CHORAL MORNING PRAYER FOR THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 25th, 2016 + 11:00am

Music Notes By: Ashley Sosis How did you read today’s anthem title in your head? (Thou, O God, art praised in Sion) Sion is the Latin version of the word Zion and if it was sung in a string of other Latin words, “Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion”, it would be pronounced “See-on”. The Latin spelling of Sion is used here because the text is from the 1535 Miles Coverdale (1488-1569) Bible, the translation used for the psalms in the 1928 prayerbook. His translation was based on the Latin Vulgate bible, among other sources, so it makes sense that the Latin spelling of Sion is preserved. We are ignoring the Latin pronunciation (See-on) because here it seems out of place in the context surrounded by English words, like using the proper Greek pronunciation of the word Gyro when you’re ordering one from Arby’s. (I honestly don’t know the polite thing to do in that situation.) IF you do feel compelled to pronounce Sion “See-on” because of Latin rules, you may also have recognized the Latin snippet above (Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion) as the translation of, “Thou, O God, art praised in Sion”. And if you recognized it, perhaps it is because you are familiar with the Latin Requiem text and know that Psalm 65:1-2 appears in the opening movement (below in bold) of a Requiem Mass. “Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord,

et lux perpetua leceat eis.

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Te decet hymnus Deus in Zion,

A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion.

et tibi redetur

and to thee shall be fulfilled

votum in Jerusalem:

a vow in Jerusalem.

exaudi orationem meam,

Hear my prayer,

ad te omnis caro veniet.”

for unto thee all flesh shall come.

Like a requiem, it is a Cento (a poem or a musical work that features a collection of different texts). “Thou, O God…” is in three parts: part 1 (Psalm 65:1-2,4) calls the listener to worship, part 2 (Isaiah 26: 3-4) extols the virtue of a life lived in fear of the Lord, and part 3 (Psalm 67:3,6,7) tells of the blessings that come from the Lord. Fun fact: Boyle’s “Thou, O God, art praised in Sion” was sung as an introit at Dr. George Guest’s (the author of a book of chanted Psalms we use often) funeral in 2002.

Some of the text included Boyle Anthem also appears in this morning’s Psalm setting—Richard Proulx’s “The Gift of Peace”. The text in common is, “O let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the people praise you.The earth has brought forth her increase; may God give us his blessing.” What beautiful words! May we praise God this Fall for the abundant blessings he has given us. 2

PROCESSIONAL HYMN

9, Not here for high and holy things MORNING SONG

Officiant

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son." -Luke 15:18, 19

CONFESSION OF SIN The Officiant says to the people

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. 3

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Officiant alone stands and says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Lessons LESSON I

Hosea 2:2-14 Pew Bible pgs. 751-752

[1] Say to your brothers, “You are my people,” and to your sisters, “You have received mercy.” [2] “Plead with your mother, plead— for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband— that she put away her whoring from her face, and her adultery from between her breasts; [3] lest I strip her naked and make her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a parched land, and kill her with thirst. [4] Upon her children also I will have no mercy, because they are children of whoredom. [5] For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’ [6] Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths. [7] She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.’ [8] And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal. [9] Therefore I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season, and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness. [10] Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand. [11] And I will put an end to all her mirth, her 7

feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed feasts. [12] And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, ‘These are my wages, which my lovers have given me.’ I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall devour them. [13] And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the LORD. [14] “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her.

Here ends the Lesson.

CANTICLE 9: THE FIRST SONG OF ISAIAH

Ecce, Deus

Anglican Chant Formula by: Henry Walford Davies Choir: 1. Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust in him and not be afraid. 2. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and he will be my Savior. 3. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation. 4. And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord, and call upon his Name; 5. Make his deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his Name is exalted. 6. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, * and this is known in all the world. 7. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

LESSON 2

James 3:1-13 Pew Bible pg. 1012

[1] Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. [2] For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. [3] If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. [4] Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. [5] So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! [6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. [7] For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, [8] but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. [9] With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. [10] From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. [11] Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? [12] Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. [13] Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

Here ends the Lesson.

LESSON 3

Luke 16: 19-31 Pew Bible pg. 876

[19] “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. [20] And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, [21] who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, [23] and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. [24] And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ [25] But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. [26] And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ [27] And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house—[28] for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ [29] But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ [30] And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ [31] He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Here ends the Lesson.

SERMON

SERMON NOTES:

11

THE APOSTLES’ CREED Officiant and People together, all standing and chanting on one tone

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
