LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The Final Moments Before Greatness

Audrey Sheehy outgoing print editor in chief

Only because I have seen this movie too many times to be healthy for any human being, I want to open with: “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” I’m sure many of you reading this would be able to finish this entire scene from Miracle, and I’m sure you are probably reciting the rest of Herb Brooks’ legendary speech in your heads right now. However, whether you have heard this quotation before or not, I want it to challenge each of us to strive for what Brooks was talking about when we leave the halls of Edina High School today for the last time: greatness. I have always been a firm believer that you can be whatever you want to be. Greatness isn’t necessarily being world-renowned with a high paying job, but it is achieving your full potential in everything you do. Of course, the means of getting there may not be what we expect. Racism, sexism, classism, violence, and life’s general unfairness

will no doubt get in our ways. But we live to fight. By opposing injustice, which tries to set us back, we actually achieve greatness. In the end, our work ethic, not our money, our looks, our intelligence, or our popularity, is all we really have to our character. As long as you are honest and genuine, people will want to help you get to wherever you want to go. But to achieve greatness, you have to take risks. I still remember the first time that I walked into Zephyrus. I recall having my hand slip on the handle when I went to open the door because I was so nervous. I remember being overwhelmed by the chaos of kids who rolled around in mismatching, broken computer chairs in the disorganized Publication Room where paper filled every crevice and computer cords took up half of the table space. I remember almost wetting my pants when I met 6-foot-too-much, straight-faced Tanner Sparrow and he said he did recreational drugs for fun in our group discussion. (Of course at the time, I was a little slow to pick up on his sense of humor.) I remember frantically wondering what I was getting myself into, and I clearly remember being the kid who avoided every social event, did my best to minimize conversation, never went out of my way to meet anyone, and kept my head down to write more articles. I can’t exactly pinpoint the moment when I decided to branch out, but now, I am – or well, was – Zephyrus’ print editorin-chief. In all honesty, I almost never joined Zephyrus, and I most certainly never saw myself being here three years later. Zephyrus has been one of my greatest high school experiences, and I owe that to this year’s Ed

Board who have done nothing but been amazing, supportive people. They have built a community here at EHS that I will never forget. Despite all the stress, Saturday layouts, and deadlines, I would walk into class every day to be greeted by a group of people who believed in themselves, each other, and me. So here’s thanks to: Farhia Osman, for her smiles and laugher that could make anyone’s awful day turn bright, to Megan Hussey for her inextinguishable sass that makes everything around her sizzle, to Madeline Marker for her brutal honesty that has my utmost respect, to John Osler for his satirical ideas and “Onioness” that never fails to make me laugh, to Noah Chestler for his intimidating intelligence that spawned the humor page, his good grammar, and his great advice, and to Erik Lindquist for his chillness and composure, which is always “so fly.” I have no idea where they will all be in the future, but I know each of them will find greatness because they already have here at Zephyrus. During these last days, I hope we, the senior class of EHS, take time to look around us and thank those classmates who have made a difference in our lives, who have supported us, believed in us, and challenged us to be great because next year they won’t be sitting beside us. These next four years are not going to be like anything we have ever experienced before, but they are also not going to be the epic, high pressured, defining moments of our lives. We will be continually defining ourselves until we die. These upcoming years are the start of us beginning our lives on our own, further exploring our beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, personalities, and quite simply, exploring who we are and what is going to make us great. This is the opportunity that we have starting today, class of 2016. This is the opportunity that we have earned. I know that each and every one of us will find greatness. Be strong. Believe in yourself. Fight for what you believe in. And always, always work hard. Some way or another, we all are stepping into opportunity to change the world. Don’t squander it.

Senior Class of 2016 B i o g r a p h i e s Zephyrus Will Miss You!

Edina High School Senior Noah Chestler has served on Zephyrus for three years. He worked his way up the rank from staff writer his sophomore year to Opinion page editor his junior year and Print Copy Editor his senior year. Next year, Chestler will be continuing his education at the University of Minnesota where he plans to study Psychology. During his time at EHS, Chestler was very involved with Zephyrus, cross country and track, even competing at Nationals for cross country. Chestler’s favorite memory from Zephyrus happened his sophomore year when he taped Matt Dulas to his chair in class. Chestler may have dyed his hair blonde in the fall but he certainly breaks the dumb blonde stereotype. He was a National Merit Commended student and his senior year and made sure that Zephyrus was always grammatically correct. His advice for future Zephyrites is to make friends with fellow student Will Schwinghammer. Noah Chestler and his hypercritical grammar edits will be missed next year. As Hugh Cashman’s graduation day draws nearer, he claims he enjoyed his time as an Edina High School student (even the two years he spent on Zephyrus). In addition to sharing his opinions through controversial articles, Cashman enjoys traveling, sky diving, and stalking Audrey Sheehy’s mother on Instagram. His peers describe him as “quirky and fun” and unanimously agree that he is a talented writer. After a short stint as a staff writer, he quickly advanced to page editing, first editing the culture page and then the news page. Besides editing pages, Cashman’s main role in Zephyrus is providing comedic relief; he is known as one of the main contributors in the Zeph group chat (called “Huey Lewis and the news”). After school, he ___. Next fall, Cashman will attend Colorado College in order to major in neuroscience. One day, he hopes to get a girlfriend. Although the majority of the sophomores are scared of him, the rest of the staff will greatly miss Cashman next year!

fashion. We’ll miss her sass and energy.

Whether it is her original thrift store outfits or her laid back attitude Sophie Cannon perfectly represents the look and aura that all Zephyrites aspire to achieve. Sophie is a third year Zephyrus member who has excelled as a staff writer, cultural editor, and artist. Sophie can almost always be found sitting in the back of the room catching up on last week’s homework or taking a nap, which is why it is such a surprise to everyone that she will be attending Northeastern University in Boston. Sophie will be one of the few Zephyrus alumnus to pursue her passion of journalism in college along with her interest in international relations. Sophie is excited to get as far away from Edina as possible, meet new people, try new (mostly legal) things, and immerse herself in a new culture. Sophie is so excited to escape the bubble that just two months after graduation she will be expanding her travel experiences in India where she will be helping film a documentary about feminism. Hopefully, Sophie won’t love India so much that she decides to stay there because America can’t afford to lose someone as bubbly and adventurous as she is. Despite Sophie’s senior slide attitude she always delivers amazing articles and artwork in a truly effortless

John Osler, future student at Grinnell College in Iowa, will be remembered for his masterful satire and for saving Zephyrus online from horrendous grammar mistakes. He is the creator of the Southern View, an online satirical newspaper focused on Edina’s finest news stories (southernviewonline.blogspot.com). He will miss the respect, adulation, and power that his position as Online Copy Editor commands, but he won’t give a backward glance to the dozens, if not hundreds of rats in the ceiling that were undoubtedly watching him at all times. He looks forward to attending a school with some semblance of natural light, and apart from his education, dreams of rising through the ranks of Grinnell’s B&S. One of John’s many fond memories of EHS include whispering “Sic Semper Tyrannis” while passing someone in the last 100 meters of a track race. After trusting the process of choosing a college to his logic and basic reasoning skills, John plans on keeping a large pile of assorted dice in his dorm room in case he needs to make any major life choices. For his last summer before college, John will be learning to drive, because going off to college with a learner’s permit might be too much for him to bear.

As head photographer of Zephyrus, Nate Saunders is all kinds of talented. From taking photos for the school newspaper to perfecting his pot making skills in school, Nate outshines everyone with his expertise. Every year in ceramics he creates a wide range of pots to display and sell at upcoming art shows. These stunning works of art and his passion for pottery easily place him among the top artists of Edina High School and an admirable representative of the Images staff. He’s got one hectic life, between skiing, photography, Images, church, and pottery. However, when he’s not getting his hands dirty with clay, you can find him kicking back on his couch while eating salmon and watching one of his favorite movies, “Pulp Fiction” or “Django Unchained.” Another thing that makes him unique is that he’s a triplet! “It’s fun having two brothers my age because I always have people to do things with,” says Saunders. He is known for being wise beyond his years, with the grumpy grandpa demeanor to match. Saunders and his expertise will be missed next year.

SENIORS Audrey Sheehy, AKA Edina High School’s resident bada**. Don’t let her responsible, put-together exterior fool you, this girl’s got plenty of sass to go around. You may know her from the infamous “no, the OTHER number three!” incident in Van Someren’s chemistry class her sophomore year, or as a lookalike pizza man when carrying a poster board and sporting a baseball cap. Audrey made herself known on the EHS campus as a sophomore taking both DECA and Zephyrus, rising to the top of both as a DECA officer and the print editor-in-chief of Zephyrus. All of her hard work in high school has paid off; Sheehy will be joining Harvard University’s class of 2020 next year. She will look back fondly on her time in the pub room, having loved every stressful minuet she spent making the paper the best it’s ever been. She will be missed as the InDesign queen, always figuring out problems and making sure every single picture has a border. Our very own Olivia Pope, Audrey is famous for leaving her phone in the pub room during layout Saturdays to go on a cool-off walk, and telling whoever is nearest, “If anyone calls just answer for me and take a message.” Just as Audrey will miss the people of Zephyrus, the people will miss her more! Madeline Marker’s tenure at Edina High School and on Zephyrus is coming to a close. An accomplished gal (at a mere 5 feet), she is a K-12 Frenchie, a varsity athlete, and the winner of the Zephyrus Best Smile award. With 3 years of Zephyrus under her belt, she has filled many roles, publishing articles in district publications, Edina Magazine, and the print and online editions of Zephyrus as Public Relations editor her senior year. Known for her honesty and curiosity, Madeline has captured the hearts of teachers and her peers with her writing and dry humor. Besides grabbing Zephyrites’ attention with her take on life, Madeline likes Ben Gustafson (Zephyrus Sweetheart) and making new friends on staff. Never one to pass up the opportunity for a witty comment on an awkward moment, she enjoys off-topic Zephyrus arguments--when she’s not studying in the dark abyss in the publications room or hanging out with friends during collab, that is. She is excited to be a Knight next year at Carleton College as an environmental science major and soccer player! Madeline is looking forward to dorm life, “da boizz,” and making new friends. A true Zephyrus character, Madeline will be missed next year. Farhia Osman is a senior known for lighting up the room with her smile. She is continuing her education at Vassar College next year, a highly selective private liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York. She plans on majoring in cognitive science or neuroscience in hopes of achieving her dream of becoming a pediatrician. She is most excited about trying new things, meeting new people, and going to a brand new place. Once she gets to New York, she plans to visit as many museums as she can with her new friends, especially the Museum of Natural History. Osman is very excited about the location of her college because “It’s not in New York, but it’s not far, it’s perfect!” While in Zephyrus, she started as a staff writer, moved up to be features editor, and finally the art editor. Her favorite memory of Zephyrus was sitting in the corner of the pub room during her first year of being on staff and being scared of everyone, especially the seniors. But as the year progressed she became friends with everyone and each year continued to get better and better. When asked what her spirit animal was, she said that she wants to say a wolf, but she’s actually a dolphin. Osman wants everyone to know that even though she is starting a new stage in her life, she will miss Zephyrus dearly and absolutely loves everyone!

8

Megan Hussey is a third year student in Zephyrus. She started out sophomore year as a staff writer, moved on to be a culture page editor as a junior, and then served as human resources editor her senior year. Hussey proudly claims that Perry Bruder was the best Zephyrus member of all time and she looks up to Audrey Sheehy. Hussey’s fondest memory from Zephyrus? The parties. “Getting to bond with the rest of the staff and pretending to know how to skate with Farhia Osman in Sheehy’s rink was so much fun,” she said. Her favorite memory from high school as a whole was getting to perform in the Pops concert. If Hussey could change one thing about high school for future students she would “open the !@#*%&$ EPAC bathrooms, it’s just a waste of resources,” she says. Hussey’s favorite high school trend was “Crocs and socks, definitely. They will be missed,” she says. Hussey is attending St. Olaf in the fall; her favorite thing about the school is the food, a nice change from the cuisine served in the cafeteria here at EHS, she proudly stated that “$%!& was my favorite item on the menu at EHS.” Hussey would like to major in political science in the years to come and will perhaps pursue the pre-law track. “I’d love to be a lawyer when I grow up, or the President, whichever comes first I guess.” We hope Hussey finds much success in her future and she will be missed on the Zephyrus staff and as a student here at EHS. Erik Lindquist, is a supportive and kind human, and an inspiring and hardworking Zephyrite. He says that his greatest accomplishment is learning to use InDesign, but it’s really that time his face was featured on the Halloween Issue (which led to his successful career in modeling). Our favorite memory of Erik is when he foolishly decided that it would be an excellent idea to shake up an entire family sized bottle of coke. The entire staff of Zephyrus, Windigo, and the photography classes thank him for his incredibly job of getting it, literally, everywhere. The publication room remains a sticky mess thanks to his wonderful talent of exposing his inner child. Another party that would like to thank him are the EHS rats. Without him there would be no one to thank for the many dead rats that fell from the ceiling or even the time one climbed up the pub room wall. He will live on in infamy as the pied piper. We wish him well in his endeavors and thank him for his hard work these past three years. Zephyrus has lost a talented and hardworking editor in chief, he will be missed!
