Music Notes by Ashley Sosis: Every time I play Suite Gothique, I am reminded of a friend of mine from high school who said, (rather out of the blue) “I am afraid of Gothic architecture.” This friend had been to Paris and was thinking in particular of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. I remember this vividly because what he said made no sense to me. Was he confusing awe with fear? Translate this to organ repertoire and the idea becomes something that is more widely accepted: “Loud organ music reminds me of Halloween.” I would like to propose to you that this thought is equally as strange. I have said before that the three aims of sacred music is “for prayer, in praise, or to portray a biblical passage.” That is why Suite Gothique, in its four contrasting movements, for me has a direct connection to Acts 2:1-21, today’s New Testament reading. The Toccata to me portrays the rush of wind and tongues of flame in Acts 2:2-3. The Priere, (though the name translates, “Prayer to our Lady”) to me could be a meditation on the sweetness of Acts 2:21, “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. The largesse of the first movement and joy of second together could underscore the rest of Peter’s proclamation, Acts 2:14-20. So I challenge you to equate music that, like Gothic architecture, is a little scary with our great God and His powerful Spirit. Happy Pentecost!

FIRST LESSON

Ezekiel 37: 1-14

[1] The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. [2] And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. [3] And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” [4] Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. [5] Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. [6] And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” [7] So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. [8] And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. [9] Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” [10] So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. [11] Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ [12] Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 4

[13]And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. [14] And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.

The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PSALM

Psalm 104: 25-37

Page 736, BCP

Read responsively by whole verse. 25. O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. 27. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. 28. All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. 29. You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. 31. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all His works. 33. He looks at the earth and it trembles; * He touches the mountains and they smoke. 34. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being. 5

35. May these words of mine please Him; * I will rejoice in the Lord. 36. Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, * and the wicked be no more. 37. Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!

SECOND LESSON

Acts 2:1-21

[1] When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. [2] And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. [3] And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. [5] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. [6] And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. [7] And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? [8] And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? [9] Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, [11] both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” [12] And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” [13] But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” [14] But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. [15] For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. [16] But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: [17] “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; [18] even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. [19] And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; [20] the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. [21] And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

GOSPEL Reader: People:

John 15:26-27; 16: 4b-15 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

[26] “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. [27] And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. [4] But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. [5] But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ [6] But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. [7] Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. [8] And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: [9] concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; [10] concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; [11] concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. [12] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. [13] When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. [14] He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. [15] All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ. HYMN

SERMON

Donnie McDaniel Associate Rector

NICENE CREED BCP. pg. 327 All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. People:

Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Lord, hear our prayer. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, especially Mark, our Bishop, and our priests, Iain and Donnie, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. Lord, hear our prayer. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life; we pray especially for Dan & Sue Farley as he trains to be a deacon. Lord, hear our prayer. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land especially President Obama, Governor Haley, and Mayor Rhodes, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. We also pray for the City of Myrtle Beach, Staff, Police, Firemen, EMS, and Council. Lord, hear our prayer. Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. Lord, hear our prayer. 9

And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, hear our prayer. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Lord, hear our prayer. Loving Father, you heard the voice of the Israelites in Egypt, and you saw their affliction, and oppression; so now hear the groans of your children as they suffer in your persecuted Church throughout the world. Comfort and strengthen them through your Holy Spirit, let them be witnesses that their oppressors might see and turn to you, and hasten to bring them out of their suffering with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate.

Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN

10

BCP. 331

Celebrant:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Celebrant: People:

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against

us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. COMFORTABLE WORDS GREETING OF PEACE Celebrant: People:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The Rev. Iain Boyd, Rector

Please call or email me so I will have sufficient lessons for all. Thanks, Susan Shanks 497-2570 or susanburdettshanks.ss@gmail.com Thursday Night Women’s Bible Study: A Thursday night women's Bible study , Behold Your God, studies on the attributes of God, will be offered this Summer beginning June 4 through August 27. They are always looking for fresh ideas for our visitor table. CALL FOR SUMMER MUSIC: Dear Friends, after Trinity Sunday (May 31st), the St. Augustine choir will be on their summer recess until mid-August (August 16th). During this time, we welcome vocal or instrumental soloists to present music at the 11am service as a prelude, an offertory anthem, a communion anthem, or a postlude. I invite you to contact me if you would like to work on something with me to present in church or if you have any suggestions. I love accompanying and working collaboratively with other musicians so I feel blessed to work within a congregation with so many that are gifted in music! A few of my favorite collaborations I have seen over the years didn’t involve my help at all because they were facilitated by musical families: a father/son instrumental duet, a mother/daughter vocal duet, and a large musical family ringing handbells together! Sacred piano music is also a very welcome offering during this time. Or, pianists may prepare a simple (“manuals only”) piece of organ repertoire on either of our beautiful pipe organs. The 1887 Centenary Organ and the 2013 Hood Organ are both joys to play and there’s plenty of room in the world for new organists! Happy Summer! Ashley Sosis music.trinity.church@gmail.com Lay Eucharistic Ministers: We are looking to add to our current list of Lay Eucharistic Ministers to bring communion to our homebound parishioners. This important and spiritually rewarding ministry requires very little training and most visits are once a month. If you’re interested or have questions please contact Dan Farley by calling the church office. Baby hats and blankets: I want to thank everyone who has been so gracious with their time and talent in providing the underserved newborn babies in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties with hats and blankets! Please continue your good works as you feel led. There is now a box in the parlor that the blankets and hats are to be placed in. For questions please feel free to call me at 843-449-3558. Trinity Church Music Notes, Programs and Music Selections Archived Online! Our music director's program notes, music selections and holiday programs from every service since August 2013 have been uploaded onto the website: https://sites.google.com/site/trinitychurchmusicnotes/. You can also find this link on Trinity's website, at the bottom of the music program page. You can use this huge cache of information to look something up that you liked from a service you attended at Trinity, get caught up if you missed a service by thumbing through an old program, or share the link with a friend to help them get an overview of the great music that our music program provides. Grief Support Group: Class resumes in the fall. Look for more information to come. Baptismal Dates: The next Baptism dates in 2015 are May 24th and Nov. 22nd. If you are interested in having your child baptized, please contact Melissa Ciavarella. Gluten free wafers: Gluten free wafers are available for those who have a gluten intolerance. Please let the priest know prior to the start of the service you are attending. Bible Study Fellowship: The study on Revelation will begin in September. Please feel free to invite friends and neighbors. Contact Susan Payne for more information at 843-390-2399 or sbp1230@aol.com Men's Bible Studies Offered: A Bible study, Gospel Centered Life, meets every Wednesday morning from 7am-8am in Gravely Hall. A Bible study also meets every Thursday morning at 7:30 am at Croissants at 38th. Pastoral Care at Trinity: It is of greatest importance that you contact the church if you are ill or in the hospital. "In case of illness, the Minister of the Congregation is to be notified." Book of Common Prayer (BCP) p. 453. Current privacy laws do not allow the hospital to contact the clergy or to release names of patients. The only way that the church will know of your hospitalization is if you, or a friend or family member, call the Parish Office to alert us. Also please notify us if a family member or a friend is in need of prayer or a pastoral call. Thank you for helping us help you. Please Wear Your Name Tag!: Trinity is blessed by having beautiful name tags that have been crossstitched and laminated for long life. Indeed, they will last a very long time if they just sit in the rack, never being handled or clipped onto clothing! New members find it very helpful to put names with faces, and visitors welcome such an effort on their behalf. As Trinity attracts more new families and individuals, it is most important that all parishioners wear their nametags each Sunday. If you do not have one yet, or have lost or misplaced your nametag, please contact Elise Reed at ereed811@aol.com.

Revised Parish Songbook to be Launched Rally Day 2015! The 1995 blue-and-white Trinity Parish Songbook is a great resource for our community. However, we don’t use it as often as we used to because it needs some updating. Because this songbook belongs to you, please take a moment to give some feedback on what you like and what you don’t like about our current parish songbook and what you need in the new edition. Copies of the current parish songbook are on the volunteer desk in the hallway for your reference. Feel free to borrow one to take one home to help you think about the answers to these questions. Please respond with requests to Ashley Sosis via e-mail: music.trinity.church@gmail.com or drop a note titled “PARISH SONGBOOK” in the hymn request box. The deadline for requests and suggestions is Tuesday, June 30 th. I would like to especially request some feedback from our youth and teen congregation members. Thank you! 20
