About This Service This morning’s lessons and banners are arranged around the verses of the favorite Advent Hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”. Each verse is based on an “O antiphon”, an ancient prayer for deliverance, and they all begin by addressing the Messiah by one of the prophetic titles found in the Old Testament:

Here’s a fun fact-- the second letter of each antiphon read in inverse order (from last to first) spell out the Latin words ERO CRAS, which mean “tomorrow I will be with you,”. Together, we look forward to Christmas Day. Come, Lord Jesus! We are presenting Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols a bit early for its Christmas themes, but we thought the piece felt at home within the Latin antiphons and the solemn feel of this service. We hope you enjoy the bell-like sonorities of the St. Cecilia Choir’s young voices with our harpist and the thrill of the entire forces singing together on the first and last few movements. Though Benjamin Britten was a 20th century composer, the sources of the text of A Ceremony of Carols is taken from Medieval manuscripts by anonymous authors. Written in Latin, Middle English and Early Modern English, a few songs are macaronic, meaning the shift between more than one language! As you can expect, thorough translations are provided so that you can embrace the true meaning of each movement, even the movements that are fairly close to modern English. Many thanks to Dr. Ray Moye, Associate Professor of English at Coastal Carolina University, for carefully editing my translations before they made it into this program.

In Latin texts, the phrase “as the dewfall” may describe the physical intercession of the Holy Spirit.

THE NICENE CREED All:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
