Hanover Habitat adds King William, Ashland, West Point Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -After 30 years serving Hanover County residents, Hanover Habitat for Humanity is expanding their service area into King William County as part of its vision to ensure everyone has a decent place to live.

The organization’s new name will be Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat operates three key programs in the community, including an affordable homeownership program, critical home repairs, and a ReStore that operates as a nonprofit home improvement store.

Joseph Jones, president of the Board of Directors and vice president at PNC Bank, said, “We are excited to serve even more individuals and look forward to partnering across the

community.”

Hanover County spans 469 square miles of countryside and Richmond suburb. After adding King William’s 274 square miles of rural community, Hanover and King William Habitat will have 743 square miles, 119,547 residences, and 33,788 households.

King William County has a total population of 16,329; 10.9% of those are living below the federal poverty level. In comparison, Hanover County

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor With a grade point average of 4.56176, Courtney Wolfgang led the Mechanicsville High School Class of 2021 as valedictorian.

A Mechanicsville resident, she is the daughter of Kevin Wolfgang and Sharon Wolfgang.

While in high school, Courtney served as president of the Beta Club, vice president of the Senior Class Council, treasurer of the National Honor Society, Faculty Relations coordinator for the SCA, chair of membership for the Spanish Honor Society, and captain for SODA. She was a member of the Interact Club.

In her community, Courtney has been a competitive dancer, as well as dance teacher, at The Dance Company. She interned for Del. Hyland “Buddy” Fowler Jr., R-55. She is involved in her church, Slash Christian Church.

Courtney will be attending the University of Virginia, where she will study Political Philosophy, Policy and Law. She said she hopes to go to law school to either become a lawyer and/or pursue politics.

As for completing her public education, she said, “My high school goal was to always try and do my best, but to also not prevent myself from missing out on the little things. My high school experience was most definitely different with the ongoing pandemic, but that did not stop me from enjoying every minute I had as a senior. My friends and my family made my senior year the best year it could, and I appreciate each and every one of them. With that being said, I plan to attend the University of Virginia and major in Political Philosophy, Policy and Law. In the future, I hope to go to law school to either become a lawyer and/or pursue politics as my career.”

Phillips and Brown take top honors for PHHS graduates

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Daniel Stephen Phillips graduated from Patrick Henry High School as valedictorian with a 4.667 Grade Point Average.

His parents are Stephen and Nicole Phillips of Beaverdam.

At PHHS, Daniel served as National Honor Society president, Science National Honor Society president, and was a member of the National Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta. He also served as Junior Class president, 7thUP Middle School mentor, and South Anna Elementary School Number Ninjas volunteer.

He played the trumpet in the Patrick Henry High School Marching Band and was a section leader, the field commander, and a soloist.

Daniel was a member of the Hanover County Public Schools’ Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and HCPS Return To Learn Committee member.

In his community, Daniel has participated in the Greater Richmond Wind Ensemble at VCU,

Richmond Youth Concert Orchestra, Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSCS, VESSS), All-District Band Trumpet member, HOBY Representative, AIG High School Diplomat (Princeton University), and Meadowgate Alpacas Farm employee.

His future plans include attending The College of William and Mary as a James Monroe Scholar. “I hope to study Physics and Engineering with the goal of working at NASA.” “I feel proud and fortunate to have been a part of the Patrick Henry community and I am grateful for all of the support I received as I reached for my academic goals,” Daniel said. “I am honored to be the valedictorian of such a strong and talented graduating class. With a strong sense of optimism, I look forward to college and my future just as the world is reopening.”

Millan, Woolard lead HHS as valedictorian, salutatorian

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Julian Millan graduated with a 4.60 grade point average to become the valedictorian of Hanover High School.

He is the son of Stephanie Millan of Mechanicsville.

At Hanover High, he was a member of the Debate Club sophomore through senior years, serving as a team captain senior year and winning first place in Regionals. He served as vice president of the Sophomore Class and was Senior Class vice president of School Spirit.

He was a member of the Key Club sophomore through senior years and served as the Junior Class Leader.

Other school involvement includes Robotics Club Design Team Leader, Environmental Club secretary, Latin Club captain, National Honor Society, and National Beta Club.

Julian ran indoor and outdoor track for two years, placing in regional competition and qualifying for state-level competition. He rep-

resented Hanover High School at the 2019 Virginia Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) State Leadership Seminar.

In his community, Julian has volunteered for the Richmond SPCA since 8th grade by serving as a Junior Counselor for the organization’s summer camp (over 200 hours).

He is a member of the Hanover Evangelical Friends Church, where he has been a part of the HEFC Youth Group since 6th grade, most recently serving as the Youth Prayer Leader.

Through his church Youth Group, he helped give out meals to those in need and has gone on multiple mission trips in order to help those affected by natural disasters.

“I have had a neighborhood lawn care business since 10th grade. I also currently work part-time as a front of house team member at Chick-fil-A,” Julian said.

Schuh and Sellors lead Atlee as valedictorian, salutatorian

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Nicola Schuh leads the Atlee High School Class of 2021 as valedictorian with a Grade Point Average of 4.58667.

She is the daughter of Christian Schuh and Ivonne Schuh of Mechanicsville.

Nicola was a member of the German National Honor Society and participated in the IB program.

She will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall “where I hope to major in chemistry and minor in psychology.”

As a student at Atlee High School, Nicola said, “I got know many wonderful people during my time at Atlee and I will continue to carry their influence with me. Atlee is not just a school but a community of caring people that are willing to help you through the high school experience.”

“This year has been more difficult than others, with some students learning online and others in-person, but the Atlee teachers have

persevered while always providing for a positive learning environment,” she said.

“I look forward to attending the University of Virginia in the fall so that I may continue my academic journey with all that Atlee has taught me,” Nicola added.

Atlee’s salutatorian is Ian Sellors, who has a 4.56923 GPA. His parents are Norma and Graham Sellors of Mechanicsville.

While a student at Atlee, Ian served as parliamentarian of the National Beta Club. He also was a member of the National Honor Society, German Honor Society, German Club, Math Team, and Hanover Scholars. He was an IB diploma candidate.

Two-vehicle crash claims life of Ashland woman HANOVER – An Ashland woman was killed Wednesday morning when a 1997 Toyota SUV 2017 she was driving struck a 2017 Ford SUV. Lt. James R. Cooper, public information officer for the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, identified the victim as 22-year-old Tatum Rhianna Wilson of Ashland. She was pronounced dead at the scene in the 15000 block of Washington Highway. The driver of the Ford, Cooper said, was traveling southbound and attempting to turn left into a private drive.

He said the Toyota, traveling northbound,

collided with the Ford. The Toyota then rolled over several times.

The crash took place around 11:54 a.m.

Wilson was the only occupant in the Toyota.

The driver and sole occupant of the Ford was not injured.

“Investigators are still collecting information at this time,” Cooper said.

On behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, Cooper added, “We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Tatum Wilson during this difficult time.”

In Hanover County, the number of households with individuals 65 and older has grown 36% since 2010 and accounts for 18.5% of the population. In King William, 16.3% of the county is age 65 or older. Birthdays still bring out the kid in some

A

good friend was celebrating his birthday last Tuesday (thank you, Facebook, for reminding me of these special occasions).

I posted the obligatory “Happy Birthday” gif, but realized that wasn’t enough for this particular individual. He received the special treatment: A voicemail of “Birthday” by The Beatles.

I let it play in its entirety. No, I didn’t leave a message -- he’ll recognize the phone number.

Birthdays have always been a big deal in my family. The honoree gets to select dinner and

favorite cake, and, yes, there are gifts. As we’ve aged, this tradition has endured.

Dad was like a kid in a candy store when it came time for him to be the guest of honor. At Christmas, it was a toss-up as to who was the worst at trying to sneak a glimpse into packages. Yeah, it was between him and me.

I guess I’ve been thinking more about birthdays than usual. On July 25, I’ll reach one of those milestones in life: No. 65.

So, what does one do for such a significant birthday? This is one of the unique parts of aging: Things/stuff have less importance. And I was a material girl before Madonna released the song.

These days, I cherish the memories of those who are no longer with us, and I try to make the most of the time spent with those who are.

My brother-in-law will be 70 in September and COVID-19 prevented us from giving Mom the celebration she deserves when she reached 90 last November. Maybe a party for three could be on the agenda in the fall.

I’m thankful for the blessings the Lord has bestowed upon me, and that certainly includes bringing me to this community.

We’ll all heard that age is just a number. Well, I say let’s make the most of every number we have.

And then let’s cut some cake.

Smiles abound when children spend time with family

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist They say the best things in life are free. It takes some much longer to come to that realization than others, but most of us eventually come to a reckoning that reinforces the old saying.

It’s not difficult to appreciate the value of good health, good friends and a family that loves you, but it’s easy to forget the little things in life that make it special, meaningful and worth savoring.

My children just returned from Florida where they had been visiting my sister and her family that includes aunts, uncles and cousins. Their visit is not unlike millions taking place in America as the country enjoys simple pleasures that only summer can provide.

Across the country, cousins gather with cousins to invade amusement parks, overflow local pools and consume an unknown number of snow cones, and make memories that remain long after the beach has closed.

My sister, her husband and son and daughter team up to make sure their visits are always filled with adventures and experiences they would not experience at home.

One called mid-week to relay an adventure that I would not have quite frankly associated with her.

“Hey, Dad, I got to hold a baby alligator,” my daughter excitedly said.

And that’s the magic that summer vacations can provide, a unique chance to experience something out of your comfort zone, and there’s always that one uncle that will let you

ride the zip line.

My nephew has updated me all week with photos of the kids having fun. The pictures of all of the kids together tell a story of a week of fun and adventure.

But even more important than the series of adventures and new and interesting venues they visited was the happiness that being with family and a week with cousins can provide.

Dog discarded rather than taken to shelter This letter is for the person who discarded his/her elderly dog like he was just trash.

I will never understand how someone could be so heartless. It’s the same as leaving a defenseless child to fend for him or her.

If you were in dire circumstances and could not keep him, were you so cowardly that you could not bring him to the county shelter to rehome?

I know you do not care about what happened to him because you never made a lost report or came to the shelter to claim him.

He would surely have died if Hanover Animal Control had not found him.

He was by the side of the road. He could not walk.

They rushed him to the emergency vet thinking he’s been hit by a car.

However, being a dachshund, he was suffering from a back issue.

They lovingly cared for him with cage rest and meds until I adopted him.

You see, I am an old rescuer and cannot sit by while a senior dog languishes. He’s mine now.

He is getting all the love and care I can give him for as long as he has left.

When his time comes, I will place him next to the other innocents I have rescued, loved, and lost.

But, I cannot figure out why he walks around my house crying as if he is looking for someone.

It makes me sad to think that he misses you even though you don’t care.

GRAL teams emphasize fun and training

By Rob Witham for The Local MECHANICSILLE – Whether the meet is actual or virtual, whether the swimmer is a novice or most experienced, at Greater Richmond Aquatic League events Wednesday night, a choir of coaches around the area echoed the same theme: Have Fun. In two meets which showcased four Hanover teams, Ashcreek defeated Ashland in a virtual meet 1036-952, while, in person, Hanover Country Club fell to Atlee 1109-663. But the more important story is how area youth are enjoying the opportunity to experience both more of a sense of normalcy than in last year’s abbreviated campaign, and simple childhood fun.

“That’s always the thing for my swimmers is to try their best and go out there and just have fun, which is what I always preach to them,” noted Ashcreek head coach Kaelin Jernigan.

In this, the fourth week of the six-week regular season, competitors are setting their sights on reaching cut times to qualify for Champs, the GRAL’s annual championship event scheduled for July 26 and 27.

Atlee head coach Lacey Kramer noted as much when reviewing her team’s performance against Hanover.

Family tandems also make a difference. For Ashland, the Datovechs combined for seven victories, Christine taking four, including the 15-18 100 butterfly in 1:09.66, the 50 freestyle, equalling her best time at 27.62 and joining older brother Paul, Davis Luck and Mark Dinger to take the 200 medley relay in 2:00.29.

Paul, in his final GRAL season, shaved .28 off his best time in the 100 butterfly, winning in 1:05.06, and a victory in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.46.

The Crocodiles got three wins apiece from Brock and Pierce Rempe. Pierce won the boys 11-12 50 breaststroke in 41.25, and the 100 individual medley in 1:24.00, taking over three and one half seconds off his personal best. Brock was victorious in the boys 15-18 100 IM in 1:02.29, as well as the 50 free in 25.57.

Over at Atlee, Austin Ogden bested his seed time in the boys 8- and-under 100 IM, breaking the two-minute barrier to win in 1:56.22, while also qualifying for the varsity division in the 25 breast, winning with a time of 26.81.

Ava Jones earned junior varsity level with a 43.72 winning time in the girls 9-10 50 backstroke, and just held off teammate Sofia Henderson to win the 50 free in 38.78, a half second better than Henderson’s 39.28. Henderson joined Rory Shelton, Aaron Barden and anchor Mauren Verity to take the 9-10 200 medley relay finishing in 3:14.31.

15-18 boys 100 butterfly, qualifying for senior varsity level by shedding nearly five seconds of his personal best for a time of 58.22. Reagan Brittle took over four seconds off her best time in winning the girls 11-12 50 butterfly in 40.62.

For Hanover, it was a good night for Jerrin Flinchbaugh.

The 8-year old captured the boys 25 free, taking over three seconds off his best time to qualify at the senior varsity level at 17.19, and the 25 butterfly in a new personal best of 24.37 to

earn varsity qualification.

Campbell Derrico took top honors in the 13-14 girls 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.50 to make the senior varsity level, later joining Chance Greene, William Droppleman, and Finn Winegardner to win the 13-14

200 medley relay in 2:09.34.

For all four teams, lots of swimmers produced new personal best times as their quest to qualify for Champs continues.

With two meets to go, attention will turn to achieving that quest, and Jernigan says proper teaching is key, especially for those who did not participate in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“We had to really work on technique a lot more this year, to get them back into the swing of things,” Jernigan said. “How to do the technical things rather than going fast. We want them to do it correctly and do that first before they go quickly.”

But through everything, the common thread is always fun, as noted by Kramer, in trying to give the children some of their life experience back.

“We’ve been doing theme nights every meet to get everyone more engaged with everything,” Kramer said. “At practice, it is crunch time, but I also make sure the kids are having fun.”

Hanover Safe Place is launching a new program for teens in the Hanover community called “Upstanding Youth: Advocates for a Healthy Hanover”.

The teen leadership program is designed to prevent teen dating violence and sexual assault by empowering teens and giving them the skills to create lasting change in their communities. Teens will learn about important social issues affecting their communities. They will then acquire facilitation skills to become leaders by developing a project to address one of these issues.

This year-long program seeks to promote healthy relationships for all youth in

Hanover. This program is free of charge.

The program is open to all high school-aged teens living in Hanover County.

Applications are open now and due by Sept. 1.

Rider program Hanover DASH co-pay returns after one year HANOVER -- Established in December 2019, Hanover DASH is proud to continue providing personalized transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, errands, employment and formal social programs for those 60+ and persons with a disability.

When Hanover DASH celebrated six months of continuous operation on June 12, 2020, our community was in the midst of a global pandemic. Recognizing the financial impacts, Hanover County announced that the usual $6 one-way trip fee would be waived until further notice. This support over the past year has had a significant impact for the program as well as for

the individuals that it serves.

During the first six months of the service (December 2019-June 2020), Hanover DASH had 145 registered riders and provided 608 trips.

As of June 14, 2021 (just over 18 months since the program began), the service has grown to 316 registered riders and has provided a total of 5,556 trips. This growth demonstrates the importance of this service. The majority of trips continue to be for medical appointments and errands but employment also is a growing number of rides.

Currently the actual trip costs range from $24 to $59. In the coming year trip costs are

anticipated to grow.

Beginning July 1, Hanover DASH will reinstate the rider co-pay of $6 per one-way trip.

The continued growth of the program, along with the lessening of COVID restrictions and rising transportation costs, were factors in this decision.

Hanover DASH and Hanover County are committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of this important service to our community and appreciates the willingness of riders to support the service in this way.

Several other program enhancements, which were also announced in June 2020, will continue.

These include: increased hours of operation (6 a.m.-6 p.m.); additional medical facilities that were beyond the seven-mile buffer around the county boundary; and adding employment as an approved trip type.

To apply to be a Hanover DASH rider, a short registration form is required along with documentation to confirm Hanover County residency and proof of age (60 or over) or disability (shortor long-term).

He will be attending the University of Virginia, where he will major in Biology on a Pre-Med track.

ASHLAND -- With the arrival of summer and the end of the school year, the Ashland Police Department wants to remind everyone of pedestrian safety tips while driving and walking around town.

With warmer temperatures, more residents and visitors will be walking around town on sidewalks and crosswalks, many of them children enjoying summer break.

Tips for drivers:

z Be alert, do not drive distracted. z Expect the unexpected.

As I stared at the latest batch of photos, I had a revitalization of the true joy and comfort that a smile on your child’s face can provide.

All residents are reminded that Virginia state code requires motorists to yield for

pedestrians that are in crosswalks by slowing down or stopping if necessary. State law also requires that pedestrians show due regard for approaching traffic before crossing the road.

Pedestrians can improve their safety by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective material or flashing lights at night. While light colored clothing can be helpful in making you visible at night, reflective tape or reflective fabric is much better.

During the next few weeks, the Ashland Police Department will be conducting speed and pedestrian safety patrols in areas heavily travelled by pedestrians.
