Music Notes by Ashley Sosis: The Youth Choir and Children’s choirs just this past week underwent end-of-the-year assessments for RSCM (Royal School of Church Music) medals. The medals are worn over the children’s robes when they sing in church. Each medal’s ribbon color indicates a level or grade of music theory understanding ranging from White, Light Blue, Dark Blue, Yellow, to Red, much like belt colors in Karate. If you see a youth choir or children’s choir student at church please congratulate them for their hard work this year. Not just with our young students, but throughout our music program, there was a lot of music literacy learning going on in the choir room this year. One of the first things a chorister (of any age) learns is how to count through a measure of music. Once you advance through how to count different time signatures, you realize that one thing remains constant while you’re counting (usually)-- the pulse of the music. That is very clear in this Sunday’s music selections, many of which are based on the chant, “Veni, Creator Spiritus”, which does not so much follow a clear metered rhythmic pattern as much as it has a clear pulse which continues through many changes of meter. Today’s communion anthem is written in 6/4 4/2 meter, which means that the musicians must count “123456,1and2and3and4and”, just to sing or ring it properly. We hope you find the results to be a beautiful, prayerful, flowing line of Gregorian chant. If you are interested in learning more about music or music reading, please come see me about joining a Trinity music group during the 2014-2015 season.

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: People:
The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. A brief Silence.
Almighty God, who on this day didst open the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of thy Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Acts 2: 1-21 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. FIRST LESSON
5
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
PSALM
Psalm 104: 25-37
Read responsively by whole verse. 25. O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. 27. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. 6
Page 736, BCP
28. All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. 29. You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. 31. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all His works. 33. He looks at the earth and it trembles; * He touches the mountains and they smoke. 34. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being. 35. May these words of mine please Him; * I will rejoice in the Lord. 36. Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, * and the wicked be no more. 37. Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!
SECOND LESSON
1 Corinthians: 12: 1-13
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, 7
but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. .

John 20: 19-23
GOSPEL Reader: People:
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Rev. Iain Boyd Rector
NICENE CREED All:
BCP. pg. 327 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. At the conclusion of the Creed, please KNEEL as you are able.

Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Lord, hear our prayer. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. Lord, hear our prayer. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life; we pray for Dan & Sue Farley as he trains to be a deacon, for Donnie McDaniels, our new Associate Rector, Coastal Fellowship, and for Campus Outreach. Lord, hear our prayer. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. Lord, hear our prayer. Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. Lord, hear our prayer. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, hear our prayer. 11

And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate.

CONFESSION OF SIN Celebrant:
Celebrant: People:
BCP. 331
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"In case of illness, the Minister of the Congregation is to be notified." Book of Common Prayer (BCP) p. 453. Current privacy laws do not allow the hospital to contact the clergy or to release names of patients. The only way that the church will know of your hospitalization is if you, or a friend or family member, call the Parish Office to alert us. Also please notify us if a family member or a friend is in need of prayer or a pastoral call. Thank you for helping us help you. In case of an emergency, please call 1843-343-1777 and one of the clergy will respond. Please add this number to your cell phones. Please Wear Your Name Tag!: Trinity is blessed by having beautiful name tags that have been crossstitched and laminated for long life. Indeed, they will last a very long time if they just sit in the rack, never being handled or clipped onto clothing! New members find it very helpful to put names with faces, and visitors welcome such an effort on their behalf. As Trinity attracts more new families and individuals, it is most important that all parishioners wear their nametags each Sunday. If you do not have one yet, or have lost or misplaced your nametag, please notify Elise Reed. 20
