APP STATE @ HICKORY CAMPUS HICKORY, NORTH CAROLINA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The client of this project was Appalachian State University as they are expanding and designing their new campus in Hickory, North Carolina. This project included designing classrooms, a lounge, and a daycare area for continuing education students.

CONCEPT Throughout the design of the new App State at Hickory Campus the focus revolved around continuing education and non-traditional students. With that in mind keeping an innovative and biophilic space was a priority through large open spaces and neutral warm tones. By taking the unique approach and avoiding classic school colors this leaves students with a more subtle feeling rather than traditional college students may feel walking onto a college campus.

ALMALTAS HOTEL & RESTAURANT BANGKOK, THAILAND PROJECT DESCRIPTION As an Interior Designer, I have been contracted by Thai Hotelier to design a biophilic hotel that encompasses a sustainable guest and employee experience. Throughout this design I will create a reception and lounge, restaurant , guest suites and a sun room lounge for all guests to enjoy while keeping biophilic design practices in mind.

In Thailand, symbolism plays a role in their culture. Found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Thailand and Southeast Asia you can find the Golden Rain Tree also known as cassia fistula is a tree that displays hanging clusters of flowers called Ratchaphruek, Thailand’s national flower. In Thai it is called the “royal tree” because the trees have soft, yellow flowers that appear to be golden raindrops falling. They obtain 5 raindrop shaped petals and this is a common form through Thailand that you will see in many of the choices put into the overall hotel design. With slightly drooping branches where the bark is gray, mottled and moderately rough. This linear form found in the tree has been incorporated into lighting, furniture and finishes in hotel and restaurant considerations. In Thailand, the color yellow coincides with the moon and the Hindu God Chandra. The color also shows respect and gratitude towards their king in multiple ways. To the Thai people, yellow also symbolizes glory, harmony, and unity. Throughout the hotel and restaurant the color yellow represents the blooming of the Ratchaphruek flowers and the wood tones representing the tree bark.

P9: Material Connection with Nature One such study demonstrated that a difference in wood ratio on the walls of an interior space led to different physiological responses (Tsunetsugu, Miyazaki & Sato, 2007). The researchers observed that a room with a moderate ratio of wood (i.e., 45% coverage), with a more subjective “comfortable” feeling, exhibited significant decreases in diastolic blood pressure and significant increases in pulse rate, whereas a decrease in brain activity was observed in large ratios. Lots of wood tones and materials are used in the space through wrapped columns, baseboards, tabletops and ceiling materials which give different types of wood grains and textures.

RESEARCH & PROCESS WELL STANDARDS L05: Daylight Design Strategies Building design and interior layout have a substantial impact on the amount of daylight in an indoor space. Indoor daylight access should be accounted for at all stages of building planning from architectural and facade design to interior design and layout. Indoor daylight planning should be coupled with glare control strategies, such as integrating shading for all windows 70% of all workstations are within 25 ft of transparent envelope glazing. Visible light transmittance (VLT) is greater than 40%. SUN ROOM

GUEST SUITES

Since circadian response of humans to light is dependent on the light that enters the eye, factors such as spectral properties of the light, brightness levels, duration, and timing of exposure should be considered. The light levels must be achieved on the vertical plane, at the eye level of the occupant to simulate the light entering the eye of the user. The light levels are dimmable. If automated lighting is used, it is automatically dimmed after 8:00 pm.

APPlique AFFORDABLE & SUSTAINABLE HOUSING BOONE, NORTH CAROLINA PROJECT DESCRIPTION Over the Course of a semester I was able to work with three other majors at Appalachian State University and the Watuaga County Community Housing Trust to design affordable and sustainable singe family homes to address the housing crisis in Boone. The WCHT Trust sells or rents the housing it develops to low-income community members. For home sales, the Trust only sells the home on the land, not the land itself. The purchase price is more affordable because the homeowner is only buying the house, not the land. The homeowners sign a 99-year land lease with the Trust to provide long-term stability for their housing. When a homeowner and their family moves, the home is sold back to the Trust, or to another low-income homeowner. Trust homeowners build home equity that appreciates from improvements they make.

CONCEPT THE APPALACHIAN (APP-uh-latch-un) QUILT Throughout the Appalachian region the patchwork quilt is a staple and provides a sense of comfort and warmth to all who own one. These quilts can be handmade or passed down from generation to generation and are often constructed from premade squares, tied into a tightly knit collective. Despite each square being unique, the beauty of the quilt comes from the combines variations. These quilts are custom to the owner and can be bought and sold locally.

Tally was used to track the carbon footprint of our project over the course of the building lifetime. The analysis revealed that the total embodied Global Warming Potential is 111,459 kgCO2eq. This metric will give a more holistic view of the environmental impact the building has over the course of its lifetime than focusing solely on carbon. The scope of the analysis is considered a cradle-to-cradle approach. The embodied impact is measured from raw material acquisition to end-of-life disposal. The analysis revealed that the vast majority of environmental impact comes from the end of life. However, the panelized system offers the potential to easily replace damaged sections, thus reducing the likelihood that a total house demolition is ever required.

THE SITE

BLOCK F BLOCK A/D

Every resident of the affordable housing neighborhood deserves a personal, thoughtfully designed home. The neighborhood utilizes recognizable and popular materials in the region. The siding features wood grain popular with luxury cabins and the metal roof is reminiscent of sturdy barns. These details will make residents feel more connected to their homes. The steep shed roof will help with snow loads while the insulated ceiling will keep the conditioned space to a minimum. Intentional roof lines and window placements capture the natural beauty of the Appalachian region without sacrificing thermal performance. Views will be prioritized showcasing the mountainous landscape and river near the property. Furthermore, a rainwater collection system and appropriate foundation drainage will handle the excess runoff of the sloped site.

A tight envelope, ample insulation, and efficient HVAC design will allow all demands to be met by on-site renewable energy. Building materiaks will be selected on the basis of reducing embodied carbon. Furthernore, site development will be kept to a minimum to preseve the natural ecosystem.

EQUITABILITY

A mixed-income housing model will ensure that our homes remain equitable in light of the socio-economic gap in Boone, NC. This goal will be met through modular construction allowing affordable workforce housing and universal design considerations.

The building’s thermal envelope features continuous insulation with overlap from the ceiling and floor to ensure that there are no physical points that act as a thermal bridge. Furthermore, the electrical system is sized appropriately with considerations for appliance and lighting efficiencies.

THE SYSTEMS

The Watuaga Community Housing Trust (WCHT) is a non-profit organization focused on community-led housing development, who want to give everyday Wataugans the power to create and manage the affordable housing they deserve. WCHT and it’s stakeholders develop and manage permanent, safe, and affordable housing to promote financial well-being and economic security for low to moderate income community members. In Boone, NC there is a affordable housing crisis currently going on. The WCHT Trust sells or rents the housing it develops to low-income community members.
