MASTER’S THESIS: HOME RESILIENCE Taopi, MN University of New Mexico Research + Design | August 2022 - May 2023 Award | ARCC King Medal On April 12th, 2022 my parents and hometown experienced an EF-2 tornado. The tornado destroyed nearly every building on the farm that I grew up on in Taopi, Minnesota.

Since the event, I have had a growing desire to understand why severe weather has become increasingly more frequent. I’ve explored ways in which a dwelling can be designed to be more durable and resilient when these types of events occur. My research includes a combination of sustainable, resilient, and adaptive techniques so that when a dwelling is faced with a severe weather event it will be partially salvageable, or in some cases fully salvageable. A partially salvageable dwelling has the ability to be repaired and lived in again, proving a structure is resilient to future weather events and allowing for future adaptive changes to occur. This project consisted of extensive site analysis, structural and building material research, and programming for unique client needs.

RIVERWOOD VILLAGE APARTMENTS Laughlin, NV Integrated Design & Architecture Project Manager | Ashley Kasel SD - DD - CD Phases | August 2024 - Present Riverwood Village Apartments was a renovation project comprised of 16, 2- and 3-story buildings with 207 units. As project manager, I determined and coordinated unit and building layouts, navigating challenges due to the project’s vast size and multiple renovations over the years, which created an excess of individual unit plan configurations.

Once the unit and building types were determined, I lead the project team in developing a schematic drawing package for submittal to the Nevada Housing Division for tax credit funding. I communicated with the client about site amenities, community space, laundry facilities, and energy requirements in order to finalize the scope of work. Beyond basic unit renovations, we converted a small activity, storage, and excess maintenance space into a new community room and kitchenette. Following the schematic drawing package, I prepared the construction document files for the project team to begin work on. I then assigned tasks to and supervised team members through the production of construction documents, generating redlines, coordinating drawings, and modifying elements per client request.

MABRY VILLAGE APARTMENTS Clovis, NM Integrated Design & Architecture Project Manager | Ashley Kasel SD Phase | October 2023 - Present The project goal for Mabry Village Apartments was to convert an existing motel into efficiency and one-bedroom units and to demolish the rarely used multipurpose space while salvaging the pool and handball court amenities. The remaining site would then be utilized to build a new 3-story building consisting of 2-bedroom units and 2-story townhomes consisting of 3-bedroom units. Due to the substantial amount of space on-site, amenities such as walking paths, barbeque and picnic areas, playgrounds, games, and grass play areas were provided. As project manager, I schematically worked through various design iterations for the layout of the site and buildings. I set-up and participated in conversations with the client and developer for additional feedback to establish a finalized design. The project site was in close proximity to a major railroad and highway, which required our design to respond to the environment in order to meet MFA noise level standards. Working with the general contractor to obtain preliminary estimates to understand the cost of demolition and the cost of converting motel rooms into livable housing units was also crucial for the developer to determine project feasibility.

501 + 601 CENTRAL Albuquerque, NM Integrated Design & Architecture Project Managers | Ashley Kasel & Brooke Gonzales SD - DD Phases | October 2023 - September 2024 501 + 601 Central are two separate sites, located within a block of each other, along Central Avenue. The client’s desire was to use these sites as a way to weave the urban fabric of the main street corridor with the surrounding residential neighborhood while also balancing economic feasibility. To do this the client asked that we design an affordable workforce housing project. As project manager for 501 Central, I worked closely with the project manager for 601 Central to analyze and interpret the Albuquerque IDO and MFA standards. These standards greatly constrained the already small sites, minimizing the buildable area. We generated multiple design iterations to discuss with the client and developer. Once the schematic layout was chosen, we moved further into designing the building interior, unit plan layouts, site configuration, and locations of amenities. We also coordinated schematic and sketch plat drawing packages for review

by MFA and the city Development Review Board. The Albuquerque IDO is complex, so it was important for us to refer back to our initial analysis throughout our iteration and design process.
