Dear Friends of the Ashley Hall Community,

A

s we prepare for the start of the 2018-2019 academic year, we recognize and celebrate those who have shared their time, talent, and treasure with Ashley Hall and who continue to serve as ambassadors for this inspiring community. It is encouraging to see families, alumnae, and friends become investors in support of our mission “to produce an educated woman who is independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence.”

The success presented in the 2017–2018 Annual Report demonstrates the shared pride and camaraderie of the Ashley Hall community. Last year, gifts to the Loyalty Fund topped $1.1 million in support of our girls. More than 1,500 benefactors across various constituencies—including parents, alumnae, grandparents, faculty, board members, and friends—supported the School during the Loyalty Fund campaign, including nearly 200 donors who led the way at the 1909 Society leadership level. Moreover, Ashley Hall is making significant investments in our historic buildings and facilities on campus through the From Here to There initiatives. In all that we do, we are grateful for your past, present, and future support of Ashley Hall.

Expanding the Ashley Hall Campus Footprint:

Warren Street House

C

onstruction of Ashley Hall’s newest edition to campus actually began in 1823! Located at 89 Warren Street and opening Fall 2018, the Warren Street House is the home of the new Admission Welcome Center, which was specifically designed to cater to the needs of prospective families. A full-service admission suite features light-filled testing areas and a hospitable conference room.

Warren Street House also offers additional learning space dedicated to the humanities and languages, including two traditional Harkness learning studios and two learning spaces that provide a more flexible and innovative environment for twentyfirst century learning. Especially exciting is the inclusion of a living laboratory with a full-service kitchen to enrich programming throughout campus.

Ashley Hall looks forward to a dedicated stewardship of the Warren Street House. This is the School’s third preservation initiative and joins two other historic properties: McBee House (c.1820) and Elizabeth House (c.1824).

Additional Projects

While embracing its rich traditions, Ashley Hall envisions a campus that boldly meets the needs of the twenty-first century student and enhances its footprint in the heart of historic Charleston.

LODOME AT PARDUE HALL Through direct faculty input, the final stages of this renovation (including installation of flooring, acoustical enhancements, and the addition of furniture) addressed our commitment to every student and instructor by fully equipping this spectacular collaborative space and setting the stage for an extraordinary learning environment.

INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM AT KEITH HOUSE This renovation will offer five large, fully-appointed classroom spaces and an additional 1,800 square feet dedicated to a state-of-the-art science and math innovation laboratory.

STUDENT LIFE CENTER AT LANE HALL With a need for enhanced personal counseling and dedicated college preparation, this project of 6,000 square feet of repurposed space will support an already robust program tailored to each Ashley Hall Upper School student, from wellness programming to college counseling.

JENKINS HALL SCIENCE LABORATORIES In addition to renovating current space on the first floor to support critical science programming, this project will expand the number of science laboratories with the addition of two new state-of-the-art laboratories on the third floor of Jenkins Hall.

A new Smith Street entrance and the completed LoDome covering Pardue Hall welcome students back for the start of a great year!

The entire fourth grade is invited to a birthday party, and in lieu of presents, the girls choose to give donations for victims of hurricanes Irma and Harvey. The guests contribute almost $700! PQV to all for remembering to put others first.

Early Education Center (EEC) faculty members Dana Molony and Wendy Robbins create the Ashley Hall Nature Retreat by forging paths in the forested areas surrounding Ashley Hall’s Sports Complex on Johns Island. EEC students soon after enjoy exploring the wooded wonderland during field trips and an immersion week.

With the holidays around the corner, the Chicora Gift Giving Project kicks into high-gear with approximately 80 volunteers, including Ashley Hall faculty, staff, students, and alumnae assembling gifts bags filled with goodies such as a new school uniform, books, and of course a toy from Santa for Chicora Elementary students.

Students parade as angels, jesters, kings, shepherds, and the full cast of the crèche to welcome the holiday season with Ashley Hall’s annual production of The Christmas Play.

As part of Ashley Hall Travel Programs, Upper School string students spend a week of their winter break touring the Umbrian area of Italy. The girls play two public concerts, one in Trevi and the other in Spoleto.

Did You Know? Director of the EEC Dana VanHook has led this special project since 1999.

Did You Know? A performance derived from fourteenth-century mystery plays in Chester, England, and a tradition at the School for more than ninety years, The Christmas Play was first directed by Miss McBee, the founding head of school, in 1924.

Did You Know? Seventy-eight percent of the 2018 graduating class traveled internationally on school trips.

Seniors organize “Square Dance at the Hall,” a fun-filled campus event for all ages with live music, dinner, and lots of line dancing and do-si-doing, including big sisters helping the younger girls and parents dancing with their children!

To cap the campus-wide celebration of Madeleine L’Engle ’37, renowned author of the Newbery Award-winning classic A Wrinkle in Time, Ashley Hall dedicates “The Madeleine Oak,” a majestic tree the author climbed while a student at Ashley Hall.

Acclaimed New York-based multimedia artist Aurora Robson leads students across divisions in transforming reclaimed plastic waste into a new art installation hanging from the LoDome in Pardue Hall.

Did You Know? Ashley Hall’s Big Sister-Little Sister program matches each kindergartner with a sixth grader and a senior. Staying together each year, the girls bond during special campus events, including the Cardboard Challenge, Book Festival Week, and pep rallies.

As part of the Junior Internship Program, juniors finish the school year interning in some amazing career fields: medicine, diplomacy, aviation, art and design, environmental engagement, law, and fashion, among others!

Newly graduated, the Class of 2018 joins the ranks of Ashley Hall’s alumnae.

For students attending Horizons and Camp Ashley Hall, nothing beats a cool swim in the Madren Pool, which has been in use since 1918 and is the oldest above-ground pool in South Carolina and North Carolina.

Did You Know? A requirement for graduation, the junior internship program promotes integrated learning and builds confidence as students transition into their final year of high school.

Did You Know? The Class of 2018 garnered a record $4.5 million in Merit Scholarship Awards, adding to a total of $9 million in merit money in five years.

he 1909 Society, Ashley Hall’s oldest giving society, honors donors who annually give $1,909 or more to the Loyalty Fund. The 1909 Society, founded in 1984 to mark the 75th Anniversary of Ashley Hall, is open to the community and offers special benefits. Gifts from this leadership giving group comprise approximately 70 percent of all dollars given to the Loyalty Fund. We thank the members of the 1909 Society for their leadership, philanthropic contributions, and continued commitment to Ashley Hall.

rom becoming better swimmers to gaining a love for science and engineering, 30 rising first and secondgrade girls from Memminger and Mitchell Elementary Schools took part in the inaugural Horizons at Ashley Hall for six fulfilling and transformative weeks this summer. As the first South Carolina school and second all-girls’ school in the nation to offer the award-winning, tuition-free Horizons program, Ashley Hall prioritizes academic innovations and meaningful community connections such as Horizons.

In addition to faculty and staff working as teachers, the School’s student and alumnae volunteers served as Horizons Assistant Teachers (HATS), a crucial element to establishing a welcoming campus environment to build meaningful friendships. Having experienced a joyous summer of reading, STEAM classes, music, and swimming, each girl will begin her school year better prepared academically and will return to Ashley Hall’s campus this fall and spring for special Saturday Horizons sessions.
