HAAC hosts studio art classes with Dan Bartges Contributed Report news@mechocal.com The Hanover Arts & Activities Center (HAAC) has announced another four-week series of studio art classes conducted by nationally-known artist Dan Bartges.

Classes are for all levels and in all media – oils, acrylics, watercolors or charcoal. Each class will include instruction, a live model and still lifes. All proceeds will go to the nonprofit center.

Classes will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on four consecutive Monday nights: May 23 and 30, June 6 and June 13.

Hanover death investigation begins On Monday, May 2 at approximately 6:09 p.m., deputies responded to the Montpelier Shoppes in the 16000 block of Mountain Road for a report of an adult male lying unconscious on the ground next to a vehicle.

Once on scene, deputies located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The gun was located next to the body. Lifesaving measures were attempted but were ultimately unsuccessful.

The adult male has been

identified as John Slaw, 81, of Montpelier.

Investigators continue to look into the moments leading up to this incident and are currently not seeking any suspects in this case. They continue to work with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause of death.

The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office extends their deepest condolences to the family of John Slaw during this difficult time.

Investigators seek information in reckless handling case On Feb. 9 at approximately 6 a.m., deputies responded to the 6700 block of Rural Point Road for a complaint of shots fired into an occupied residence. Once on scene, two bullet holes were located in the side of the residence.

After examining the evidence, it was determined that both projectiles entered the residence causing damage to property inside. There were no injuries to any of the occupants.

Mechanicsville High School students visited Bell Creek Middle School and took victory laps around their old elementary schools; Hanover High School students visited Pole Green Elementary School; Patrick Henry High School students paraded outside of Liberty Middle School and their former elementary schools; and Atlee High School students visited Cool Spring Elementary School and WashingtonHenry Elementary School.

arts and activities and has hosted special events and performances for 70 years in the R-MC community, including regular performances by the Richmond Symphony and the Ashland Musical Variety Show.

With an expansion to the school’s programming in the performing arts, the need for additional facilities was identified and construction began in the fall of 2020. The school held a soft opening for the new center in the fall and has since utilized it throughout the spring semester.

The newly renovated Blackwell Auditorium now flows into the 19,000-squarefoot performing arts center and includes an enlarged lobby, sound and light lock entrances to separate the lobby from the performance space, ADAcompliant platform seating, an improved sound system and a drop-down projector screen.

The center also features a separate Cobb-Kesler Studio Theatre that can seat up to 140 guests, Haun Rehearsal Hall, drama classrooms, a scene shop, offices for faculty and more.

On April 29, around 250 attendees visited the Randolph-Macon Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate the facility’s official opening, dedication and various donors that helped make the new space possible. Invited guests enjoyed a cocktail reception along with performances by the Jazz Improvisation Lab and a scene from “Peter and the Starcatcher,” followed by

performances by R-MC’s concert choir, chamber singers and the LUXE Show Choir.

Friday’s ceremony was only the beginning of a weekend of festivities, with lively performances held in the new space throughout the weekend. Saturday’s performances yielded a full house of attendees and alumni, including the Kesler family, Cobb family and Dr. Larry Haun. The Blackwell Auditorium featured two performances in the afternoon by R-MC’S instrumental ensemble and LUXE Show Choir followed by a performance of “Peter and the Starcatcher” in the Cobb-Kesler Theater.

Sunday’s program featured another performance by the LUXE Show Choir along with the return of the Richmond Symphony, who offered a powerful performance titled “Mozart and More.”

“This was the way the weekend was … kind of celebrating the past but really looking forward to all the potential of the future,” Doering said.

He said some of the most exciting features of the new building are the intricatelydesigned spaces specifically for theater and music, such as the scene shop for students to build theater sets and the stateof-the-art Haun Rehearsal Hall designed for sound clarity, which houses exceptional acoustics.

“We haven’t had a space specifically designed for music performance here on campus,” Doering said. “…I think that’s something you could immediately tell walking into a rehearsal – how everything just kind of went up a level for students, because they were now in an area where they could really

hear what they were doing and could build on that.”

“The energy has gone up exponentially” among students with the new facility, Doering said, especially following a pause in performing arts and overall campus activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he has already seen students taking advantage of the building’s various lounge areas and open spaces to practice, study or socialize.

R-MC President Robert Lindgren said the new facility offers the ability to expand the school’s growing performing arts program, which includes the theater program; two choral ensembles, the concert choir and chamber singers; instrumental ensembles such as the Randolph-Macon Ensemble, Jazz Improvisation Lab and others.

“So the exciting part about this is that we could expand our performing arts programs and offerings to students and have facilities that could accommodate that expansion,”

Lindgren said.

Both Lindgren and Doering said the new facility will not only benefit music and theater majors but all students interested in the performing arts.

“The performing arts now have a home at RandolphMacon,” Doering said. “And that doesn't just mean for students that are here to major in music or theater… Students might be majoring in the sciences but they still want to sing or they still want to play their violin, and that's something they can do here. And the space is inviting and gives us a spot to do that in ways that benefits all of campus.”

“It’s nice to have both additional faculty and the opportunity for students to participate,” Lindgren said. “And then of course, as they participate and as they perform, they create programming that’s a benefit to both the Randolph-Macon community but also to the greater Ashland community and beyond.”

A memorable first Hanover County festival

A

memorable first Hanover County festival The morning of Ashland Train Day dawned perfectly sunny – a great day for an outdoor festival. The sound of the music and excited clamor of the crowds could be heard even from the parking lot My already present excitement built up to a crescendo as I began weaving through the hub of activity, ready to experience my first Hanover County street festival.

The first sight of the lively parade of community members of all ages wandering around the blocked-off streets was particularly impressive.

With all of Downtown Ashland and surrounding areas absorbed in the day’s festivities, it truly felt as if the entire community had flocked to the “Center of the Universe.”

The sunny day’s vibrancy noticeably added to the energetic atmosphere, and the day certainly proved to be the perfect family affair. Children danced to upbeat music playing through the DJ’s speakers in the middle of town as parents watched fondly. Others raced to climb aboard the stretch of emergency service vehicles, tractors and trailers

that lined the streets. Many swarmed the variety of impressively large and realistic toy model trains on display, with some even participating in model train drag racing.

The assortment of family activities for both children and parents to enjoy seemed endless, and the pure joy of the festival evoked a sense of childhood nostalgia. As laughter from children danced in the air, it was fun to think about the many fond memories these families were making together, possibly even continuing traditions that go back several years. Just as I recall the modest community celebrations from my own hometown, these children may well grow up remembering moments from this extraordinary community festival for the rest of their lives.

Apart from the many attractions for children to enjoy, the amount of things to do in just a short day’s time was overwhelming. Wandering aimlessly around the block, I conversed with vendors and ventured into as many shops or attractions as possible.

Talking with a few local groups that put together the model trains, they spoke about the amount of time, attention to detail and teamwork it took to put together the impressive displays. It was also enjoyable to chat with various historical societies and listen to their plethora of knowledge of the region’s

railroad history. Interacting with individuals who hold such a love for railroad history, their passion can be contagious, and I am sure they sparked the curiosity of more than a few people that day.

A few other highlights of the day involved exploring the variety of attractions for art enthusiasts. My first visit to the historic Ashland Theater was memorable on its own, but it was a special experience to watch the amusing and lighthearted performance by Ashland’s Whistle Stop Theatre Company for the first time. The impressive Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Artmobile, which was a must-see item, truly gave the feeling of stepping into the halls of the VMFA, and the touchscreen displays of the artists provided a fun and interactive experience.

It would be impossible to encapsulate all of the wonderful experiences I and other festivalgoers had at the Ashland Train Day, but whether it was your first time or you are a regular who looks forward to the festival every year, organizers created a memorable and enriching experience. Never before experiencing one of Hanover County’s many staple community festivals, it was a perfect day to truly kick off a summer of community celebration. With the summer’s calendar loaded with many more festivals and activities to enjoy, I look forward to truly experiencing all that the county has to offer.

Reader offers recommendation for school board seat The notice for the open Mechanicsville District School Board seat is probably the most important notice from a previous edition of The Local. It is a clarion call to those willing to serve the most important constituents of any community: the students.

Service on the school board offers the opportunity to exert a positive influence on the trajectory of many lives – now and well into the future. I am a product of the Hanover School system and acknowledge my great debt to those administrators and teachers. They did more than teach – they inspired. Thank you one and all!

There are nine individuals who have indicated their interest in serving the Mechanicsville District on the Hanover County School Board for the four-year term beginning July 1. Hanover County is blessed to have such people willing to assume that mantle of responsibility and serve in such a challenging capacity. Hanover County residents have a right to have the best and the brightest serve on the school board. The success of each student affects every one of us.

Whether you have family members being tutored in the county’s school system or not, you are a stakeholder in the success and excellence of our school system. A community is judged by many metrics, and one of the most important is the effectiveness of its education system.

The importance of a good education and having good schools cannot be overstated. People gravitate to communities having excellent school systems. This appeal is reflected in stable property values and desirable, vibrant communities.

The Heart of Virginia Council delivers scouting to over 8,500 youth and adult members in 24 counties of the Central Virginia and Richmond area. The Battlefield District, in particular, covers Henrico and Hanover counties east of Interstate 95, including the counties of New Kent and Charles City.

Chuck Hurd, Battlefield District Vice Chairman, presented Chalkley with this year’s Spirit of Scouting Award.

Hurd said the recipient is an individual who was nominated by a committee of local scouting volunteers and does not have to have a scouting background. Instead, the recipient of the award needs to represent and live by the characteristics that embody the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Hurd recited the Scout Oath to the crowd.

“On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight,” he said.

He also recited the Scout Law, which consists of 12 goals for each scout to live up to every day.

According to the law, a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Hurd said Chalkley as embodies all of these virtues and discussed his impressive background in law.

Chalkley has been an active member of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Association of Commonwealth Attorney’s, National Attorneys Association and the Hanover County Bar Association, where he served as president from 1997 to 1998. He has also been affiliated with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Mechanicsville Ruritan Club and the University of Richmond Spider Club.

Chalkley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Richmond in 1973, majoring in both history and political science while minoring in classics. He received his law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law in 1976.

Following graduation, he served in a private practice from 1976 to 1978, served as assistant Commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Richmond from 1978 to 1979 and for Hanover County from 1980 to 1983. He started a private practice specializing in criminal defense from 1984 to 2007 and eventually assumed the role of the Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney in 2008 – a position he maintains today.

“He’s committed to protecting the innocent, prosecuting the guilty, and he believes that a well-trained and dedicated law professional is the best friend of an innocent person,” Hurd said.

Ashland awarded Virginia Tourism Grant for ‘Center Your Universe’ marketing campaign Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The Town of Ashland is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC). The grant will help fund the Town’s “Center Your Universe” marketing and visitor experience campaign expected to launch in 2022 and continue throughout 2023.

As part of the campaign and in partnership with the Downtown Ashland Association and the Ashland Museum, the Town will develop and launch a new interactive visitor app, which will include storytelling and audio tour features, as well as highlight Ashland’s events, restaurants, shops and hotels to visitors. The app will also give visitors the ability to build custom trip itineraries for their time spent in the Center of the Universe.

“We truly appreciate Virginia Tourism’s investment in Ashland’s growing tourism economy,” said Martha J. Miller, community engagement manager for the Town

of Ashland. “These funds will enable us to expand our marketing reach and develop assets in keeping with the interests of the next generation of travelers.”

“Our historic downtown and theatre, variety of annual community events, and strategic location along the I-95 corridor already make Ashland a compelling draw for day-trippers and regional travelers,” Miller added. “Pair these existing attributes with the forthcoming Mid-Atlantic Railroad Park and future completion of the Fall Line Trail, of which Ashland will serve as its northern trailhead, and I believe we’re looking at a very strong and exciting tourism economy for this community in the future.”

Governor Glenn Youngkin recently announced that VTC awarded more than $2.7 million for 259 local and regional tourism marketing programs across the state to help increase visitation and revenue for Virginia’s localities through tourism.

Within the Town of Ashland and Hanover County, additional grant recipients include Downtown Ashland Association, $5,000;

Center of the Universe Brewing Co, $6,700; and Green Top Sporting Goods, $30,000.

“These grant funds provide an important opportunity for communities across the Commonwealth to accelerate recovery efforts and continue with their best-inclass marketing initiatives to attract new travelers,” said Rita McClenny, president and CEO of Virginia Tourism. “Increased visitation translates directly into revenue generation, underscoring tourism’s important role in stimulating economic growth and expansion” The VTC Regional Marketing Program aims to help Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs), such as the Town of Ashland, drive overnight visitation and to supplement funding for economically significant special events and festivals in order to increase overnight visitation. The DMO funding is projected to drive more than 125,000 room nights over the next 18 months.

Hurd added Chalkley is most proud of his family and enjoys spending as much time with them as he can. He also enjoys golfing, reading, watching sports and has been a member of the Fairmount Christian Church with his family since 1993.

“Thank you Trip for being an outstanding member of our scouting community and for accepting the Battlefield District Spirit of Scouting Award,” Hurd said. “We look forward to your continued leadership and investment in Hanover County.”

The crowd of attendees honored Chalkley with a standing ovation.

He said while he does not have a scouting background, he has made dear friends with those involved in scouting and credits learning everything that scouting teaches from his grandparents, parents, siblings, family and the friends he’s surrounded himself with over the years.

“I’m very, very lucky to be born into a family, to have

a family, to have such dear friends that epitomize what scouting is each and every day,” Chalkley said. “They make me better through that association… I am truly, truly honored… thank you so much for this, and God bless you.”

In addition to honoring Chalkley, the reception aimed to raise needed funds to support and grow scouting programs across Central Virginia. Attendees had the opportunity to make a pledge to support scouting in 2022 before and during the ceremony.

Hawks prevail in dust-up with Mustangs

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE — When two of the top teams in the Richmond metropolitan area meet, fans can expect fireworks. When those two teams happen to be cross-county rivals, fans can expect plenty of fireworks.

Fans of Mechanicsville and Hanover were not disappointed by the amount of action when the Mustangs visited the Hawks’ diamond Thursday night.

Mechanicsville’s fans may have been disappointed with a 9-8 loss to the Hawks, but what happened on the field had plenty of entertainment value. Both teams had plenty to be proud of.

“Thursday night was a great game,” wrote Hanover head baseball coach Tyler Kane in a text lightly edited for style and clarity. “Mechanicsville scored three in the first and we responded with four in the bottom half (of the inning).

Cannon Peebles hit a ball off the center field wall to lead off the bottom half of the first inning.”

The game was moved up from Friday because of anticipated adverse weather, and the Mustangs had no chance to rest arms after earning a 3-2 win over Mills Godwin the previous evening.

“It was wild. It was ‘Wow!,’” said Mechanicsville head baseball coach Tyler Johnson.

“Playing in Hanover back-toback days two of the top teams here in Richmond, two of the top teams around on back-toback nights, is a test a little bit.

With Dallas Hairfield at the plate, Lamb scored on a passed ball which allowed Maxie to

advance to third, then Hairfield knocked in Maxie on a sacrifice fly to center field.

“I think everybody was kind of shocked,” Johnson said. “It seemed like they were dead and their fans were shocked. But even going in to our dugout, it was kind of like, ‘What just happened?’ We didn’t expect to do that. But then they came right out and we just made so many mistakes early on in the game that cost us later in the game.”

In the Hawk first, Peebles scored the first of his two runs in the game on a botched pickoff attempt. Seth Keller reached on a single to left field and stole second and third. Brett Alvis walked. Cole Elrod singled in Keller. One out later, Nolan Williamson hit a single to center field to drive in Alvis and Elrod and make the score 4-3.

MECHANICSVILLE — Mills Godwin and Mechanicsville put on a good, old-fashioned pitcher’s duel Wednesday night.

And as pitcher’s duels often go, it was one lone moment that made the difference in a 3-2 Mustangs home victory.

Godwin pitcher Garrett Mason was dealing early as he kept the Mustangs offense off-balance.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Mustangs second baseman Trevor Loving was finally able to connect.

The University of Lynchburg commit blasted a 2-run homer over the right field fence to give Mechanicsville a 3-2 lead that would stand the rest of the way.

R-MC student wins national equestrian title

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE — King William’s Caitlyn Giese wasn’t just horsing around when she represented RandolphMacon at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Thursday.

The rising junior, who grew up in King William but attended Hanover High School, brought the Yellow Jacket equestrian team its first national championship. Giese won the Novice Flat division at the Nationals, which were held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center on the first day of the competition, which ended Sunday.

Giese, who rides Hunter style (as opposed to Western style), performed a series of maneuvers with her mount to demonstrate her equitation skills. She caught the equitation bug from her mother, Gail Giese.

“I started riding when I was 4 years old,” the younger Giese said. “My mom, she got me into it. She’s been riding since she was a young age — around 10.

So she was riding at the time still and, you know, I did the basic pony rides that every kid does at the fairs and stuff. And I really enjoyed it. So she started letting me do lessons and I’ve been rid-

The daughter of the owner of the farm where Giese boarded her now-retired mount, Eureka Springs, had once competed as an equestrian at RandolphMacon.

“She loved going here,” Giese said. “She was on the winning team here at Macon and she pushed me to come to the school. So I toured and automatically fell in love, and I knew I wanted to stay close to home.

And this was, like, 35 minutes from home. It’s a small community and everybody was very welcoming, so I decided to go with Randolph-Macon.

“Being local, I knew John West, the (head) coach, from the different horse shows and I knew that I fit well with his program that he was doing.”

Giese is majoring in business administration with a minor in communications, but she has no plans to end her equestrian career when she graduates.

“I definitely will keep riding,” she said. “Hopefully, out of college I can get my own horse again, and I definitely will do the local shows around here.”

“Offensively it was a team effort,” Kane said. “Peebles and Keller did a great job of getting on base all night and the middle of our lineup drove them in.

Wade Shepherd hit a big double late that started the rally which ended up scoring the go-ahead run.”

Peebles finished the game with three hits in four at-bats — including a pair of doubles.

Keller and Deshazo each went 2-of-2.

The Hawk pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, with Huesman starting with three, middle reliever Marcus Van Alstine getting five and Rohr closing out with four.

Mechanicsville wasn’t done after Hanover took a 9-6 lead.

“We cut down our errors, we probably win the game,” Johnson said. “Even though we lost, we competed at a high level. I think we showed not only everybody else, but I think we showed ourselves that we can compete with anybody else.”

R-MC falls to Roanoke in ODAC tournament

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND — Thirdseeded Randolph-Macon’s baseball team hosted No. 6 Roanoke in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship tournament Sunday and Monday.

As parties go, there was plenty happening, but the Yellow Jackets were left to clean up after the party while the Maroons left Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park doing all the celebrating.

Roanoke won the best-ofthree series opener Sunday 8-4 in a marathon 12-inning effort, then took advantage of four Randolph-Macon errors when the series resumed Monday to win the second game 7-3.

Now the Yellow Jackets are at the mercy of the NCAA Division III tournament committee. They must be awarded an at-large bid for their season to continue.

In the series opener, Randolph-Macon gave up six runs in the 12th inning, nullify-

ing a strong seven-inning start by pitcher Drew Ramos and ending in a disappointing 8-4 loss.

Ramos took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning when, with two outs, a fielding error allowed Roanoke third baseman Mason Staz to reach first base.

Maroon left fielder Jeb Byerley followed up with a home run to right field for two unearned runs. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the eighth inning on a Myles Webb sacrifice fly.

The Yellow Jacket bullpen held up through the 11th inning, then mistakes piled up for a six-run Roanoke 12th.

In the second game Monday, mistakes cost the Yellow Jackets dearly. Roanoke’s first run came on a wild pitch in the third inning. One error and two outs later, Owen Lawn hit a home run that brought in three unearned runs.

The Maroons added three more runs in the fifth, one unearned.

Mason finished his night with 4 innings pitched, two hits, two earned runs and 12 strikeouts.

However, Mustangs senior Dallas Hairfield outdueled his fellow ace with a six-inning gem in which he scattered five hits and struck out six.

He didn’t surrender a run after the second inning.

Hairfield’s biggest moment of the night came in the top of the second inning after finding himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs and the score tied at 1. The senior right-hander and Longwood University commit was able to get a few key groundouts and escape the inning down just 2-1.

Hairfield said he relished being on the mound in a game where his team couldn’t afford

“I love pitcher’s duels,” he said. “It makes me work hard, it makes [Mason] work hard. At the end of the day, it makes us both better.

2,000 new Cub Scouts joined their Scout Council last fall, and they ended with 240 different scout troops and Cub Scout packs across their 24 counties.

The Heart of Virginia had 200 Eagle Scouts last year who contributed a total of 37,000 combined community service hours. In addition, 15% more youth are involved in scouting today than they were this time last year.

“The pandemic fears have eased somewhat, and we are seeing lots of families who want to get the kids involved in our programs,” Givler said. “We feel like it’s because we offer great outdoor programs for families, and we’re teaching values in the Scouting Law that are as relevant today as they were 50 years ago.”

changed attitudes regarding how we treat Mother Earth in those five decades since the inaugural environmental protest. The results are not just anecdotal.

A simple drive southward on I-95 from Richmond to Petersburg is only one example of how environmental regulations have cleaned a once dirty skyline, dotted with numerous smokestacks emitting a multitude of pollutants.

Many of those structures are gone, and the remaining ones sit dormant. A short distance away, the James River also benefitted from increased environmental awareness and a renewed respect for the earth around us.

Portions of the river that were once off limits in my younger years now provide infinite opportunities for recreation for the metro area, and native birds, fish and animals have returned to the waterway.

A friend of mine planned to spend Earth Day 2022 in a pair of waders cleaning trash from a small tributary that flows in to the James River, and she reminded me that this Earth Day is still important, perhaps even more critical at a time when society seems pre-occupied with other issues.

Michael Andrews Jr., Battlefield District Chairman, discussed some of the accomplishments achieved locally as well as challenges overcome with the pandemic.

The realities of the pandemic illustrated the importance of in-person scouting, Andrews said. Despite these challenges, with the help of technology and their exceptional volunteers, they were able to host virtual scouting programs.

“What a perfect real life example that is to teach our scouts, is that adversity is something that we each face, day in and day out,” Andrews said. “And these experiences have truly hammered home the scouting models for being prepared.”

Since the start of the pandemic, local scouts have attained a total of 450 rank achievements. Their district advancement

It’s a message some Americans are experiencing firsthand. Water levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell, two of the nations largest reservoirs, are at historically low levels.

That decrease in water reduces the amount of energy produced as levels decrease. Water from these reservoirs fuel agricultural production in many midwestern states.

It’s a small example of how some problems can’t be ignored, and solutions cannot be delayed. Earth Day 2022 reminds us all that safeguarding the planet is job one for all generations. It’s a never-ending effort that perhaps, doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves, but is more needed today than ever.

“Despite challenges like the pandemic, as mentioned, we just need necessary contributions to the Heart of Virginia Council which will enable these local districts like ours to support volunteers, so we can deliver a safe, positive scouting program to youth in our community,” Hurd said.

just how important the Hanover County school system is, consider this: the school budget accounts for about 37% of the total Hanover County budget! These funds are an investment in our future and our children.

It is imperative that board leadership be composed of individuals of diverse backgrounds and expertise.

A candidate seeking to serve on the school board needs to have the wisdom, business experience, financial background and the vision to guide the school board through the future.

Hanover County has a unique opportunity to capitalize on the availability of a community leader who meets these requirements and who is motivated to serve. Candidate John Redd is aware of the challenges of serving our community as a school board member. He has served on the school board, representing the Cold Harbor District from 1980 through 1984.

He has the background and business skills and experience that is necessary for this position of immense responsibility. Mr. Redd holds an

accounting degree from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in Taxation from VCU. He has been a CPA in public practice since 1973. In 1984, Mr. Redd started a CPA firm in Mechanicsville and has operated a profitable CPA business in the community from that time.

His social and business contacts afford him the opportunity to be in touch with many members of the community. As a result, Mr. Redd is in tune with community concerns and community sentiment. This, along with his expansive expertise, should be of immeasurable value to the school board and the community at large.

A leader’s position in the community should reflect his involvement in and his commitment to that community. A number of years ago, Mr. Redd served for two terms as president of Mechanicsville Businessmen’s Association. He is a life-long Hanover County resident and a graduate of Lee-Davis High School.

I’d also proffer that family should be an integral part of leadership credentials. Family commitment to education and to service to the community is evidenced in his wife,

Terry’s, prior service as a teacher in the Hanover school system. He has the unique opportunity to receive the counsel of a former teacher on issues confronting the school board.

I’ll call this arrangement “Team Redd.”

Redd is that individual who is well qualified to serve our students, to guide the trajectory of the school board and to facilitate and ensure the continuing excellence of the Hanover School system.

I urge those who support Mr. Redd to reach out to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and to Mechanicsville District Supervisor Peterson indicating your support of Mr. Redd. Supervisor Peterson (email address: wcpeterson@ hanovercounty.gov) will be reviewing the candidate’s qualifications and it will be his recommendation of the most qualified candidate to the full board.

to 10 students in Hanover County from Atlee High School, Hanover High School, Mechanicsville High School, Patrick Henry High School, The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology and Randolph-Macon College.

Every year, the Faire’s scholarship committee reaches out to career counselors at the public high schools, the principal at the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology and the College Advancement Department at R-MC with the scholarship’s amount and criteria. Counselors then select which student best suits each catered scholarship based on their qualifications and aspirations.

Despite a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Faire Committee was able to distribute $12,000 in scholarships in 2021 without dipping into the general funds needed for the 2022 Faire. Even without holding the event, organizers raised funds through various fundraising activities and donations from the community, businesses, churches, committee members and vendors.

The reception, which was held at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, began by presenting a few sponsors with plaques and gifts of

appreciation. This year’s recognized sponsors in attendance were the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, Town of Ashland, The Local, Mega Walsh, Food Lion and Village Bank.

Lorie Foley, executive director of The Faire, presented this year’s scholarships. Nine of the scholarships are given in memory of three of the founding members of the Faire.

The Tafi Yourtee Scholarship is given in memory of founding member Tafi Yourtee, who appeared on Broadway and later took residence in Ashland. She continued her acting career through local theater groups such as Barksdale and Swift Creek and held a passion for finding new talent.

This year’s recipients were Lynn-Lee Williamson (Patrick Henry High), Caroline Berry (Hanover High), Nedra Matia Ford (Atlee High) and Sophia Lynn (Mechanicsville High).

Williamson will be attending Hollins University to continue her education in the performing arts. She credited her mom with encouraging her to pursue theater at a young age, where she “fell in love with stage performing.” She performed in productions throughout middle school and high school.

“My patience and hard work has paid off, and I get to move on to the two things I love most – singing and acting,” she told the crowd, which

was followed by a round of applause.

She thanked the Strawberry Faire Scholarship Committee for awarding her a scholarship.

Ford will be pursuing her musical career at Shenandoah University Conservatory and has performed in a variety of musical theater productions inside and outside of high school.

“I hope to not only continue studying and performing for the next four years of college but hopefully, after college, I will be performing for the rest of my life,” Ford said.

Lynn could not attend the reception due to a school conflict but provided an impressive singing tape that was played for attendees along with a heartfelt message of appreciation to the scholarship committee.

Lynn will be attending the University of Southern California as a music industry major. She wrote that the arts have played a “huge role” in her life, as she participated in many community theater productions, school choirs and select honors choirs throughout her high school career.

“I hope to uplift musicians and make my mark on the music industry, and this scholarship will certainly help me do so,” Lynn wrote. “I admire your mission, and I am so grateful to have been selected.”

The Jay Pace Scholarship is given in memory of founding member J. Malcom Pace, a Randolph-Macon College alumni and former reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Pace eventually transitioned to the role of editor and publisher of The Herald-Progress and enjoyed mentoring many aspiring reporters as they began their journalism careers.

Four high school students who plan to major in journalism received this scholarship.

Lucy Henning (Atlee High), Carl Chittum (Patrick Henry High), Jacob Estes (Mechanicsville High) and Alyssa Lawhorn (Hanover High) were this year’s recipients of Jay Pace scholarships.

“I want to thank everyone for this scholarship, and I am so honored to receive it,” said Henning during her acceptance speech. She will be attending Virginia Tech to pursue her dream of becoming a sports broadcaster for ESPN. Chittum said he “fell in love with the idea of film” while taking a television production class and will be attending either Bowling Green State University or Appalachian State University in pursuit of a film career.

Lawhorn will pursue a major in history and minor in communication studies at Hollins University.

She has served as editor in chief and

other roles on her school’s yearbook staff and was “grateful to have met so many young journalists” over the years.

The Norman Bugge Scholarship is given in memory of Norman Bugge and awarded to a student attending Hanover Center for Trades and Technology. Bugge worked for the Verizon telephone company and volunteered his time to help build the Faire’s stage, wire the electrical panel and offered other helpful services.

This year’s Bugge Scholarship was awarded to Chloe Lowery. She will be attending Virginia Tech in pursuit of a career in electric engineering.

The Richard S. Gillis Jr. Scholarship is given in memory of founding member and former R-MC student “Dick” Gillis. He served as the mayor of Ashland, coining the town’s slogan as “Center of the Universe,” and later served on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.

The scholarship is given to a student majoring in political science at Randolph-Macon College. Mason Denseley was gifted this year’s scholarship.
