Happy new year! This first Sunday of Advent is also the start of the church year. May this year abound with blessings on this church and its people! Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas, just as Let prepares for Easter. The reoccurring theme of the Second Coming of Christ pervades our readings throughout Advent, giving this season a feeling of joyful expectation. This morning’s hymns are 56, “O come, O come Emmanuel”, 436, “Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates”, and 555, “Lead on, O King
Eternal.” The choir’s anthems are also hymns, “Lo, He comes with clouds descending,” and “O Lord, how shall I meet you?” “O come, O come Emmanuel” is a translation of a 12th century Latin hymn whose every stanza begins by giving Jesus a new title of honor: “O Emmanuel”, “O Wisdom from on high”, “O Lord of Might”, Dayspring”, “O Branch of Jesse’s Tree”, “Thou Key of David”, and “Thou dayspring”, “Desire of nations”. Each derived from scripture, these stanzas form the basis of our upcoming Advent Lessons and Carols on December 16th at 10:30am. If you look up at the choir loft, you will see blue banners with depictions of each of these verses of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Can you match each banner with its correct verse? The answer will be in the program on the 16th. “Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates” by Georg Weissel (15901635) is the most famous paraphrase of Psalm 24, and reveals a spirit of praise and hope unexpected from the depths of the dreadful years of the Thirty Years’ War (as Now Thank We All Our God mention/sung two weeks ago). “Lo, He comes with clouds descending” by Charles Wesley is a favorite hymn of Campus Outreach students attending our service two and three years ago. They made a very good case for this hymn being less an Advent hymn and more of a hymn of praise that could be sung throughout the year. The ideas and language of Wesley’s hymn are borrowed from the book of Revelation, and the whole is based on Rev. 1:7, “Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.” 12
