ou are all very welcome to the 2018 Gold Medal Awards, held in association with Hotel & Catering Review magazine.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the awards, a momentous occasion for an event that celebrates the outstanding achievements of the hotel and catering sector across the country. This year has been a relatively positive one for the sector thus far – despite concerns over Brexit, visitor numbers have risen in 2018, hotel room revenue growth outside of Dublin continues to benefit from a spread in the benefits of tourism, a strong pipeline of new hotel room stock is on the cards, and many hotels have plans in place to increase staff in the months ahead. It’s no wonder that we received so many entries this year! Judges for this year’s Gold Medal Awards received over 450 entries in total to consider, from 150 hotels, guest houses, country houses, restaurants, cafés, bars and catering companies from across the country. New categories featured on the menu this year are the division of the fine dining and casual dining categories into Hotel Restaurant and Stand-alone Restaurant. An important factor in the Gold Medal Awards is the credibility and impartial nature of the judging process. Every property that undergoes this process is subject to benchmarking against a strict set of criteria and a blind site inspection conducted by the judging panel. This panel comprises respected industry experts from across the hospitality, culinary and catering sectors. “The investment and development in the Irish hotel and catering industry in terms of both new builds and renovations over the last number of years is very apparent and the judging panel had a very difficult task in deciding on winners in many categories. With this investment, it is essential that the guest service which we are known for is not diluted and we encountered some exceptional people in businesses, who are truly the backbone of our industry” Donagh Davern FIHI and member of Judging Panel. IRELAND’S FAVOURITE PLACE TO STAY This year we were delighted to bring to the public the People’s Choice Award Ireland’s Favourite Place to Stay! All hotels, country houses and guest houses that were made a finalist in our other categories were instantly entered into the Ireland’s Favourite Place to Stay category to battle it out in a public vote. The categories were broken down by province with a gruelling 2 weeks of voting and a tight race right up until the closing deadline of midday on Wednesday, September 12th. The properties that received the most votes from each province will be going head to head tonight and the property with the most overall votes will take home the trophy of Ireland’s Favourite Place to Stay.
