Music Notes by Ashley Sosis: “A Tale of Two Tunes” Starting this Sunday, I thought I would share some “Hymn Stories” using some of my favorite sources. I must say that next week’s “Amazing Grace” is a little easier to give background for than this week’s “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken”. In fact, talking about this hymn may ruin it a little for you. It is understandable to filter out hymns for regular use if there is an issue with text (not scriptural, etc). However, Hymn 522, our opening hymn, has an issue with its tune. In 1791, Joseph Haydn composed the tune as the Austrian national anthem, hence the title AUSTRIA. In 1922, Germany adopted the tune (but not the text, of course) for their national anthem. In 1946, (in response to World War II) Austria declared a new national anthem with a tune by Mozart. Many churches, like Austria, also shy away from using AUSTRIA because they feel that the melody is a reminder of the suffering caused by WWII. The other tune in the Hymnal 1982 for this text is ABBOT’S LEIGH (#523). ABBOT’S LEIGH was written in 1941 by Cyril Vincent Taylor while he was the head of religious broadcasts at the wartime BBC headquarters in Bristol, England for the specific purpose of “canning” AUSTRIA. ABBOT’S LEIGH was the hymn-tune equivalent of “freedom fries”! So do we sing AUSTRIA or ABBOT’S LEIGH? We sing both, actually. The AUSTRIA tune has been paired with the Newton text, without stigma, since its first publication in London in 1889 in the Primitive Methodist Hymnal. It has also appeared in Anglican hymnals since roughly that same time. Obviously, I won’t program this hymn anywhere near a national veteran’s holiday, but it stays in our (surprisingly large) cache of hymns we know how to sing well. ABBOT’S LEIGH is a brilliantly written tune and it is very fun to sing. I really enjoy hymn #379’s pairing of that tune with Timothy Rees’s “God is Love, let heaven adore him” text, today’s closing hymn. Do you enjoy reading about text and tune origins? Call for Summer Music Dear Friends, After Trinity Sunday (May 31st), the St. Augustine choir will be on their summer recess until mid-August (August 16th). During this time, we welcome vocal or instrumental soloists or small groups of musicians to present music at the 11am service as a prelude, an offertory anthem, a communion anthem, or a postlude. Pianists are especially invited to present solo repertoire that invites prayer. Please contact me if you would like to work on something with me to present in church or if you have any suggestions for summer music. I love accompanying and working collaboratively with other musicians, so it is a blessing to work within a congregation with so many that are gifted in music!.

Join us for a day of ecumenical sharing and fellowship on June 13th at Trinity Church in Myrtle Beach (3000 N. Kings Highway) from 9:00am till 3:00pm. The theme of the day is: How to be a Disciple-making Man. This will be an opportunity to meet other men - just like you - who are learning to be discipled and to make disciples of Jesus, as they live their ordinary lives day by day. We will hear what is working for others and what does not. It will be an open and grace filled day. There will be many voices. There will be only what the Lord provides. During this time, we welcome vocal or instrumental soloists to present music at the 11am service as a prelude, an offertory anthem, a communion anthem, or a postlude. I invite you to contact me if you would like to work on something with me to present in church or if you have any suggestions. I love accompanying and working collaboratively with other musicians so I feel blessed to work within a congregation with so many that are gifted in music! A few of my favorite collaborations I have seen over the years didn’t involve my help at all because they were facilitated by musical families: a father/son instrumental duet, a mother/daughter vocal duet, and a large musical family ringing handbells together! 19
Sacred piano music is also a very welcome offering during this time. Or, pianists may prepare a simple (“manuals only”) piece of organ repertoire on either of our beautiful pipe organs. Our music director's program notes, music selections and holiday programs from every service since August 2013 have been uploaded onto the website: https://sites.google.com/site/trinitychurchmusicnotes/. You can use this huge cache of information to look something up that you liked from a service you attended at Trinity, get caught up if you missed a service by thumbing through an old program, or share the link with a friend to help them get an overview of the great music that our music program provides. Grief Support Group: Class resumes on August 6th. This will be a 4 week class, wrapping up on August 27th. It will begin at 6 pm and will run 1 to 1 ½ hours. The set of 4 books may be purchased for $10 and are available from Dan Farley. Baptismal Dates: The next Baptism date in 2015 is Nov. 22nd. A Bible study also meets every Thursday morning at 7:30 am at Croissants at 38th. Pastoral Care at Trinity: It is of greatest importance that you contact the church if you are ill or in the hospital. "In case of illness, the Minister of the Congregation is to be notified." Book of Common Prayer (BCP) p. 453. Current privacy laws do not allow the hospital to contact the clergy or to release names of patients. The only way that the church will know of your hospitalization is if you, or a friend or family member, call the Parish Office to alert us. Revised Parish Songbook to be Launched Rally Day 2015! The 1995 blue-and-white Trinity Parish Songbook is a great resource for our community. However, we don’t use it as often as we used to because it needs some updating. Because this songbook belongs to you, please take a moment to give some feedback on what you like and what you don’t like about our current parish songbook and what you need in the new edition. Copies of the current parish songbook are on the volunteer desk in the hallway for your reference. Feel free to borrow one to take one home to help you think about the answers to these questions. Please respond with requests to Ashley Sosis via e-mail: music.trinity.church@gmail.com or drop a note titled “PARISH SONGBOOK” in the hymn request box.
