A Welcome and a Warning Matt Woolsey print editor in chief

Before we at Zephyrus begin our year-long relationship with whomever is reading this, we’d like to say welcome. For you returning readers, you probably noticed some changes in our first issue (which in fact came out on Aug. 29, not Sept. 29), and are probably noticing even more change as you read this. For old and new readers alike, we hope you enjoy our new format.

With the inaugural pleasantries out of the way, I felt it was important to address some recent events surrounding Edina High School.

EHS has been undergoing policy changes like breathalyzers at school dances and no liquids or bags at football games, so it seems that there has been concern with drug and alcohol use within EHS. I believe these precautionary measures were a smart decision, there is obviously a problem with illegal activity at both dances and games, and it was smart for the school to crack down.

Unfortunately, it didn’t set in for me how much a problem drug use at EHS is until a gun was brought onto campus on Oct. 2. Trying to avoid speculation as much as possible, it seems that because of the drug bust surrounding this incident, that the gun being on campus was a result (whether direct or indirect) of drug use at EHS. I’ll be the first to say that this could be an isolated incident, but at the same time it is nothing to take lightly. Whether or not there were any intentions to use the weapon, there was a weapon on campus.

In an announcement to the school, EHS Principle Dr. Bruce Locklear stated that this is “not who we are at Edina High School.” I agree to the extent that the reputation for drug use is something that we shouldn’t be at EHS, but I do fear it is who we are becoming.

I don’t know what can be done about this problem (or for that matter, whether or not drug use is really a problem at all). I can say that I believe that recent circumstances should make anyone who spends their week days at EHS feel uneasy, not so that we all cower in fear, but rather so that we can recognize issues, and make improvements upon them.

Love or hate Edina, there is no doubt that we hold an emerald image of quality education. The last thing I want to see is that image tainted by a reputation of drug use.

EHS Alum and Published Author Eleanor Glewwe Returns to Edina Sophie Cannon culture editor

Zephyrus had the pleasure of interviewing one of Edina High School’s many successful alumni: Eleanor Glewwe. Glewwe visited EHS as her last stop on her book tour for her first published book, “Sparkers”. “Sparkers” is a young adult fiction book that follows a young violinist in the magical city of Ashara. It explores themes of corruption in the government, magic, and friendship, a combination that makes for a compelling book.

However, the interview that Zephyrus had with Glewwe was even more compelling. After years of hard work, she is very happy with the finished product. “I started writing this book in ninth grade, so it has been just about nine years since then,” said Glewwe. “The plot just kind

of came along as I was writing it.” Her book was published this year by Viking Publishers, an offshoot of Penguin Publishing Company.

“Once I finished the first draft, I returned to it a few times in high school and college and revised it again and again,” said Glewwe.

“Sparkers” is a very imaginative book that incorporates magic and other lands, which can be difficult to achieve well and captivatingly.

When Glewwe was speaking about her book, her passion for fiction was evident. “It’s just fun to use my imagination, and to invent my own characters,” Glewwe said. As an up and coming writer herself, she was more than happy to talk to others who want to follow in her footsteps. “Advice? Just keep writing?

Artificial Turf Coming to Pamela Isabel Thompson staff writer

“ The new field will be coming in late October

Pamela Park will be renovating their fields to create an artificial turf field. The new field will be coming in late October or early November.

Along with the new turf there will be new parking lot renovations, paved trails, and improvements to the park shelter building. The field will be mainly used for football, lacrosse, and soccer, although it is an open field, and anyone can use it when there are not scheduled practices.

Pamela has frequently had many issues with flooding; the conditions at Pamela were often slippery and muddy because of the rainfall.

Sometimes the fields are even unplayable because of the terrible conditions. “Our games used to get cancelled because the fields were so soggy that our soccer balls would get stuck in the mud,” said Eva Anderson, an Edina varsity soccer player. Often parents and coaches submitted complaints to the parks and recreation board of Edina because of too many cancelled games and practices.

The artificial turf fields are often considered to be bad for the environment, but what people don’t know is that it is very beneficial cost and environment wise.

“The field will be better for the environment because it doesn’t need to be mowed, irrigated, or fertilized, saving thousands of dollars annually,” said Parks and Recreation Director

Ann Kattreh. The water that is normally collected on the field which causes the bad playing conditions will be collected underneath the field, then drained. This creates better conditions to practice sports on, muddy fields will no longer be a problem.

The entire Pamela park project will cost approximately $2,777,000. Though the cost seems expensive, it will actually pay off. The fields will be played on regularly, and the new parking lots will create more space, and a safer driving environment. Artificial turfs tend to last ten to twelve years which differs depending on how often it is used.

“There are also other costly fees that add onto the field such as regular maintenance including cleaning and stain removal, brushing, aerating, raking, sweeping, and the addition of infill,” wrote Kattreh in the Pamela Parks recommendation letter that addressed the turf issue.

“Artificial turf field has been installed on hundreds and hundreds of fields worldwide to ensure proper safety and athlete cushion,” said Kattreh.

Artificial turf is an ideal playing field for athletes because of the consistent surface to play on. The field doesn’t affect how the athletes are running or affect a ball by bouncing on uneven surface.

“I love playing on artificial turf fields, they’re flatter, and they drain quickly making it easy for us to play,” said Anderson.

Conflict Over Bike Trail in Edina’s Backyards

Presently, bikers must walk their bikes over this bridge that crosses Nine Mile Creek.

When finished, the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail will be a path that runs from Hopkins into Edina and Richfield. It will be a nature-based trail experience while having the convenience of being connected to regional trails. “It would be a really pretty trail to bike,” said Edina High School sophomore Jessica Dryden. As of now, the trail is set to be built around 2015-2016.

The trail would span about 15.3 miles upon completion. The Edina segment will run along Nine Mile Creek, through the wetlands of Edina, as well as the backyards of many Edina families. Joe Pfefferle, a sophomore at EHS, has a house on the creek. “It would be a fun addition to the neighborhood, but I do believe it would be invading of our privacy,” said Pfefferle.

He isn’t alone in his worry about privacy. The idea of the trail hasn’t been welcomed by everyone, especially those who live on the creek. Pam and Harvey Johnson, who also own a house on Nine Mile Creek, have been huge advocates against the building of the trail. “It’s a natural wilderness area. Kind of the last spot in Edina,” said Pam. The trail was originally planned to be at grade but later on, due to the fact that the trail runs through wetlands, needed to be put above floodplain. “So basically the people along the creek here are looking at something that is elevated like six feet off the ground... six feet up is going to be where you can wave at the bikers as they go by,” said Harvey.

The project is no longer Edina’s, as Three Rivers Park District has control of the project now, and there are no longer public meetings available. “We just wanted to get our views heard. We had about 800 people [sign a petition], but they completely ignored that,” said Harvey. Despite this, both Pam and Harvey agree that Edina does need more convenient biking. “I understand the want for biking, feasible biking, but in these sectors where it comes within fifteen feet of a person’s deck, it seems like it could go on roads for a period of time,” said Pam.

[on] the campaign level,” said Estrem. Their campaign has involved everything from hearing student testimony from Stephan to organizing over 200 people to stand in support of the project at multiple Edina City Council meetings.

“This type of project is backwards from any other construction project,” said Estrem.

As an affordable housing project, the 66 West Apartments had to undergo all necessary government approval before construction could start, or even before they could start raising money.

While there was some pushback, especially from the medical community over concerns of bringing a housing project into Edina’s Planned Unit Development area (PUD) that had been focused on mainly medical facilities, the project passed the Edina City Council unanimously.

“We have the resources to provide support that would help them short and long-term,” said Stephan. On Sept. 2, 2014, the Edina City Council gave the go ahead to a new affordable housing project that will be located on West Street 66th in Edina. The project sponsored by the Beacon Interfaith Housing collaborative will offer homeless youth (aged around eighteen to twenty-one years old) a place to live at a subsidized cost, and a chance to work on school, a career, or even attend Edina High School. Currently, the 66 West Beacon Apartments are expected to be finished sometime around 2020.

“This is not a homeless shelter,” said Beacon’s Director of New Projects Anne Mavity. The 66 West Apartments (which will take the place of an old TCF Bank) will be just that, apartments. Anyone wanting one of the roughly four hundred square foot units will have to undergo an application process.

The main difference is that unlike regular apartments, the price will be subsidized to a highly affordable cost, and Beacon will offer services through the apartment to help tenants get a fresh start. The tenants will be living without a guardian, although there will be twenty-four hour security.

A housing project in affluent Edina may seem surprising, but “a lot of people don’t know that homelessness in an issue in our community,” said EHS senior Mara Stephan.

Stephan has been supporting the construction

of the 66 West Apartments for about a year and a half through St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Homeless youth in Edina may be hard to spot because most of them are “couch hopping,” said St. Stephen’s Youth Minister Adam Estrem. While they may not always be on the streets, they are living out of backpacks, trying to find a friend who will take them in for the night.

teacher in the history of the world, I am so glad I changed careers,” said Nimmo. She landed a job here at EHS as a social studies teacher. Nimmo recalls that her most memorable part of being a student at Edina was playing for the Girls’ Tennis and Track teams. When asked about the styles almost four decades ago, Nimmo commented about lots of sweaters and turtlenecks. “It really was not a good look,” said Nimmo.

Mr. Cullison Another alumnus is Mr. Cullison, the new AP Economics teacher. Cullison graduated in 1996, but came back to teach at EHS because of the great teachers he had as a student. His

Risha Bhattacharjee has recently joined the Edina Debate Team as the the new Junior Varsity Debate coach. She has moved here from Texas, a fact that is evident to her students when she talks. “I like the way she says y’all in daily sentences,” said sophomore Megan Shannahan.

Bhattacharjee has an extensive background with debate.

“I debated at Coppell High School in Dallas, Texas for four years, then debated at the University of Texas at Austin for five years. I coached at a high school in Austin for a few years as well,” said Bhattacharjee. She is also currently teaching debate at the University of Minnesota.

Besides coaching debate, Bhattacharjee is attending medical school.

Her busy schedule hasn’t kept her from coaching though. “I’ve tried to move on from debate many times to focus on becoming a doctor, but I just haven’t been able to do it. The community is amazing, and I love working with highschoolers.”

The competition season begins at the end of September.

“We’re starting to reach The new Debate coach Risha Bhattacharjee. crunch time in terms of preparation,” said Bhattacharjee. Practice consists of two hour practices twice a week.

“She makes us do speed drills, reading cards backwards which is insanely hard, but super fun,” said Shannahan.

Risha has the team focus both on practicing debate and developing research. “She really knows how to help people improve,” said sophomore Maggie Wells, another student of Bhattacharjee’s.

Risha has high hopes for her group of eight students this year. “This group of debaters shows a lot of promise, and I know that they have great careers ahead of them,” said Bhattacharjee. Yet her main goal isn’t winning.

“My goal is to make sure that these debaters develop into mature, confident young men and women. Debate is about a lot more than just winning and losing at tournaments.

It’s also a wonderful way to help people become effective communicators and problem-solvers in all aspects of life,” said Bhattacharjee.

Changes in Law Enforcement

New EHS Police Liason David Boosalis welcomes students to stop by his office.

The first thing a student notices after walking into new Edina High School Police Liaison David Boosalis’ room is the jar of candy on his desk and the ear to ear smile on his face. He’s not scary and intimidating; he is actually extremely inviting, defying all “cop” stereotypes. It is easy to tell he is excited to try something new and enthusiastic about working with kids.

“I grew up in Edina and went to Hopkins High School. I did the Junior Police program as a teenager, so working with kids and teaching the Junior Police feels like I’m giving back,” said Boosalis.

Giving back is an understatement, after all, since law enforcement is the epitome of giving back. Boosalis has practically done it all, everything from traffic stops to SWAT calls.

“The SWAT calls are really exciting. We

do anything from narcotic warrants to armed people barged up in houses,” said Boosalis.

The SWAT team covers the whole Southwest Metro, Minnetonka to Edina and everything in between. On top of working with the SWAT team, Boosalis has been with the Edina Police Department for nine years, and he was with the Eden Prairie Police Department before that. It is apparent Boosalis has a lot of notches under his belt when it comes to field experience, but he is equally entrenched in teaching experience.

“Before I came here, I administered a lot of field training with new officers. Anything from traffic stop protocols to firearm training,” said Boosalis.

Going from SWAT calls to an affluent suburban high school is a big change.

However, it isn’t necessarily easier.

“I’m excited to start working here, it will be a little challenging to go from working on the street to working [at a high school]. I just have

Some students think of their teachers as grumpy old people with a strange fashion sense that they could never relate to.

All of Edina High School’s teachers were students at one point, however, and some of them even swaggered through the same halls that we do here at Edina.

Ms. Nimmo Ms. Nimmo graduated from EHS in 1977, and was a corporate lawyer until she went back to school to get her teaching license. “While I was definitely the oldest student

dream is to do a commencement speech which is like, “being homecoming king for a teacher,” said Cullison. His most memorable experience about being a student at EHS was that he met his future wife here. He recalls that upon leaving EHS, he quickly missed the friends who went in all different directions after high school.

“This [was] before Facebook. For all I knew, they had become astronauts or supervillains,” said Cullison. The equivalent of texting in class for Cullison was writing lengthy notes to friends. “I miss exchanging full length letters with my friends everyday. As grown-ups, we’re too busy or don’t seem to have as much to say,” said Cullison.

Teachers may not be as different as we think. Sure, they’re older, and don’t always dress in the coolest way, but they were our age once, too, and they get it.

“I have stuck to teaching high school because we can converse as equals. High schoolers are fun to be around, but it isn’t always fun to be a high schooler,” said Cullison. “[High schoolers] are smart, and ‘with it’, and up for anything. Your enthusiasm for life is infectious and you have an insatiable curiosity and ‘can do’ attitude,” said Nimmo.

“What I will say is that your teachers are on to you even though you don’t think we are. We were your age once.

Things don’t change that much!” she added.

The main adjustment is that he is busy all the time. A police liaison differs from a security guard in a lot of ways. Both can detain and discipline students, but a liaison has a lot more on their plate of disciplinary action.

“The majority of my job is being a resource to the office, to the security guards, and to students. I give advice on how to react to the variety of situations that happen at school.

In a lot of ways I’m a counselor just like the social workers. Students can, and I encourage them to, come talk to me about things that are troubling them if I can help,” said Boosalis.

Boosalis’ attitude really fits his new position. He isn’t intimidating and is excited to get to know you.

If one looks past the uniform, they may find a great role model.

If you have a problem and need some advice, it is encouraged you stop by his office, you might even get some candy.

EHS Welcomes New Counselors Spanish Teacher With the New School Year, Edina High School is Seeing the Introduction of Two New Counselors

Before becoming a counselor to EHS students with the last names A-Co, Angela Kieffer taught Child Psychology, advised Student Council, and organized May Term. This year, Kieffer is leaving that behind to take on the role of a counselor.

Kieffer actually received her school counseling degree four years ago but wanted to wait for the perfect job opportunity to open up. Kieffer loves Edina especially, and she didn’t want to work anywhere else. When this opportunity opened up, she immediately took it.

Kieffer appreciates that EHS students are willing to have relationships with teachers and counselors, which makes her job much easier.

“I think EHS students are comfortable with themselves,” she said.

High school can be very demanding, but Kieffer has advice for students who might be struggling. “Find the balance of school, and whatever [you] like to do outside of school,” she said.

In terms of looking at colleges, Kieffer notes that the search should be the students’ and not the parents’. She also advises students to work hard because, as she puts it, it will definitely pay off.

An Edina High School alum, Taylor Johnson was actually a teacher in South Korea before he became a counselor at EHS. Taking the place of Jeanne Brown who left to become a counselor in Southern California, Johnson works with seniors with the last names Cp-Fo, and juniors and sophomores with the last names Cp-Han. “I found a lot of students coming to me with questions beyond academics,” Johnson said about how he got into counseling.

“I love working with students and families beyond the classroom.”

Johnson said that he appreciates that at Edina students have a myriad of opportunities that they may not have access to elsewhere.

“There definitely is more of a focus on your future here,” he said.

Johnson encourages students and parents to open up to him about everything from high school classes to college. “Don’t be afraid to talk to your counselor,” he said.

For students starting their college search, Johnson advises to start looking junior year. He also emphasizes that the experience should be fun and not a chore.

Adiós la clase de Español, Jennifer Carter is starting her 15th year at Edina High School in a new position, Dean of Students. Room 134 used to be her home at the high school as an AP Spanish 5 teacher, but her recent change in status moved her to the main office. In her new role, she is in charge of student attendance and serves as the school’s Assessment Aoordinator. She is considered a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), so technically her old title still stands.

“It’s sad that I won’t be having her as a teacher again this year, but this is a great opportunity for her. She connects well with students, and is well liked,” said junior Thomas Cattelin.

Carter has connected with many different students through teaching, coaching, and through multiple leadership programs she has served in over the years: May Term, The Intervention Committee, The World Language Department, and Spirit Squad.

As a cheer coach since 2000 and the director since 2009, Carter has seen the program grow and interacted with hundreds of high school students.

“My students always made me laugh and enjoy my job. Being in my classroom and working with students is what I will miss the most in this new role,” said Carter.

While Carter will miss her old title she is excited about the new position.

“It is an honor to be part of the EHS administrative team,” she said.

Sophomore Brock Boltmann

As a sophomore, you always envision yourself being the oldest in the school. What sports will you play? Will you have the same friends? Where will you go to college?

Many questions run through a sophomores head as they try to figure out their high school years to come.

Wanting to know how current sophomores expect to see themselves as seniors, three sophomores were interviewed: Meredith Stotts, Sophie Crosby, and Brock Boltmann.

Sophomore Meredith Stotts believes she will be playing soccer as a senior and is looking forward to not being the youngest in the school.

She hasn’t thought about college much but due to the influence of one of her old favorite television shows, “Zoey 101,” her dream school is Pepperdine.

“From what I’ve heard senior year seems like a blast,” she said.

Sophie Crosby, a current sophomore at EHS, runs cross country and track as well as nordic skiing.

Crosby hopes to still be doing all three as a senior.

She is looking forward to senior year because it will be a nice break after having hard sophomore and junior years.

As a senior Sophie hopes to be “more smart and independent.”

Her senior goal is “to have a good idea about college and her future.”

Sophomore Brock Boltmann plays baseball, hockey, and football and hopes to bring a football title to Edina as a senior.

He’s excited to be a senior due to the fact that they get “freedom and have priority over things.” Right now his ideas about college include University of Minnesota and Michigan State.

Overall the idea of being the oldest, having the most freedom and getting to be the “big dogs” in the school sounds exciting to all the underclassmen.

Should the Ninth Grade Move to EHS? Head-to-Head Yes, It Creates More Opportunities For Freshmen Rebecca Edgington staff writer

Any high school graduate understands the hardship of applying for college, and the stress of wondering if you have been accepted. Any Edina High School graduate understands the hardship of having to prove your worth to a school, having only been given three years to join clubs, participate in sports, theater, take AP classes, and try to achieve the best grades possible, considering that many other students have four years in high school.

Several freshmen from Valley View Middle School were asked their opinions on whether or not Edina High School should house students ninth through twelfth grade instead of tenth through twelfth. “I think we are definitely at a disadvantage, I could have

four years to prepare for and be in AP courses at the high school, but instead I only have three, and the only AP class offered [to freshmen] in the middle school is AP Government,” said Megan Langser, a VVMS freshman.

“We also only get three Homecomings, or three Sweethearts and Sadies, when everyone else gets four. We are missing out on lots of events,” said David Arndt, another VVMS student.

Many students also wish that they could participate in clubs and activities at the high school. “If I were given the chance, I would love to be in lots of clubs, the high school offers a lot more than the middle school,” said Michael Laib.

Greta Morton expressed how excited she is for theater next year.

“It would be great to have an extra year to work towards getting a lead role as an upperclassman.”

No, Freshmen Aren’t Ready For High School

It’s happening. The freshmeat are coming. We spent four years in middle school, why shouldn’t they? I am not in favor of the freshmen coming to Edina High School because there is limited space, they are not mature enough for EHS traditions, and they are not prepared for difficult classes.

“The high school is more fun when it’s just three grades and we all become closer. Four grades would be way too overwhelming.” said senior Brett Wagner.

As a new member of EHS, the expectations for class work and the maturity level are greater than those of Valley View and South View.

The ninth graders are much too young and irresponsible to study at the high school.

“Being a part of the high school may be hard for freshmen. There are too many people, and they’re not mature enough.” said junior Kelly Good.

The difficulty of the classes may be a struggle for some. Edina has upheld a strong reputation of doing well on test score. It would be unfortunate to see some of the scores drop due to teens receiving negative test results in harder classes.

“They’re just not ready yet,” said sophomore Ellen O’Neill.

I loved experiencing my first Homecoming dance this year as a sophomore, with freshmen at the dances they just wouldn’t be the same.

It’s intimidating to be in a crowded room full of upperclassmen. Edina’s Homecoming, Sadies, and Sweetheart dances are a upheld tradition at EHS. “They are not mature enough to understand the values behind the tradition of Homecoming.” said sophomore Owen Smalley.

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors alike love attending dances. Their experiences should not be ruined by freshmen that don’t fully understand what it really means to be a part of these gatherings.

Lastly, EHS is a small building, already crammed with 2,000 students.

The building simply couldn’t hold 600 more freshmen students. Without expanding the high school, class sizes would increase, making it difficult for students to learn.

“Just imagine the circle hallway. It’s already so full it would be cramped!” said Good.

Anyone who has been in that hallway during passing time can testify that adding more students would stop all means of traffic flow.

Whether we like it or not, the freshmen are coming.

The district has approved the arrival of the incoming freshmen, yet the district has not yet determined the timeline, because it will take several years.

We just have to find a way to prepare for the short pubescent teens in the beloved EHS hallways.

“I think it would be weird to have freshmen here. We’ve always had that barrier between them being in middle school and us being in high school. I think it would just be something that we would have to adjust to over time,” said sophomore Alexandra Joas.

Struggles of Being Tall Girl and a Small Girl Jessica Mixon staff writer

Of the tall girls, at 5’11”, I am average.

I feel slightly bad for complaining my abundance of inches when some of my basketball friends are much taller than I am.

So to be fair, I consulted some of my fellow tall friends to ask if they had anything to contribute. However, I have also experienced all of these struggles.

People try to make me feel bad for complaining about being tall by saying things like, “you’re so lucky, I wish I was as tall as you!” No. Stop it. Just no. I promise you do not wish you are as tall as me. You might think you want to be tall like me, but really you want to be average.

“How’s the weather up there?” jokes. I’m sorry, but the 6 inches between my head and

yours have zero effect on the temperature.

All jeans are cropped. I’m not even kidding.

I don’t own one pair of jeans that goes to the proper length. It would be really nice to be able to wear my jeans to the proper length for once.

People tell me to buy the “tall” version of jeans, but it just doesn’t work for me.

Being in the center of every photo. I tower above all of my friends in every single picture of us, so they just stick me in the middle so the group looks symmetrical. I can attempt the awkward crouch, but then I just look slouchy.

So the options are towering giant, or slouchy homeless person.

With the average American man being 5’9”, I’m taller than most guys. Not to mention that in high school, guys are not done growing.

Some of the nicest guys are short, which makes me feel like I’m threatening their manliness.

about, if I bring up a guy, the first question out of everyone’s mouth is, “Is he taller than you?”

Why do you care if he’s taller than me or not?

People think that it is socially unacceptable to date a guy that is shorter than you, which is completely false.

I have front of the classroom guilt. I feel so bad for the people who sit behind when teachers put me in the front of the class. I try to duck to get out of the way, but it’s uncomfortable and then I can’t see. There is no solution other than asking to sit in the back of the classroom, which makes me look like a slacker. This also applies to concerts or situations in which everyone has to stand, where I accidentally block innocent people’s views, and then feel obligated to duck down or stand in the back. As much as I struggle with being too tall, somehow at the same time I feel like I’m in competition with other girls for who

Wearing a dress at school when I can’t cross my legs is sketchy because I can’t sit like the classy lady that I am, which causes people to wonder why my fellow classmates are being flashed a view of my spandex.

Being tall has made me into an epic sloucher. I hate feeling like I am two feet above my friends when I’m walking or sitting next to them, so I slouch to feel more on their level. I am going to be the hunchback of Notre Dame when I’m old. My posture is terrible.

One word: hugs. Do I even need an explanation? Girls who have never experienced this awkward phenomenon are so lucky. Hugging people who are shorter than you is extremely complicated. In a very short amount of time I have to analyze and decide where to put my arms and head to make the situation as not awkward as possible.

makes you more comfortable with talking to and being around significant others. Even if they don’t work out, you receive dating experience for later in your life,” said Meghan Hennessy, a freshman at The University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Being comfortable around others is important for future relationships and is a social skill that can lead to success throughout your lifetime.

Additionally, relationships provide meaning in your life. “They motivate you to shower and go to school instead of staying home and watching Netflix,” said senior Emily Born.

Some relationships can create awkward situations like having someone you’re dating accidentally favorite one of your tweets from 129 weeks ago or you could end up getting stuck in the middle of two exes in a packed school bus. Dealing with all the sticky situations that high school relationships involve help you handle future awkwardness.

Plus, “You have a date to all the dances,” said sophomore Peter Rundquist.

High school relationships may be looked at as pointless because they eventually come to an end, but don’t all good things come to an end? Just because something will eventually end doesn’t mean not to do it.

Isolating yourself from a good time to avoid potential pain later doesn’t seem pleasurable. Sure, break-ups are hard on both sides, but the average person goes through multiple break-ups in their lifetime. That is multiple ice cream filled, stuffed animal hugging nights you won’t ever get back.

In conclusion, high school relationships are a good thing because not only do they prepare you for future relationships but, they also give you social skills that lead to an easier lifestyle.

Technology in the School Worth the Hassle?

Nichole Schultz news editor Emma Sedarski, senior, sits in her first hour Enriched Sociology class. The sound of frustrated clicking overwhelms the classroom as Moodle crashes for the 800th time today.

“We wasted the first 20 minutes of class trying to reach the worksheet that was apparently online but no one, not even the teacher, had gained access,” said Sedarski.

math textbook is available online. So we end up carrying three textbooks, a device, notebooks, pens, folders, pencils, and gum.

The new eLearning initiative at Edina High School has caused a flood of students and staff logging onto Moodle at the same time. While there are many positive outcomes of having the classroom be online it comes with a lot of frustration.

With technology in the classroom comes distraction.

I often find myself scrolling through Anthropologie instead of listening to the new math lesson. It is so

easy to get distracted and off task when the entire Internet is sitting right in front of you.

Taking notes on your device has proven to be less effective in really learning the material. This is because when you write something down you end up paraphrasing it rather than copying it down word for word. When taking notes on a device it is easy to just type in exactly what the teacher is saying, which is thorough but it does not make you process the information.

A study done by researchers at Princeton and at University of California Los Angeles observed the

effectiveness of taking notes on a computer versus taking hand written notes. The study involved taking a pop quiz after given 10 minutes to review their notes. The students who took their notes handwritten scored exceptionally higher on the conceptual questions compared to those who typed their notes.

While devices in the classroom seem like a good idea, I find the execution flawed. I am hoping that EHS has a brighter future plan for technology’s sake. Until then, plan to spend most of your time hitting the refresh button on your Chromebook.

How to Fix School Lunch Options Farhia Osman features editor Walking in the first day of school, you wonder why the lunches are so different. This is the first year of the Edina School District’s new partnership with Chartwells. Replacing Sodexo, Chartwells now supplies our lunches. The main objective for Chartwells is locally grown, healthy food. However, that doesn’t mean better.

First, there should be more vegetarian options. Though the school has tried with offering more fruits and packaged salads, this is not enough. I recommend a salad bar where students can pick the amount and type of salad they would like. This would provide more variety and appeal to vegetarians. Also, there are some vegans here at the school, so we should try to accommodate to their needs as well.

Second, there should be more fresh food. One idea could be homemade foods instead of frozen and packaged meals. Or

a school garden. Countryside just had its first harvest and garden tasting. Imagine if a school as big as Edina High School started its own garden or greenhouse.

This could decrease meal costs for the school and provide the students locally grown food.

Edina tries to satisfy the students with healthy and tasty food options, leading to many changes. However, these problems might be able to be solved faster with the new Student Wellness Committee made up of EHS students. Meeting with members of the administration, representatives from Chartwells, and parents of students from all grade levels, they bring up problems with the lunch system and together everyone tries to fix it together. The committee represents the wants and needs of all Edina students.

With this in mind, if you have any grievances or ideas about fixing the lunch program, the Student Wellness Committee is available to work towards addressing it.

Sometimes it’s hard to eat healthy and still eat out. Luckily, the restaurant Agra Culture recently opened in the 50th and France area of Edina, making it easier than ever to stay healthy. With a creed to make healthy food accessible to everyone, this new fast-casual restaurant offers the perfect opportunity to get healthy, no matter how busy your schedule is.

Agra Culture has an excellent ambience as well. The restaurant makes you excited about eating healthy. Their menu gives you all the information you need to make sure your meal is tailored to your lifestyle.

Agra Culture has already started to make an impression on kids at Edina High School. “I like how it gives you so many healthy options on the menu to choose from,” said senior Jenny Jirsa. “Being healthy is very important to me because I want to be a registered dietician. But I think every restaurant has a way of being unhealthy. Like at Agra you can get a meat, but then you can also get sauce that isn’t as healthy.

But if you choose the right thing it’s healthy!”

She recommends the quinoa salad with chicken.

It’s so hard to eat healthy when you’re rushing around. Especially when it’s so easy to just stop by McDonalds for a quick bite. Fast casual places like Agra Culture make it quick and easy to stay healthy.

During collaborative Wednesday, seniors have the ability to leave campus for various reasons. Some choose to go out to eat, or to take a power nap at home. Others play pick up sports. I took the challenge of doing all these activities in just one two hour collaborative time.

This is the journey of how I managed to fit the most activities into one, jam packed collab time.

Some of the best summer activities stop too soon because of the burden of school starting. Frisbee golfing is a popular, laidback sport that seems to cease to exist once school starts. So my first stop on my collab journey was the Rosland Park nine hole municipal disc golf course. Designed in 2002 as a senior May Term project, Rosland Park course is just a five minute drive from EHS and lets you clear your mind of everything school related while getting some good exercise strolling around the course.

After a solid round of disc golf, I got a little hungry. I decided to get some food at one of the numerous food options around Edina.

I stopped at Five Guys, to enjoy a world class hamburger, while only having to drive three minutes to get there. A meal away from the normal school lunch can go a long way and make you feel more energized for the rest of the day.

Collab was only half over at this point so I still had so much time for more activities! I decided to take my abundance of leftover french fries and head over to a friend’s house to play a little FIFA 14.

Nothing can take your mind off school than a little Real Madrid vs.

Barcelona showdown.

I was feeling like burning a couple of the calories I stacked on from Five Guys, so I headed over to Normandale Park to play a little pickup basketball with the local ballers (my dad and his coworkers).

I worked up a little bit of sweat during the game, so I went home and took a quick shower before heading back to school.

I had a fun-filled collaborative time with many thrilling activities.

Like it or not, cold weather is on its way. For many, this also means a change in wardrobe, and consequently a dip into the bank account.

Unless you get thrifty, that is.

Thrift shopping allows you to discover unique items and deals that aren’t available at larger retailers. “You could compare it to searching for hidden gems! There’s always something out there that’s bound to be just what I’m looking for,” said senior Ellie Schlaefer.

Some thrift stores have the reputation of being dumping grounds for unwanted, ratty hand-me-downs but in fact, many thrift stores sell high-quality name-brand and vintage items, without the sticker shock that comes from shopping at full price.

There are a variety of thrift stores and consignment shops located in the Twin Cities. Notable mentions include Turn Style Consignment, Plato’s Closet, Opitz, Nu Look, Arc’s Value Village, Goodwill and Fashion Avenue. Depending on where you go, you can find everything from $0.15 notebooks to $500 luxury fur coats.

Senior Sahra Sabri’s favorite consignment store is Fashion Avenue because it sells items from all price ranges and brands. “It’s one of the most high fashion consignment shops around, it’s in a very nice area, and is well organized which makes the experience better,” said Sabri.

Junior Casey Robinson loves the high end consignment store June on Lyndale. “Last year I bought a Tiffany & Co necklace for $100, and Frye boots for about $40! Those are the best things I have found.”

Cheaper stores like Arc and Goodwill are also fantastic places to buy pieces to build a creative Halloween costume that will stand out from the barrage of store-bought costumes.

One of senior Kelly Brant’s favorite finds was when she and her sister found costumes for a theme party. “My sister and I went to a 90s-themed party and dressed up like the Olsen twins and both got our costumes for under $10,” she said.

Next time you and your friends are incredibly bored on a Saturday, instead of spending your entire paycheck on a headband from Anthropologie or a treat from Yogurt Lab, stumble into some thrift stores and see what treasures you can uncover.

Much Ado About Centennial Lakes John Osler news editor Croquet, fishing, paddle boating, cultural performances, motor boating, Norwegian sledding, lawn bowling, movie night in the summer, ice skating in the winter, a weekly farmers market.

Obviously Centennial Lakes Park has a lot to offer. So why does it have a reputation as Edina’s “hidden park”?

Edina junior Paige Briggs, the youngest and one of the newest workers at Centennial Lakes Park, agreed with the idea that the park was a little bit hidden.

“A lot of people say that they don’t know what’s there,” she said. “A lot of people come

and are like ‘Wow! I didn’t even know this existed!’”

Joey Reese, another junior employed at Centennial Lakes, said that it might be the location of the park that keeps it out of the public eye.

“I guess it’s just maybe because we’re on the other side of the lake. A lot of people know the park… just as a walking park. They don’t know about the put-put as well,” he said.

But the idea that the park is tucked away

might end up being a myth. In a poll of 102 students and staff members at EHS, 90 said they had been to the twenty four acre park at one point. That’s 88% of the student and staff body, many of whom aren’t even Edina residents.

“It’s a really fun place to work,” said Reese.

“I love being outside while I’m [working].”

with prizes for the first three best scores, worst score, and the best dressed contestant.

And instead of employee of the month, they double the appreciation with bi-monthly employee of the fortnight.

Centennial Lakes Park has also been the site of some truly bizarre accidents. Most notably, Briggs remembered an employee who once crashed a golf cart while Reese reported once falling into the lake himself.

“I fell in the lake once,” Reese said. “I had to get a boat that was stuck out in the middle of the water and I took a paddle boat out to get it… I just lost my balance and fell in.”

One golfer is memorialized on a plaque for once getting twenty-two stitches after breaking his club.

Centennial Lakes Park is home to a number of local events. In the month of September alone there’s an art festival and four farmers markets.

Centennial Lakes is also part of Edina Promenade, a winding bicycle/pedestrian trail that goes through the Southdale area.

Centennial Lakes has a lot to offer.

Although it might not be as hidden as some people think, all of the activities available definitely aren’t in the mindset of all Edina residents and are worth consideration for a place to have a good time.

Taking advantage of the DECAfé is one of the many perks of attending Edina High School.

EHS students look forward to buying candy, cookies, donuts.

But this year, students were surprised with the drastic food changes in the cafeteria as well as the DECAfé.

“We were forced to change the DECAfe menu at the same time that the cafeteria food changed. It was part of a healthy eating initiative by the school,” said senior DECA Officer Katelyn Linton.

Although many Edina High School students

are disappointed that they will not be able to buy candy during school, there are other savory options offered throughout the day.

“Some of our most popular additions have been ICE sodas, beef jerky, goldfish, and kettle corn,” said Linton. The DECAfé is trying to add food that is both tasty and good for you.

“We are trying to add more healthy options.

We know students like cookies, but they like yogurt and pistachios, too,” said DECA Advisor Ryan Gallagher.

However, many of the students are upset.

“I used to buy M&M’s, Twix, Kit Kats, or any other kind of candy bar. I think it really sucks that they don’t sell any candy during the school day,”said senior Raouf Hamed Abeidi .

Soccer Popularity Soaring Erik Lindquist opinion editor The Fifa World Cup last summer had an especially significant effect on the Edina’s perception of the sport. This could be because of Jermaine Jones’ hair, Tim Howard’s beard, or just how well Team USA played overall.

Although summer has a lot of sports to watch, the World Cup dominated Edina’s attention. ¨This summer soccer was the main sport I followed. I bought jerseys, watched games that I would never have watched before, and spent hours at the park playing the game “World

especially compared to football and hockey, but this season it started to stand out. If you had gone to a varsity soccer game last year, the stands would be pretty barren with the only spectators being parents, a few super fans, and other soccer players. This year is different.

Now, there are a fair amount of spectators.

There are almost three times more superfans and a full student section. ¨Over the past four years I’ve been on the team, there haven’t been many fans but this season there seems to be more and more that come. People enjoy watching the games, and having the fans out there is one of the best parts about [high school] soccer,¨ said Boy’s Soccer Captain Tanner Morrison, who has been on the squad since freshman year.

Another factor to the abundancy of fans is how well the varsity team did last year, tying for third in state. This year there are about 75 superfans, and every player has about three. If that isn’t a perfect example of how soccer has grown I don’t know what is.

“It’s pretty cool how so many girls were interested in doing it, and all the guys love the treats,¨ said Morrison.

Soccer is stereotyped as a less aggressive sport. Primarily because it is a non-contact sport with lots of flopping and short shorts.

USA’s Clint Dempsey sure challenged the stereotype when he played through a broken nose against Ghana in the group stage.

“The World Cup increased my interest in soccer way more! I think that interest has carried into the fall. It definitely affected my decision to be a soccer manager,” said senior Andy Benjamin, one of the Girls’ Varsity team managers.

The World Cup is not the end of soccer. There are still countless leagues and games of fútbal to watch. ¨I can’t wait to watch the EURO 2016, and I will be following the qualifiers over the next few years,” said Karos

Senior Max Ellingson shows off his mountain biking skills.

Austin Buyse staff writer The Edina Mountain Biking Team will be starting their 3rd season this year. The club was originally created for high schoolers and middle schoolers who wanted to try riding trails.

Right now team is mainly geared towards mountain biking but they are also looking to cater to road cyclists and cyclocross riders (where the rider must carry his/her bike through difficult terrain) in the near future.

The team is fairly new and is always open to new riders no matter what skill levels they possess.

“I had actually been mountain biking for a couple years before [knowing about the club] and when I heard about it I jumped on right

away,” said senior Max Ellingson, one of the team’s captains.

“As long as you go to Edina Public Schools, you can join the team. You could be a die hard cyclist or someone who just heard about the sport,” said Ellingson.

The team has doubled in size since last season and currently has many female riders.

The team bikes every Tuesday and Thursday and either Saturday or Sunday on the weekends.

Mountain biking for many is not just a sport but also a hobby.

“I mountain bike because it is a healthy sport you can do for the rest of your life…

I can just hop on my bike and forget about how many hours of homework I have or other stressful things like that,” said Ellingson.

Ben Boone is a senior at Edina High School. He is on the basketball team and a captain on the Varsity Football team.

Zephyrus: How did your family influence your aspirations to be an athlete?

Ben Boone: My dad, believe it or not, was actually a good athlete in high school. He played quarterback and all of my uncles played sports too. My brother played really football and basketball as well.

Zephyrus: Who did you look up to on the team?

B.B.: I looked up to Mark Handberg… He helped me to gain confidence as a sophomore.

Zephyrus: What is your favorite memory from time with teammates?

B.B.: My sophomore year playing at the Metrodome or beating Eden Prairie.

Zephyrus: How do basketball and football differ for you?

B.B.: I like basketball a lot more just because I’ve been

playing that longer… I would say that I’m better at football though.

Zephyrus: What types of responsibilities do you carry as a senior captain?

B.B.: Well, I think I have to really watch how I react if there’s a bad call, I need to pull the team together if we have a bad drive on offense and just let them know there’s a lot more possessions we will have throughout the game.

Zephyrus: Do you feel that you collaborate well with coaches, managers, teammates, and fellow captains?

B.B.: Yes. This year we tried to make it more of a family type feeling for everyone.... coaches, managers, players. It doesn’t matter if you’re a freshman or a varsity starter, we want everyone to feel apart of the team.

Zephyrus: Do you plan to keep playing football/basketball throughout college and do you plan to play pro one day?

B.B.: I’m sure I’ll end up playing football somewhere…

Hopefully a Division 2 here in Minnesota… I think everyone aspires to be a professional athlete but the chances aren’t very good for that.
