et in 350 acres of parkland between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, Ashford Castle has stood in Cong, County Mayo since 1228. Founded by the Anglo Norman de Burgo family, following their defeat of e nati e O onnors of onnaug . As ford Castle became their principal stronghold for the next three and a alf cen uries. n a er a fierce ba le e de urgo s los con rol of As ford as le o Englis o cial ir ic ard ing am ord Presiden of onnaug . Sir Benj amin Lee Guinness, of the brewing dynasty, purchased Ashford in 1852, further extending the estate to acres building new roads and lanting ousands of trees.
