SENIOR PARTING WORDS

Simone Vaillancourt outgoing print editor
ntering high school, I thought I had everything figured out. I had a plan for my life, and I was determined to stick to it. For a long time, I neglected opportunities because I didn’t believe that they would help me find what I wanted–a straightforward path through high school, college, and my career. But it’s important to remember that in any stage of life, whether high school or beyond, your experience will never be linear. You’ll fall, you’ll get up, and you’ll learn–but you have to be willing. Jumping into the unknown is never easy and the journey is never predictable, but the opportunities are infinite. Watching your life change over
time can be difficult to do. Willingly embracing those changes is even harder. However, I’d encourage you to make the most of high school, college, and beyond by welcoming change with open arms. Linearity is boring, and what fun would we lose by not being able to reflect on our past selves, or dream about who we will be in the future? To those who are heading for the unknown: I encourage you to embrace your setbacks and celebrate your successes. Most of all, remember that your failures don’t define you, and that no matter what path you take, you can control how you react to it and change for the better. I wish you all the best of luck and happiness on your totally zigzagged, totally unpredictable, totally spectacular journeys.

hen I joined Zephyrus three years ago, I didn’t know anything about journalism. As time went on and my role in the class grew, so did the responsibilities and stressors. As a high achieving student at Edina High School, I have been under immense pressure for years. The pressure to maintain a near-perfect GPA, to participate and thrive in activities, and to have an active social life have been constants for me throughout middle and high school. However, near the end of junior year, it reached a tipping point. I was taking several AP classes,
juggling three times a week, leading clubs at school, remaining active in my church’s youth group, and playing multiple musical instruments. Being told time after time that my junior year grades were the most important for college applications, I was under the false assumption that only A’s were acceptable. I hear that mental health issues are rising in teenagers all the time. Until last year, it never occurred to me that I was falling down the same holes as everyone else, and was, therefore, setting myself up for a breakdown. Eventually, I developed severe anxiety which has affected me for over a year. For a long time, I hid my struggles from my family and friends. I thought that showing weakness would be conceding: that my quest to get into a good college would end in failure if I admitted a struggle. Looking back, this sounds ridiculous. I have been getting help for my mental health for a while now and am confidently able to say that I am doing “pretty well” and mean it. Over the last year, I have prioritized certain activities and stopped participating in the rest. I quit playing the piano, band class, and leading my church youth Morgan Sheehy outgoing managing editor

ongrats class of 2019! You have finally made it through the four years of our lives that felt like they would never end. Made it through the endless extracurriculars and all-nighters cramming for exams. Suffered through early mornings sophomore year for the infamous “zero hour” and persevered through classes that taught seemingly useless material you will never encounter again. You even made it through the high school drama you thought for sure destroyed your life and the heartbreak that made you not want to walk the school’s halls ever again. These moments are almost all in the past now, and I can tell that you are beyond excited to leave the place where everyone “knows who you are.” You look forward to the independence and fresh start that comes with what you choose to do next. The future is beyond exciting, but take a moment to think about what you are leaving behind. You have passed your last sports game in the student section. The next time you attend an Edina sports game you will be watching in a different atmosphere, the dreaded general admission/parent section. You will never attend another high school dance, shop with your high school girlfriends for the perfect dress that makes you feel absolutely beautiful, or make your move on the girl you’ve been crushing on by casually asking her to dance. You will no longer run like a madman to your car at 3:16 and pray
group. Out of all of my activities, I made the conscious choice to stay in Zephyrus and make it my priority because it was the only one of my activities that made me happy. Yes, getting good grades is important. Participating in activities is also important. But what needs to be highest on your priority list is taking care of yourself. Whether you are a senior in high school like me or an elementary school student just starting your educational path, there will be times when there is a choice between what is right for you and what is asked of you from society. I made the wrong choice time and time again last year, studying late into the night, not eating well, and scheduling way too many activities. So please, learn from my mistakes. Take the road less traveled by in this age: take care of yourself. It will make all the difference. I’ll leave you with this: asking for help is not the same as admitting weakness. If you are struggling with your mental health, please do not keep it to yourself. Your family and friends will not disappoint you.
that you don’t get into a car accident on your way out of the parking lot. Check Twitter constantly to figure out when the next riot in the Commons is going to go down. Watch the hip hop dance team absolutely crush their routine during your lunch period. High-five Stretch during passing time, wave at Tony while he is directing traffic, listen to Dean Marshall’s legendary poems every Wednesday during first hour reminding you to sign up for FLEX. In just a few weeks you will walk across a stage, accept your diploma, and look around at the people you grew up with, most of whom you will never see again. Friends who were at one point such an integral part of you life, taught you the hardest lessons, and shaped you into who you are now. The class acquaintance you always partnered up with in lab. That one kid who always lapped everyone in the mile during PE. All going in different directions, on separate paths that may never cross again. Perhaps you find comfort in leaving the familiarity of your life as you know it, but just know that these moments are your last. When the fall comes, everything will be different. Embrace the new, but appreciate the time you have left. Spend time with your friends, family, and pets. Savor every homemade meal and night in your own bed. Say thank you to the people who were there for you when all you wanted to do was give up. Take these last few weeks to reflect on the good and the bad of the past four years. The future will come soon enough.

If Eva Hadjiyanis is known for anything, it’s walking to the pubs room either extremely early or embarrassingly late with a book in hand. If she’s not editing articles or being a friendly face for underclassmen to approach, Eva is studying for one of her various advanced courses that confuse everyone else on staff. “I’m a very big nerd and very proud of it. I have 250 digits of pi memorized.” Eva is also a huge Harry Potter fan and a captain at Jugheads. Whether it be writing controversial articles, laying out the most inventive pages (her favorite being last year’s gun control spread), or editing articles for hours on end, Eva has played a huge role on Zephyrus for the past three years. Eva has loved being on staff, and she considers it an integral part of her life. One of her favorite memories was being told that she made it onto staff. “I had no idea what was going on and all of a sudden there was a bunch of people in my room yelling that I made Zephyrus and then we went out for breakfast at Perkins. It was nice to feel like I had a community in the high school because I had no idea what I was doing.” Next year, Eva will attend Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Although Eva is currently undecided, she is interested in a wide variety of majors ranging from psychology and politics to physics and astrology, and cannot wait to see what activities she finds. The Zephyrus fam will miss her dearly and can’t wait to see what the future holds for Eva. Energetic, enthusiastic, and environmentally focused, CC Orth is a triple threat on the Zephyrus staff, and when you add in working both on the writing and art staff, this 5’1.5” senior turns into a force of nature. CC came into Zephyrus with deep family ties, joining both her sister Christina and cousin Isabel in the pubs room shenanigans. In terms of extracurriculars, CC is always busy. In addition to being half of the all star Visual Editor team, she also volunteers weekly as a Fairview Southdale Hospital Captain, President of Backpack Tutors, proud member & fan of the Edina Girls’ Swim & Dive Team, Link Crew Leader, and a leader on Project Earth, which she says is “an awesome club that everyone should join.” A bubbly personality and full of smiles, CC is always looking for new friends (both humans & pets) and suggests ice cream as bribery. Her love for ice cream is so strong that she will be attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison, just for their Daily Scoop ice cream. She hopes to either major in biology with an emphasis on healthcare or major in ecology with an emphasis on sustainability. The Zeph family is excited to see where CC’s passions take her.
Senior Isha Konety, outgoing News Beat Lead, host of the 2019 Zephyrus party (“Zarty”), and future Tarheel as an attendee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has greatly enjoyed her time on Zephyrus. She joined Zephyrus a year later than her peers, offically starting her junior year. Isha says she appreciates the people she got to know during her time on the Zephyrus staff, as strengthening those friendships and getting to know people she wouldn’t have talked to otherwise (she noted fellow Zeph alum Margaret Sullivan in particular) was one of the best parts about being on Zephyrus. She’s also grateful for the chance to get involved in school news and had fun writing a bunch of interesting articles and pushing the paper to the best it could possibly be as a member of the Editorial Board. She says her most iconic moment on staff was when the rest of the Editorial Board slept over at her house the night before new staff wakeups in 2018. Zephyrus appreciates Isha’s contributions to the publication, and she will be missed next year.
A titan of competitive Irish dance, Girls’ Ultimate Frisbee and photography, Margaret Sullivan has done it all. Serving as one of Zephyrus’ photographers and rockstar Visual Editors, Margaret is soon venturing off to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She plans on either studying biology or psychology. Margaret is a constant source of laughter in the pubs room and often contributes to Zephyrus with her upbeat personality and helpful nature. As she puts it herself, “I'm kind of insane,” but this is merely a showcase of her quirky sense of humor, something that she brings to the Zephyrus staff daily. As a summer nanny of four boys, Margaret will have to utilize her easygoing characteristics and strong will. Margaret is a very people-oriented person and her favorite staff memory is the Zephyrus sleepover, when the seniors bonded over t-shirt making, a lack of sleep, and prepping to welcome new staff members. Both the Zephyrus writing and art staff will miss Margaret, but know that she will only continue to thrive and accomplish great things.

SENIORS
Anjali Aralikar, the outgoing Studentlife Beat Lead, will be taking her unique experience on Zephyrus to Wellesley College where she will continue to develop her passions. Not only did Anjali thrive on Zephyrus, but she was also an avid member of Model UN, Captain of the Speech and Worldquest teams, and a member of Concert Orchestra and the Girls’ Badminton Team. Through her variety of experiences at EHS, Aralikar will take away her ability to put her heart into everything she does, “I learned to stick with activities and how to do what I love… you aren't going to be happy if you do things for the resume, I want to do things to spark joy in my life,” Aralikar said. The memories she made in Zephyrus will remain with her through college and as she goes into the rest of her life. She will take away her improved writing abilities, the skills she gained which made her more approachable and outgoing, and, most importantly, the connections that she made with other staff members, which she will cherish upon leaving EHS.
Finishing her final year at Edina High School, senior Lily Jones is also wrapping up her duties as the Zephyrus Editor-inChief. During her three years at EHS, Lily has accumulated valuable memories from her participation in the newspaper, as captain of Model United Nations, Debate, Speech, and as a “JV Ultimate [Frisbee] super star.” After recounting her Zephyrus experience, she states that her best memory would be earlier this year when “for the first time in Zephyrus’ recent history, we won many awards at the Minnesota State Conference. It was super satisfying to watch the staff get recognized for the hard work that we put in.” She also remembers fondly the many Zartys, the sleepover at Isha’s house, and her frequent lively editorial disagreements with Emma. Along with the happy memories, Lily notes, “I wish I had appreciated the time that I had in Zephyrus early on, since I was interviewing many interesting people and learning so much about the community that I live in.” Post-high school, she will be attending Middlebury College in Vermont and intends to major in international relations or philosophy. She plans to join her school newspaper, and Lily will definitely use her skills gained through Zephyrus in the near future. As Lily bids the 2018-2019 year good-bye, she leaves some parting words of wisdom: “Sometimes, working in student journalism can seem mundane or futile, but I know from experience that the work that student journalists do can not only mitigate divisiveness but also bring light to injustices that happen in the school community. I hope that Zephyrus continues this legacy of bringing about truth and transparency that society often lacks.”
SENIORS Brooke Sheehy is known for her incredibly in-depth articles. Over the last three years, she has built her reputation as an investigative writer, beginning with her piece about the origins of Senior Women apparel. Her favorite Zephyrus memory was her first. One morning towards the end of her freshman year, it was 6:00 a.m. and she was fast asleep. Suddenly, she was woken up to a small mob of junior staff members announcing that she had made Zephyrus. This was the start of her favorite part of Zephyrus: friendships between both upperclassmen and underclassmen and the tight knit community overall. Brooke is grateful to Zephyrus for helping to develop her strong writing and communication skills. This was further refined in her senior position as the first ever Administrative Coordinator on the Editorial Board. Her tenure on Zephyrus is coming to a close as she heads off to attend the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Leaving without any regrets, Brooke will be missed dearly by the Zeph staff!
Emma Bailey is Zephyrus’ outgoing Online Editor. No matter where you are in the Zephyrus classroom, you can distinctly make out Emma's voice. Her favorite memory was waking up the new staff members over the past few years as well as hanging out with coeditor Lily Jones in class. The most important lesson Emma wants to impart to next year’s student body is that if you work hard and put quality effort into your craft, good things will come as a result of the passion you put in, but you also need to have some fun while doing it. Emma is excited to leave high school and start to learn about more specialized material in college while having the independence to make her own decisions. However, she will miss the tight knit community at Edina High School, where she knows everybody. Next year, Emma will be attending McGill University, where she plans to double major in International Development and Anthropology with a minor in Linguistics and a focus on Sustainable Development.
As the Managing Editor, Morgan Sheehy was in charge of advertisements, public relations, and bringing snacks for the staff on Friday. Her most memorable experience on Zephyrus was participating in wake-ups: an annual breakfast party that returning Zephyrus staff members host for incoming staff. Her proudest Zephyrus achievement was making it onto staff in a year where there were 60 applicants, and only ten were accepted. Morgan not only excels inside the classroom, but also excels in her extracurriculars. Outside of school, she is a captain of the robotics team, and is involved in DECA and cross country. Overall, Morgan is hard working, and puts her best effort into everything she does. After high school, Morgan will be attending the United States Naval Academy, where she will receive a college education along with military training. After graduating from the Naval Academy, she will be serving as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. On behalf of the Zephyrus staff, we wish Morgan the best of luck in college, and know she’ll be successful wherever she goes.
Greyson Mize is the outgoing Sports and Activities Beat Lead along with the only senior that can write humor articles. He has made an impact on Zephyrus with his ability to create a positive atmosphere for other staff members as well as contributing his eloquent writing abilities to the paper. Next year, Greyson will instead be thriving at Western Washington University. Aside from Zephyrus, Greyson also created a space at GSA. He participated in a club where people could freely express themselves and learn about others. Additionally, he was a member of Mock Trial, which gave him the essential skills that he uses in his everyday life. Within Zephyrus, he met many lifelong friends and is sad to see them all go, but is excited about future Zeph reunions. Zephyrus quickly became an important aspect of his life that he will never forget. Greyson will be missed next year, and the staff wishes him the best in college!
Simone Vaillancourt is known around the Zephyrus pubs room for her love of coffee and impressive knowledge of everything InDesign-related. Known as the Print Editor and the glue that holds the page editors together, Simone’s favorite Zephyrus memory from her three years on staff was waking up new staff members, especially when she drove to pick them up early in the morning. Her favorite part of high school has been getting to experience it all with her friends, including those she made on the Zephyrus staff. Outside of the pubs room, Simone spends most of her time involved with the (world championship winning!) EHS Robotics team. But when she has time to spare, she enjoys showing off her visual design skills even further by painting, enjoying a nice book, or spending time with her adorable dogs, June and Pippin. In the fall, Simone will be heading off to college at George Washington University in D.C. She’s excited to study business and entrepreneurship, in order to get a head start on her own business. Always impressed by her responsibility and leadership, our Zephyrus family is sad to see her go, but excited to see what she does next!

Reserved and reliable, Matthew Egger is a fixture on the Zephyrus staff. Renowned for his reading, his column “Egger’s Book of the Month” is beloved throughout the EHS community. Reviews written by Matthew are always thoughtful and contemplative, and his recommendations are righteous. Outside of his studies, Matthew spent most of his time working towards the rank of Eagle Scout and training hard while serving as a co-captain for the Edina Nordic ski team, something he says he will miss. “It's the most fun thing during the winter, having something to do when it gets dark out super, early every day. Having a really nice group of people to hang out with is great,” Matthew says. Next year, Matthew will study international relations and Chinese at Durham University, aided by the years of Chinese he has taken at EHS. In conjunction with his degree, Matthew also expects to study in China or Taiwan at some point. Although he’ll miss the Minnesota winters, Matthew is excited for this new opportunity. “I'm really looking forward to experiencing completely new things in a different culture.”
