Music Notes By: Ashley Sosis It may be obvious that music or styles of dancing have meter (1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3) but meter in poetry is a little trickier to define. Hymns are sacred poetry and there is a nifty index of meters in the back of your hymnal, so let’s talk about how meter in poetry works! English poetry breaks phrases into sets of stressed and unstressed syllables called feet. There are five basic rhythms of varying stresses in which these feet repeat. The names of the meters with two-syllable feet are iambs (unstressed followed by stressed), trochees (stressed followed by unstressed), and spondees (stressed followed by stressed). Meters with three syllables are called anapests (unstressed, unstressed, stressed) and dactyls (stressed, stressed, unstressed). The number of feet of iambs, trochees, spondees, dactyls or anapests enable further classification. A line of only one foot is a monometer, 2 feet is dimeter, 3 feet trimester, 4 tetrameter, 5 pentameter, 6 hexameter, 7 heptameter, and 8 octameter. To put it together, an example of trochaic monometer (stressed followed by unstressed, one set per line) is the poem entitled, “Fleas”: Adam had ‘em. Hymn text meters have a classification system much simpler than that, but less specific— don’t count the feet in each phrase, just count the number syllables and then write each stanza into a chart. For example, our Doxology, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow” has the meter (8/8/8/8) 1Praise 2God 3from 4whom 5all 67blessings 8flow…Can you count the rest in your head? (It’s okay to count with your fingers!) So, you can use the index of meters in the back of the hymnal to find texts that share the same meter. What can you do with that information? Switch out texts with other tunes! (You can sing the text of hymns 370, 409, 487 and the praise song “In Christ Alone” to the same tune as “Praise God from whom all blessings flow”, hymn 380). If you’re serious about getting a perfect fit, though, use the index of meters as a general guide and then further classify the text for stressed/unstressed syllable patterns.
