CHORAL EVENSONG FOR

THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD January 5th, 2014 + 4:00 p. m.

Organ Recital ASHLEY SOSIS, ORGANIST On the Hood Organ Es ist ein Ros (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming), arranged by: Daryl Bichel Two Christmas Pastorales, by: Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) Sortie on a Swiss Noel, by: César Franck (1822-1890) Pastorales have a long tradition in music for Christmas, especially in Italy where the piffari, shepherd-pipers, come into the villages on Christmas morning to play before the crèche. César Franck is best known for a few large organ works and a popular symphony; few realize that he produced hundreds of smaller organ works which could be played on single manual instruments. Es ist ein Ros was published in the Hartford Organ Book, which only had one printing for a North-East regional convention of the American Guild of Organists in 2005. The movement that opened the recital is part of a lovely larger work.

On the Farmer-Johnson Organ Canzona from Folkloric Suite by: Jean Langlais (1907-1991) Three Christmas Hymn Arrangements by: Wilbur Held (b. 1914) I. II. III.

Angels We Have Heard on High O Little Town of Bethlehem God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Of the Father’s Love Begotten by: Flor Peeters (1903-1986) Carol-Prelude on “Greensleeves” by: Searle Wright (1918-2004) Prelude on “Silent Night” by: Peter Pindar Stearns (b. 1931) Puer Nobis Nascitur (For Us a Son is Born) by: Gerald Near (b. 1942) The first piece, “Canzona”, is the fourth movement from the Folkloric Suite by: Jean Langlais. The movement is a setting of the German Chorale “Durch Adam’s Fall”. The text of the chorale captures the fall of Adam and Eve with particularly gloomy and despairing imagery, until the final stanza provides a beautiful message of salvation: “For my feet your holy word is a blazing lantern, a light that shows me the way forward; as this morning Star rises upon us we understand the great gifts that God's spirit has certainly promised to us, and in these we have our hope.” Wilbur Held was born near Chicago in 1914. He studied organ with Marcel Dupre and Andre Marchal and composition with Normand Lockwood and Wallingford Riegger. Dr. Held started composing little pieces for the organ because he felt that there was a lack of teaching material aimed at developing style and registration, especially for the romantic use of the instrument. In 1978, he retired to Clairmont, CA and at age 99 he remains an active member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

+PROCESSIONAL HYMN OPENING SENTENCE

135 Songs of Thankfulness and Praise SALZBURG Book of Common Prayer p. 61

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9

CONFESSION OF SIN The officiant says to the people Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Officiant and People together, all kneeling Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou, those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Jesus Christ our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. Amen. The Priest alone stands and says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all of your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Psalm 96

Sing to the Lord a / new song; * sing to the Lord, all / the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and / bless His Name; * proclaim the good news of His salvation from / day to day. Declare His glory among the / nations * and His wonders a-/mong all peoples. For great is the Lord and greatly / to be praised; * He is more to be feared / than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but / idols; * but it is the Lord who / made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of His / presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of His / sanctuary! Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the / peoples; * ascribe to the Lord hon-/or and pow’r. Ascribe to the Lord the honor / due His Name; * bring offerings and come in-/to His courts. Worship the Lord in the beauty of / holiness; * let the whole earth trem-/ble before Him. Tell it out among the nations: “The / Lord is King! * He has made the world so firm that it can-/not be moved; He will judge the peo-/ples with equity.” Let the heavens rejoice, and let the/ earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that / is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that/ is therein. Then shall all the trees of the wood /shout for joy before the Lord / when He comes, * when He comes to / judge the earth. all sing the final verse together:

Lessons LESSON 1

Isaiah 49:1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.” And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him—for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength—he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.” The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

LESSON 2

Revelation 21: 22-27

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Matthew 12:14-21 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him. Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

HOMILY + APOSTLES’ CREED

Book of Common Prayer p. 66

Officiant and people together, all standing. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Invitatory and Psalter COLLECTS O God, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know thee now by faith, to thy presence, where we may behold thy glory face to face; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship thee, all nations obey thee, all tongues confess and bless thee, and men and women everywhere love thee and serve thee in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

ANTHEM

Brightest and Best by: Malcolm Archer

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; Star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining; low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore him in slumber reclining, maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. Say, shall we yield him in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine, Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure: Richer by far is the hearts adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING Officiant and people Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, _______13

and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us what due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM (Officiant only) Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them; Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. + BENEDICTION

+ GRACE (chanted by officiant and congregation) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. + HYMN 26

O Gracious Light, Lord Jesus Christ
