The Day of Pentecost May 15th, 2016 + 11:00 a. m.
Welcome to Trinity A special welcome to those who are visiting; the addition of your praise and thanks to God heartens us all. If you are new to Trinity, please visit the Welcome Table directly across from the main door of the Nave; we would like to get to know you better and to offer you a gift for being with us today. Restrooms are located directly across from the Nave just outside of Gravely Hall, and a Nursery is available for infants through age five. Please do not hesitate to speak to an usher or any church member if you have any questions or need any assistance.
Music Notes By: Ashley Sosis Today’s postlude has words! No, actually it doesn’t. But it is based on a Gregorian chant that does. I am providing the text below so that it gives context to the piece. The text addresses Christ, but I feel that the text also mentions works of the Holy Spirit (Pour light on us from above/and fire our hearts with Thy strong love). I am not fond of metered, rhyming translations, because so much of the original word-to-word meaning is lost, but the 1906 translation below by Charles Bigg (1840-1908) is charming. One note- the word “assize” means “trial”. Verbum supernum prodiens a Patre lumen exiens, qui natus orbi subvenis cursu declivi temporis:
High Word of God, who once didst come, Leaving Thy Father and Thy home, To succor by Thy birth our kind, When, towards Thy advent, time declined,
Illumina nunc pectora tuoque amore concrema; audita per praeconia sint pulsa tandem lubrica.
Pour light upon us from above, And fire our hearts with Thy strong love, That, as we hear Thy Gospel read, All fond desires may flee in dread;
Iudexque cum post aderis rimari facta pectoris, reddens vicem pro abditis iustisque regnum pro bonis,
That when Thou comest from the skies, Great Judge, to open Thine assize, To give each hidden sin its smart, And crown as kings the pure in heart,
Non demum artemur malis pro qualitate criminis, sed cum beatis compotes simus perennes caelites.
We be not set at Thy left hand, Where sentence due would bid us stand, But with the saints Thy face may see, Forever wholly loving Thee.
Sit, Christe, rex piissime, tibi Patrique gloria cum Sancto Spiritu Paraclito, in sempiterna saecula. Amen.

Praise to the Father and the Son, Through all the ages as they run; And to the holy Paraclete Be praise with Them and worship meet. Amen.

FIRST LESSON
[1] Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. [2] And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. [3] And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. [4] Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” [5] And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. [6] And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. [7] Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” [8] So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. [9] Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth. The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
PSALM 104: 1-9,25
Formula by C.V. Stanford
Choir: 1. Bless the Lord, O my soul;* O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness! You are clothed with majesty and splendor. 2. You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak;* and spread out the heavens like a curtain. 3. You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above;* you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. 4. You make the winds your messengers;* and flames of fire your servants. 5. You have set the earth upon its foundations,* so that it never shall move at any time. 4
BCP pg. 735
6. You covered it with the deep as with a mantle;* the waters stood higher than the mountains. 7. At your rebuke they fled;* at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. 8. They went up to the hills, and down to the valleys beneath;* to the places you had appointed for them. 9. You set the limits that they should not pass;* they shall not again cover the earth. 25. O Lord, how manifold are your works!* in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
SECOND LESSON
Acts 2:1-21 Pew Bible pg. 909
[1] When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. [2] And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. [3] And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. [5] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. [6] And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. [7] And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? [8] And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? [9] Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, [11] both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” [12] And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” [13] But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” [14] But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. [15] For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. [16] But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: [17] “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; [18] even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. [19] And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; [20] the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. [21] And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

GOSPEL
Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. [8] Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” [9] Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? [10] Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. [11] Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. [12] “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. [15] “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, [17] even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
