First Sunday in Lent February 22nd, 2015 + 11:00 a. m.
Welcome to Trinity A special welcome to those who are visiting; the addition of your praise and thanks to God heartens us all. If you are new to Trinity, please visit the Welcome Table directly across from the main door of the Nave; we would like to get to know you better, and to offer you a gift for being with us today. Restrooms are located directly across from the Nave just outside of Gravely Hall, and a Nursery is available for infants through age five. Please do not hesitate to speak to an usher or any church member if you have any questions or need any assistance.
Music Notes by: Ashley Sosis William Walond’s (1755-1836) music has been so talked about in little church music write-ups like mine that a zoom-info webpage has been generated for him-- an honor usually reserved for living working professionals. On the zoom-info page, these articles are listed as “web-references,” and the organist posts he held as, “employment history”. It is such an obvious computer-generated gaffe that it serves as a shocking reminder how important good research is to teaching music history. However, music history doesn’t serve William Walond a portrayal that stretches too far beyond his employment history: the churches he served (Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford; Chichester Cathedral) and the music that he wrote for church use (including today’s meditation and the postlude). It is easy to find his name and a set of dates in a list of organists that have served either Cathedral. On these lists there is nothing to distinguish his name from the others, just credit for continuing an unbroken line. I don’t say this with any disrespect for Walond’s musical contributions. The truth is quite the contrary. There’s something beautifully “Lenten” about going down in history as just a church organist. Quietly furthering the mission of the Church by keeping up with daily practice hours and weekly Sunday requirements is not flashy. It certainly doesn’t make for an enthralling Wikipedia or Harvard Dictionary of Music entry. But, how much more beautiful and meaningful is Christ’s account of what we have done for Him, in His name, for His people! There should be a “wiki” for that. 1
THE HOLY EUCHARIST: RITE ONE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT FEBRUARY 22ND, 2015 + 11:00 A. M. Please silence all audible electronic devices as you enter the church.

FIRST LESSON 1
HABAKKUK 1:1-11
The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. 2O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? 3Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. 4So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted. 5“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and 3
be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. 6For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own. 7They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves. 8Their horses are swifter than leopards, more fierce than the evening wolves; their horsemen press proudly on. Their horsemen come from afar; they fly like an eagle swift to devour. 9They all come for violence, all their faces forward. They gather captives like sand. 10At kings they scoff, and at rulers they laugh. They laugh at every fortress, for they pile up earth and take it. 11Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, whose own might is their god! People:

SECOND LESSON
1 PETER 3:18-22
18
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. People:
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. All stand and turn towards the procession.

GOSPEL
MARK 1: 9-15 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Reader: People: 9
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” 12The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” 10
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Rev. Iain Boyd, Rector
NICENE CREED All:
BCP. PG. 327 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; 6
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. At the conclusion of the Creed, Please KNEEL as you are able.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
BCP. 328
Celebrant: Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. Reader: Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and
supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers especially Mark, our
Bishop, and our priests, Iain and Donnie, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here
present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life; we pray especially for Dan & Sue Farley as he trains to be a deacon. People: Lord, hear our prayer.
7
Reader: We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of
government in this and every land especially President Obama, Governor Hailey, and Mayor Rhodes, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that,
rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all
those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and
fear, beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Reader: Loving Father, you heard the voice of the Israelites in Egypt, and you saw their affliction
and their toil and their oppression; so now hear the groans of your children as they suffer in Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Nigeria and throughout the world. Comfort and strengthen them through your Holy Spirit, let them be witnesses that their oppressors might see and turn to you, and hasten to bring them out of their suffering with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Reader: Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and
Advocate. People: Amen.

CONFESSION
BCP. 331
Celebrant:
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Celebrant: People:
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Celebrant:
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
COMFORTABLE WORDS After the Comfortable Words, all STAND for the Passing of the Peace.
GREETING OF PEACE Celebrant: People:
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit.

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. People:
