CHORAL MORNING PRAYER FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER April 24th , 2016 + 11:00am
Music Notes By: Ashley Sosis There is a mistake in this morning’s program. This mistake is one that I am making on purpose, so I feel confident about admitting it! Today’s Morning Prayer service includes an invitatory psalm (O Sing All Ye Lands), the Pascha nostrum (Christ our Passover) which may be used in place of an invitatory psalm, and one canticle (Canticle 18, A Song to the Lamb) instead of one invitatory psalm and two canticles. The Pascha nostrum is neither a psalm or a canticle. If we were to label the Pascha nostrum as if it were song lyrics or poetry, we would call it a Cento. A Cento is a work composed of verses taken from different sources, put forth in a new order. This cento uses 1 Corinthians 5:7-9, Romans 6:9-11, and 1 Corinthians 15:20-22; which have in common that they are all from letters of the Apostle Paul. Thomas Cranmer used the second and the third of these texts as anthems before Morning Prayer in the BCP 1549. In 1552, the two anthems, without the alleluia, were provided in place of the Venite for Morning Prayer on Easter Day. In 1621, the first anthem and the Gloria Patri were added. The first passage relates our salvation to the Jewish Passover; the second is drawn from Paul’s understanding of baptism as union with Christ in his death and resurrection; the third is taken from Paul’s contrast between Christ and Adam. As the themes are woven together in this cento, they create a rich and profound meditation on the church’s experience of the Risen Christ. Since the text of the Pascha Nostrum is all by the same author (Paul) and can be read beginning to end like a Canticle (a biblical song of praise) we are only bending the rules a little bit to sing it in place of a Canticle this morning. We can call it Canticle 22 (there are only 21 Canticles in the Book of Common Prayer), “Song of Paul”.

Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Hebrews 9:24
CONFESSION OF SIN
BCP PG. 41
The Officiant says to the people
Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear this holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Officiant and People together, all kneeling
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our 3
own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant alone stands and says
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Choir: O sing, all ye lands, with a jubilant voice; Glory be to God! O serve him with gladness, before him now rejoice; Sing praise unto God out of Zion! The Lord, he is God, he hath made us, not we; Glory be to God! The sheep of his pasture we evermore shall be; Sing praise unto God out of Zion! O enter his gates with thanksgiving and praise; Glory be to God! To honor his Name gladsome voices we will raise; Sing praise unto God out of Zion! For good is the Lord, and his mercy is sure; Glory be to God! To all generations his truth shall e’er endure; Sing praise unto God out of Zion! Amen.

Choir: 1. The earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it,* the world and all who dwell therein. 2. For it is he who founded it upon the seas* and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. 3. “Who can ascend the hill of the Lord?* and who can stand in his holy place?” 4. “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,* who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, 5
nor sworn by what is a fraud. 5. They shall receive a blessing from the Lord* and a just reward from the God of their salvation.” 6. Such is the generation of those who seek him,* of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors;* and the king of glory shall come in. 8. “Who is this King of glory?” “The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.” 9. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors;* and the King of glory shall come in. 10. “Who is he, this King of glory?” “The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.”
The Lessons LESSON I
Leviticus 8:1-13, 30-36 Pew Bible pg. 86
[1] The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, [2] “Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread. [3] And assemble all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.” [4] And Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and the congregation was assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting. [5] And Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing that the LORD has commanded to be done.” [6] And Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. [7] And he put the coat on him and tied the sash around his waist and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him and tied the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him, binding it to him with the band. [8] And he placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim. [9] And he set the turban on his head, and on the turban, in front, he set the golden plate, the holy crown, as the LORD commanded Moses. [10] Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. [11] And he sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them. [12] And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron's head and anointed him to consecrate him. [13] And Moses brought Aaron's sons and clothed them with coats and tied sashes around their waists and bound caps on them, as the LORD commanded Moses. [30] Then 6
Moses took some of the anointing oil and of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and his garments, and also on his sons and his sons' garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments, and his sons and his sons' garments with him. [31] And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ [32] And what remains of the flesh and the bread you shall burn up with fire. [33] And you shall not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for it will take seven days to ordain you. [34] As has been done today, the LORD has commanded to be done to make atonement for you. [35] At the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall remain day and night for seven days, performing what the LORD has charged, so that you do not die, for so I have been commanded.” [36] And Aaron and his sons did all the things that the LORD commanded by Moses.
Here ends the Lesson.

LESSON 2
Hebrews 12:1-14 Pew Bible pg. 1008
[1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, [2] looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. [3] Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. [4] In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. [5] And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. [6] For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. [7] It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating 8
you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? [8] If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. [9] Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? [10] For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. [11] For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. [12] Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, [13] and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. [14] Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Here ends the Lesson.

LESSON 3
John 13:31-35 Pew Bible pg. 900
[31] When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. [32] If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. [33] Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ [34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. [35] By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Here ends the Lesson.

Officiant and People together, all standing and chanting on one tone
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

O Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know thy Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leadeth to eternal life; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
COLLECT FOR SUNDAYS O God, who makest us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of thy Son our Lord: Grant us this day such blessing through our worship of thee, that the days to come may be spent in thy favor; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A COLLECT FOR THE RENEWAL OF LIFE O God, the King eternal, who dividest the day from the night and turnest the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep thy law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done thy will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night cometh, rejoice to give thee thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, 15
not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM
BCP. PG. 59
Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.
The Officiant concludes: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
