Transgender policy dominates public comment at recent school board meeting

By Jim Ridolphi For The Mechanicsville Local Parents, students and supporters of the LGBGT community pulled no punches earlier this month when addressing certain members of the Hanover County School Board regarding recent actions taken by the board affecting transgender students.

The targets of their ire were members who voted last month to allow Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to act as a legal consultant regard-

ing the county’s transgender student policy. That group has offered free legal aid to Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS), but many who spoke during the April 12 public comment period made it clear they felt the advice was worth little more than the fee charged. Other speakers praised the board’s decision last month to engage with ADF, which was approved by a 4-3 vote with John Axselle, Steven Ikenberry, Bob May and George Sutton voicing the see POLICY, pg. 5

Bob Lindgren, the President of Randolph-Macon College (RMC), stepped forward to offer his gratitude to Goodman on behalf of all students and faculty. Goodman has worked closely with RMC to improve the safety of the campus community over the years.

“We’re so very, very grateful for your leadership,” Lindgren said. “We’re honored that… you kept our community safe and the way that you have led all of the men and women who work with you to demonstrate your values as well.”

“He embodies what justice is,” said Pat Hunter-Jordan, the president of the Hanover NAACP. “We knew when anything came up, it was a simple phone call.”

Hunter-Jordan and others, including Virginia State Police officers, presented Goodman with custom plaques as a token of their appreciation. A gift table sat outside of the event room for other attendees to place their gifts as well.

Faye Prichard, the Ashland supervisor on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, offered her own touching remarks. She said Goodman joined APD during a difficult time of turmoil for the Ashland community.

“It is not possible that anybody turned the culture around the way that he did,” Prichard said. “And he changed it by changing hearts and minds and by meeting each person where

Out of the many speeches given, Goodman was overwhelmingly praised for his humility, exceptional leadership and community-oriented policing. He held a steadfast dedication to strengthening relationships with community leaders, fostering a just environment and dutifully aiding any resident in need.

Goodman first announced his retirement in January and officially retired on Friday, April 22 from law enforcement after 29 years of service with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Ashland Police Department (APD).

Goodman first served the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office for over 14 years and reached the rank of Lieutenant.

He said he was “blessed” to serve under former Hanover County Sheriff Col. Stuart Cook and Col. David Hines, who served as Lieutenant Colonel at the time.

“They gave me so many opportunities for education and to expand my horizons as a law enforcement leader,” Goodman said.

He said the next logical step in his career was to pursue the opportunity to lead an agency and was given the opportunity by then Town of Ashland Manager Charles Hartgrove in 2007 during a “pivotal turning point” in the department, he said.

appointed to the Chief ’s position on July 1, 2008.

“I came here at a time where we were able to have such community support and council support,” Goodman said. “We were able to kind of shoot ourselves out of a cannon, if you will, with a lot of improvements in a very short amount of time.”

Among the various notable achievements by APD includes reaching Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in 2008, which the department maintains to this day. APD is one of only 35 agencies in the Commonwealth to maintain CALEA accreditation and is the smallest municipal police department to do so.

Under Goodman’s leadership, the agency has also won multiple state and national awards for data-driven approaches to crime and traffic safety. APD secured over $1 million in grant funding that

enabled the department to become one of the first agencies in the Richmond region to deploy officer-worn cameras to every patrol officer and to equip them with other law enforcement technologies.

Among Goodman’s most impactful work in and with the community includes his engagement with community leaders to decrease blight and improve conditions at several long-term stay motels along Ashland’s I-95 and Route 1 corridors.

He also worked with community members to form the Ashland Police Foundation and partnered with RMC and Reynolds Community College over the years to create a Cadet program aimed at recruiting officers that mirror the demographics of Ashland’s community.

Goodman said he has been “blessed” to work with the exceptional staff of APD and that none of his achievements are his own.

“Any success of APD that’s attributed to me is because of them,” Goodman said. “It’s easy for me to be the face, but I have not done it on my own…

We have an incredible staff of law enforcement professionals, both sworn in and civilian in the agency.”

Looking back, Goodman said it is challenging to pinpoint a single most memorable experience during his time as Chief, as he holds countless memorable experiences serving the Town of Ashland.

“Most of my memorable experiences would never make the front page of any newspaper,” he said. “But they were memorable to me. Whether we were able to help a citizen out… solve a crime, especially one that was affecting our community in a significant way.”

After a careful search by Town Manager Josh Farrar, a hiring advisory committee and feedback from the public, Major Troy Aronhalt has been

selected to succeed Goodman as Ashland’s new Chief of Police.

Goodman said he is extremely pleased with the Town’s investment in succession planning and that the selection of Aronhalt displays how the department is headed in the right direction of providing the services that the community wants.

“I wouldn’t retire if I didn’t think that Chief Aronhalt, Captain Shelhorse and Captain Kemp… could not continue to lead this agency into the future,” Goodman said during his farewell speech at the reception. “My guess is that they will be doing it bigger and better than I ever have been in less than three months.”

Goodman said while he is proud of his contributions to the Town and will miss the daily presence of his staff, he looks forward to spending more time with his family moving forward.

Arrest made in narcotics case by HCSO

On April 18, investigators with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office executed a residential search warrant located in the 8000 block of Darva Glen. This search warrant was obtained based on the results of an extensive investigation.

During the execution of the search warrant, James Carey Sullenberger, 39, of Mechanicsville was arrested and charged with the following crimes: possession of Methamphetamine, possession

of a firearm while in possession of Methamphetamine, possession of a sawed-off rifle, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and possession of a concealed weapon.

Furthermore, as a result of this search warrant, dozens of firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition and suspected illegal narcotics were recovered from Sullenberger’s residence.

James Sullenberger was transported to Pamunkey Regional Jail and is being held without bond.

Arrest made in breaking and entering case

HARRIS

On Monday, March 28, deputies responded to a breaking and entering that occurred at 5181 Cold Harbor Road, Chickahominy Market.

Investigators worked diligently on this case and quickly developed a suspect. On April 20, in cooperation with regional law enforcement partners, investigators located and arrested Antonio Lopez Harris.

He was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny.

Harris is currently being held without bond at Pamunkey Regional Jail.

Even though an arrest has been made, investigators are still seeking information from our community. Based on surveillance footage from the business, it is believed that there may have been multiple individuals who witnessed this incident that may not have realized the details of the crime at the time.

Patrick Henry High School hosts mental health awareness 5k Run

The Speak Up Club at Patrick Henry High School hosted a 5K during the Flexible Learning Day on April 18 with proceeds being donated to the Suicide Awareness Foundation. Despite the day’s rainy and cold weather, 75 runners showed up to run or walk the course. Students and community members gathered at the finish line dancing to the DJ’s music and cheering on the runners and walkers as they arrived. This 5k was dreamed up and organized by students to raise awareness to mental health.

“Given that fostering community relationships and building an agency of integrity has been a cornerstone of Chief Goodman’s leadership, I couldn’t be prouder that his successor and Ashland Police Department’s next leader comes from within the agency’s own ranks,” said Farrar. “This town and the officers of APD will be in excellent hands under the capable leadership of Major Aronhalt.”

A number of speakers also expressed displeasure with the board’s failure to comply with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) mandated model transgender policy that allows students to use bathrooms appropriate for their identities.

Ann Zweckbronner, a Cold Harbor resident and the mother of a transgender student said, “I have spent seven years fighting for my childs’ rights in your schools. I have been scared every day she goes to school, and you are responsible for that,” she said. “The buck stops with you.”

Zweckbronner told board members that not allowing transgender students to use the bathroom to which they identify fails to keep all Hanover students safe.

“It is safer for transgender students to use the bathroom of their chosen identity,” she continued. “Don’t tell me that you are worried about the safety of my child ….. because that’s not true.”

“Serving under Chief Goodman and working within this community for the last 24 years means a great deal to me personally and professionally,” Aronhalt said. “I am honored to serve as Ashland’s next chief of police and look forward to continuing and expanding our focus on communityoriented policing and upholding the highest levels of professionalism at all times.”

Aronhalt joined the Ashland Police Department on Jan. 2, 1998, as a patrol officer and proceeded to rise through the ranks, achieving the rank of major and being named deputy chief in 2021.

“We know you are meeting in closed session and granting bathroom privileges to certain transgender students,” Zweckbronner said. “It’s not fair and cruel not to grant this to every transgender student. Just because one transgender student comes with an attorney and threatens federal lawsuit doesn’t make it more important than any other transgender student at the schools,” she said.

Five families of transgender students filed suit regarding the failure of the board to adopt a policy that allows transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.

“We want a policy that follows the law,” Zweckbronner said.

Kelly Merrill of Ashland and also the parent of transgender child addressed members of the board who voted to engage with ADF at last month’s meeting.

“The jig is up,” she said.

“We know who you are now unequivocally. You can try to slide controversial items in the consent agenda and try to sit silently and not speak as you explain yourselves and you meet with a hate group for school policy. You seem to fancy yourselves as emperors and I’m here to tell you that you have no clothes,” Merrill continued.

She contended school board members are not seeking input from both sides and dismissed the claims of some school board members that much of the controversy has been initiated by “outside agitators.”

“You are facing the wrath of hundreds of Hanover residents who are furious at you for not allowing policies that will protect all of our children,” Merrill said.

She pointed our the suicide rate among transgender kids is 42%.

Merrill said she has joined with the ACLU in an effort to implore board members to hear the voices of those who support the model transgender policy outlined by VDOE. She joined other parents in issuing invitations to board members to meet with trans-

ership program at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia (Fall 2022 anticipated).

Chief Doug Goodman, whose last day with the Ashland Police Department was Friday, April 22, announced his retirement in January 2022 after more than 14 years of service with the Town. Shortly after Goodman’s announcement, Farrar initiated a search process for Ashland’s next chief of police, which included input from the community as well as the formation of a hiring advisory committee.

She also expressed her views regarding parental rights. “I don’t think I ever contemplated as a parent that I would not be paramount in the decision making of all decisions pertaining to my children, particularly in school,” Messe said. “Parental rights are constitutionally protected.Why is that? Because parents know their children best.

They know their needs best.”

Hanover resident Rebecca Holte agreed. “Virginia parents made their decision on Election

Holte also made specific comments directed at the school board. “Thank you for standing strong to protect our parental rights, our young girls’ safety and privacy and also for seeking expert legal advice from ADF. And thank you for standing strong to protect families and parents in Hanover County.”

Regarding the repeated requests of the transgender community to accept and listen to the opinions of experts on gender identity and other support groups, one speaker issued a clear statement exhibiting her opinion on their viability.

“You have heard many people ask you to listen to the experts regarding gender identity,” Hanover resident Sarah Via said. “They are not experts.

They are elevated activists and advocates with a very specific agenda. We can tell it’s not just helping their children get through school with the one on one approvals. They want the policy,” Via added.

Earth Day, making a difference every day of the year

By Christina Amano Dolan Editor ommunities worldwide participated in a globally-recognized holiday last week that calls us to reflect on the contributions we make to our environment. But while it’s good that Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22, the mission behind it can’t be reduced to a single day’s festivities.

It is important to consider how we, both as individuals and as the community of Hanover County, follow our own green initiatives in our everyday lives – especially with today’s growing climate crisis.

The world’s first Earth Day was held in 1970, and the movement has increased dramatically through the years. It is difficult to imagine how a majority of the public, not very long ago, was unaware of the effects of air pollution on the environment and public health. The seeds for the rapidly growing movement were planted, how-

ever, with 20 million Americans taking to the streets that April 22 to protest the impacts of 150 years of industrial development. By 1990, over 200 million people in 141 countries observed the holiday and environmental issues were officially cast onto the world stage, according to Earthday. org.

Despite the massive strides that worldwide governments and communities have taken over the years, environmental issues, of course, cannot disappear overnight and have been worsening in a number of ways – particularly in terms of waste.

According to a study by Verisk Maplecroft that measured the recycling performance of 194 countries, over 2.1 billion tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are generated globally each year, which is enough to fill roughly 822,000 Olympicsized swimming pools. The study showed that only 16% of this is recycled each year, or 323 million tons, while 950 million tons is disposed of unsustainably.

If that isn’t upsetting enough, according to the same study’s Recycling Index, the United States only recycles 35% of its MSW while Germany, which holds the world’s most efficient record on waste management, recycles 68%.

The study suggests that this global waste crisis is primarily driven by a rise in plastics.

According Earthday.org, plastic pollution has worsened since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as an increase in take-out orders has driven up the amount of single-use plastics used globally. And when you think about all of those packages zooming straight to our front doors, think about this: each year, enough bubble wrap is created globally to cover the distance between the earth and the moon. Add that to the more than 50 billion coffee cups that are thrown away and more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts that are littered around the world. Every minute, two garbage trucks of plastic are dumped into the oceans, totaling about 8 million metric tons, and see EARTH, pg. 7

Moving on: leaving behind a lifetime of memories

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I couldn’t remember the last time the old house on Cutshaw Place stood empty. I suppose it was back in the early 1950s when we first moved in the small brick Cape Cod located near Willow Lawn. In those

days, we didn’t have an abundance of furniture and the rooms seemed large and unfilled to small prying eyes.

As I sat on one of the many boxes stacked and ready to move last week, I realized it was once again empty and a sense of sadness descended upon me.

Reader condemns Biden administration What’s going on with the Letters to the Editor in the Mechanicsville Local? Where are they? Does no concerned voter out there have anything to say as to the condition of our country and the direction it’s headed in?

How about some letters from the Biden supporters showing their support for the current administration?

There were plenty of letters prior to the 2020 election warning voters of what horrible fate would befall the country if Trump were actually able to win. Economic chaos would run rampant and minorities would be put back into chains. We would be under totalitarian rule. The United States would be the laughing stock of the entire world. Life on Earth as we knew it would go the way of the dinosaurs.

History shows that after Trump’s successful, albeit surprising win in 2016, the United States didn’t actually collapse as predicted. On the contrary, we had four years of decent economic growth. Wage increases across the board for blue collar workers of all races and colors, low inflation, illegal border crossings were decreasing as the wall was being built, we became energy independent, tax cuts, no new military interventions and a peace treaty between Israel and a number of Middle Eastern countries. The list goes on.

Was everything just sunshine and flowers? No. The Trump administration had its share of bumps in the road, but as a whole I believe most people would have said that they were better off when Trump left office compared to when he took see LETTERS, pg. 7

Registration open for Youth Citizen’s Police Academy The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office will once again host the Youth Citizen’s Police Academy. The Youth Citizen’s Police Academy will take place from June 20 through June 24.

This academy will begin each day at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. There will be no cost to participants.

This program will be available to students who are rising ninth through 12th graders.

This academy is designed to give the youth of Hanover County a chance to see the day-to-day operations of their sheriff ’s office and will allow participants to interact with the men and women of the sheriff ’s office. The academy

will also offer the participants an inside look into a career in law enforcement. The training will consist of a variety of law enforcement topics that will give the youth a better understanding of how and why the members of the Sheriff ’s Office do what they do.

That was almost seven decades ago, but as we emptied every nook and cranny in the house, reminders of those early days were routinely revealed. As anyone who has moved from a long-term residence can attest, some of the most interesting items are found stuck in the drawer of an old dresser or discarded in the back of a closet.

we first came to town. Laying beside it was a clouded plastic remnant of a key ring from Emrick Chevrolet, where he bought his first new car, a 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne with a three speed transmission on the column.

Tucked away in the roof of one of the eaves I discover an old photo of the Class of 1965 of John Randolph Tucker High School. I recognized my sister and some of her friends from that first graduating class.

I collected similar items in a box as we moved box after box of dishes, books. Looking down at the items in the box, I realized that collectively, they may appear as random junk to any onlooker. But, each represented a small portion of the history of Cutshaw, a legacy of family, friends and memories.

It also became abundantly

apparent the house would never be defined by its contents, and the true history of the house could better be told by the generations who occupied it.

For example, consider the number of children who called Cutshaw home. My sister and I were the first group to live our formative years there, and my four children all have associations with the residence.

The old house has seen its share of celebrations and also a stinging dose of tribulation and loss. Far too few years passed from the time we arrived until the day we lost my father, but the home embraced us during those difficult days that followed.

Years later, it stood solemnly steady as I carried my mother out of the front door to a waiting ambulance in what would be her last trip down the walk-

way.

The silence of a summer night years later provided more excitement at the old address when my daughter Emma decided she would forego the delivery room and make her appearance on the bathroom floor.

So many memories.

As I sat there in that empty living room, I also had another thought. Perhaps, this old house will gift another family with the immeasurable amount of love and memories that it has provided my family.

Perhaps, those old wooden floors will once again welcome tiny galloping feet or provide the warmth of Christmas morning to new faces with new dreams and possibilities.

For almost seven decades, it served this family well and I’ll miss it like an old friend.

Virginia, including the city of Richmond, held the second highest recycling rate out of 17 others reported. In a 2020 report, the DEQ reported that Virginia’s average recycling rate increased from the year before.

So we are making strides in both the county and state in managing our waste, but the battle is far from being won.

I’m sure I haven’t been the only observer of the growing movement over social media calling for a global cleanup and scientists heeding warnings that the world is ending.

While these warnings may point to a less-than-hopeful future, there is plenty of room for us to adjust simple habits in our everyday lives.

Some of these methods include minor adjustments such as picking up trash or plastic on daily walks or runs, limiting plastic consumption, carrying reusable grocery bags to the grocery store or greater

endeavors like organizing a community cleanup or growing an organic garden.

The county’s website also offers an assortment of helpful information for residents to manage waste and recycle responsibly and holds semiannual recycling events for specific hazardous material, with a hazardous waste recycling event held on April 9 and an electronic waste recycling event held on April 23.

A similar event will be held this upcoming fall surrounding America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.

While Earth Day has come and gone, it never hurts to promote environmentallyconscious habitats outside of the holiday. From truly taking a step back to evaluate how we are taking care of our planet, we can begin to spark meaningful change in today’s climate crisis and make a difference every day of the year.

While these statistics can be terrifying, it is important to analyze the way we handle waste at a macro level in order to provide perspective. How, in our everyday lives, are we contributing to this piling waste crisis?

According to 2019 and 2020 annual recycling reports released by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Hanover County and surrounding counties actually have higher recycling rates than many other localities in the Commonwealth.

In addition to the base rate of pay and other benefits, such as a flexible schedule, medical benefits and paid training, bus drivers who join the HCPS team between now and September will earn $500 after their first 60 days of employment and $500 at the end of the first semester of next school year.

opening of this store, we can take Arc of Hanover to a much higher level than we have ever been before,” said Pam Bishop, vice president of The Arc of Hanover, to the crowd during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“Prior to this, we have served a small group of individuals in Hanover County. We want to serve the entirety of Hanover County.”

The Arc of Hanover is a nonprofit organization based in Ashland and is one of nearly 700 national Arc chapters. First established in 1974, The Arc of Hanover is the leading advocacy, service and awareness organization for citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Hanover County.

According to its website, The Arc of Hanover serves over 200 individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities in the county through

advocacy, information and support programs. They also assist neighboring localities with information and referrals.

The organization is volunteer-based and run by a volunteer board of directors. Teelo Rutledge, president of The Arc of Hanover, said they received help from at least 100 community volunteers in the nine months of preparing for the new thrift store’s opening. In addition, students from the four Hanover County high schools volunteered their services for a day to help with inventory and pricing.

The new thrift store, which was formerly the Green Top Building, is comprised of 7,000 square feet of retail space along with additional warehouse space for inventory and the new Tools 4 Teachers offices.

Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF) to donate school supplies to teachers for schoolchildren in need.

All items in the thrift store are donated either by community members, local businesses or derived from television and movie sets filmed locally.

According to Bishop, a majority of the items in the store’s main retail space, which features high-end furniture and antiques, were donated from the set of “Raymond and Ray,” an upcoming Apple TV comedy-drama film starring Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. The store acquired over 100 unique lamps from the set, office furniture and even law books that were featured in the movie.

Many of the store’s items were also donated from the television set of the popular Hulu series “Dopesick,” such as an entire row of customized curtains, and AMC’S “The Walking Dead” spinoff series filmed in Richmond.

The thrift store also includes a fully-stocked clothing section for children, teens and adults, with a majority of the clothing items from the sets of “Raymond and Ray”

Bishop said donations have come in abundance ahead of the thrift store’s official opening, with many items stocked in inventory and yet to hit the shelves. She said that no items in the store will end up in a landfill. The Arc plans to repurpose any unsold items by donating them to Ashland Christian Emergency Services (ACES), RVA New Beginnings, or other current and future nonprofit organizations that they partner with.

All proceeds from the thrift store are put toward the store’s operational needs and The Arc of Hanover’s variety of programs. Bishop said they hope

to donate any additional funding to other nonprofit organizations as well.

“The premise of the store is both to make money for the organization, but we also want to train our clients and give them opportunities and a place to come to achieve some self-worth and socialize,” said Rutledge.

According to Rutledge, The Arc of Hanover has been partnering with RandolphMacon College for years to offer a unique program for intellectually disabled college students called Minding Class.

He said they hope to establish an internship program for students in the class that will offer

them the chance to operate the store and participate in a social atmosphere.

“By supporting the store, you’re supporting our programming for our clients and members,” Rutledge said.

“They are the most innocent of our citizens if you think about it… It’s an endless bucket of things that we could do for them and services we can provide.”

One of the primary services that The Arc of Hanover provides is advocacy services on an individual, local and state level, such as attending and participating in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, local school board meetings and working with the county’s state senators and delegates to influence policies.

Volunteers also help individuals with developmental disabilities and their family members identify available

resources and secure needed support, such as helping in preparation for assessments or informing them of their rights.

They also provide training and scholarships for parents and staff who work with this population and offer summer camp scholarships to their clients.

In collaboration with several local organizations, The Arc of Hanover provides recreation, respite and community events to promote socialization, health and independence among their clients. Other programs offered include a reading club that meets regularly at The Arc of Hanover’s office or local libraries and the “Saturday Sitters” program, which hires teachers and aids from the school district to provide respite for parents and caregivers on Saturdays. They are currently looking to start up this program again after pausing due to the COVID-19

pandemic.

The Arc of Hanover is gearing up to host its annual Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, May 23, located at The Federal Club, 13450 Palmers Way, Glen Allen. There is a cap on the number of teams that can participate and available slots are filling up fast.

The nonprofit is also seeking volunteers to help run the store and eventually expand the thrift store’s operating hours. Currently the store will be open on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They have yet to set designated donation hours.

Mustang baseball ekes out win at Atlee

In a game that mirrored the two participants’ seasons thus far, the Mechanicsville Mustangs took full advantage of their opportunity, while the Atlee Raiders did not, resulting in a come-from-behind 6-4 win at Atlee Friday night to move the Mustangs to 8-2.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” said Mechanicsville head coach Tyler Johnson.

“We’ve been in dogfights all week. We were both hungry to get back on the field. They played well, and we played well.

We just did a few more things than they did.”

For the Mustangs, it was a matter of not getting down on yourself after watching the Raiders grab a lead that had been held by the Mustangs since the top of the third inning.

Mechanicsville scrapped and clawed its way to a 3-0 lead, beginning with back-toback bunts by Grayson Moore and C.J. DiNapoli which placed each on base. Ethan Serrano’s single scored Moore, then an RBI fielder’s choice from Cam Lamb scored DiNapoli.

Aaron Maxie completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Serrano. It was 3-0 Mustangs. But just as Atlee starter John Best had his struggles in the top of the frame, Mechanicsville’s Sam Owens fought through the bottom of the inning, as the Raiders

Now it was time to finish, and Johnson turned to a familiar face.

Longwood commit Dallas Hairfield toed the rubber for the final two innings. He cruised in the sixth but lost a battle with Sanford to open the seventh, as Chase fouled off pitch after

pitch, then sent a single up the middle.

Hairfield answered with two strikeouts. But Bronson Davis singled, and the potential winning run came to the plate.

The Mustang veteran, however, stood firm, earning a final strikeout and the victory for the Mustangs.

“Once we took the lead, Dallas was our man because he wants the ball in that situation,” Johnson explained. “He’s been building all year, learned a lot already, and 10 games in, he’s been in some big situations.”

For Atlee, now 3-6, the loss ended a two-night period of

heartbreak, after dropping a 2-1 extra-inning affair Thursday against upstart Varina. With the top 12 teams out of 17 in Region 4B qualifying for the postseason, the losses, while hurting the Raiders’ playoff chances, will also give the squad motivation as they move forward with home contests Thursday against Henrico and Friday versus Hanover.

For the Mustangs, the win keeps them within striking distance of current region leader King George, just behind Chancellor and with Hanover breathing down their neck.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND — Hanover’s baseball and softball teams wanted to keep the drama down when the Hawks visited Patrick Henry Friday night.

To make sure that happened, they dominated the Patriots on their respective diamonds.

On the softball diamond, the Hawks downed a scrappy Patrick Henry team 8-0. On the baseball diamond, the Hawks thrashed the Patriots 16-1 in a five-inning beatdown.

In the latter, Hanover hammered its way through five Patrick Henry pitchers, picking up 14 hits along the way.

Hanover head baseball coach Tyler Kane said the Patriot pitchers were tough, but the Hawks, after facing some of the top pitching in the nation during a spring break tournament in North Carolina at the beginning of April, have good approaches at the plate.

“Patrick Henry has Patrick Brizendine. He’s a junior lefty and he’s really tough. He throws mid-80s with a really good changeup and curveball,” Kane said. “But he threw the night before, and so Sammy (Sam Hart, Patrick Henry’s head coach) staffed the game against us. He had some guys that were really competitive — low 80s, decent breaking stuff.

“Our guys had a really good approach throughout the game.

We were hunting fastballs and we challenged them to just be on time with whatever they were looking for. I guess our guys executed the plan and squared up some baseballs.”

‘Mo’ favors Hawks early, Patriots late in draw

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND — “Mo,” or momentum, was a fickle friend Friday night when Hanover’s boys soccer team traveled to Patrick Henry’s pitch for a rivalry-night contest.

“Mo” favored the Hawks in the first 20 minutes of regulation play. Then “Mo” switched allegiances, favoring Patrick Henry the final 20 minutes of regulation play. “Mo” proved totally apathetic in two fiveminute overtimes, leaving the two rivals with a 2-2 draw.

“Typical Hanover rivalry soccer,” is how Patrick Henry head boys soccer coach Chuck Altizer described it.

“We have a problem with Patrick Henry,” said Hanover head boys soccer coach Laurent Body. “Every time we come here it’s real intense.”

The Hawks started strong at

HANOVER ARTS & ACTIVITIES CENTER The Hanover Arts & Activities Center combines rich history with a modern appreciation for the arts and education.

The Town’s oldest church building, originally built in 1859, creates innovative activities and events to bring the community together at 500 S. Center Street.

HANOVER CONCERT BAND ASHLAND MUSEUM The Ashland Museum tells the story of our town through words, images, voices, and objects at 105 Hanover Avenue.
