aspects of their role If you are interested in progressing your HR function in 2026, some suggested goals or projects include:

Master Compliance – Show your team and your business the respect of being compliant with the law of the land. Avoid adverse publicity and don’t give the valued colleagues a reason to be disappointed in the event of a WRC inspection or workplace dispute. At a minimum you should: ■ Ensure your Contracts of Employment and Policies have been modernised to reflect up-to-date legislation and workplace norms ■ Keep accurate records of working hours and rest break compliance ■ Ensure any work permits and under 18 worker records are up to date.

Have a Positive Culture – The culture of your workplace is clearly signposted by the worst behaviours and habits you tolerate ■ Set clear and realistic goals for every employee and support them being attained ■ Encourage work/life balance ■ Prioritise and support professional and personal growth ■ Encourage open conversations and crave feedback ■ Recognise good work, from simple words to financial rewards ■ Promote collaboration over competition

Reward fairly (and transparently!) – Be clear and consistent in the rewards you offer. Watch for further pay transparency legislation coming in 2026 ■ The move from a minimum wage (which is €14.15 in 2025) to a living wage of 60% of the median wage has flattened a lot of traditional pay scales as employers cannot afford three or four stages above this figure.

■ Many employers are pivoting and not making rewards service-based, but skills-based. The more a colleague develops skills that offer more opportunity to add to the bottom line, the more an employer may choose to reward them.

■ To accompany wages, most employers are considering a range of other terms, conditions, and benefits to add to their overall offering and attractiveness as an employer. This includes: • Flexible working options • Remote work or working from home (WFH) • Extra annual leave (possibly service-based) • Enhanced sick pay above SSP • Company Pension more attractive than AE • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) or Mental Health First Aiders • Gift cards using the €1,500 (max) tax free small benefit exemption • Further training and development – internal training, e-learning modules, 3rd level sponsored education • Environmental / corporate social responsibility programs e.g. charity partnerships or carbon reduction plan

Invest in leaders – Consider everyone responsible for the work of others. Are they natural born leaders or do they need your support?

■ Can they manage their time effectively?

■ Do they understand how to have difficult conversations?

■ Do they have the respect of their team?

■ Do they treat everyone equally?

■ Do they know how to host HR meetings as required?

■ Will they intervene if they witness or hear of inappropriate occurrences?

Of course, not all of the above lists and options will be relevant to all organisations. However, all employers can develop a plan that suits their own requirements. As HR Consultants entering our 35th year in business, we know HR and people strategies don’t excite all Retail business owners. It is clear in our experience, however, that if you take some time and allocate a budget to properly plan and execute a HR strategy, it is an investment that will reap significant rewards. CHANGES IN CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR KPMG’s Next Gen Retail Survey Shows There Are Challenges As Well As Opportunities In A Changing Retail Environment

t revealed that 77% of Irish shoppers found shopping to be significantly more expensive in 2025, compared to 72% in 2024.

David O’Kelly, Head of Consumer, Retail & Manufacturing at KPMG, said: “For retailers, it’s about hitting the sweet spot on pricing that understands the pressure on disposable income but also gets it right on margin, range, stock and technology. It’s a fine balance in a hugely competitive sector.”

Price is still the primary factor influencing consumers when choosing where to shop, with 56% ranking it as crucial, while Quality is the second biggest driver (17%).

Attitudes to shopping The findings suggest that shoppers were carefully budgeting their spend and had a strong emphasis on value, with more than half (54%) reducing their shopping due to having less disposable income.

Shoppers continue to cut back Almost one third (32%) of Irish consumers report feeling less financially secure, compared to 27% in 2024. This sentiment has led to an intensified focus on price and value for money in their shopping behaviour.

Growth in online shopping Interest in online shopping is rising, with more than half (55%) considering

it cheaper than in-store options and 49% stating that buying products online is easier.

Sustainability awareness and usage grows Sustainability awareness among Irish consumers continues to rise, with 82% now using the Deposit Return Scheme, up from 77% last year.

AI uncertainty persists Irish shoppers are divided on the benefits of AI in their shopping experiences. Older consumers and those in rural areas show hesitation, while younger generations embrace AI’s advantages.
