Dear Families, WE DID IT!!! Tomorrow morning, we will welcome our students for the final day of the 2020-21 school year. Before we do, I would like to take a moment to extend my deepest and sincerest appreciation to each

and every one of you who helped us to reach this point 00 the last day of a school year we will talk about for the rest of our lives.

Just prior to the first day of school, I shared the following message with you: “2020 has been a year like none other, and while I’m sure many will be glad to see it go, I am excited about the school year to come. During adversity, we often discover our greatest potential. Working side-by-side, we can do exactly that.

Let’s make it happen. Together.”

Together. It’s a powerful word and one that underscores what made this year successful. It took our entire school community, each person rising to the moment and

doing their part to make what may have seemed impossible possible.

Working together, we achieved more than anyone ever imagined, all for the sole purpose of serving the unique needs of our students and families. It is the people of our comGILL munity and the strong relationships that we have forged together over many years that have helped us through these challeng-

ing times and truly exhibited the strength of our school system and Hanover County.

Grateful. As I reflect back on this unprecedented school year, the word that comes to mind most is grateful.

I am grateful for our students, who showed just how resilient they are while continuing to become responsible and empowered citizens. I am grateful for our faculty and staff at all levels, who rose to the challenge with unwavering service and dedication through the most trying times we have experienced together. I am grateful for you, our families, who trusted us over the course of the entire school year to educate and care for your children. And, I am grateful

for our broader community for their longstanding and unwavering support of our school division.

Despite the many challenges, you supported us deeply as we made a unique plan that best served our students a reality. We didn’t know what to expect last fall, but we knew it was the right plan for our community. We knew we had to try for the sake of our students and their well-being.

Tomorrow morning, we will gather again for one last time this school year. We tried, and we succeeded.

Caps step up to refurbish skating rink Ashland resident graduates from U.S. Naval Academy

By Jim Ridolphi for Ashland-Hanover Local HANOVER -- For almost 20 years, a steady procession of Hanover County youths have honed their inline skating and roller hockey skills at the Barton Memorial Rink located off U.S. 301 near the Courthouse. That constant use has taken its toll, and recently the rink has been closed due to severe fissures in the surface, deeming the facility unsafe for use since April.

Parents Doug and Carol Barton, along with supporters and organizers of the rink, set up a Go Fund Me page to garner financial support for the needed upgrades, including a complete resurfacing. The Washington Capitals added some much needed support to that effort last month.

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved a grant from the pro hockey team earlier this month that will renovate, replenish and improve the current facility.

Director Derek Stamey of Hanover County Parks and Recreation announced the partnership at a supervisors’ meeting last month and work began almost immediately on the upgrades.

The rink was constructed and donated to the county in 2001 as a tribute to

The Washington Capitals hockey team has committed financial support for the Matthew & Daniel Barton Memorial Rink located near the Hanover Courthouse.

Matthew Barton, who died from a rare disease called Lymphoblastic Lymphoma at the age of 10. The Bartons lost their other son, Danny, at 19 due to complications of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.

“Tragically, the Bartons lost their son Matthew when he was 10 years old, a student at Pearson/s Corner Elementary School,” Stamey said. He was an avid hockey player.

Dr. Quentin Ballard, the principal at Bell Creek Middle School (BCMS), recently received the Leadership Award from the Virginia School Counselor Association, an annual award given to someone who supervises, supports, and/or educates current or future school counselors by their leadership and advocacy for the field of counseling.

Do you feel secure returning to life before COVID?

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ust as I started to write this last Tuesday, an alert came up on my Apple Watch from the Richmond Times-Dispatch about COVID-19 possibly having already arrived in the U.S. by Christmas 2019. No one has to twist my arm to convince me. I know some people who were so sick with what were extreme flu-like symptoms at that time, and the illness lasted about a month.

I’m one of those who usually waits to see if a flu bug is going to “run its course” in a few days before seeking medical treatment. And my mother and I get our flu vaccine every

September at a local drug store.

In catching up with friends during that holiday time period, I learned at least one had been sick with a dreadful flu in November 2019.

I’ve been around long enough to remember the swine flu, Avian flu, and a few others whose names evade me. The point is, none of them were particularly alarming. And then COVID arrived.

I don’t have a fear of needles, so any time a vaccine was being offered to prevent whatever disease at the time I accepted. As I said a few months ago, I was so relieved to receive both doses of the Moderna vaccine. If a booster is mandated, count me in.

As a Hanover County resident, I still can’t sing the praises enough for the Chickahominy Health District and the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. The vaccine clinics were run so smoothly by staff and volunteers.

Now we’re at the point of returning to normal. But, what is normal today? Have you ventured out to businesses that you had been dealing with through delivery? What about entertainment? Are you ready to see a movie in a theater or a concert at a large venue?

I did take Mom to a nice restaurant on Mother’s Day. We couldn’t remember the last time we had been inside one.

I had managed pretty well throughout

2020, but I have now reached that “I’ve got to get out of here” phase of experiencing a pandemic. I keep thinking “I need to see the ocean.” Hopefully, that will become a reality before too long.

How about you? Are you ready to return to the lives we were living pre-COVID? Do you have any concerns about coming into contact with someone who refused to get the vaccine?

I’m about half and half in terms of how often I wear a mask. It certainly depends on the number of people I may encounter.

My hope is that you feel secure in how the pandemic was handled, and that we can return to a sense of normalcy. Fingers crossed.

‘Fatal Vision’ remains a haunting story after almost 51 years

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When I arrived at Southwood College in the fall of 1970, one of my first meaningful decisions, in other words, was something that did not involve scheduling of classes or purchasing books, involved alcohol.

Although North Carolina allowed the purchase of beer and wine at age 18, the matter was left for localities to decide, and the institution I had

selected was situated in the middle of a dry as a bone county.

For those of us born south of the Mason-Dixon Line, Sampson County was culture shock for sure, but all of the seemingly strange customs and quirks seemed somewhat familiar to those of us raised in the South.

But, the numerous and large road signs announcing that you had entered Klan Country must have been disturbing to students who somehow found themselves in Salemburg lack-

The decision on which direction we would take to obtain alcohol involved two distinct choices, both of equal distance and quality of road.

The road to the northern county line was a curvy two-lane highway that tested the most sober of drivers and proved too ambitious for many students following a Wednesday night blowout at the Village Inn. Or, you could drive the same dis-

tance west to a confluence of humanity called Fayetteville, a venue that offered more than just watered down beer and cheap wine.

I can only compare my first trip to downtown Fayetteville during that period to a feeling I had when I first disembarked a plane in a foreign county. Everything was new and vibrant, a neon haze of crowded sidewalks of slimy balkers enticing soldiers to enter one of the many establishments near Hay Street.

Peaceniks, hippies, refugees from Vietnam, students and soldiers walked the same infested streets searching for the same excitement or some other validation.

My arrival in the Fayetteville area coincided with a well-publicized inquiry that involved the murder of a young mother and her two girls at Fort Bragg, one of the busiest military bases in the United States made even more frantic by a full-scale war raging in Southeast Asia.

The news of Captain Jeffrey MacDonald and the accusations surrounding him could have easily been lost in the shuffle, but, for college students with an ample amount of spare time, the case seemed intriguing; and many of our trips to the surreal atmosphere of a city like no other ended with a visit to the scene of the crime.

Castle Drive seemed like all of the residential streets in Fort Bragg, the only distinctive feature being yellow crime tape that surrounded the small officers’ quarters. see FATAL, pg. 7

There was little question in our minds as to who the killer might be, and apparently some military investigators also were convinced Jeffrey MacDonald had murdered his family. A tribunal of military judges saw it differently and MacDonald was exonerated, left the military, and moved to California to begin a new life.

MacDonald told investigators that hippies had entered his apartment, killed his family in a most gruesome manner while inflicting only superficial wounds on the young Army doctor.

He recalled a woman with a floppy hat, long blond hair and boots being one of the attackers.

Back in the dorm, we’d laugh about the woman in the floppy hat, since almost every female in Fayetteville wore one, and MacDonald’s description of the three men who accompanied her fit the majority of the male population.

Most of us were surprised when the Army found no evidence and dismissed the charges later that fall. For most of us, that ended the case and I’m sure none of us thought we’d still be talking about it five decades later, or that the crime tape surrounding the scene of the crime remained in place until the unit was demolished decades later.

Thanks in large part to the relentless efforts of the murdered wife’s stepfather, Alfred Kassab. MacDonald was eventually arrested for the murders, convicted and sentenced for the inexplicably cruel slayings.

In the more than four decades since the murders, MacDonald has exhausted his appeals and has made numerous unsuccessful attempts to reopen the case, still clinging to his story of a hippie attack and the woman in the floppy hat.

remain free, walking the streets of who knows what city.

Most of the members of my family also were convinced by the documentary, but it did little to alter my long-held beliefs regarding MacDonald’s guilt. I never doubted it for a minute and still don’t.

It was difficult for them to believe that a young, handsome doctor who had overachieved throughout his life could transform into a brutal monster capable of inflicting such unthinkable terror on his own family. Sadly, some of us have lived long enough to recognize a disturbing reality that unthinkable evil does exist.

MacDonald is now 77 and recently asked a judge to issue a compassionate release that would allow him to spend the last years of his life in freedom.

His refusal to admit his crime or show any remorse could affect the judge’s decision, but, at this point in the once young promising doctor’s life, perhaps the truth alone can provide his only true freedom. Case closed — again.

Foreman’s solo almost wins title for Atlee

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – If Atlee junior Jada Foreman could have run the 4x400-meter relay all by herself Friday, she might have won the Virginia High School League Class 5 state outdoor track and field championship . . . all by herself.

As it was, Midlothian’s girls needed to finish at least sixth in the 4x400, the final event of the day, to edge Foreman’s 43 points. The Trojans finished sixth, edging Foreman by a point to win the state team title in the 2021 championships held at Todd Stadium in Newport News.

Foreman scored in all six events she competed in, winning the girls triple jump, finishing second in the high jump, long jump and 200 dash, fourth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

She did all that in one day – in a compressed schedule that, at the longest, allowed her no more than an hour of rest and leaving her little time to appreciate her achievement.

“Everything happened really fast,” Foreman said Sunday. “So it really hasn’t sunk in, the fact that like that it all happened.”

Not many did at the time.

Because of processing issues, few knew how the team scoring stacked up. Foreman’s coach, Neil Mathews, and his staff resorted to the old-fashioned way of figuring it out – adding the results up by hand. The old-fashioned math had him prepared for the 4x400, the final

event of the day, and he knew what Midlothian’s girls needed to do to beat Foreman.

Mathews surprised Trojan head coach Stan Morgan when he walked up to congratulate the Trojans on their state title.

“They were, like, ‘Why is he coming around congratulating us? We had a good race, but it wasn’t like we won,’ ” Mathews said.

Soon the event announcer confirmed the news: Midlothian’s girls in first place with 44 points. Jada Foreman – er, Atlee – in second with 43. Foreman wasn’t the first to nearly pull off a state team championship all by herself, but it hasn’t happened often and hasn’t happened in such a timecompressed fashion.

“I would say it’s one of the historically best performances I’ve ever seen,” said Nolan Jez, senior editor of Virginia Milesplit.

He and a few “old-timers” including Mathews and former national coach of the year Eddie Williams of Bethel and Grafton’s Jim McGrath talked afterwards trying to figure out who had pulled off a similar feat as Foreman.

The list is short. One was another athlete coached by Mathews, Rachel Butler at what was then Lee-Davis High School in 2007. Grant Holloway, a world champion hurdler from Grassfield, is another. By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor LYNCHBURG – Hanover’s Alli Crytser headlined the local performances at the Virginia High School League Class 4 state outdoor track and field championships Saturday at Liberty University, finishing first and second, respectively, in the 3,200-meter and 1,600meter runs.

Crytser’s performance, along with a trio of all-state efforts by Khia Holloway and another pair by Rachael Turner, lifted the Hawk girls to a close fifth-place finish out of the nearly 40 teams competing.

Patrick Henry’s boys, with a trio of strong relay performances, including a pair of secondplace finishes in the 4x100 and 4x800, led local teams with a fourth-place finish.

The Hawk girls were within two points of third place.

Loudoun Valley won with 71 points, followed by Jefferson Forest (55), Fauquier (42), and King’s Fork (41). Hanover scored 40. Patrick Henry finished in 24th place with 5.5 points.

“It went very well for the most part,” said Hanover head coach Rich Firth. “It’s been a crazy year. We’ve done three seasons since January 1, with the seasons overlapping by weeks. So I think everybody is a bit mentally fried at this point, but the kids did really, really well.”

Holloway finished third, fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 100, 200 and 400. Turner finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the shot put and discus.

Ethan Coleman led the Hawk boys with a second-place finish in the 1,600 and a third in the 800.

Foreman wasn’t looking to make history. She had made a list of objectives she wanted to achieve. She wanted to beat herself in the events she had signed up for. Personal history was the only thing on her mind at the time – a less-than-ideal performance at states in her freshman year and no outdoor track to compete in during her sophomore year last year.

“I just I feel like I was really determined to, like, get what I needed to get done there,” Foreman said. “Freshman year, I didn’t have the best outdoor states. I really wanted to kind of like redeem myself from there see SOLO, pg. 13

Orange puts up a fight but Hawks take title

By Rob Witham for The Local MECHANICSVILLE – It wasn’t a doubleheader, but it sure felt like one.

After six innings dominated by strikeouts and small ball, the bats came alive for both the Orange Hornets and Hanover Hawks in the Region 4B softball championship Wednesday evening.

A seemingly solid 2-0 lead disappeared in the top of the seventh when the Hornets, aided by a Hanover error, scored two runs to tie the title game. But the Hawks answered in kind as Jenna Currie doubled, then Alyssa Broaddus singled to bring Currie home with the winning run to capture the region crown by a 3-2 score.

“At the beginning of the game, they weren’t going after her pitches,” Currie, the Hawks’ catcher said of the Hornets’ approach to sophomore pitcher Julia Cuozzo, who registered 10 strikeouts. The approach changed when the heart of the Hornets order came to bat in the top of the seventh in do or die mode.

“They tried to hop on other pitches, and it helped them out a little bit,” Currie said. “I told (Cuozzo) to take a deep breath.

She was throwing fine. Don’t overthrow. Throw like you can, and you’ll be fine.”

It was easily the biggest pressure situation this year for Cuozzo, who has been dominant in her first season of varsity high school softball. After Reese Rogers reached on the error to begin the Orange seventh, Haley Martin reached on a bunt down the first base line.

Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and, suddenly, the Hornets had the tying run in scoring position.

Hanover (14-0) scored its first run in the second inning thanks to a double by Hill, who later stole third, and a sacrifice fly caught down the right field line in foul territory from Currie. They added the second

run in the fifth on a double by Beanie Acors, who also stole third, then scored on a sacrifice bunt from Broaddus.

Broaddus reached third, but was picked off to end the inning.

She would get her chance at redemption in the seventh after Currie led off with her double.

“I look at my mentality and think, all I have to do is get a base hit. That’s all I need,” Broaddus said when asked about the clinching at-bat.

“I was just thinking, drive it back side, because I wanted to advance that runner.”

Broaddus’ wish came true as the second pitch from Hearl was in perfect position for her to punch the ball into right field, just past the diving glove of second baseman Kennon Burnett. Brianna Michaels, courtesy running for Currie, flew around third and scored standing up to spark a quirky combination of relief and celebration by the Hawks.

When Broaddus reached first base, she couldn’t contain herself. She quickly turned to see if Michaels had reached home.

“I had to (look). I was like, (assistant coach) John (Mardigian), I’m not going, I’m not going,” Broaddus said with a smile.

Hanover hasn’t been this close to a state championship since capturing their lone title in 2006. With a victory at Region 4A champion Grafton Tuesday (after this edition went to press), the Hawks would have the honor of hosting the Class 4 title game Saturday.

“I think we have a really special team and I think we could win states. For me, that’s just excitement,” Currie said, echoing the sentiment of the entire team.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Three years ago, Hanover’s girls soccer team won a playoff on a goal in the last few seconds of regulation.

This year, the Hawks learned what it felt like to lose a playoff – the Region 4B final – on a goal scored in the last few seconds of regulation.

Monacan’s Maci Hulver broke through the Hawk defense for a 1-on-1 and put a ball into the left side of the Hanover net in the final seconds of regulation to break a 1-all tie and end what had been a perfect Hawk season one game short of the Virginia High School League Class 4 state tournament.

“I’ve been on both ends of this game,” said Hanover head coach Manny Tavares. “We won this in 2018 with a couple of seconds to go. I guess it was my turn to feel what it’s like to lose with a couple seconds to go.”

Two early goals were from junior attacker Dell Vidunas, who has seen huge improvements in his team’s play since its only loss, on opening night to Deep Run.

“We made a bunch of changes, and I think everyone bought in,” Vidunas said. “We knew we had the pieces to be really good.

We’ve gotten hot, and we’re peaking at the right time.”

Midlothian (7-5) struggled early defensively and never recovered. Maxx Lawton had two goals for the Trojans, while Wesley Hazzard and Otto

Gavin Stone led the Mavericks with five goals, while Vidunas tallied four and his best friend, Matt McCabe, scored three times and added seven assists.

“She was going to have to be really on her game to compete with the level of competition that was there,” How does one go to a one day meet and how does one put it together to score in six different events? It obviously takes a lot of guts to even want to try it. She has to be extremely tough. She has to be physically tough and talented.

“But she also has to be very mentally tough because, you know, any one thing goes wrong or off or she feel the fatigue setting in she could very easily shut down. Like you’re in six events, why not take one off, you know. For her, I think it takes a lot of guts, a lot of cour-

In the girls game, the faceoff is called a draw control. It perfectly described the game plan and execution of the Mavericks, who won seven of the first nine draw controls of the match, drawing their offense into a quick chemistry, seemingly a step ahead of the defending champions.

To make her achievement Saturday all the more impressive, Foreman had to do the same thing the week before at the Region 5B championships at Glen Allen. Because of the pandemic, there was no automatic qualifying standards. One had to do well at his or her respective regional meet, and, because fewer entrants were allowed in states, one had to be in the top four finishers in an event to qualify.

And the regional meet was, like the state meet, a one-day affair.

But Foreman obviously han-

dled the pressure well. And she let life return to normal as soon as the meet was over.

“I did a little shopping out there then because we were kind of near a mall,” Foreman said. “Then on the ride home, I passed out in the car.”

Don’t worry. She wasn’t driving. She was finally getting some well-deserved rest.

“This time, in particular, we worked together so well. On the circle, Grace Moore, Bridget Wilson are incredible on the draw and so ambitious,” Nease explained. “They always seem to know where I’m going to put it. Everybody was engaged and ready to play today.”

Atlee (10-1) finally got its offense on track in the latter part of the first half, scoring three goals in 81 seconds, Ashley Karn and Olivia Ritter, who tallied twice, cutting the margin to 8-5. The teams traded goals the remainder of the half with the Mavericks up 12-7 at intermission.

The Raiders found their groove in the middle in the second half, winning seven of 12 draw controls, keeping the margin at five until the Mavericks scored two over a four-minute span for a 16-9 lead.

While the Raiders scored four of the last five goals of the match, it was too little, too late as the Mavericks began burning time off the clock after a

timeout with seven minutes left.

Kate Miller ends her illustrious career with five goals, while Karn added three.

It’s the first region crown for the Maverick girls, who next travel to face Patrick Henry (Roanoke) in a Class 5 state semifinal Tuesday. For Douglas Freeman head coach Christina D’Angelo, it’s back to work with some familiarity, as the Patriots feature players that Nease and others have faced on the club circuit. Her postgame perspective was simple.

“We used [the pandemic] to motivate us. We kept saying, this could be the last time, at any moment,” D’Angelo said. “We held on to the feeling we had when [last] season was taken away, reminding ourselves, this is precious.”

Nease stood savoring how precious the moment was, holding the trophy in one arm and D’Angelo’s young daughter in the other.

Ashland police chief offers summer pedestrian safety tips (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Chief Douglas A. Goodman of the Ashland Police Department.)

ASHLAND -- With summer upon us as well as the end of the school year, the Ashland Police Department wants to remind everyone of pedestrian safety tips while driving and walking around town.

With warmer temperatures, more residents and visitors will be walking around town on sidewalks and

crosswalks, many of them children enjoying summer break.

Tips for drivers

before backing out of your driveway and parking spots.

Tips for parents

Be alert, do not drive distracted.

Expect the unexpected. Children may cross the street in unexpected locations or suddenly run in front of you.

Double check your surroundings

Teach children to cross streets at crosswalks or intersections with pedestrian signals.

Stop, Look, and Listen before crossing the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing a street.

Remind children not to play in or along streets and parking lots.

All residents are reminded that Virginia state code requires motorists to yield for pedestrians that are in crosswalks by slowing down or stopping if necessary. State law also requires that pedestrians show due regard for approaching traffic before crossing the road.

Pedestrians can improve their safety

by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective material or flashing lights at night. While light colored clothing can be helpful in making you visible at night, reflective tape or reflective fabric is much better.

During the next few weeks, the Ashland Police Department will be conducting speed and pedestrian safety patrols in areas heavily travelled by pedestrians.

Vehicular heatstroke dangers increase as temps rise; ‘look before you lock’ RICHMOND – In 2020, 24 children in the United States died as a result of being left in an unattended hot vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

As temperatures begin to climb, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) urges parents and caregivers to never leave children unattended in a vehicle – even for

a minute – no matter the temperature. When the outside temperature is 80 degrees, a car can heat up to 100 degrees in just 10 minutes.

Parking in the shade and rolling down the car’s windows have little effect on inside temperature, and as time goes by the temperature rises. Children have died from heatstroke in cars when outside temperatures were as low as 60 degrees.

“As the weather is warming up in the Commonwealth and we are traveling more frequently, we need to establish habits that will help keep our children and pets safe when we get out of our vehicles,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative.

“All hot car deaths are preventable and we - as parents, caregivers, and bystanders -- have

a responsibility to keep those more vulnerable to heatstroke safe.”

Both children and pets are especially prone to being harmed by heatstroke. Children heat up three to five times faster than adults, according to kidsandcars.org. Pets cannot sweat like humans; they can only cool down through panting, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

High temperatures can cause irreparable organ damage in pets and even death.

A good rule of thumb is to always “look before you lock,” NHTSA says. Drivers are encouraged to check the back seats of their vehicle before locking it and walking away.

A helpful reminder may be to keep a stuffed animal or pet’s toy in the back seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front

seat as a visual reminder when a child or pet is in the back seat.

Additionally, caregivers should be mindful of the dangers of heat when traveling with the elderly. As people age, it becomes more difficult to regulate temperature and the ability to sweat decreases, making the elderly more at risk of heatstroke than younger adults, according to the National Institutes of Health.
