Why Morning Prayer? As the Reformation began to take root in England, Thomas Cranmer had a vision for a church where a deep connection to God in regular rhythms of prayer and Scripture reading was not only reserved for those cloistered away in the monasteries. So, he condensed the seven monastic prayer services into two and had these two services read daily in the church. A Church of England parishioner, then, attending morning and evening prayer services would not only regularly lift themselves, the church, and the English people up in prayer, but would hear the entirety of the Scriptures read every year in the church. Those with a longer history in the Anglican Tradition may remember a time, then, when Morning Prayer was the principle service in many churches with Holy Communion being reserved for once a month. It is not our desire to go back to that model of service, however we do not want you to lose the rich tapestry of our tradition. As we enjoy this service of Morning Prayer, there are three things I hope you begin to enjoy, appreciate, and be blessed by. 1. I hope you begin to gain an appreciation for some of the rich devotional content in the canticles and prayers we pray in Morning Prayer. I have long since absorbed much of this devotional language into my prayer life and it serves as a tool for my own communication with God reminding me of His grace and His glory. 2. I hope you appreciate the value of sitting under regular bible reading. As Charles Spurgeon reportedly has said, “A bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” 3. Morning Prayer is a great pattern for a personal devotional life. Feel free to take this bulletin home as a template for your own daily prayer time at home. Prayer Books can be bought in the book stall and Daily Office readings can be found on several sites online including www.esvbible.org. I hope that you are enriched by our time of prayer and study this morning! In Him, Iain 2

PROCESSIONAL HYMN OPENING SENTENCE

427, When morning gilds the skies LAUDES DOMINI

BCP. PG. 39

Officiant

Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Hebrews 9:24

CONFESSION OF SIN

BCP PG. 41

The Officiant says to the people

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear this holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

3

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant alone stands and says

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

THE INVITATORY PSALM

Sung by the Choir. Please be seated.

CHRIST OUR PASSOVER

Book of Common Prayer pg. 46 Music by: Will C. MacFarlane

Choir:

Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast Not with old leav’n, neither with the leav’n of malice and wickedness, But with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed to sin: but alive in God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen, is risen from the dead: and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death: by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

The Lessons LESSON I

Isaiah 26: 2-9, 19

Pew Bible pg. 586

[2] Open the gates, that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. [3] You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. [4] Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. [5] For he has humbled the inhabitants of the height, the lofty city. He lays it low, lays it low to the ground, casts it to the dust. [6] The foot tramples it, the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy. [7] The path of the righteous is level; you make level the way of the righteous. [8] In the path of your judgments, O LORD, we wait for you; your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul. [9] My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. [19] Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.

LESSON 2

1 John 3:1-10

Pew Bible pg. 1022

[1] See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. [2] Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. [3] And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. [4] Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. [5] You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. [6] No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. [7] Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. [8] Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. [9] No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. [10] By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Here ends the Lesson.

CANTICLE 7: WE PRAISE THEE

Te Deum laudamus Music by: Healey Willan (1880-1968)

Sung by the Choir.

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the heav’ns and all the powers therein. To Thee cherubim and seraphim continually do cry: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; heav’n and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise Thee. The noble army of martyrs praise Thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee: the Father of an infinite majesty; 9

Thine adorable, true, and only Son, also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst humble Thyself to be born of a virgin. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the kingdom of heav’n to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy saints, in glory everlasting.

LESSON 3

Luke 6:27-38

Pew Bible pg. 862

[27] “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. [29] To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. [30] Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. [31] And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. [32] “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. [35] But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. [36] Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. [37] “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; [38] give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Here ends the Lesson. 10 

SERMON THE APOSTLES’ CREED

The Rev. Iain Boyd Rector

BCP. PG. 53

Officiant and People together, all standing and chanting on one tone

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

BCP. PG. 173

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of thy people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calleth us each by name, and follow where he doth lead; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

COLLECT FOR SUNDAYS O God, who makest us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of thy Son our Lord: Grant us this day such blessing through our worship of thee, that the days to come may be spent in thy favor; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A COLLECT FOR THE RENEWAL OF LIFE O God, the King eternal, who dividest the day from the night and turnest the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep thy law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done thy will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night cometh, rejoice to give thee thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING

BCP. PG. 58

Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM

BCP. PG. 59

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

The Officiant concludes:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. -2 Corinthians 13:14

Book of Common Prayer (BCP) p. 453. Current privacy laws do not allow the hospital to contact the clergy or to release names of patients. The only way that the church will know of your hospitalization is if you, or a friend or family member, call the Parish Office to alert us. Also please notify us if a family member or a friend is in need of prayer or a pastoral call. Thank you for helping us help you. Please Wear Your Name Tag!: Trinity is blessed by having beautiful name tags that have been crossstitched and laminated for long life. Indeed, they will last a very long time if they just sit in the rack, never being handled or clipped onto clothing! New members find it very helpful to put names with faces, and visitors welcome such an effort on their behalf. As Trinity attracts more new families and individuals, it is most important that all parishioners wear their nametags each Sunday. If you do not have one yet, or have lost or misplaced your nametag, please contact Elise Reed at ereed811@aol.com.
